Heather

Dear Reader,

Lent is rapidly approaching and by the time this letter is being read we will be well into the season. Mid - Lent brings with it Mothering Sunday - 10th March this year. It seems that in our contemporary society when it comes to Mothering Sunday - or

indeed any other special Sunday - that anything goes. We are encouraged to take mum out for a special lunch, treat her to something special as a gift (often expensive) and I expect to see the cards in the shops any day now for mum, for grandmother and others.

Sometimes it seems as if the hype increases the pressure to spoil mum, but also intensifies the feelings of those who do not have a good relationship with their mothers, those who cannot be mothers, those who have recently lost a mother or who for any reason find this a difficult Sunday.

Perhaps we need to take a break and stand back from the commercialised idea of Mother’s Day and reflect again on the original meaning of Mothering Sunday.

Traditionally this was a day to celebrate ‘Mother Church’ - the place where we were nurtured spiritually. People would try to get to their home church on that day to worship and in the days when many young people went away into service it was a day off. It was a day to return home bearing gifts for the family - simple gifts like fruit from the family they served or flowers picked from the hedgerow. It was a time for family and a time for church.

It was a time to remember that no matter what human relationships were like there was always ‘Mother Church’. There was a place to belong, to find a home and to be reminded that we are all loved by God.

Mothering Sunday can be a challenge for the church today. Not only because of those who need particularly gentle care on Mothering Sunday but also because it challenges us about the way we welcome and care for all those whose lives we touch.

It is a challenge for our community as well - to be aware of the needs around us and care for the broken-hearted in our midst.

Lent is not just about one special Sunday though it is also about life. The new life we see springing up as winter passes and the new life that is God’s gift and promise as we look forward to Easter and the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

May this season be a blessing to all.

or visit to their home.

I will be very grateful to hear from anybody that is happy to deliver a couple of bags of Messengers (they’re not heavy - honest) to slightly further afield addresses than the village

centre. In particular to Knowle and Dursden Lane. You will be helping me directly because at the moment my

Thursday morning collating has been extending to early afternoon as, after collating, I then have to deliver bags to a

number of houses. Can you help? Call me on (01672) 564366.

Friday 8th March

St John’s churchyard tidy-up

During the weekend of March 16-17th there will be a general churchyard tidy–up at St John’s in Pewsey. This will involve some weeding, cutting back encroaching turf, pruning shrubs and hacking back brambles; in other words it’ll be a bit of general garden maintenance.

If you enjoy gardening, please come and help. Whatever your level of experience you will be welcome. Just

bring your favourite tools or just yourself.

The tidy-up will be all day Saturday 16th March from 9.30am and Sunday afternoon, 17th March from 2pm. So turn up when convenient.

For further details contact Anne Mantle on (01672) 564252 or else ask anyone associated with St John’s.

Celebration. Then head back down to the Wesley Hall for a well-deserved breakfast!

Good Friday 29th March

10.30am at St John the Baptist Church

Informal service on Good Friday for children (and adults!)

This will be a short service followed by tea and hot cross buns. We will be taking a pilgrimage round the church, learning about events in the life of Jesus. The children, like early pilgrims,

will be given a keepsake in their pilgrimage bag to help them remember each part of the story. We finish the story on an upbeat, remembering

what happened on that first Easter Sunday.

There will be plenty of time for people to get to the Churches Together service at the

Pewsey Vale Community Craft and Tearoom afterwards.

QUARTET “This is not a retirement home; this is a madhouse...” – Jean Horton (Maggie Smith)

Lifelong friends Wilf (Billy Connolly) and Reggie (Tom Courtenay), together with former colleague Cissy (Pauline Collins), are residents of Beecham House, a home for retired opera singers. Every year on Giuseppe Verdi's birthday, the residents unite to give a concert to raise funds for their home. But when Jean Horton (Maggie Smith), a former grande dame of the opera fallen on hard times - also Reggie's ex-wife and the fourth and most celebrated member of their former quartet - moves into the home to everyone's surprise, the plans for this year's concert start to unravel.

As old grudges threaten to undermine past glories and theatrical temperaments play havoc with the rehearsal schedule, it becomes apparent that having four of the finest singers in English operatic history under one roof offers no guarantee that the show will go on.

Starting with activities on the Plain, the major exercise in February winds down on 4th March; this will be followed by some of the quieter routine training, but still involving some armoured vehicles. The recent Headquarters Newsletter warns that dog walkers have been allowing their animals to "worry" sheep and asks those using the Plain to control their animals or risk prosecution by the authorities. But that should not deter the public enjoying the unique atmosphere, fresh air and varied wildlife up there, some of it very rare.

Recent sightings on the Plain include a few Shorteared Owls and the odd Hen Harrier which is becoming more scarce after failure to breed successfully further north.

