UPDATE ON OUR SEARCH FOR AN INTENTIONAL INTERIM

We are pleased to announce Rev. Donna Cassity has accepted the opportunity to serve

as our next Intentional Interim Senior Pastor.

Donna Cassity will begin her work here Monday, Dec. 1st. Many thanks to those who served on

the Intentional Interim Search Committee: Adam Hubley, Kathleen Bidney-Singewald, Lianne LaTorre, Chip Adams, and Deacon Chair, Melanie Clark. We appreciate their dedicated service to this important task. Read on for a brief bio of Rev. Cassity. We look forward to welcoming her and working with her as we continue our journey.

Please join to celebration as we welcome her to the pulpit on Sunday Dec. 7th.

The Reverend Donna Cassity is an Interim Transitional Minister and Life Coach with over 19 years of helping congregations through change using organizational tools from Appreciative Inquiry (AI) and church leadership development to revision their future, create new goals and maximize their gifts. Donna’s focus has been on building up the body of Christ through faith and spiritual formation, discovering spiritual gifts, healing and teaching. Donna seeks to bring transformational experiences to worship through creative worship and using the lectionary to bring biblical principles applicable to current life.

Donna is a Licensed Registered Nurse whose life mission is helping patients heal and find wholeness. Her emphasis has been in the spiritual care and management of the changes brought by disease for patients suffering from cancer and other debilitating illness. Donna understands how the impact of illness affects all of life and so she extends healing to the patient’s family as well. She has worked at prestigious hospitals that include: Parkland Memorial Hospital, Gainesville, Fla., Baylor Medical Center Dallas, Texas, Presbyterian Hospital Dallas, Texas and Yale New Haven Hospital as a nurse care manager and practitioner in a variety of settings. Donna is also a Master Reiki practitioner and uses healing touch to help people connect to a deeper spirituality and relationship with Christ.

She is a mother and friend of three grown children, their spouses and grandmother for three beautiful grandchildren (and one on the way!) Donna lives in Westville with her 2 year old Standard Poodle, Bella. In her leisure time, Donna loves to play outdoors: hiking, picnics on the lakes of Connecticut, cooking, walks with Bella on the beach and traveling. Donna enjoys reading, writing and leading spiritual retreats to help others connect closer to God and their highest self.

Settled Pastor Search Committee Update

(as printed in the bulletin for Sunday Nov. 23, 2014)

Ahhhhhhhh…

It’s nice that a relaxing holiday is coming… You can rest for a while with the com-mittee’s gratitude for responding with your generous input to the Pastoral Search Process Survey. Over 200 (Two Hundred!) of you took the time to thoughtfully share your outlook on where we are, and want to go as a church …

Now your committee has the opportunity of coalescing your collected inputs into a common vision – representative of the spirit of the future we all want to enjoy.

This overview will serve as a beacon-light for: 1.) The Committee during the selection and 2.) The Pastor once selected.

That 200 voices can all speak together is the real bounty of our Congregationalist spirit. Rest, and give some thanks for that, …come Thursday.

All best,

Carol Robbins For your search committee

THE MEETINGHOUSE FAIR RECAP

Our Christmas fair this year was a great success due to your gracious help and support. While all of the numbers aren't in yet, it appears that we have exceeded the amount raised for charity over last year. We certainly couldn't have done that without your help. You are all to be congratulated! A huge thank you to all of our

volunteers and all who so generously donated items for the Fair. You made it a success! We could not have done it without all of you.

A special thank you goes to all of the volunteers who worked so hard Saturday. Loretta James and Cathy Hopkins the Co-Chairs of the fair did a splendid job and spent many hours preparing for the day. The funds raised will go toward various charities. In faith and love, Marcia Stone and Patty Holdridge Co-Chairs of the Women’s League.

Here’s where to get the latest scoop on what’s happening musically in the church! For even more information, call Nathan at: (203) 245-2739, ext. 21.

DANIEL HAND STUDENTS TOUR THE ORGAN In the middle of October, a combined group of students from Daniel Hand High School took a field trip to our church to take a tour the historic 1930 Möller pipe organ. Band Director John Gage’s “Intro to Piano” class, along with Laurie Humphries’ film class, came to listen to and record the sights and sounds of this unique instrument. The hour-long presentation by both Nathan and Wally was a big hit with the students and teachers, and plans are already in the works to repeat the field trip for each of the next two trimester courses!

TOCCATA AND FUGUE BROADCAST OVER THE GREEN ON HALLOWEEN As some of you might know, there are two large speakers in the church steeple that broadcast the sound of the organ with surprising clarity across the entire Green when a certain switch is turned on. At noon on Halloween, I turned on the switch and played Bach’s famous 10-minute Toccata and Fugue in D Minor for the fun of it. A number of people stopped to listen, including members of the Charlotte Evarts Archives and the Madison police who were on The Green setting up for that evening’s “Trunk or Treat” event. A few folks from the Legion even came into the Sanctuary to hear it!

ADULT CHOIR SINGS AT INTERFAITH THANKSGIVING On Sunday, November 23rd, the Adult Choir took part in the Interfaith Thanksgiving Service at St. George’s Church in Guilford. They sang Bless the Lord, O My Soul on their own and joined together with all the other singers from local faith communities to sing a beautiful arrangement of For the Beauty of the Earth by Mark Patterson. Director Kevin Buno and Father James Shanley organized the service, and those attending (and participating) had a wonderful afternoon of uplifting spoken word and music of thanksgiving.

SHARE IN THE MINISTRY OF THE CHURCH ON SUNDAYS!! A Reader and Greeters are needed each week.

Look for the sign-up sheet in the hallway outside the main office,

choose what you want to do and pick a day!

