He was invited to make a wish, and he wished that everything he touched be turned to gold. At first the king had a whale of a time turning pots, vases, and simple household utensils into valuable objects. It didn't take him long however to work out that his love of gold was about to destroy everything most precious to him, as he turned food, butterflies and finally his beloved daughter into solid lumps of metal. In many ways we are just as foolish as Midas. How many people do you know who won't go anywhere unless it's safe to park their brand new car? How many of us watch the aid agency adverts and sympathise, yet decide we can't part with any cash right now? How many of us cannot get up and get involved in worthy causes because our work commitments come first? We are just the same as Midas. Our material concerns stand in the way of what is really important. The man in today's gospel story was not a bad man; he had kept all God's commandments. This makes the story all the sadder, that he couldn't follow Jesus because of the one thing that stood in his way, his wealth. The man turned away, because he had much wealth and couldn't let go. Today's gospel invites the question, 'Do we own our possessions, or do our possessions own us?' 2017 Statement of Accounts are now available at church doors and we invite parishioners to take one to help you better understand the financial workings of the parish. DO YOU PAY TAX? The parish received almost €8,000 from tax relief in 2017. This is money we receive from the Revenue Commissioners based on donations made by people who pay PAYE or Income Tax (self-employed & pensions). This is one area we could easily increase the income for the parish. If you pay tax on your income and contribute to any of our collections please complete a CHY 4 form and return it to the Parish Office. We can then claim a refund from Revenue for a charitable donation. (This will not affect your tax in any way). Priests Collection:- the autumn collection for the support of the priests of the parish can still be left into the Parish Centre. This collection is one of four collections each year that goes to support the priests. Special envelopes are available in the collection boxes or there are envelopes available at the church doors. Your support, financial or otherwise is greatly appreciated. Mission Sunday 20th/21st October- on this weekend Catholics around the world are invited to be specifically conscious of the Church’s missionary activity abroad through prayer, sacrifice and financial contributions. The funds collected are used to assist Churches who need financial support and directed towards communities in need, both spiritually and materially. Donations can be made in envelope in your collection box or in any envelope. Next weekend our Parish will also launch its new initiative to twin with the parish of Our Lady Of Fatima in The Philippines. The parish is located 55 kilometers from Pagadian City. It has a population of 8,689. Farming is the primary occupation with corn, coconut and vegetables as the main produce. Like our parish they too are blessed to have a Poor Clare Monastery and we look forward to working closely with Fr Gilbert and his parish team to support them in building up their parish. Please see further info in our sacred space. Parish Data Privacy Notice: In compliance with Data Protection Regulations our parish data privacy notice is now available on our church notice board.

The Midas Touch Remember the story of King Midas? He was invited to make

a wish, and he wished that everything he touched be turned

to gold. At first the king had a whale of a time turning pots,

vases, and simple household utensils into valuable objects.

It didn't take him long however to work out that his love of gold was about to destroy everything most precious to him, as he turned food, butterflies and

finally his beloved daughter into solid lumps of metal.

In many ways we are just as foolish as Midas. How many people do you know

who won't go anywhere unless it's safe to park their brand new car? How many

of us watch the aid agency adverts and sympathise, yet decide we can't part

with any cash right now? How many of us cannot get up and get involved in

worthy causes because our work commitments come first? We are just the same

as Midas. Our material concerns stand in the way of what is really important.

The man in today's gospel story was not a bad man; he had kept all God's

commandments. This makes the story all the sadder, that he couldn't follow Jesus because of the one thing that stood in his way, his wealth. The man turned

away, because he had much wealth and couldn't let go.

possessions own us?'
