Pictured are Joe, Jason, Jeff & Justin Edge.

Perfect weather and an immaculate golf course provided the perfect start to a perfect day at the Platteville Country Club on July 1st. 88 golfers descended upon the city to try to win the coveted Star Spangled Scramble title. Although only four players were able to rise to the top, all players were exposed to a day of laughs, comradery, and friendly competition. Once again, there was great support from Miner Alumni, Zephyr Alumni, and many friends of the Scramble. This year’s winners came in at -18 under par (with handicap) and withstood 5 other teams within 2 shots of the winning score. Congratulations to the team of Joe Edge (88), Justin Edge (91), Jason Edge (90), and Norm Schultz! It’s only taken them 15 years but they finally put it all together! The defending team of Tim Burns

(78), Taylor Burns, Tony Schunk (74), and Jim Schunk (79) were unable to match their performance from last year but have committed to making another run in 2017. Not to be outdone by his brothers, Jeff Edge (85) captured the popular “Closest to the Pin” award and $200 cash! David Lacke (83) also cashed in on some big time golf shop merchandise and left the gallery in awe with his jaw-dropping putting performance! He also just missed a putt that would have put $2500 in his pocket and free drinks for the county. Many others also left with valuable or semi-valuable prizes for their efforts. Special thanks to The Burg for creating an atmosphere on Hole #12 that many are still talking about. A big thank you also goes out to The Leadmine Tavern, Doolittles, The Benton State Bank, Honkers, General Beer Distributors, and the Platteville Country Club for their support. Due to the great support of this golfing community we were able raise $1400 that will be put towards the Badger Park basketball court rebuild mentioned above. Next year’s event will be held on July 8, 2017. Come and join the fun! Contact Lance Wand (86) or Mike Pfeil (87) if you have an interest in playing.

In our Neighborhood

Driving Safety with our Amish Neighbors

Do you recognize this sign? Chances are that you’ll see it when you travel the county and township roads near Shullsburg

and in Lafayette County generally.

Remember these safety tips when traveling our beautiful country roads:

• Rural roads are not for short cuts and drivers in a hurry. If you’re in a hurry, stay on the state highway!

• Know closure time. This is the time between first seeing a buggy ahead of you and catching up with it.

• Even the fastest horse is slow, only 5-8 mph. • Horses are unpredictable and can spook.

Avoid using the horn and give horses a wide berth when passing them.

• Watch for caution signs and react immediately.

Page 4: The Miner Tremorshullsburgalumni.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/45th... · The Miner Tremor 45th Edition Shullsburg High School Alumni News Fall 2016 23rd Annual Banquet September

• Never pass a buggy near the top of a hill. • Watch for buggies traveling at night with

only an SMV sign and a single light to the rear. If you see any light ahead SLOW DOWN.

Finally, expect to see more Amish buggies on the roads on Sundays as they travel to gather for worship. Let’s be safe out there as we share the countryside with our neighbors!
