NEW VOTINGSYSTEM EXPLAINEDUnder the new? ward systemRUS will be composed of 44elected members. Four of thesewill*constitute the execut iveboard and will be elected at largein March of each school year.(Next year 's officers havealready been elected.) Theseofficers will have voice and votein RUS and voice only in theCollege Senate. The rationale forthis change-lies in the fact thatthey represent a group of 1200students and could not thereforebe completely representat ive.The other 39 me mb ers willconst i tute the representat ivesand they will have voice and votein both the College Senate andR U S . These representatives willcome from the five establishedwards. Five? oi l them fwill"; be

elected in the Fall term of eachacademic y ear and will be Freshmen. One will represent eachward and will run at large fromhis entire district. The other 35membersffwill be electedTuesday; seven twill be chosenfrom each ward. sw3The wards are groups of approximately 200 students whichconstitute all of the presen t majordepartments in the college.(.Thefinal number of represenatives tocome from each area wasdetermined by percentages. Eac hdepartment constitutes some percent of their ward. That per centof seven (7), the total number tobe chosen from each ward, is thenumber of students to be electedfrom a d epartment. Each voter will vote for onlv

those students who will representhis own field of study, and musttherefore vote in his own districtor ward . For example, faSociology or Social Work majorwill vote in ward A in theSociology area. (Law Enforcement composes the other partor she will betwo represen-list oEHfiveof this ward.) Heable to vote fortative from anominees. J ^jfej . The purpose of this system isthreefold: L

if to makelthe RepresentativeUnion of * Students more"representative;" &2 . to give commuting students abetter opportunity t o b e in studentgovernment; and3 . to encourage involvement inmore academic activities.BOARD OF TRUSTEES(GOVERNING BODY)

^Every year the student body isasked to choose new studentrepresentatives. However, students are nevergiven any real criterion to judgecandidates. $Sincef voiting records aren'tkept, the Merciad has decided topublish the /attendance recordsfor College Senate and R.U.S.meetings to aid students in theirvoting selections. I I |Listed below are the attendancerecords >of t h i s $ | | y e a r 'srepresentatives. There we re a total of 14 R.U.S.and Senate Meetings this ye ar.

The R.U.S. constitution statesthat "Any representative whomisses three Represenat iveUnion of Students | meetingswithout sending an alternate willbe dropped from the Union. Also, only four alternates may be sentby any one representative duringthe course of the year."*If one believes in a strict constitutional interpretation, 21R.U.S. members should havebeen dropped for missing 3 ormore meetings and 1 member forhaving too many alternates.

This would eliminate hall of thepresent R.U.S. membersR,U.S. Attendence Record

    ACTIVITY SCHEDULE

R.U.S. IMinutesThe Representaive Union ofStudents met Wednesday, May 2,1973 at 7:42 in Room 214 Zurn^ |Sharon Staso moved that nextyear's RUS officers be allottedthe money through the business?office to pay for three?credits.Seconded and passed by vote of 13to 3.1 The rationale for thisdecision was two-fold:1. Merciad Staff, LiteraryMagazine Staff, and PraeteritaStaff receive monetary compensation through the businessoffice for their services; and| 2. The amount was not so grea tas to encourag e running for officefor the financial element alone. It was decided that the committee on allotments from the last, meeting would propose a complete system at the next meetingfor the membe rs to vote on at thattime. Suggested elements to

constitute a club were: an advisor, a constitution, electedofficers, and perhaps a mandatory number of memeb ers.I It was decided thati the finalRUS meeting for the 1972-1973school year would be held at anofficial dinner. The membersgive power to the executive boardto determine which of the presentmembership should be invited tothe meeting. As far as possible, the constitution should befollowed. Borderline cas es will bedecided by the executive board. The meeting adjourned a t 8:43.Respectfully submitted,Alexis WalkerSecretary

Sr. Matthew Com ments On R.U+S.RUS serves a dual purpose: inaddition to conducting student

mgpi ra*ws^w**^activities, it constitutes one thirdof the membership of the Mcrcyhurst|College? Senate. SisterMary Matthew, who will next

year serve the remainder of herterm as Senate President, viewsthe new constitutional revision ofRUS as aniop por tuni ty forstudents^ to 8 become moreacademically involved in theSenate. She is convinced tha t it is"a good plan" and is certain thatit will allow \for ] adequaterepresentat ion. fThe SenatePresident hopes that students willtake advantage of this chance tobecome involved in an area whichshould have meaning to eachindividual. She hopes for an othersuccessful ^year ;of Senatebusiness and is looking forward toworking with the soon-to-be-elected RUSmembers. " * t i i !
