IT PAYS TO PRAY

Pastor Warren and his wife Judy and their oldest son, Karl, all rode together to the University of Washington in Seattle to set up Karl in his dorm room for his freshman year. Right before Pastor Warren left Karl’s dorm room, he put a Portals of Prayer devotion booklet on Karl’s desk. In the middle of the booklet, Pastor Warren put a five dollar bill. When Thanksgiving break came, Pastor Warren and Judy and their youngest son, Joel, rode to Seattle to pick up Karl. On the way back home, Joel asked Karl, “Did you find the five dollars that dad put inside your Portals of Prayer?” Karl said, “No! I think I threw the Portals of Prayer away. It was a mistake. I didn’t mean to throw it away.” Karl is now 27 and Joel is 22. They both regularly receive a new issue of the Portals of Prayer booklet every 3 months from Pastor Warren. And in the middle of each Portals of Prayer booklet, Pastor Warren always puts a five dollar bill. The boys jokingly say, “It sure pays to pray.” Through the years, the boys have continued to use the Portals of Prayer for strength in their lives. And by the way, the five dollars that Pastor Warren and Judy put into the booklets every three months bring a lot of joy to Pastor Warren and Judy. They say, “It is the best investment we make for our boys.” Prayer is an important part of our lives. Talk to God regularly, and you too will find prayer to be a great blessing in your life.

BUILDING FUND Your continued giving to our Building Fund is greatly appreciated. Through your amazing generosity, we have now collected over $2,770,000 towards the building of our Life Center. In a few months, the Building Committee will be meeting again to be able to show you what the Life Center could look like and what it could cost. This Life Center will be a great addition to our ministry here of leading more people to Jesus and to heaven. You are making a big difference in this Life Center becoming a reality!

THE MESSENGER

It’s Your Best Day! Last month I wrote about the paradigm shift I’m attempting to make in our pastoral care ministry at Messiah. I’m trying to move from, “Out of Sight; Out of Mind,” to “Out of Sight; Still in Mind.” This is in reference to one of the new realities for our congregation, that COVID has created: people’s Sunday morning worship habits are changing. To be sure, this doesn’t mean people aren’t worshiping. But, it does mean, that with the creation of online live-streaming, a certain percentage of worshipers are doing that from home – or other places – than the church building. To be sure, our worship of Jesus isn’t limited to an address. Worship begins with God communicating His love to us in Word and Sacrament. Our response to His love is really what a worship life is about…Sunday mornings, to be sure…but, in

reality, every day of the week is an opportunity to be grateful for what God has done for us in Christ! The “sight – mind” issue for me, has been one of the pastoral care. If I see you on Sunday morning, or Wednesday night, you’re in my brain – and, if something is on your mind, you might write it down or you might tell me. If I don’t see you in worship, it’s possible that you might not be in my brain. And, because I’ve never been all that good at reading people’s minds, I probably am missing all kinds of needs, which could be ministered to. I’ve still been grappling with how to make the pivot from a ‘pre-COVID’ approach to ministering vs. COVID vs. ‘post-COVID’ (if there is such a thing). That’s where the idea of the ‘tele-care’ ministry came about, and we are still developing it. I expect that, in August-September, we’ll launch it. (So, stay tuned.) Having said that, I do want to encourage you to make regular use of Sunday and/or Wednesday, in-person worship and Bible class. I say that, not because of some gratification I feel when the sanctuary is full. I say, that because, in this anxious and conflicted world we live in, the strengthening of our faith is critical. And, the ways that God has provided that strengthening to happen, is through His Word and Sacraments: The Bible; Baptism; Communion. We can read the Bible anywhere. We can remember and celebrate our Baptisms anywhere. Communion takes place at church. (The exception is when we bring Communion to the sick or to people who are homebound.) I say this, not to dump guilt on anybody’s plate. I say this as an encouragement. In the anxious and conflicted world we live in, there are lots of “voices” clamoring for our attention. Many “voices” sound good, but aren’t. And, sometimes, it’s hard to wisely discern truth from fiction. God’s love for you and me, through Jesus, is truth: The real truth. In Communion, He comes to us in bread and wine, Body and Blood: really present. Strengthening our faith, assuring us of forgiveness, and reminding us that we are His ‘beloved.’ Let’s enjoy each other’s company in our sight, and in our minds! It’s Your Best Day…See You Sunday or Wednesday! Pastor Jim Otte

