It’s Festival Time7th Annual Southern Hot Wing Contest and Festival Saturday April 18 beginning at 10 am South Main Street (between Linden St and St. Paul Ave)

Paul Gagliano created the annual hot wing event after discovering Memphis to be the number one consumer of hot wings in the nation. He decided to use the festivities to raise money for Ronald McDonald House, which provides a free place to stay for families of children receiving cancer treatment. Already the event has raised $25,000 for RMH and Paul anticipates equaling that amount this year. In additon to tasting some of the best hot wings in the South, the festival includes nine local bands on stage and a silent auction. Cost of entrance is $3 and is open to all ages.

17th Annual Rajun Cajun Crawfish Festival Sunday, April 19 from 12-6 pm Wagner Place (between Union and Beale).

Featuring a large crawfish boil, with 500 pounds of free crawfish given away at noon, the annual Gumbo Cook-Off and Zany Cajun Contests. Admission is free, however, if you want to receive unlimited crawfish and drinks, plus a shady spot to enjoy the music, advance tickets are available for the Swamp VIP Tent for $50 per person. Mike Warr, representing Porter-Leath, the benefactor of the event said, “This event gives people a chance to come out and enjoy an authentic Cajun event on the banks of the Mississippi – all while raising money to further Porter-Leath’s mission.” For more than 150 years, Porter-Leath has been the primary resource for Memphis’ at-risk children and families.

Visiting the Memphis Farmers Market on Saturdays is truly a treat for the senses. As you approach the pavilion between South Main and Front streets, you smell the aromas of roasting peppers and freshly ground coffee beans; you see the vibrant colors of recently picked wildflowers and heirloom tomatoes; you hear the upbeat notes from a banjo or harmonica, and you can certainly treat your taste buds to freshly baked goods or freshly picked produce.

Going on its fourth year, the MFM continues to be run by an all volunteer board of directors as well as volunteers from every area of

Memphis who give, on average, 3 hours of their time every Saturday. The 2009 season promises the continued quality of local goods, ranging from fresh cut flowers and heirloom vegetables to organic meats. These offerings come from over 60 vendors who come from across the mid-south to be a part of the market.

The mission of the MFM is to create a healthier community through education about eating local, supporting and enhancing the farmers and artisans that are our neighbors and provide area farmers and producers with sustainable business opportunities.

Midtown Bike Company Daniel Duckworth has been working in a bike shop for 16 years, and now the owner of Midtown Bike brings his expertise to the Downtown community. Not only do Daniel and his staff carry a

Beignet Café “New Orleans meets New York” at South Main’s newest eatery, a comfy café that serves homemade soup, salads and sandwiches. Be sure to try their salmon BLT, homemade mac-n-cheese balls, several vegetarian options, and of course, their beignets. Plans are also in the works to add a wine lounge and a jazz brunch on the weekends. Their walls hold work of local artists. Flight Restaurant and Wine Bar Russ Graham and Tom Powers have a gorgeous location for their new restaurant and their goal is to offer “more bang for their buck” to patrons looking for a new dining experience. Flight originated from the idea of serving samples of beverages in a form called flights. Primetime Sports Bar Preston Lamm is no stranger to Downtown and now the business developer has added an eighth Downtown business to his list—Primetime Sports Bar, which occupies the former space of Jillian’s, located at the corner of 2nd and Peabody. They now offer a bowling league and service industry specials on Sunday nights. Wrapzody: It’s all in the familyand Wanda continues the tradition operating Wrapzody, along with her daughter Erin. Just across the street, Pop Yates, Wanda’s father, runs Café Napoleon, which her brother began. Wanda started pitching in after her brother passed a couple years ago and it inspired Wanda to do her own

created Wrapzody with that philosophy in mind, desiring to give Downtowners a lighter alternative. The Wrapzody menu includes customer favorite Smokey Jack Wrap, which includes smoked turkey, ham, bacon, and provolone; the Thai Chicken Wrap with grilled chicken, Chow Mein noodles, and Asian ginger peanut dressing, and a dozen others. Not just a “white or wheat” girl, Wanda offers her patrons a variety of tortilla wraps: tomato basil, spinach herb, and garlic herb. Also served are Belgian waffles and breakfast croissants and a variety of fresh salads and desserts.

Wrapzody celebrated its first birthday recently, and Wanda is pleased with

how she’s found a home in the neighborhood. Her customers love her and the wraps she creates. “She’s got the freshest sandwiches downtown,” bragged Jan Walker, one of her loyal customers. “I’ve told everybody about her chicken salad.”

While Wanda loves running her deli, she continues to be committed to the Memphis Police Department, now in her eighth year of service. From locking ‘em up at night to wrappin’ it up all day, Wanda Russell, aka “wonder woman,” is here to save the day…and your figure.

Beale Street is known as the home of the Blues, but existed long before blues was the recognized form of music we know today. Beale Street was named in 1841 after an unknown war hero. In the 1920’s it became a local and national focal point known for gambling, prostitution, voodoo, drinking and, of course, great music. Filled with night clubs, restaurants, theatres and pawn shops, those businesses and the notorious reputation that went with them are long gone. Situated in the 38103 zip code, the safest address in all of Memphis, there has remained one constant: A.Schwab’s dry goods store.

Started in 1896 by Abraham Joseph Schwab, dry goods were sold on planks suspended over barrels as a men’s haberdasher and dry goods store. The store expanded to hardware, baby clothes, cosmetics, uniforms and boots. During the fuel crisis of the 70’s they sold oil lamps, and added

Now, however, they carry many items truly unique to their store. While many of the items can be found in specialty stores from time to time, only A.Schwab has combined the eclectic mix of dry goods, novelty items, souvenirs and eccentric items in such a fashion to make the most robust flea market envious, from Mardi Gras masks to books on redneck yoga and everything in between. On a recent visit I saw Aunt Bee’s Mayberry Cookbook, leather belts, sombreros, walking sticks, BBQ sauce and brass Buddhas. Their tables and display cases, many over a hundred years old, are a result of the frugal nature of the founders of this long-standing establishment. Each year the Schwab’s would evaluate the books and determine if they could afford fancy displays like their competitors, and each year the family decided to wait another year. Now when a you walk in it feels like you are going back in time. This is part of the charm of A. Schwab’s. You are seeing a