During the very cold weather in January, I hope that many of you have been feeding the birds in your garden. I recently contributed to the RSPB Great Garden Birdwatch over the 26th/27th January. We did not have visits from the Brambling as last year, but we did have a "raid" on our feeders by up to 20 Longtailed Tits at one time - very noisy. We also recorded both our regular female Greatspotted Woodpecker, and the male as well which had not been seen here for over a year - the male has a distinct red patch behind the head.

PEWSEY CAMPUS Time for a very quick update on progress towards your future Leisure, Youth and Community Services Campus! As you will already know, Wiltshire Council has agreed to fund our requirements in full. At present we are busy preparing a design brief ready for the selection process of architect(s); indeed, when you read this article we expect to have completed the brief. Short-listing and selection of an architect will then take place over the next month or two. We anticipate discussions towards an agreed design to follow shortly thereafter and we should be in a position to host some Roadshows around the community area to get your valued comments before we go nap on the final version. I imagine this will be late spring or early summer and we will keep you all informed. On-site (Wilcot Rd) works will take place throughout 2014, with a view to opening the doors of the new facility in spring 2015.

The only requirement for which we have been unable to find a solution is for a teenagers wheeled sports arena; we have the money but desperately need a site - minimum 15 metres squared. Any offers?

Then why not come to our Friendship Club for Seniors which meets on a Tuesday afternoon in the Wesley Hall from 2pm-4pm.

We enjoy various activities and games such as Rummikub, Scrabble, Jigsaws, Dominoes, Cards and then we usually finish the afternoon with a light-hearted quiz whilst partaking of delicious biscuits, home-made cakes and tea. BEECHINGSTOKE

Nothing really to report this month- it always is quiet after the Christmas festivities but as I start to sow seeds and look for a bit of warmth, I am aware that the Fete is only 3 months away. I am reminded of the Fete partially by a request received that old crockery should be kept as there are plans for a stall that involves plate smashing. This will obviously require plates to smash and so you are asked to keep any that you may have. More details to follow over the next couple of months.

If there is anything you would like to be included in the village entry please let me, Sally Banham, know on (01672) 851406 or at: [email protected] before 10th of each month and I will try and ensure it is included.

HUISH with OARE

As we enter the season of Lent, we have again Canon Robert Bailey taking two of our services. He has been helping throughout the Team and has proved very popular. His visits to Huish and Oare previously are no exception. This month he is taking the 10.30am Parish Communion at Oare on the 3rd and on the 10th the 6pm Mothering Sunday Evensong at Huish. On Passion Sunday, 17th, we welcome back Canon David Durston to Oare at 9am for our Parish Communion. On Sunday 24th, Palm Sunday, the 8am Holy Communion at Huish will be a cluster service for the congregations of Oare and Wilcot and will be led by our Team Rector.

On Easter Sunday at 10.30am the Parish Communion at Holy Trinity Oare will be a cluster service for Huish and Wilcot congregations. We are delighted to be able to welcome our new Bishop of Ramsbury, the Rt Rev Edward Condry to take this service for us. There will be Easter eggs for all and coffee/tea and biscuits and for those who haven’t yet met the Bishop, this will be a chance to do so.

NORTH NEWNTON

This month it happens that Mothering Sunday falls on 10th March which is our Family Communion Day, so we will be able to make this special. It only happens very rarely, as the Mothering Sunday festival is usually later in the month, so we do hope lots of families in our parish will come along with their mums to receive the bouquets of flowers which we will prepare for you. Please make a note NOW.

Our first Sunday evening service is being CANCELLED due to the fact that most of the regular congregation is unable to attend on 3rd March, as many appear to be going away that weekend.

However, because EASTER SUNDAY is on 31st March, we will be having the full celebration on that day. as an extra service in the month. If you would like to help prepare the church for that day, do please come along at about 10.30am on Saturday, 30th to help spring clean and decorate, depending on your preferred activity. We usually have coffee and hot cross buns together as well! Services for March: 3rd NO SERVICE 10th 11am – Family Communion for Mothering Sunday 17th 2.30pm – Valued Lives 31st 11am – Easter Communion The monthly coffee mornings will be on Saturday 16th March from 10.30am to noon in Hilcott Hall as usual. WILCOT

February has gone for a whole year- Hooray! I hope that the sun is shining as you read this. Firstly, we have a new Churchwarden, Dr Karen MacAuslan, whom, along with her husband, John, most in Wilcot know well and we wish her a very happy tenure. Soon we will also have a repaired church and, hopefully, a new occupant for the vicarage.

Our Services are as usual with an All-Age Matins on the second Sunday at 10.30am and Evensong on the third Sunday at 6pm and everyone will be made welcome. There will be a cluster Easter Service but not at Wilcot. Nevertheless, we will decorate the church and Karen is inviting people to come to the church at 10am on Easter Saturday for this purpose.

