Why did you choose Mary Help? Growing up, I always had a really good understanding of Mary Help. My mom is a Mary Help alumni, and I went to summer camp here from age five to age thirteen. In eighth grade, I looked at three schools, Mary Help being one of them. I then realized slowly that I didn't like the other schools because they weren't Mary Help. Mary Help has this genuine warmth and friendliness that, in my opinion, is something hard to find in some schools. The students' authenticity gave the school atmosphere that was kinda tough to resist. Looking back, did you ever expect that you would be where you are today? Being where I am now is somewhere that I had always dreamt of being, but never really thought I could reach. In grammar school, I never totally saw myself as the strong leader I am now, even though I am still working on my leadership skills. But I am extremely proud of the person I am developing into as we speak. You were invited to go to Miami to attend a Salesian Youth Leadership Conference along with Natalie Lamendola and myself. What did you talk about in these conferences? In the conference, we talked about a number of things.

To sum it up, we mainly talked about how our schools could spread the Salesian message to fellow students, our communi-ties, and basically everyone in the 2017-2018 school year. Of course, the message would be spread in a non-forceful way, in which we talk about just what the Salesian youths of today are all about.
After your time in Florida, has anything changed? My perceptions of many factors were changed due to my visit to Miami, but I think a change that shocked me the most were my own realizations about Mary Help were changed. I find that at Mary Help, from the moment you are a freshman, you
are introduced to the Salesian ideals through education and faith. As you move to other grades, this Salesian understanding gets deeper and deeper, especially after you go on a Leadership Retreat. At Mary Help, you are always going to have the Salesian beliefs and philosophies to support you no matter your age or how religious you are. I found this weekend that at other schools, it was admitted that you don't really "become a Salesian" until you go on a Leadership Re-treat. At Mary Help, we are extremely lucky to have the support of Salesianity from the sec-ond we walk through the school doors for the first time to the last time we walk out, and beyond. 4

As I turned from watching my ball glide towards the pins, I won-
dered, "What sport is better than bowling?" I Looked up at the
scoreboard. Mary Help (JV) with a total score of 389, it read. This
was the second game we’d won since the bowling season started. I
don't remember the time or date of our victory, because all I cared
about was the fact that Mary Help's bowling team had won. In the
past two months, our routine has been to sit, get up, get our ball,
throw our ball, wait for the result, and then repeat the process until
the end of the game. Now that the season is coming to a close,
we’ll have to return home with our usual routines in mind. It’s going
to be a hard adjustment, because bowling is so fun and such a
great sport. I recommend that everyone try it out , because you
might just discover that you love it.
The MHCA basketball team has been giving it their all these last few games. They not have won yet but it's always close and you
can just how much hard the girls put into the game. Our basketball is nowhere near being short of spirit for the game. Also our very own cheerleaders performed during halftime and did amazing. Their energy was off the chart and really got the coward going. The basketball team took a win against Hawthorne High School
and blew them out of the park. It's their first win. Way to go girls! Keep up the good work!

The March for Life, the largest pro-life rally in the world, takes place on or around the anniversary of the Supreme Court decision of Roe vs. Wade, which legalized abor-tion. This year, on January 27, 2017, over 30 students and faculty from MHC Academy attended the event. The March for Life was started in 1974 by Nellie Gray, one year after the Roe vs. Wade deci-
sion. The 20,000 protesters on that day were hoping to reverse the Su-preme Court's decision. After that day, Gray turned the "March for Life," as it was named, into a yearly event in pro-test of abortion. This year, Vice-President Mike Pence spoke at the rally. According to The Wall Street Journal, "Mr. Pence is the highest-ranking elected official ever to speak in person at the March for Life." The presence of the Vice-President is indicative
of the new ad-ministration's pro-life stance and support of the pro-life movement. The Mary Helpers at the March braved the cold to stand up for what they believe in, which is rights for all human beings from the moment of conception. Posters saying, "For Those Who Can't," "To Preserve Families," and "Families Deserve Better Than Abortion," voiced the idea that there are other options available for unwanted pregnancies.

Teacher Spotlight: Miss Piscatelli
How did you become a teacher at Mary Help?
A friend of mine who attended Mary Help informed me of an opening and the rest is history!
What is your number one pet peeve about
students?
When they forget to do their homework even when it is the easiest
assignment like getting their syllabus signed. :)
What are your favorites? (Book, movie, store, song, etc.)
Favorite movie: 10 Things I Hate About You. Store: lululuemon.
Song: Anything from the ‘90s. Hobby: Yoga! TV show: Friends.
Place to Vacation: The Caribbean. Food: Cheesecake. Color: Pink.
Artist: Edgar Degas.
If you could have any career, other than teaching, what would you want to do?
Run my own yoga studio on a tropical island! What is the best thing about Mary Help?
The people! Even though it is my first year at Mary Help, I already feel like I am part of the family.
Please share one other thing about you that students may not know.
My biggest fear is spiders/insects (although some of my students proba-bly already know this because they’ve had to kill bugs for me in my
classroom).