CHRISTMAS PAGEANT ON SUNDAY, DECEMBER 21ST Last year, it was a big success having the children’s Christmas Pageant the Sunday before Christmas, so we are doing it again! By the time this newsletter is published, much more information will have been made available including rehearsal dates and times. Both Sue and Nathan are looking forward to working with the kids again and having them present a meaningful pageant celebrating Christ’s birth.

SING ON CHRISTMAS EVE! As in past years, anyone who would like to sing with the Adult Choir for the 10:00 pm Christmas Eve service is welcome to start attending Thursday evening rehearsals in the Chapel from 7:30-8:30 pm. Any Interested singers are requested to start attending no later than December 4th. We hope you will join us—please get in touch with Nathan beforehand so he can prepare music for you. Thank you!

CHRISTMAS WITH THE STEINWAYS SHAMELESS PLUG Several years ago, I recorded a Christmas piano album on the Steinway in the Undercroft. It consists of 15 tracks of arrangements by Mark Hayes and Joseph Martin, two of my favorite arrangers. In March of 2014, it was picked up by the Arabesque Records label in New York and is now available for purchase as .mp3 files through Amazon.com and iTunes.com. However, I have a number of actual CDs available in my office here at the church, and they are only $15 each. They are professionally manufactured with a printed-cardboard case and wrapped in

plastic. If you would like a copy, just let me know, and I’ll be happy to get you one!

IN THE SPIRIT OF ADVENT! Do you ever wonder what to give your friend & family who already gave everything??? During Advent, which begins Nov. 30

th, the Outreach Commission

will give you opportunities to give Alterative Giving Gifts. Donations of any amount will enable you to get a card to send acknowledging a gift in their honor. We will have a table at Coffee Hour with cards printed for such organizations as Madison

Food Pantry, Heifer or CCA, and generic cards for you to fill in other organizations. Please make your checks out to FCC and put the organization in the memo.

ORGAN WORK ABOUT TO START A bunch of work on the organ is about to start at the beginning of January. The A. Thompson-Allen Organ Company of New Haven will be fixing some leather components of the console and inside the pipe chambers that have been failing over time. The Thompson-Allen Company has serviced this organ since its installation back in 1930 starting with Aubrey Thompson-Allen and continuing with his son Nick Thompson-Allen and Joe Dzeda, co-owners of the company since Aubrey’s retirement in 1973.

Surprisingly, a tremendous amount of leather is used in pipe organ construction, and when all the leather was replaced in the 1980’s, it was of an inferior quality to what was installed in 1930, although it was the best available to organ manufacturers at that time. It was given a life span of about 30 years, and now, 30 years later, it all needs to be replaced.

There is an immediate, “small” job about to be tackled in January to replace external components that are on the verge of failure, but there is a much, much larger job that will be coming in just a few years. That larger job will entail several months of labor, removing all 1,547 pipes to replace the leather valves and other hard-to-reach, internal components. The cost for this restoration is somewhat staggering, and it will take a lot of community awareness and fundraising to pay for it. Although it is still a few years down the road, you can expect to see more information and fundraising opportunities sooner rather than later.

In the meantime, this “small” job—if you can consider $32,000 to be a “small job”—will be funded by two trust funds: one dedicated solely to upkeep of the organ, the other for music maintenance. For those interested in organ stuff, the plan is to dismantle, rebuild and reassemble the five pitman windchest key-action primary machines; and rebuild the four wind-pressure regulators beneath the main windchest, replacing all four corner gussets on each of the regulators. It is an extremely labor-intensive operation that will last the entire month of January.

During that time, workers will be in the church Monday through Friday to do their thing, but the organ will be put back together at the end of each week so it can be used for Sunday services. In the meantime, Bill Speed, the music director at the First Congregational Church of Guilford, has graciously offered the use of their organ for my own practice to prepare for Sunday mornings and other events. I will be there a few hours each week, so my own presence here at the church will be slightly reduced during that month.

I could talk (write) about organ stuff all day long, and if you are curious about the organ and would like to know more, please feel free to e-mail me ([email protected]) or call me (203-245-2739, ext. 21). We have a very unique instrument that is known across the shoreline if not across the state, and it is my privilege to serve as both the organist and the organ’s “curator” while I am here. Be sure to take a look online under the music section at our website to find out more about it, view historical documents (including the original 1929 contract) and even listen to sound samples. No wonder pipe organs are called “the king of instruments”!

RECOGNIZING A SPECIAL 47 YEAR RELATIONSHIP: THE FIRST CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH AND THE EXCHANGE CLUB OF MADISON.

The two organizations celebrate an almost 50 year relationship. By Brian McCready (Patch Staff) Updated October 31, 2014 at 6:51 am

The photo (at left) commemorates a very special time 47 years ago when two lifelong representatives – one from the Exchange Club of Madison and one from the First Congregational Church of Madison – were there to remember the beginning of that important union for their organizations, the Town, and all of the citizenry in Madison.

Since a large number of the Exchange Club were also members of the Congregational Church, the relationship grew from the Exchange Club’s initial

request to use the wonderful Green for their annual Chicken BBQ.

In celebration of the union that grew between the two organizations serving the community of Madison over the past 45-50 years, the Madison Exchange Club presented its highest Award, The Book of Golden Deeds, to the First Congregational Church of Madison.

Standing on the front steps of the Church and receiving the Award are Mr. Wally Stone, Sexton and 47-year member of the Church and Mr. Charles Reese, Head of the Church Council. Presenting the Exchange Club’s Award is Mr. Bill Lawlor (center), a 47-year member of the Madison Exchange Club.

If the Exchange Club had not requested permission many years ago to use the Green for their special Event, it’s possible that today we might not have any antique shows, concerts or any other events on the Green.
