Page T wo T H E M E R C I A D November 15, 1949Religious Strength Through UnityMercyhurst would have her daughters one in mind, onein body, and one in spirit. She would have them one in mindby her endeavor to inculcate Christian education; she wouldhave them one in body by her effort to initiate social activities which would attract every member of the student bodyand which would demand unity; she would have spiritual uni-tyfby her exhortation to us to become incorporated withChrist. I IHow can students of vai ious departments be one in

mind? Elizabeth is studying fine arts; Charlotte is majoringin science; and Marilyn is applying herself to the art of home-making. While each student! is contem plating a {definitefield, divorced in a sense from all others, she is never disassociated from the unity w hich is Christian education. Allthe knowledge she absorbs is presented in thejlight of theChristian ideal. f|J \ft

Because of her social nature, every student seeks adventure and expression in group activity. Mercyhurst affordsher daughters f many opportunities to develop in socialtho ugh t and activity,. Open houses, proms, bonfires, dramatic presentations, and informal parties comprise hersocial calendar. Our Lady of Mercy bids us become a spiritual unity, butwe, through ignorance or impassivity may fail to achieve thisoneness. Perhaps we, as individuals, do receive Holy Com

munion once a week; possibly we, as individuals, do attenddaily Mass, but God asks th at we also adore and praise Himas a Community. This unity of worship Mercyhurst studentsachieve when, joined as members of th e one body, the M ystical Body|of Christ, they adore God as a community: in theMass, at Benediction, and the recitation of the rosary. Whenthe Mother of Mercy offers us the opportunity to honor theSacred Heart of Jesus on First Friday, let us be one in spirit.

Acts of Thanksgiving Mi"It is truly meet and just, r ight and salutary, that we should a lways, and in a ll places give thanks to Thee, O holy Lord, Father Almighty,

eternalJGod, through Christ our Lord. (Common Preface of the Mass)On Thanksgiving Day we will again offer thanks to God for Hissnany blessings. But will we reinforce our words of gratit ude with concrete acts of thanksgiving?God has given us so many gifts and blessingsour life, our understand ing and our free will, our family and friends, and our faith* Ourgreatest act of thanksgiving will be to accept these gifts and to offerthem back to God, having perfected them through our daily acts. So,we would study hard to increase our understanding of God's world, andwe would tryfclways to adjust our will to His way. We pra cticingcharity, would be|considerate and helpful. Thus would we be givingthanks " in all places and at all times" by using well the gifts God has

given us. t i l ^ HThough we are truly unworthy of the least of them, God has givenus these gifts. But God also permits tha t we be|given trials; and theseare no less than His gifts. For, by accepting them, humbly , in imitationof Christ, we grow in virtue and goodness. iThus we can learn patiencebyjbeing attentive through the "dull spots," humility by accepting therebuffs and criticism of others. Even the mee ting of little trials, suchas these, is a constant act of thanksgiving to God. % M i 9Meanwhile we attend Mass frequently to offer ourselves with Christto God, and to petition Him for strength to accept and to grow by ourcrosses, large or small. And so welgive thanks to God "always and inall places." |

FAILURE vs. SUCCESSIt is possible that the Stud ent Board of Discipline may bemade to failand that by us, 1 he students, the best way toprevent such a happening is for us to familiarize ourselveswith the functions, the regulations and the purpose of thisStudent Board of Discipline.Discipline is a necessary fa cto r in the life of every human being. It i i not the purpose of our Board of Disciplineto reprimand but to serve by reminding us of our duty toobeytthe rules of Mercyhurst College. The Board never intended to impose new rules but rather to make every studentconscious of the presence of those regulations which areneeded to ^insure harmony in the lives of one hundred andfifty students. Therefore, in the very beginning, your cooperation wasasked, for it was felt|that you understoodfthe need for discipline and realized the happy consequences that result fromsuch self-imposed regu lation. We felt tha t you were behindusjthe whole way, Now tha t previous misunderstandingshave been cleared up, we ask that you would come to theBoard if you have any complaints or problems. We wantyour viewpoints, your ideas for alsmoother workjplan; tomake this Board a realization and a success we need your cooperation. We are all college women. Therefore, we should beeager toiassume and accept the responsibilities!^ collegelife. We can, then, hope to leave Mercyhurst as intelligentadults, prepared to accept our place in a society which de

mands the acceptance of respo nsibility. There is no place inthe world for weak, irresponsiblefpeople. We must learnnow to face those responsibilities that we must carry on inthe future. IL^K KAH i'.~-Am I Unwanted? Senior Addresses

    Students AirViews on Board

Since October 24 Mercyhursthas had a taste of self-government. For fifteen members of thesenioi class the student board ofdiscipline has meant added workand responsibility. For a numberof offenders it has meant admonitions and fines. But what has itmeant to you? I f"I think the board is an excellent project ," says Margaret Broderick. "It gives the students asense of responsibility and [leavesgovernment in their *hands."Lois Lyons agrees with her viewpoint and thinks i t is t ime thatwe had student] government atMercyhurst .On the other side of the fenceis Mary Beth Gahan who believesthat "such a board should be unnecessary in a woman's college.""
