December Hospitality – 12/5 at 7:00 p.m. in the Orchard Room Come and Enjoy an “Old Fashioned Christmas”
Chair: Cherry Vujevich Inspirational Reader: Joan Meyers Hostess: Rose Zubik Committee: Kara Mintle, Carol Margaret Miller, Janeen Schmaedeke, Tracey Shumard, Marilyn Herndobbler; and Mary Lee Lockwood
Our magical month of December is here again. We
look forward to the wonderfully decorated houses with
their myriad of lights, the smells of pine, cinnamon, baked
cookies and seeing all our families and friends. My birds also seem to
know that something is in the air. Cardinals, woodpeckers, chickadees,
wrens, blue jays, etc. are flitting all over the yard - eating and preparing
for winter. There is nothing like snow on the ground and a flock of
cardinals hovering around the feeders.
I would like to thank Marilyn Herrndobler for our great program in
November, featuring the veteran volunteers from Abraham Lincoln
National Cemetery. They presented colors, did a beautiful flag folding
ceremony with a speaker telling us why they fold it 13 times and what
each fold meant, played taps and retired the colors. Many of us had a
tear in our eye during the ceremony. Afterward, in speaking to us, they
stressed the need for volunteers to help at the cemetery during the burial
of our soldiers.
We do not have a formal meeting in January but we do have a Unity
Brunch with Palos Park Woman's Club on Saturday, January 27
featuring omelets made to order all the way to ice cream sundaes.
Entertainment will be by Carol Taylor, an author and Palos Park resident
speaking about her book "The Long Way Home." Cost is $27.00 and
Jeanne Krapauskas will be selling tickets at the December meeting.
I look forward to seeing all of you at our annual Christmas
Housewalk on Saturday, December 9. Please see additional house walk
information on page 4.
I wish you all the blessings of the coming holiday season. You are all
very special to me.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

International Outreach Barbara Allen
"Make a Difference Day" was, once again, a huge
success thanks to our Club and the Palos Heights
Library who also collected food. What a pleasant
surprise when our member, Jeannine Kacmar, who is
also on the library staff, came with a trunk load of food
to the event. We collected 40 parcels of food. Thanks
to all who contributed.
Mary Beth Zwolfer delivered 25 filled Christmas
stockings to be sent overseas to our troops. This, along
with our shoe donations and
"Free the Girls" drive, has been a
testament to the thoughtfulness, caring
and generosity of our Club. If you can,
please drop off an item or two at the
pantry at the Methodist Church at
121st & Harlem. Some of the items
they hardly get are canned meats
and condiments i.e. ketchup & mustard. Personal items
are also needed. The pantry is open every Tuesday
from 9-11 a.m. and again from 4-6 p.m.
Merry and Blessed Christmas and a
Happy, Healthy and Safe New Year!
Program Marilyn Herrndobler
We will celebrate a very Merry
Christmas on Tuesday,
December 5! They say that
Christmas is for children but we
are all young at heart! Be
prepared to have a happy and
carefree evening as we sing
songs, laugh and feel the joy of
childhood watching some
remarkable puppets. We hope it
will start off your Christmas season with smiles and a
feeling of nostalgia, as in the days of your childhood!
Art Department Patricia Hogan
26 members and friends had a very enjoyable
afternoon attending the
Southwest Symphony
“The First Ladies of
Song”. We look forward
to more concerts in 2018.
Public Issues Carol Meneou
Our November meeting was one of the best ever with
the memorial squad performing the military burials that
they volunteer their time and service at the Abraham
Lincoln Cemetery in Elwood. Our military memorabilia
table was filled with great artifacts.
The “Wreaths Across America” ceremony will be held
on Dec. 16 at 11:00 p.m. at the Abraham
Lincoln Cemetery. There will be a bus
from Lockport available. If you are
interested in going, please let me know
as soon as possible. A total of $180 was
collected which will supply eight wreaths.
We will be delivering 33 lap blankets,
80 pairs of sox and 65 Christmas cards to the veterans at
Manteno. Again, thank you to all the members who have
supported these projects.
Home Life Denise Hyker
“Tis’ the Season to be Jolly” and a time we think of
others, especially those less fortunate. The Palos Heights
Recreation Center will have a toy drop off box starting
Dec. 1 through Dec. 9. If you’d like to donate a toy
please bring it to our December meeting and Home Life
will be happy to deliver them. The toys collected will be
donated to the Ronald McDonald house right in time for
Christmas!
The Home Life Committee
recently sponsored a donation
drive to provide immediate needs
items to the Crisis Center. Once
again, our members were generous
donating Pampers, assorted
toiletries, lotions, hair products,
cell phones as well as a plush throw.
The value of the donation was
approximately $215! The items
were delivered by member Marie
Kaminski to the Crisis Center who
are very grateful for the continued generosity of the
PHWC members.
The Immediate Needs Campaign addresses the 24/7
needs of the families on their journey to freedom from
abuse and violence. Thank you for supporting the Crisis
Center of South Suburbia for Victims of Domestic
Violence.

