Year 3 and 4 Summer Term
The Mighty Vikings!
Independence
This term we will be supporting the Year 3s in particular as they learn the new routines and systems of
KS2, while our Year 4s will be continuing to improve their
independence through roles, responsibilities and greater self
reliance.
Self-Belief
This term we will be promoting self belief by celebrating success both in class and as a school. Specific
rewards include Star Writer, Star of the Day and Golden Book child.
Curiosity
Using a ‘creative curriculum’ approach, we will be finding
out about robots this term, and encouraging the children to ask
and answer questions about the benefits and drawbacks of relying on machines to do our
work for us. We will also be exploring ‘family trees’ in RE; both our own family and the
family of Jesus.
Perseverance
Through carefully planned tasks and challenges, we will be
providing opportunities for the children to build resilience and
perseverance, as well as looking for opportunities to celebrate success when children find things difficult
but still keep trying.
Aspiration
As ever, we will be encouraging our children to do their very best
in all that they do, keeping expectations high and sharing
stories of people who have reached for the stars and achieved
their goals, for example, Elvis Presley - our musician of the term.
Communication
Over the next half term we will continue to develop our
communication skills through initiatives such as R-Time,
talking partners, envoy-ing, group work and show and tell.
We will centre our work around the narratives ‘How to Train your Dragon’ and ‘Viking Myths’ by looking at the language and features that the author has used in order to create our descriptive writing and making up our own myths. We will also be creating a non chronological report on Viking Longships.
We will continue to develop our English skills in separate sessions focussing mainly on using a range of fronted adverbials, correct punctuation and grammar and developing the use of vocabulary.
During our reading for meaning sessions, we will continue to think deeply about a range of different text types including; ‘You wouldn’t want to be a Viking Explorer,’ ‘Leon and the Place Between,’ ‘The Man who Walked Between the Two Towers,’ ‘The Eiffel Tower’ and a essay about E-Saftey.
Literacy
The children will be able to ask
questions about what they and others
wonder about how choices are made
and realise that some of these
questions are difficult to answer. They
will be able to compare these to other
people’s ideas to see how they differ.
They will be able to make links to show
how feelings and beliefs affect their
and others’ decisions about choices
and their consequences.
We will look at the story of the ‘Two Sons
and the Prodigal Son,’ use religious words
and phrases to describe saying sorry and
ask forgiveness and the Sacrament of
Reconciliation and a simple examination
of conscience and to write/say a sorry
prayer.
Children will be able to describe some
ways in which followers of Jesus live,
make links between religious stories and
the belief in a loving and forgiving God.
Children will be able to use a developing
religious vocabulary to give reasons for
what happens in the Sacrament of
Reconciliation and will be able to give
reasons why particular Christians make
good choices and follow Jesus.
Children will be able to ask and
respond to questions about their
own and others’ experiences of
Good News bringing life and
wonder about how good news
brings life and happiness. They
will be able to make links to
show how feelings of sadness
and joy, and the belief in the
goodness of others, affects their
own and others’ behaviour.
They will be able to show how
their own and others’ decisions
about receiving and giving good
news are informed by beliefs and
values.
Sound: The children will explore and identify the way sound is made through vibration in a range of different musical instruments focussing on how the Vikings communicated using different instruments. They will discover how the pitch and volume of sounds can be changed in a variety of ways and work scientifically by finding patterns in the sounds that are made by different objects such as saucepan lids of different sizes or elastic bands of different thicknesses. They will also investigate which material provides the best insulation against sound.
Children will collect information about the Vikings using internet searches and apps. They will select the most reliable information and use PowerPoint Presentations and Pic Collage to present their information.
The children will learn and re-call the Viking and Anglo-Saxon struggle for the Kingdom of England to the time of Edward the Confessor. This will include learning about Viking raids and invasions. The children will focus on map skills to learn where in Britain the Vikings settled.
Each class will carry out R- Time sessions developing their communication and social skills.
This term, with Mr Karia,
the children will be learning
the rules and playing
Badminton. They will also
improve their flexibility and
core strength in
Gymnastics & Dance.
This term we will look in detail at
a Viking long ship and sketch a
Viking long ship’s prow. As well
as this, we will look at a range of
Viking Patterns and create our
own.
The children will learn a range of
musical pieces in order to learn
to control pitch, volume and
tempo. This will compliment their
science work on how sound
travels and how to create
different tones and pitch. They
will also focus on a famous
musical artist in class and listen
and appraise their music. As well
as this, weekly hymn practise
sessions will take place every
Wednesday afternoon.
The children will learn how to
tell the time in French.
Social
We carry out peer assessment in all subjects. We create opportunities for each child’s voice
and use fair, democratic systems within our classes.
Moral
We have a weekly Bible story reading as a key stage and talk about lessons to be learned from the life of Jesus and other people in the Bible.
Two members of each class are part of the school council.
Spiritual
Our R.E curriculum allows children to explore their own and other beliefs and values and develop an awe and wonder.
Cultural
We will be looking at and how their culture differs from ours. We will also be listening to and
appraising music by Elvis Presley.
