The Messenger THE SORT-OF MONTHLY NEWSLETTER OF THE CHURCH OF THE HOLY SPIRIT September 2019 Jumping Right In! Hi all! Hope you have had a wonderful Summer. I know it's not quite over but it is a good time to think about the Fall and let you know what the search committee will be doing. We had a somewhat slow start moving into the parish profile portion of the search, as we hoped to recruit more search committee members to broadly represent the parish. Very recently we were told by the diocese through our Regional Canon, Kelly O'Connell, about a new, slightly different short listsearch process. Below are the main differences with this shorter search. The Vestry serves as the search committee - (in our case where we already have a small but committed search committee established the Vestry and search committee will work together.) A shorter profile is created All applications would be made to Kelly, not to CHS Kelly would review the applications and narrow the list of application with the input of diocesan staff The vestry/search committee would receive 4 to 6 names and materials from Kelly to begin interviews On August 4th the Vestry along wth the search committee voted unanimously to move forward with this new shorter search. With vacations over, we have decided to jump right in and meet every week in September to keep our momentum once we have begun. Along with the current Vestry, search committee members include, Gayle Velozo, Judy Higgin- bottom, Judi Nunes & Maureen Kosa. Our first step will be to begin building our parish profile, our resume.A parish profile describes a congregations history, mission and goals, hopes, dreams and the qualities they seek in their next priest. Creating the profile helps us see our life as a community more clearly. We will be gathering information in a number of different ways and some will include whole parish involvement. When the profile is complete it will introduce us in an open and honest way to clergy who are looking for a new parish. If you have any questions regarding the search processes or have any suggestions for our profile please don't hesitate to speak to Pastor Lise, Dawn or myself or any other vestry or search committee member. Praised be my Lord for our sister the moon, and for the stars, which God has set clear and lovely in heaven. Praised be my Lord for our brother the wind, and for air and cloud, calms and all weather, by which you uphold in life all creatures. Praised be my Lord for our sister water, which is very serviceable to us, and humble, and precious, and clean. Praised be my Lord for brother fire, through which you give us light in the darkness: and he is bright, and pleasant, and very mighty, and strong. Praised be my Lord for our mother the Earth, which sustains us and keeps us, and yields divers fruits, and flowers of many colors, and grass. Praised be my Lord for all those who pardon one another for God's love's sake, and who endure weakness and tribulation; blessed are they who peaceably shall endure, for you, O most High, shall give them a crown! Praised be my Lord for our sister, the death of the body, from which no one escapes. Woe to him who dies in mortal sin! Blessed are they who are found walking by your most holy will, for the second death shall have no power to do them harm. Praise you, and bless you the Lord, and give thanks to God, and serve God with great humility. INTERNATIONAL OVERDOSE AWARENESS DAY In recognition of International Overdose Aware-ness Day, members of the community gathered at City Hall for a vigil and continued in procession to St. Anne’s Church. Here is a prayer from the Book of Common Prayer for the victims of addiction: O blessed Lord, you ministered to all who came to you: Look with compassion upon all who through addiction have lost their health and freedom. Re-store to them the assurance of your unfailing mercy; remove from them the fears that beset them; strengthen them in the work of their recov-ery; and to those who care for them, give patient understanding and persevering love. Parish Updates

Monday and Friday soup kitchens to be discontinued. Sadly, the Fall River Community Soup Kitchen has not found a person to oversee the Monday and Friday soup kitchens at CHS. The programs will be discontinued until further notice. The Saturday kitchen will continue to serve on 2nd and 4th Saturdays. New groups are using the building. A women’s AA (Alcoholics Anonymous) group meets on Tuesday nights from 6:30 to 7:30, and a Thursday NA (Narcotics Anonymous) group meets from 6:30 to 7:45. Welcome, friends! The S. Almond Street rectory has been cleaned and restored to good condition. The vestry will be considering what future purpose the property could have. New Addresses: Wayne Vogler is currently at (contact the church office). He is happy to have visitors. Frank Parkhurst is moving Sept. 1 to a new apartment. Contact the church office for details. He also welcomes company.

A GOOD TIME HAD BY ALL!

Great Day for a Carnival! August 3rd was a beautiful, sunny day. Hard-working staff and church volunteers helped set up, and by noon, families arrived to play games, eat food, and have a good time. About 240 people came through. Thanks to everyone!

Last Chance for Retreat!

Do you: Want to have fun? Walk or do crafts? Hang out with people from four Episcopal parishes? Worship in a relaxed manner? Learn about being God’s beloved? The theme of the 2019 multi-parish retreat is “Being God’s Beloved.” The deadline to sign up for the Oct. 25-27 weekend at the Barbara C. Harris Camp in New Hampshire is Sunday, September 9th! Need a ride? Need financial help? Both are available.

Applications for the retreat and financial help are available in the back of the church. Or call the church office.

Thrift Store Reset: New Days and Hours The Church of the Holy Spirit Thrift Store, which has run for over 20 years, is chang-ing days and hours. Dawn Owen is join-ing Florence Lawrence and Donna Clarke, who have been running the store. Starting in September, the new times are 9-12 on Tuesdays and Saturdays. As weather gets cooler, the Thrift Store is in need of winter clothing, blankets, sheets, towels, and face-cloths. All donations of useable items are gratefully accepted!

UIA Fundraising Dinner, September 14th United Interfaith Action unites religious organiza-tions concerned with effective social action in the Fall River and New Bedford area. Their fall fundraising dinner will be held at Our Lady of Light Banquet Hall in Fall River. The evening will cele-brate UIA's leadership and achievements and offer a banquet dinner, performances from various cul-tural groups and raffle and auction prizes. Funding will support ongoing leadership develop and action around their current issue: funding for our schools, supporting more programming for at risk youth, strengthening addiction services in our cities, and building a safer and stronger community for everyone, whether they be new immigrants or life-long residents. For additional information, please contact Sandra Carreiro at 774-955-3887 and [email protected]. Tickets are $35, $17 for children.

If your house were on fire, would it be business

as usual?

Of course not!

On September 20th, adults will join youth all around the world for a Global Climate Strike to call for serious and concerted action on global warming.

If you are interested in joining Pastor Lise and other Episcopal representatives in the strike in Boston, please contact her. Our house is on fire (including the world’s “lungs,” the Amazon rain-forest) and we need to take action!

Can’t go and still want to act? Take the Climate Pledge (go to https://www.episcopalchurch.org/creation-care/pledge) or ask Pastor Lise about Sustain Our Island Home, an Episcopal tool to track and reduce your household’s carbon output. YOU can help the planet.

Creation Care season starts October 4!

Farewell to the Pipers The Rev. Geoffrey and Leslie Piper, rector and music minister, respectively, St. Gabri-el’s Church in Marion, MA, will be retiring at the end of September. The Pipers have been serving St. G’s for the last eleven years, and will be heading for a few months to serve a church in Florida. A leave-taking celebration will be held at the church, 124 Front Street, on Sunday, September 29th at 4pm, re-ception following. If you in-tend to go, please contact the church office at stgabrielsmarion @gmail.com.
