The reasons can be found in the first few verses. God could have forced Abram to act a certain way with threats and coercion, but God doesnt act in such a way. Instead, God makes promises. He promises to make: 1. A great nation, 2. That Abram (now Abraham) will be blessed, 3. His name will be great, 4. He will become a blessing, 5. Those who bless Abraham will be blessed, 6. Greetings,

In the 1989 movie, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, the protagonist, Indiana Jones, is an archeologist in search of the Holy Grail. He finds the resting place of the grail, but must pass three riddles/booby traps to reach the holy grail. The third test is a “leap from the lion’s mouth.” With his father close to death and the grail the only hope to save him, Indy rushes through a doorway below a carved lion’s head. He is standing on the edge of an enormous canyon. On the opposite wall is a doorway, but it is too far to jump. Indy has two choices. He can turn around and retreat. Instead, he chooses the second choice and takes a “leap of faith.” He lands on thin air, but as the camera moves, the audi-ence sees a perfectly camouflaged walkway. A pastoral change is always a leap of faith. It is a leap of faith for myself and fami-ly as we join a new faith community. I am riddled with questions of how I will lead and shepherd United Church of Sandwich. It is a leap of faith for you as well. Many of you are wondering how the new pastor will shape or change the direction of the church. July 1st marks a big moment for everyone. July 1st is a leap of faith. Mission of the Month

Jane Kies is a United Meth-odist missionary with the General Board of Global Min-istries teaching Intensive English to students from non-English-speaking countries at Africa University in Mutare, Zimbabwe. Opening in March 1992, Africa University is a United Methodist Church-related institution that is being

nurtured and funded by church members from all over the world as the first private, interna-tional university in Zimbabwe. Jane says, “Working with young people who come to Africa University with a passion to learn English is a rewarding experience. Fluency in English equips them to study for a degree that will ena-ble them to carry out their particular ministries and use their gifts.” Jane is married to Larry Kies, who is also a United Methodist missionary assigned to Africa University.

We welcome our new pastor, Tom Bourke. Joining us with him are his wife Kim, sons Owen and Eli, and daughter Anna. Tom has been in ministry 16 years and a graduate of Garrett Seminary. The Bourke family members are avid fans of the Cubs, Packers, Disney, bike riding, and scouts. To help us get to know and connect with our new pastor we have set up some “meet and greet” sessions. Several people have volunteered to host Tom and Kim and about six more people on various days. Take this opportunity to sign up for

an hour of chatting and fun conversation so they can meet us individually and we become more ac-quainted with them.

EPIC Youth Ministry Group will be focusing on projects serving the congregations and com-munity through the summer. Do you have a fence to be painted? Mulch to spread? Anoth-er small project? We'd love to help YOU! Please submit your project/task to Autumn at [email protected] and we will set up a day and a crew to come help you out! Please keep in mind that these projects should only take a few people a few hours to complete.

2019 United Church Fair Stand Schedule “...God is with you in all that you do.” Genesis 21:22

It is once again time to start planning for another suc-

cessful Fair Stand year. We would like to fill as many positions within the schedule as com-pletely as possible. We call everyone to sign up for as many shifts as you can and in the posi-tions you feel the most comfortable. Remember, it takes eighty-one (81) 4-hour shifts each day to run our stand — Thankfully God is with us in all that we do! Please fill in the sign-up sheet on the next page when you are able to work at the fair, in which jobs you feel the most comfortable, and return the form to the church. We also need people who are flexible to float where needed. If an individual is able to commit to a complete 4-hour shift for three (3) different days throughout the week, the church will purchase a pass for your use. We do not receive free passes from the fair — we buy them.

Wednesday, September 4, 2019 Fair Dates for 2019 thru Sunday, September 8, 2019 Job Descriptions Below: Grill cook (grilling meats for sandwiches; am sausage and hash browns) Fry cook (french fries and tenderloins; am pancakes) Kitchen (prepare chili and cold sandwiches, chop onions, wash pans) Steam table (wrap sandwiches, dish up chili; and dish up breakfasts) Cashier (take orders, handle money transactions) Counter server (collect food onto tray for customers) Drinks (dispense pop, coffee) Pies (slice and serve pie and ice cream) Dining room (refill condiment counter, wipe tables and trays) Floater (put me where needed) “Back at the Range” (baking pies at the church, transporting pies to the fair) Thank you for your help. We look forward to fellowship with our church friends. Next page for Sign-Up
