Last issue, I wrote about one of the more painful parts of June’s General Synod of the United Church of Christ. Today, I’ll tell you about my fa-vorite moment.

It was not, I admit, any-where on the meeting’s agenda. In fact, it didn’t happen in the plenary hall, or one of the meet-ing rooms, or during a workshop.

It happened in the exhib-it hall.

I’d been speaking with a friend who lives at a dis-tance (I see lots of them at Synod) when a young woman looked at me, glanced at my name tag, and burst out: “Are you Eric Anderson? I’m so glad to meet you!”

Well, I thought, I am somewhat well known in the denomination. Her enthusiasm seemed unu-sual, but some people are just energetic. I extended my hand and said I was glad to meet her, too.

And then she said, with a

broad smile, “You’re Re-bekah’s dad, aren’t you?”

Well, yes, I am.

It’s long been one of my favorite titles (it’s tied for first with “Brendan’s dad”), but I haven’t of-ten heard it in a church setting. Thirty years in the ministry have led me to think that, well, it’s about me.

But now my daughter is discerning a call to min-istry within the Church, and already asked to take leadership. She has the energy, the integrity, the insight, and the wis-dom for it. All I can do is grin a delighted father’s grin.

My favorite moment at General Synod was dis-covering that a new generation of Church leadership is already present and valued. And yes: that among them is my remarkable daugh-ter.

With aloha,

Pastor Eric

Temporary Interim Hawaii Conference Minister

The Rev. Iese Tuʻuao was approved by the Hawaii Conference Council to serve as the Temporary Interim Conference Minister following Intentional Interim Conference Minister the Rev. Gabri-elle Chavez’s departure on July 12th. Rev. Tuʻuao’s projected term is July 15th to Septem-ber 20th. He will be serving on a part time basis to cover critical

conference functions during the interim pe-riod until the Rev. Dr. David Popham begins his work with us as our new Conference Minister in mid-September.

Rev. Tuʻuao will con-currently continue to pastor the Samoan Church of Hawaii, LMS Nanakuli. He was an Associate Conference Minister in the Hawaii

Conference prior to his call to the Samoan Church of Hawaii. Rev. Tuʻuao also previously served as the Confer-ence Council chairper-son and as the Tempo-rary Interim Confer-ence Minister covering most of the period be-tween the resignation of Hawaii’s previous Conference Minister and the calling of Rev. Chavez.