Keeping Up With the Nuns:
Sister B
By Alondra Brito
What did you do before your vocation? Before I joined the convent I was in college majoring in sociology and social work. I was a full-time staff member of a no-kill animal shelter. I would take care of the dogs and rehabilitate the animals that'd been abused.
You mentioned you were once proposed to– can you tell the
story?
He was one of my best friends. The proposal happened while I was in formation as a sister. My friend proposed to me and said "You can leave the convent and we can get married." It would've been great. Although it absolutely killed me, I said no, but that I still wanted to be friends. We're still friends but it was very hard. I was being offered pretty much every-thing I ever wanted in a guy, but I had to say no. God was calling me somewhere else. Now he's a priest. I think we both ended up in right vo-cation.
As a sister, did you ever have any second thoughts or doubts? Yeah, absolutely. I mean I think we all have our moments, no matter what it is - We've all had moments of wondering, "Is this the right thing? Is this where I'm supposed to be?" Sisters are people too, so we also have those doubts. Every day, it's a choice to be faithful to the commit-ment that I've made. I could be happy doing a lot of things, but being a sister fulfills me in a way nothing else can. There's a part of me that I found in this lifestyle that I didn't even know was missing. Even when those moments of doubt come ), I know that if I persevere through them, I'll find peace. Just hold on during the hard times and God will be faithful. 8
Describe an ordinary day for you-- from the time you
wake up until you go to bed.
I get up at 5:15am and have to be in the chapel at 5:40
for reflection on the scripture (or meditation). We have mass
at 6:15. After that, we do morning prayers (the psalms,
which are the same prayers that Jesus prayed during his life). Then, we
have breakfast and study hall - or some kind of responsibility that starts
right away. If I’m not in my office, I'm usually running all over campus
doing things. When school ends, I'm out of my office by 4pm. I then take
some time to pray, read, or walk. At 5:30, I have spiritual reading. 5:45 is
evening prayer, which is praying of more psalms. Dinner is at 6:15, and
all the sisters eat together. We wash dishes after dinner and have recrea-
tion. I'm in my room at around 8-8:30 - which is when I take some time
to read or study or watch something on YouTube. I try to be asleep by
10.
Name your favorite Mary Help memory. Hm. Well, there's a lot. I really love the Don Bosco day we did 2 years ago where all the different schools came. That was really wonderful for me be-
cause I spent months working on that - it was a ton of work to coordi-nate. To see everyone there and have a good time, it really made it worth it. I think young people today don't get to be young people - so many of us are expected to be mini adults and have all the answers. This idea of relaxing and having fun and just getting to do things that are enjoyable without their being all this pressure behind it - its such a rare thing. To give Mary Helpers this opportunity to relax and have a good time was such a great gift for me.

How did you prepare for the competition? I practiced singing my song every. Single. Day.
My living room has some pretty dope acous-
tics, and I would belt that song out any time I
was home alone. The thing about singing is this: half of it is the
talent of your voice, and the other half is the emotion you put into it. If you can't act while you're singing, you're wasting everyone’s time. Over time, I was able to add a lot of
theatricality to the song.
Mary Helpers awarded at
NJ Thespian Festival! By Loretta Graceffo
Recently, 14 Mary Helpers competed in the NJ Thesbian Festival
against over 800 students from public and performing arts schools
alike. Three our seniors brought home awards recognizing their
amazing talent, and we are so proud of them! Samantha Chisholm
was awarded best single monologue, Miranda Almanzar and
Samantha Chisholm won an award for duet acting, and Guiliana
Gentile won best musical theatre solo. They will be continuing to
the next stage of the competition in Nebraska later this year. I
talked to Guiliana Gentile about her victory and what the festival
was like. Here’s what she had to say!
How did you get interested in performing? What do you love about it?
Well, it’s funny you ask. In about fourth grade I started watching Glee, and I idolized Rachel Berry (yikes). My love sprung from there. I love singing and performing because it's a type of medium I use for self expression and stress relief. It's something I know I'm good at and can actually be confident in. I love acting because I admire the opportunity to be a com-pletely different person. You gain a lot of insight
and different perspectives.

