Future Olympian Fiona Benson.Four years ago, and even at the beginning of this

year, those words probably wouldn't have fit her — it was not even on her radar.

For the Trinity Western graduate who grew up in Tomslake and spent time running with Daw-son Creek Secondary School, it was something she thought was meant for dreams more than reality.

“It seemed like a bit of a dream world — the idea of going to the Olympics or being a professional ath-lete,” she said in a phone interview from Langley on Monday. “People can look at you and say you have a lot of talent, but to go from being a pretty average university runner to be honest, there were lots of girls in Canada who could run what I could run.

“I was a long ways off Olympic standard before this season, I guess I’m a little too practical for that to look and go ‘if I do this and this and everything goes right I could maybe run at the Olympics one day.’ I never really dreamed that far.”

That dream is now a reality for the 23-year-old. On Sunday in Portland, Oregon, Benson had the

race of her life in the women’s 800 metre. She fin-ished the event in a time of 1:59.94, which fell below the Canadian Olympic qualifying time of 2:01 in that distance.

“Oh my gosh, it took me a minute for that to even register,” she said of the race in Portland. “When I started running fast, I mean, a half a second off the 2:01 mark, which is the standard for Worlds and the Olympics, so that was just like a magic barrier for me. But to go under two is beyond exciting.”

To put that time in perspective, Benson is only the fifth Canadian woman ever to run below the two minute mark in the 800m, and her time currently ranks 12th in the world this season in the distance.

To top it off, Benson ran the time in Portland against the two other runners who have run sub-two minute 800m times in Canada, Melissa Bishop and Jessica Smith.

According to Benson’s coach Mark Bomba, who has been working with her for the last four years, it

wasn’t even close. “She strategically and tactically

ran a brilliant race. She covered all the moves of the girls she needed to beat and she put herself in a position with 200 to go where she completely controlled the race,” Bomba said from his home in Langley.

“So by that I mean to run the best possible race she could and it showed. The last 50 metres she pulled away from a world-class field and she pulled away quite easily. She put a move on with 50 metres to go, that two of the best Canadian 800 metre runners of all time and one of the top American runners just couldn’t respond to what she did.”

Benson will now be able to train for the next year without rac-ing, and if that 1:59.94 isn’t beat-

en, she will head to the Olympics in 2016.

In the more immediate future, what that time means for Benson is she has qualified for the Pan Am Games coming up in July in To-ronto and the IAAF World Cham-pionships in Beijing, China in Au-gust.

“Over the two weeks I’ve been trying to let in sink in, but not get my hopes up too much still be-cause it happened so suddenly. If it changed that quick, who knows what can happen next, “she said.

“Running under that Olympic standard was a huge moment for me and now it’s trying to sink in about what that’s going to mean for me for the next year. I still don’t have a very good grasp on that. It’s been kind of a whirlwind.”

Benson is currently ranked

the top Canadian in the women’s 800m, and topped personal bests in each of her last four races from May 30th, to this past weekend all against the best runners in Cana-da.

And how exactly does some-one go from a middle of the pack university track runner to a world-class athlete? Even Benson isn’t sure.

“The only thing I can think of is I didn’t feel hung up on the run-ning,” Benson said about how she went from running consistently 2:08 to the Olympic standard.

“I wasn’t worried about it. I graduated uni-versity, so this was kind of my last season to see if anything Cont. on Page 4

would probably move on and get a job. “So there wasn’t a lot of pressure there for what

would happen, it was just go out there and see what

Continued from Page 4Along with her four years of training in

track, Benson has built quite the pedigree in the cross-country world in her time at Trinity Western University and her one year at Grande Prairie Regional College that might have helped her succeed on the track.

She is a Canadian Collegiate Athletic As-sociation (CCAA) champion, has been to the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) championships in cross-country and most recently competed at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships in March.

“She’s that talented,” Bomba said about Benson’s ability to transfer between run-ning an 8 kilometre cross-country trail race to 800 metres on a track.