Conservation Lois McCann
With the holidays and busy season fast approaching,
please remember to continue recycling. When going
shopping, bring your own bags to carry your goods
home. That is a new one for me, but I am going to try it.
It will be one less plastic bag in the landfill. Small acts
when multiplied by millions of people, can transform the
world.
Please save all your natural
corks from those holiday
parties. We will continue
to collect eyeglasses, ink
cartridges and magazines
for the magazine trade. Please bring any of these items to
the next meeting. Wishing everyone a very joyful season.
Treasurer Joanne Ferneau
Trying to limit phone calls & mail you receive from
telemarketers? Consider being added to the National Do
Not Call Registry (call 1-888-382-1222 or visit
www. donotcall.gov). Also, review the privacy
disclosures that banks and other financial companies you
do business with send at least once a year. They explain if
and how you can limit certain sharing of your
information. For more guidance on stopping unwanted
mail and phone calls, see information from the Federal
Trade Commission at:

Yearbook Corrections Mary Lee Lockwood Please note that yearbook corrections are listed in the
newsletter as they become available. Please copy
corrections to emails, phone numbers and addresses
into your yearbook, so it is up-to-date. There were
corrections/additions in the September, October and
November newsletters. All past newsletters are on our
website. Please update your yearbook to include the
following new member:
Patricia Marusarz,

708/586-2277; 708/606-3686
Membership Mary Lee Lockwood Please keep up with attending meetings and getting
involved in our many PHWC activities. Sixty-four
members attended the November meeting. With another
new member, Patricia Marusarz, we are
now at 136, only one less that last year.
Attendance at each meeting has
been higher this year than last. Your
participation as a member is what
makes PHWC special and contributes
to our successes as a club!
With the House Walk approaching,
get to know a new member of the club
by asking them to participate in
some way. New members, please consider being a guide
at one of our homes, getting local certificate donations,
bake cookies or help put the cookie boxes together, and
attend the House Walk. This is our major fundraiser for
our charitable donations.
We are excited to have our new members and look
forward to your involvement in our club.

