The monthly newsletter of First United Methodist Church of Pinellas Park December 2014
Words from our Pastor
Hi, Church Family,
We are in Christmas season and I hope you all have a
wonderful holiday. I also hope you come to the parsonage
(7998 – 41st
Street) for a church party on December 14th
from 2 pm ‘til whenever. Please bring a dish to share.
Everybody is invited!
I also hope you will consider and pray about giving us
the name of someone so we can send them an
invitation to our Christmas Eve Candlelight Service.
This would be a simple act of evangelism that only
requires you to pray for that person/persons and give
us their name and address.
See you all next Sunday.
In Christ,
Rev. Jeffrey Ice

Take a moment to thank the children for their commitment and enthusiasm, and for using the gifts that God has blessed them with.

COMPASSION M I N I S T R I E S
“…it is good when you truly obey our Lord’s royal command found in the Scriptures: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Suppose you see a brother or sister who needs food or clothing, and you say, “Well, good-bye and God bless you; stay warm and eat well” – but then you don’t give that person any food or clothing. What good does that do?”
-- James 2:8, 15-16 (NLT)
October Can Cupboard Report
The Can Cupboard provided food for 99 families (249 individuals, including 4 homeless).
Thanksgiving Dinner Baskets
Thanks to our church family for their very generous donations to the Can Cupboard throughout the year.
We are especially appreciative of your donations to fill the 35 Thanksgiving Dinner Baskets we distributed.
All the recipients were very grateful!
Special Mention of Thanks To:
Le’s Beauty Salon
Jill Marie and Q Motorsports Racing
Harold Riddle
The anonymous donor who brought in food from Haven of Rest
And a special thanks, also, to our Can Cupboard volunteers who gave
extra t ime to help put together and del iver Thanksgiving baskets.
My December message focuses on devotions:
It all happened in a most remarkable moment … A moment like no other …
God became a man. Divinity arrived. Heaven opened herself and placed her most precious one in a human womb.
Why did God use these people? Didn’t have to. Could have just laid the Savior on a doorstep. Would have been simpler that way.
And he who sustains the world with a work chose to be dependent upon the nourishment of a young girl. God had come near.
Do you like it? I did it just for you. All this for me?
The Messenger Page 6 December 2014
A note for people who read a daily devotion:
The Library’s “Devotions” section has 11 such daily books, two of which are geared toward women.
These can be taken out for the whole year. I just ask that you use them every day for the year; and at the end of the year, return it and choose another for the next year
If you decide not to use the book, please return it to the Drop Box.

Our juniors have almost completed their work on the garden at the north side of the church; we’re just waiting on the stone plaques to be dried and decorated and to watch the plants fill in.
Please also look for (and use!) the recycle bins that are outside and within Fellowship Hall.
Our investiture was the week of November 10th.
We’re looking forward to camp and the beginning of cookie presales in January.
We are continuing our food drive (though things were a little slow in mid-November).

Boy Scout Troop 320 recently assisted with the Annual Fishing for Disabilities Tournament in Clearwater. The Scouts helped with food prep and distribution along with helping youth learn how to fish. Our Scouts look forward each year to using their scouting skills to help teach young people with disabilities the joy of fishing.
The Troop recently had the honor to have four scouts and one leader inducted into the Council's Order of the Arrow.
The Troop is currently fundraising for their trip to High Adventure Camp this summer – their first in many years. We will be attending Sea Base in the Florida Keys in June.
Girl Scout Troop 53 and sister troop 1702 are busy as always!
FINANCE TEAM REPORT
October Giving, Expenses, and Payments : In October, our Church giving was $23,672.56 and our expenses were $27,711.05. This gave us $4,645.44 negative* balance to carry into November. During the month, we paid all the Church’s operating expenses as well as paying the Visa and Sam’s credit cards in full. Monthly connectional giving was $1,653.10 with 65.1% paid as of October 31st, 2014. The month-end balance on the church’s line-of-credit loan is $23,677.49.
Capital Needs: In October, our Capital Needs account received an additional $190.00 from designated gifts. We now have a $5,106.33 positive balance in this account for capital repairs at month’s end. As of the end of October, we have $21,044.32 for roof-repair work. Thank you
We are still gathering funds for the Fellowship Hall roof repairs. If you would like to help pay some of the expenses of this work, please mark your gift “for the Roof”; it will be used for that purpose.
KCC: Our pre-school income was $63,265.25 and their expenses were $73,850.70. This gives them a negative* balance of $10,585.45 to carry into November.
* Negative balances are due mainly to the way the payroll dates fall from one month to another.

God is working in our lives and He is good.
He has blessed us this year.
May we work to bring honor to His house.

TRUSTEES REPORT
Maintenance Repairs:
Several plumbing issues have been fixed; and the ice maker has been repaired.
Roof and Restorations:
The Church's insurance has made payment to Sierra for the repair work being done inside, so they are back to work and should be finishing with drywall and painting and cleaning the carpets.
The roof fund continues to grow as we prepare to make repairs to the Sanctuary roof and also strive towards repairing the Fellowship Hall roof.
Re-Keying:
Forms are being distributed so that we can properly re-key the property based on who needs access to what areas. Please fill out the forms and get the word out to those who share in ministry responsibilities that require access to the buildings so that all are included. This will be a lengthy process but will benefit the security of the church.
Church Decorating and Cleaning:
If you are reading this in time to help out, we encourage you to participate in the decorating and cleaning in preparation for the Christmas season:
Advent Decorating: Saturday, November 29 t h
Hanging of the Greens: Sunday, November 30 t h.
[The regular first-Saturday Church Work Day has been canceled for December.]
Special Note As we transition into next year we pray that our
church family has a blessed Christmas season and remind everyone that we all have a role to
play in this family at First United Methodist Church of Pinellas Park.
Please consider participating in the work days and projects for this next year in any way that
you are able. It will serve to benefit the property as well as build relationships among
our church members.

Pepper Choplin whose music leads us to rediscover the joy, peace, and love of Christmas. The Chancel choir enjoys singing Choplin’s music as he is able to weave familiar hymn and folk songs with new lyrics and original music together. For example, in this cantata, he has woven together the tunes of “Scarborough Fair” and “We Three Kings of Orient Are” with new lyrics to tell the story of the Magi.
Titled “Lead Me to Bethlehem”, this cantata tells the Christmas story from the first song -- in which angels appeared to Mary and Joseph to announce what was to come-- to the final song of the cantata which celebrates the birth of Christ.
Each Sunday in Advent will feature a different Music Ministry group. The handbells will play a triptych of Christmas Carols; Rejoice! will sing an Advent selection, and the Chancel Choir and the Youth Praise Team Choir Chimes will present an antiphonal anthem, “Noel”.
Our Christmas Eve Candlelight Service will include the Chancel Choir’s anthem “One Peaceful Night” with the Praise Kids and the Youth Praise Team Choir Chimes.
The Christmas Cantata, which will be presented on Sunday, December 21st, was composed by
Everyone involved in the Music Ministry is looking forward to presenting our Advent and Christmas musical offerings! We would like to let you know what we’re excited about:
During this Christmas season, our goal is to incorporate all the musical groups of our church in Sunday worship. We hope you are able to join us and that you enjoy the music!