“First and foremost she has the genetic tools… it’s not as much as a shock as some people would find, especially considering the nature of the training she responds to quite well. Once again that takes years. And that’s where she is now.”

Where she is now is scary in a good way explained Bomba, who was has been

involved in Canadian track for the last 30 years. The scary part is both he doesn’t think he’s seen a talent like Benson, and that the 800m isn’t even her best track event. That would likely be the 1500m, a race she was focusing on until her first 800m 2:01 time in May, in Victoria.

“I made enough national teams to know Olympians of a variety of distances, but she’s a unique talent,” Bomba said.

“Her range is ridiculous. To qualify for a world cross-country and then comeback and run under 2 for an 800m is just an odd-ity. So no I haven’t. I trained with a woman who was fourth in the 96 Olympics, I’ve never seen anything like Fiona and I’ve been in the sport for 30 years and I’ve never seen anything like her, not on the Canadian scene anyway.”

For the former homeschooled runner whose mother would send her out for runs before school and simply for exercise, it’s a meteoric rise and what is just the begin-ning of what could be a remarkable track career.

Construction work is progressing well on the Dawson Creek/Chetwynd Area Transmission Project (DCAT).

Starting in June and throughout the summer, helicopter work will be taking place along the DCAT right-of-way. Helicopters are being used intermittently for conductor stringing between the Pine River area and Dawson Creek Substation.

Please note that helicopter work is weather dependent, so all dates are approximate.

BC Hydro and its contractors have obtained the necessary permits and permissions, and will be in compliance with Transport Canada requirements.

“[We] have yet to find out who we re-ally are.”

That was the message valedictorian Nina Zhang delivered to the Dawson Creek Secondary School Class of 2015.

“We are all artists, for life is but a can-vas that we paint on,” she said. “There are many colours to dip the brush in, a variety of pictures — masterpieces — still yet to be [formed]. Schooling is but a single colour on the palate. It is up to the individual artists to paint knowl-edge and education with its hues and shades.”

And with that message, the 168 grad-

uates strutted their way across the stage to collect their diplomas.

Some took selfies with Principal Paul Chisholm, others gave him a bear hug. All left with a piece of paper that car-ries with it the memories of the last four years.

School District 59 Board of Education Chair Richard Powell said the occasion marks the beginning of their journey.

“I believe this is a very special time, and a very special occasion in your lives,” he said. “I don’t consider it to be an ending of your education. It’s just another step in the progress of life-long learning. Use what you have learned to build up what you will need to learn to meet the challenges in your life.”

The Encana Events Centre was filled with friends and family. On the floor in front of the stage, several jittery legs were hidden by red, black and white gowns. Some young men nervously poked at the girls sitting next to them.

Class historians Bree Middleton and Taylor Sutherland reflected on the first day the grad class met at Central Mid-dle School.

“We like to think of Central as the roots of our grad class relationship,” the two said in a joint speech.

“It’s almost like we were getting mar-

July is a special month in North America. Those in the United States eagerly await the arrival of the Fourth of July so they can once again commemorate America’s independence. Canadians celebrate their independence a few days earlier on July 1st, which marks the day when Canada offi cially became a self-governing dominion of Great Britain.

Canada Day, once known as Dominion Day, marks the anniversary of July 1, 1867. On this day, Canada was offi cially born when the British North America Act, 1867 (today called the Constitution Act, 1867) joined the three colonies of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and the province of Canada into one country. The province of Canada later split into Ontario and Quebec.

Canada became a kingdom in its own right on July 1, with the British parliament and Cabinet only keeping limited rights of political control over the new Canadian country. By 1982, however, the last vestiges of British control were surrendered. It was also in this year that, after decades of deliberation, Dominion Day was renamed to Canada Day.

Canada Day is a day for all Canadians to express their patriotism. Parades

and parties are held, and the Canadian fl ag is proudly displayed on homes and businesses. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police have a special group of 32 offi cers called the RCMP Musical Ridey, who may perform at Canada Day celebrations. Picnics, festivals and sporting events also are part of the festivities. Fireworks displays dot the night sky, and many residents can be heard singing the Canadian national anthem, “O Canada,” which is based on a poem written by Robert Stanley Weir in 1908.

