Fear Not…

When I am afraid, I will trust in you. In God, whose word I praise, In God I trust; I will not be afraid. What can mortal man do to me?

Psalm 56:3-4

What is the most often spoken commandment in the Bible? Do not kill? Do not commit adultery? Love your enemies? Love your neighbor as you love yourself? Follow me? Those are all very important commandments, and several are from Jesus himself. Indeed, he tells us dozens of times to “Follow Me” making that the second most widely used phrase in the Bible. But the most often used commandment in the Bible is “Do not be afraid!”

“Do not be afraid!” appears directly 70 times in the NIV. And there are many times when its variants like “Fear not!” or “Do not fear!” appear. Some count 365 times one of these variants appear; one for every day of the year. One writer

even identified a 366th one covering us for Leap Year too! Admittedly, some of these are perfectly capturing the sentiment of the first phrase, but the overriding issue is clear: God does not want us to live our life in fear.

With that said, we need to remember the Bible is not saying there is nothing in this life to fear. This is not some happy-go-lucky approach to life that everything all the time is just ok. The Bible is far more honest about life than that. And we deep down know there are things worthy of fear. It’s probably healthy to fear venomous snakes, and, as someone who lived in a swamp in eastern NC, my fear of alligators seems perfectly reasonable!

Also, the Bible is not saying we should not act prudently on our fears. Having an alarm system on our house or having a medical alert system again is just reasonable.

But the most important thing to remember about “Do not be afraid” is how often it is followed by a promise that God will be with us. Here are a few:

“Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today.” (Exodus 14:13)

“Do not be afraid of them; the Lord your God himself will fight for you.” (Deuteronomy 3:22) “Do not be afraid of them; I have given them into your hand. Not one of them will be able to

withstand you.” (Joshua 10:8) “Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom.” (Luke 12:32)

God says this to encourage us. God understands our fears often paralyze us, and we need the courage to move through the fear. But that courage often escapes us. We need help, and the Holy Spirit, the breath of God, can be there to put that courage in us.

Over the next few weeks, we will be looking at our fears in worship; fears in ourselves and in our world. We live in a world where fears drive so much of how we are and what we do. In the midst of this strife, our God simply comes to us and says, “Do not be afraid.” And when Jesus says that to us, we can have courage because of the presence of the Encourager! Let us find courage in an anxious world!

Grace and peace, Kendell Cameron

Our New Sunday School Year!

The new Sunday School year begins September 2nd. We thank all of our teachers for their dedication and

willingness to teach. Without them, we would not have a Sunday School program. Children and Youth can move

up to their new classes based on their school grade beginning September 2nd.

We look forward to a new and exciting year ahead.

Homebound Ministry

Please remember in prayer our homebound members. List of addresses are available in the church office if you feel led to connect with them.

Thank You… Dear First Baptist Church,

I would like to sincerely thank you for awarding me the Bob and Virginia Winecoff Scholarship. I was completely taken off guard by your thoughtful and kind gift. I am so grateful to have a home with you all at First Baptist. Your support means the world to me. Again, I can’t thank you enough.

Much Love, Sophie Matz

Dear Church Friends,

Thank you for all of the ways in which you have invested in me over the years. As I head to Furman, I am appreciative of so many of you who have helped me grow both musically and spiritually. I am also grateful to be in a church that supports higher education. The scholarship will be quite beneficial to me, as it will cover part of my freshman year tuition. Again, thank you.

Sincerely, Amanda Cameron

Prayer-ers for Students As our students go back to school, we are looking for people to be Prayer-ers - people who covenant to actively pray for our students, faculty, and staff! We are looking for people to make a specific prayer commitment from our church for our children (infant-college) and for our teachers and school system employees (assistants, administrators, counselors etc..)

If you are willing to commit to adding a child and or teacher to your prayer routine, please contact Paige Sisk at [email protected] or 704-763-4284. Paige will contact you personally with a name or two that will be your specific person to add to your prayers. After that, it will be up to you to continue through out the school year. You can choose to let your person know or remain anonymous. Just knowing someone is praying for you can make a big difference in your life!

Jubilant Seniors The Jubilant Seniors Team is very busy planning great fun for our new church year! On September 14th, we will travel to Hendersonville for our traditional Fall kickoff at Stepp’s Hillcrest Orchard. You can pick your own ap-ples or select from already picked. If lunch at Flat Rock Wood Room is as good as promised, we’re in for a special

treat. We will then make a stop at A Day In The Country (one of a kind gifts), before heading home. Please arrive at church no later than 8:45 a.m. If you haven't made your reservation, please contact Pam Surratt at 704-996-4646.

Most importantly, it is with great pleasure that we recognize six years of outstanding dedication and hard work, provided to our Jubilant Seniors by Frances Gurley and her team. She has given us big shoes to fill and is so

gracious in supporting our new Jubilant Seniors Team.