Tickets – Rose Zubik It would be greatly appreciated if you could purchase
your house walk tickets prior to
the December meeting. However,
if that is not possible, tickets will
be available at the December
meeting. You can also purchase
tickets at Mona Lisa, (361-1551) 12330 South Harlem,
Palos Heights or by contacting me directly.
Vendors – Sherry TerMaat
Our Christmas Boutique is sold out!
We will have some of our favorites
repeat vendors and have registered
many new vendors. There is
something for everyone for your
holiday shopping or maybe a
little something for yourself.
From clothing, jewelry, Christmas
delights and too many more to
mention. Remember to bring your
Christmas gift giving list with you!
Guides – Mary Lee Lockwood
We are still looking for guides. This is a great way for newer members to get to
know other club members.
You will be able to participate in
the breakfast, shop the boutique
and go on the home tour as well as
guide. Time slots are from noon to
1:30 p.m. and 1:30 to 3:00 p.m.
After-Glow Celebration – Kefi Greek Cuisine Patt Bailey has secured Kefi, 12200 Harlem Avenue,
Palos Heights, for our after-glow celebration. There will
be $5 martinis and appetizer specials for housewalk
attendees from 2 – 6 p.m.
Cookie Baking Party Suggestion Here is an idea…. If you do not like baking alone, why
not host a Cookie Baking Party!
Invite five or six fellow PHWC
members, ask each to bring the
ingredients for their special
cookies, open a bottle of wine
and let the baking and socializing
begin.
Raffles – Gift Cards
A great big thank you to the members who have been
earnestly soliciting gift certificates for the win/win and raffle
baskets. If you have gift certificates that you have not yet
turned in or new items you
wish to donate as bonus prizes,
please contact Rose Zubik
(708-945-6254) or Mary Beth
Zwolfer (708-299-2157). It
would be greatly appreciated
if you could turn in your gift certificates on or before Saturday,
Dec. 2. However, we will graciously accept any gift certificate
donations at the December meeting as well. Thank you.
Cookie Sale – Bev Bronowski
At the time of our December meeting, the Housewalk will be
just a few days away. This year, I am pleading with members
to help with the cookie sale. Long-time members have always
been so generous with their time and gifts. We need your
continued support, and we need our newer members to
participate, too. We ask that you bake 4 dozen of your very
best holiday cookies and bring them to the Rec Center on
Friday morning, December 8 between 8:00 a.m. and 10:00
a.m. The earlier you bring in your cookies, the better
assortment we can create. Please bring them in a disposable
container since we cannot be responsible for returning your
good plates or pans.
We will pack them in 1 lb. and ½ lb. containers. These assortments make wonderful little gifts, and they are
great to have around the house too.
Cookies can be baked in advance, frozen or dropped off to me, and I will freeze them. Just have them packaged
for freezing. You can also give them to another
member who will be coming to the Rec. Center that
Friday morning.
If you have questions, would like to volunteer, or think you might need to drop your cookies off on an earlier
date, please call me to make arrangements.
Just a few reminders:
Try to choose something other than chocolate chip. They are tasty, but too many make for a boring
assortment.
Very delicate or very large cookies break when being packaged. Consider compact, colorful cookies.
If you are not a baker, consider making a contribution to help with the purchase of the containers.
This way please

The Club is now close to 30 years of existence and continues to grow and expand in its efforts to enhance the lives
of the residences of Palos Heights and its surrounding community. In 1959, Palos Heights was incorporated as a city
and the Woman’s Club again held meetings at the Methodist Church. Still a fabulous and well-attended fundraiser,
the first Christmas Housewalk was held in 1961. There were four homes on the tour and then President Mary Ann
Meyers’ home was one. Tea and cookies were served and Christmas decorations, made by Club members were sold.
Weekly workshops were held for months each year and members gathered to made ornaments and decorations. The
handcrafted items were ultimately replaced with the Noel Boutique and refreshments (held at one of the area
churches) which became the 5th
stop on the tour.
The Woman’s Club was also the pioneer of area bridge tournaments. Many members wished to learn the game, so
Marj Hultquist began bridge lessons, first for the members and later for couples. The Bridge group still meets at the
Palos Heights Recreation Center today.
In April of 1964, the women held a 25th
Anniversary Luncheon and in 1965 organized and managed Vision Testing
for Pre-School children. Concern for the physically and mentally disabled and the advancement of health care began
with the Club’s contribution of volunteer hours and donations to the Occupational Therapy Department at Oak Forest
Hospital. Weekly visits were made to Manteno Hospital and for 36 years, socials were held annually for the patients
at Oak Forest Hospital. Members continued collecting for the Salvation Army and were area sponsors of the March of
Dimes “Mothers March,” providing workers for the annual mobile TB x-ray unit from 1958 to 1967.
Probably one of the best “get-acquainted” events
over the years was the “Come as you are Breakfast.”
Each September board members, with new yearbooks in
hand, would surprise members on their call list to take
them to a member’s home for breakfast. As more
members joined the work force, the time was switched to
evening and dessert was served.
We are grateful to the following long-standing
members who continue to actively attend meetings and
support the Clubs efforts and to whom we look to for
guidance and wisdom:

Legislative Action Corner Domestic Violence: The Brady Campaign and Center released a new report which highlights the tragic implications of what happens when domestic abusers have access to firearms. The report outlines troubling loopholes in the current background check system that allows stalkers and certain individuals convicted of domestic violence misdemeanors to purchase and use guns to threaten, injure, and kill victims of domestic violence. GFWC supports legislation to fix these loopholes, S. 1539 and H.R. 3207. Elder Abuse: On October 18, the President signed into law S. 178, the Elder Abuse Prevention and Prosecution Act, which establishes certain requirements for the Department of Justice with respect to investigating and prosecuting elder abuse crimes, and amends federal criminal law to expand telemarketing fraud to include “email marketing” fraud.