Should Canada Day fall on a Sunday, July 2nd serves as the statutory holiday. However, most celebrations still take place on the fi rst in such years. In 2011, The Duke and Dutchess of Cambridge celebrated Canada Day in Ottawa. Other special guests may join in the festivities as well.

People all across Canada are gearing up for barbecues, parades and other celebrations in honor of Canada Day, which is often a fun holiday during the summer season.

June 12, 2015

An allergy is an exaggerated reaction by the immune system to a usually harmless substance. Substances that trigger allergies are called allergens.

When allergens enter the body of a person predisposed to allergies, the body “remembers” the reaction and the next time the person is exposed to the allergen, the immune system defends itself by releasing various substances including histamine. This in turn triggers a wide range of symptoms.

Allergies vary in intensity and can take many forms including atopic dermatitis (eczema), asthma and, most commonly, allergic rhinitis.

CausesGenetics seem to play a role in a person’s

predisposition to developing allergies. In fact, if one or both parents suff er from allergies, their children are more likely to develop allergies. The allergy however, will not necessarily manifest itself the same way.

There are two types of allergic rhinitis:• Seasonal (acute): occurs only at particular

times of the year- hay fever for example. Seasonal allergies are a reaction to wind-borne allergens such as ragweed, tree and grass pollen. See the table at the end of the document for a monthly breakdown of the various types of pollen.

• Perennial (chronic): occurs year-round regardless of the season. Perennial allergies are a reaction to indoor allergens that are always present in the air such as dust mites, pet dander (feathers, hair, skin fl akes) and mould caused by humidity or water infi ltration problems.

SymptomsAllergy symptoms can cause many diff erent

symptoms and vary in intensity. Individuals with allergies may suff er from one or several of the following symptoms:

• runny nose with clear discharge• sneezing • itchy nose• nasal or sinus congestion• headache • postnasal drip • scratchy throat• red , infl amed skin and mucous

membranes (ex. tissue that lines the inside of the mouth)

• red eyes • itchy eyes • watery eyes• diffi culty breathing, wheezing • cough• asthma (in more severe cases)• hives (itchy rash)• anaphylactic shock (severe reaction that

can be fatal within a few minutes)DiagnosisWhen diagnosing an allergy, it is important

to be able to provide the physician with some basic information regarding symptoms. Information such as time of day or season, intensity, symptoms and substances believed to be responsible for the allergy will help the physician make the diagnosis. The physician can also order painless skin tests to determine which allergens are causing the allergies

TreatmentThere is a vast array of treatments available.

They can be taken alone or in combination and often target specifi c symptoms. Some, such as eye drops, have a local eff ect while others, such as oral antihistamines, are systemic in that they work throughout the entire body. Generally speaking, starting treatment before exposure to the allergen is more eff ective than starting when symptoms are already present.

Many allergy remedies are sold over the counter. It is recommended however, that you speak to your pharmacist in order to choose the product that best suits your needs.

Another option is allergy desensitization. This treatment, performed by a physician, involves injecting the allergy-suff erer with small quantities of the substances that trigger their allergies. This enables the body to build resistance, reducing the intensity of symptoms. the next time they are exposed to the allergens.

Continued from Page 7For valedictorian Zhang, the most

memorable parts of the last four years did not come from the class-room — although the foundation for success was bred while sitting in those plastic chairs and neatly lined rows of desks.

Zhang said the most formative things she learned in her high school years were not written on white-boards.

“Though its meaning may be ob-scured by technical definitions, the essence which defines education is simply an expression of discovery and knowledge. A percentage or a grade does not represent anything. However, the will to try and attempt does. The will to initiate does.” [email protected]

“We are all artists, for life is but a canvas that we paint on. There are many colours to dip the brush in, a variety of pictures — masterpieces — still yet to be [formed]. Schooling is but a single colour on the palate. It is up to the individual artists to paint knowledge and education with its hues and shades.”