The Village Hall is as busy as usual and Len Giddings' Bingo night on February 9th was well attended. Perhaps it might become a more regular event once again. The cricket fixtures have been issued, for Saturdays already. It is going to be a busy season and we still have the Sunday fixtures to come.

We also have elections for Parish Council in May with one vacancy to fill. If you feel that you would like to represent the village, you can apply to Major Edward Ferguson, our Parish Clerk (851466) for details and a nomination form. Parish Councils, along with the PCC, are vital unifying bodies for small communities and, since the introduction of the Localism Bill in Parliament, it is important to ensure that they continue to function effectively to protect our interests.

Woodborough Church News: First of all, can I thank all those who attended and helped at our wonderful Burns Night Dinner in the Parish Room on 26th January, particularly to the organisers Stephen and Janet Campell; everyone said that they thoroughly enjoyed it. Stephen has some very dramatic photographs - these may be a surprise to some - please contact him, because many of them are available for a donation! The Supper and Raffle raised over £700 towards the running of the Parish Room; please remember that the Room is available to hire for events including family and group functions.

Again, our thanks are due to our Churchyard maintenance volunteers who have started to prepare the memorial Garden. Spring must be coming because our croci and aconites are now (early February) in flower.

On 5th February, Peter Broxis and your Churchwarden attended the routine Deanery Synod Meeting in Milton Lilbourne which was visited by both by our new Bishop of Ramsbury and the recently appointed Archdeacon of Wiltshire. We listened to an update on the subject of Women in the Episcopate and future debate, as well as a new Diocesan project entitled "Let Us Talk" which will explore how the influence and support the Church can be spread outside the Church building itself.

Looking to next month, our services are: Holy Communion BCP at 8am on 3rd March, a Parish Communion at 10.45am on 17th March to be taken by Canon David Durston, then we have Evensong BCP at 6pm on Palm Sunday 24th March, with an Easter Communion Service at 11am on Easter Day. Woodborough School: We are already in Term 4 of this academic year! On March 15th our School Council are organising a “Wear Something Red Day” to raise money for “Comic Relief.” Also on this day our instrumentalists from Y4 upwards and all the children from Y5 and 6 are taking part in a Folk Festival at Pewsey Vale School at 6pm. March 18th is the first day of our annual Book Week with special events each day and a visit from the Travelling Book Company, giving children and their parents the opportunity to buy books. Parents Evenings are on March 19th and 21st. Our Easter service will be at 9.30am on Wednesday March 20th. Do join us for this special service. March 22nd is a TD day, so for the children their holiday begins, returning to school on April 8th. Dates to note: March 6th – Mobile Library 2.55pm-3.45pm Woodborough Club; 15th – Easter Bingo; 20th – Mobile Library 2.55pm-3.45pm Woodborough Club; 21st – End of Term 4. Woodborough and District WI: ... held a meeting on Tuesday 5th February at the Social Club where Chris Frankin spoke on the Pewsey Team Sudan Support Fund. This will soon become a registered charity and the name will change to the St Timothy Foundation. It was very interesting to hear how support is given to address the lack of basic education caused by 20 years of civil war by funding teachers and equipment. The competition of 4 Fairy Cakes was won by Barbara and a lovely supper was made by Azalea. The next meeting on Tuesday 5th March is the AGM where members may bring something important to them and speak about it. Visitors welcome ring Elizabeth (01672) 851086. Woodborough Social Club: Friday Nights are Family Nights from 7pm; 1st Tuesdays of the month is WI; 2nd Tuesdays of the month is Railway Club;

St Andrew’s Church

Carol Service: Our traditional carol service was, as usual, well attended with a full house again this year and was organised by Trish and Max Unwin with readings, music and traditional carols, followed by mulled wine and mince pies.

Christmas morning: The Christmas morning Eucharist was lead by the Venerable Alan Jeans, Archdeacon of Sarum, whose lively style was much enjoyed by the 52 attendees including the children present.

Village carol singing: This popular activity was enjoyed by carollers and “carolled” alike and raised £134 for church funds. Our thanks to the singers who turned out an a slightly “mucky” night and also to the Craig and Sarah

Organ Renovation: I would like to thank Nick for his introduction of “MP3” based music while the organ has been out of commission. Any complaints about non familiar hymns should still be directed to Geoff however!

Vestry Meeting and AGM: These will be held on Saturday morning 24th March at 11.30am in the Village Hall and are open to all residents of Wootton Rivers. So please come along.

New Year Pot Supper: Your correspondent much regrets his enforced absence from this fun event, which by all reports went with a swing. “Force majeure” you might say!