A Word From Vicar Lee Parables

Jesus spoke in many parables. What are parables, you might ask? As one person defined parables to me, they are, “earthly stories with a heavenly meaning.” Jesus says to us in the Gospel of Matthew, chapter 13, verses 34 to 35, “All these things Jesus said to the crowds in parables, indeed, he said nothing to them without a parable. This was to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet: ‘I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter what has been hidden since the foundation of the world.’” We see from these verses that Jesus is the fulfillment of prophecy from Psalm 78, verse 2, as He speaks to crowds and His disciples in parables. He also speaks to us through His living and active word in parables. Jesus knew that the crowds needed to hear His truths spoken in the form of parables and He also knows that we need to have these same truths, spoken in the form of parables. As we read, study, and hear these parables, we have a wonderful Helper, who helps us to understand God’s Word. The Holy Spirit strengthens our faith as we read and hear God’s Word. One special parable that we find in the Gospel of Matthew, chapter 13, is the Parable of the Hidden Treasure. Jesus says in verse 44, “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then, in his joy, he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.” This parable should bring us comfort, joy, and peace, as we see that Jesus is the One who gave up everything for you. In his joy, He bought you and me as His precious and hidden treasure, giving us life in His Name. What an amazing message of truth that is found in just one verse from the Gospel of Matthew, and just one example among many, of how Jesus gives us so much in His Word! May you have the peace which surpasses all understanding in Christ Jesus, our Lord. Amen.

A Song from our Hearts

Each Sunday we come together as a congregation to celebrate the love of Christ in worship with songs of praise! We join our voices together, using music as a way to share the song in our hearts-the sng of joy to Christ, our Savior, an offering to our Lord of our love for Him. We hear voices around us of the young and old, strongly and boldly singing praise to God. We also hear instruments of all types lifted in response to our Lord’s grace and mercy. What a wonderful celebration of praise when all of these

combine together in worship! Have you been blessed with a singing voice or the ability to play an instrument! Do you yearn for the opportunity to express your heart’s song through music to our Lord? Whether you are a young child, youth or adult, there are groups that you can join with fellow members, who also feel the calling of Christ to serve Him through music. there are many ways to serve, so prayerfully consider adding your talents to our music ministry this year. You’ll be so blessed! All groups meet once a week, starting soon!

News from Messiah Lambs Summer break is nearing the end which means it’s time for Back to School. The Lambs will welcome our families back for the 2021-2022 school year on Wednesday, August 11th. Our theme for this year will be Galatians 5:22-23 “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control.” This is a great verse for us to use with the children because we can break it up into monthly themes for them to learn. What a mighty God we serve! Our enrollment is up significantly from the past few years which means every single classroom will be used and we will be adding to our staff. Please contact Amy Myers in the Lambs office if you are interested in serving as a substitute teacher in our school. Please watch for next month’s article for a list of our teachers and for more information about some of the exciting things happening around our school. Until then thank you for your continued prayers and encouragement for all of our teachers and the families of our ministry. Upcoming Important Dates:

The phrase, “The Dog Days of Summer” is a reference to the time when the Sun occupies the same region of the sky as Sirius, the brightest star visible from any part of Earth and part of the constellation Canis Major, the Greater Dog. For the Comfort Dog Ministry, it is the thrill of being out and about with Triton again visiting all kinds of people in all kinds of locations spreading SONSHINE and JOY!

2021

VISITATION PARTNER MEETING-On Wednesday, June 16, the long awaited gathering of our active and prospective Visitation Partners took place at the church. It had been a very long time since we were able to come together and become re-acquainted with each other and with the duties involved in assisting the handlers on visits. The role of the Visitation Partner is an important one as these individuals provide the necessary support allowing the handlers to focus on Triton. If you are interested in being a part of the Comfort dog ministry specifically in the position of Visitation partner, please reach out to Carolyn Nussman or any of the Comfort Dog team members for more information.

Triton made a visit to some special young people at the Phoenix House. These teens are receiving help with challenges in their lives, and as always, Triton’s special personality made everyone feel the comfort and love of

Jesus. His scripture embroidered on his bandanna even encouraged one of the young men to share a favorite scripture of his own, I can do all things through Christ

who strengthens me. Philippians 4:13 SUMMER CAMP-Triton was invited to visit with the children attending Summer Camp here at Messiah. Each week they had a different theme and he visited during animal week, specifically Mammal day. The campers learned about Triton in respect to him being a mammal as well as the special work he does through the Comfort Dog ministry.

VBS-The Summer of 2021 was much busier than 2020 and Triton was right in the middle of it! He made visits to the different areas of activities that were going on during the week of June 21st here at church.

We just want to celebrate another year of serving! Come and greet Triton and his Team on Sunday, August 22nd in between services outside of the Gift Shop as we commemorate our third year serving the Lord through this wonderful ministry! A special slide show will be shown during the offering anthem.
