How It Works
100% Peer operatedVery committed and dedicated board, staff,
volunteers and stakeholdersCan do and will do attitude Lots of flexibility; treatment is restricted to
doMainly out the box and lots of collaboration
with visionaries with faithMany people many approaches
Why Start McShin?
No more room at the inn
Recovering people aware of many needing help
Emerging recovery movement
We are responsible for our own
Helping others is integral to sustaining our recovery
Why We Do This
70 percent of community service boards reported no capacity or inadequate capacity for substance abuse services. In communities where CSB’s (Community Service Boards, VA’s tax funded SA delivery system)are able to provide services, the average waiting period before services is 25.4 days.
In Virginia, 582,2873 Virginians who meet criteria for either illicit drug abuse or dependence or alcohol abuse or dependence.
Community Collaboration
Treatment providers; private/public Faith based Recovery community Criminal justice Families Employers C-SAT, recovery month Faces and Voices of Recovery NCADD
What worked best
Be a citizen Become the media best friendsGo to political events and be faces and voices
of recovery, this builds trustHelp Sheriff’s with jail programsOffer court referral services Go where others don’t Always keep the new comer and family first,
they are the most important people in the process
What does not work
Do not disenfranchise other stake holders, try always to be inclusive of other organizations
Do not fight or argue with other path ways to recovery people
Do not offend government programs and the people running them
Do not speak down to consumersDo not try to go it aloneDo not be discouraged
If I had your power
What can you do really? Quit settling for business as usualSeek out and embrace “gung ho!” recovery
