After Epiphany:
The Great Invitation
February 5: Salt and Light and Righteousness Abounding
In light of who and what God is blessing and how different that is from what the world and
sometimes even the church seems to bless, how do we then live? As salty, light-shining peo-
ple whose righteousness abounds!
February 12: This, Not That Jesus continues to offer concrete examples of what life in God’s
kingdom does, and doesn’t, look like.
February 19: And Now Your Reward Blessings are a gift of God in God’s kingdom. Rewards
are the result of living more fully into the ways of God’s kingdom, or as we might say,
“growing in holiness of heart and life.” Jesus reminds us of ways we can stay on or stray from
the trail God’s kingdom blazes for us in this life.
February 26: Shine! Today we exult in the vision of God’s exaltation of Jesus and in anticipa-
tion of our own transfiguration now and in the age to come. That hope, that vision, drives us
not to stay where we are on the mountaintop, but to get into the valley of sin and suffering
and be a healing and formative presence for all who seek God’s salvation with us in the
weeks of Lent that lie ahead. Ken DeYoung will be our guest speaker during worship sharing
updates for GoServ Global in Haiti after hurricane Matthew. Come learn how we can re-
spond to meet the ongoing needs.

What Do I Believe?
Adam Hamilton believes that for Christians and for others seeking faith, some
powerful answers are contained in the Apostle’s Creed, a historic statement of
foundational Christian faith. In this compelling study, he explores not only what
Christians believe, but why it matters.

Leadership Team Meeting
Jan. 12, 2017
Place: Pocahontas Center, 7:00 pm
Attendance: Pastor Jerry, Chris Radig, Melissa Rahn, Moira Hopkins, Elaine Cook, Linda Fergu-
son, Donnie McLain, Bob and Joan Reinhart, and Judy Pursley.
Action Items:
Chris opened the meeting with devotions and then said a prayer. Minutes were read silently.
Donnie made the motion to approve them. Elaine seconded and the motion carried.
A Treasurer’s Report was given. We had $23,681 less in offerings in 2016 than we had in 2015.
There is $2,262 cash on hand at the end of 2016 as opposed to $14,162 at the end of 2015.
Donnie made the motion to approve the treasurer’s report. Elaine seconded. Motion carried.
Bob R. representing the Mission Ministry Team requested that we amend the budget to give
Larry & Jane Kies $200 more. [change from $1,200 to $1,400] Our support has not changed in
at least four years. Bob made the motion and Linda seconded. Motion carried. Judy P then
had a project proposal for the Leadership Team to consider. She would like to start a Clothes
Closet for people who have had a disaster or are unable to purchase clothes at Thrifty Bou-
tique or Goodwill. Pastor has already given 5 coats out in Nov. and in early Dec. we were giv-
en a number of women’s clothes. After a discussion Judy made the motion to start the
Clothes Closet. Moira seconded. Motion carried.
Pastor then made a motion on behalf of the Nominating Team that we elect Sarah Freeburg
to SRPC. Motion carried.
Ministry Team Reports:
Worship Team: Pastor had us look at the 2016 worship attendance report. The average at Po-
cahontas Center went up from 73 in 2013 to 87 in 2016. Havelock went down from 22 in 2013
to 15 in 2016. Plover also went down from 25 in 2013 to 18 in 2016. Average attendance for
all three centers was 120 in 2013 and 120 in 2016. Feb. 6, is their next meeting.
Education Team: Moira reported that the Sunday School Christmas project Jingles for Haiti
raised $1,856 to be split between the boy’s dormitory and half to the girl’s dormitory. They
held a Fifth Quarter. This was a get-together for middle school kids after a home Friday night
basketball game. 20 youth attended. This was a joint effort with St. Paul Lutheran Church
in Pomeroy and us. They played board games, Uno, etc. and had chips and pop. VBS will be
June 26 to 29, 2017. Next meeting is Jan. 18, 2017.
Outreach Team: Elaine said that they will meet Jan. 16, 2017. The greeter list for 2017 went
out.
Missions: Bob said that they are setting a yearlong goal to purchase a Sukup Safe-T Home for
Haiti. Ken DeYoung will be here on Feb 26 in the 10am worship. The Mobile Food Pantry will
be Jan. 25. Judy P. said that there were 33 served at the Saturday Free Meal and 1carry-out
on Dec. 31. This included helpers. This number was the lowest that we have served. We don‘t
know whether it was the weather or the fact that it was held on New Year’s Eve that contrib-
uted to the low turnout. The next one is on the 28 of Jan.
SPRC: Linda told us they had an organizational meeting, Jan. 9, 2017.
Trustees: Donnie reported that they are coordinating with Murphy Flooring to install car-
peting and lighting in the south end of the sanctuary in the Pocahontas Center.
Finance: Donnie said that a letter was ready to be sent out with the year-end giving state-
ments.
UMW: Joan reported that two of the three circles met in Jan. and Feb. 9 will be an executive
Committee meeting March 3 will be the World Day of Prayer.
Pastor told us that the church gave over $33,000 to Rainbow Covenant Mission projects in
2016. Our Lenten study will be Creed by Adam Hamilton. In it we will be exploring the
Apostles’ Creed. Ash Wednesday is March 1 and this is a six week study. The Leadership Team
is going to be studying Membership to Discipleship by Phil Maynard. We are to read the first
chapter for the next meeting. He called our attention to the article about Pope Francis feed-
ing the homeless and refugees on Epiphany. We now have a Cub Scout Pack that meets in the
Hospitality Hall. We were also given pamphlets about caregivers. Jan. 15 we will receive 8
new members. Continued prayers were asked for Myrtle Saylor and Ray Timan. Donnie closed
with prayer.
Next meeting will be on Feb. 9, 2017 at 7:00pm
Submitted by Judy Pursley
Leadership Team Secretary

REMEMBER THE FOOD PANTRY!
A Time to Read
Five new books were added to the UMW reading list
last Fall. The books from 2012 to 2017 are currently on
the cart in the Fellowship Hall.
A new book entitled "Extraordinary Grace" is an inter-
esting and easy read. Authors Gary Chapman and Chris
Fabry searched the scriptures for examples of God's
grace in the lives of those named in Jesus' lineage and
relate how that same grace is extended to us. An up-
lifting winter read.