What else did you get to do at the competition besides perform?
I went to a bunch of really awesome workshops. I learned how to practice safe stage combat, staged sword fighting, musical theatre dancing, and improv. It was such a unique experience that I value so much. I also got an opportunity to watch a one
act play from Vernon High School. They performed “Twelve Angry Jurors,” and it was easily the greatest play I've ever seen.
What was your favorite part of the competition?
My favorite part of the competition was definitely the workshops. Because I am a senior, it was such a once in a lifetime opportu-
nity that I couldn't experience anywhere else. The festival was easily one of the most fun things I've ever done.

Last month, on the 12th of January, Mrs. Brunetti left this Earth to meet God. I wanted to
celebrate her life and remember all the good she has provided all of us here at
Mary Help, so I asked my fellow students for some of their favorite memories and
interactions they have had with Mrs. Brunetti. For many students, she was
more than a librarian- she was someone who constantly offered advice and her in-sight on anything and everything. She al-ways knew how to make people laugh, no matter how stressed out they were over a research paper. Mrs Brunetti will definitely
never be forgotten, and our library will always be her library.
In Loving Memory of Mrs. Brunetti
“She helped me with an essay, and it was really nice because she really put in effort to help me, when no one else did.”-
Aliah Colobong
“Working together to help my students do well on research papers and sometimes having distracted chats in the
process.” -Mrs. Kirt
By Briana San Diego
12
“During my freshman year, I had Mrs. Brunetti for my online Italian study period. I was having a little bit of trouble with
the program at first, and Mrs. Brunetti felt bad because I had no one to help me, since there wasn't a physical teacher. But
as I kept on having that Italian study, Mrs. Brunetti would surprise me with her newly-learnt Italian vocabulary. She
would say that she tried to learn some Italian to try and help me!”
- Gemma Fahy
“Ever since middle school she’s always called me Alondra.” -Juleisy Cabrera
“When she graded my research paper, and said it was brilliant. I was really grateful.”
-Alondra Brito
“When I first came here in seventh grade she was the most welcoming person and she always made the library feel like a home. Then my sophomore year, I went to a play based on a short story by Truman Capote and Mrs. Brunetti and her
husband were sitting in the seats right in front me. When she found out that I
had not read the short story, she printed it out for me over break and gave it to me when I
came back. I still have it, and I will treasure it forever.” -Loretta Graceffo

This month, Mary Help lost a beloved member
of our family and gained an angel in heaven.
Mrs. Brunetti will be deeply missed. She
taught us so much throughout the years. She
inspired within us a passion for learning and
knowledge, and she believed in each and
every one of us with all of her hearts. She was
truly devoted to her students at Mary Help.
I was blessed with the opportunity to attend her fu-
neral and celebrate her amazing life. While I was
there, a few members of her family approached us
and told us how much it meant to them that we
were there, and that Mrs. Brunetti had always spo-
ken lovingly of all of her students at Mary Help– so
much that in lieu of bringing flowers to the service,
her family asked that people make donations to our
school instead.
Remembering
Mrs. Brunetti
By Loretta Graceffo
14
Here at Mary Help, we have done
everything we can to honor all that Mrs.
Brunetti has brought to our lives. After we
heard the news of her passing, our school
held a prayer service. Though Mrs.
Brunetti’s loss was a painful one, it was
beautiful to be able to mourn and honor
her together as a school and as a family.
By the next day, the doors of the library were covered in notes of
prayer, gratitude and love towards Mrs. Brunetti, as well as pieces of
art commemorating all of the traits that made Mrs. Brunetti one of a
kind: her humor, her warmth, her intelligence, her wisdom, and her
incredible strength. The door was a moving testament to all that
Mrs. Brunetti has taught us and the extraordinary example she set
for us. Shortly after Mrs. Brunetti’s passing, Mrs. Evans and I were
talking about what Mrs. Brunetti meant to us, and Mrs. Evans said
something about Mrs. Brunetti that perfectly describes her legacy:
“Mrs. Brunetti always made me want to be a better person.”
I think it is safe to say that
Mrs. Brunetti had that effect
on everyone. Every single day,
she made not only Mary Help
but the world a better place to
be. We are all truly blessed to
have known her, and she will
not be forgotten. 15

Red shirts, scarves, and hats add to
the Valentine’s
Day feel! Red lipstick and
bronze eyeshadow are perfect for the season of love. It’s still winter, so boots of all kinds, with
skinny jeans and turtlenecks, are in fashion. In late February, the weather gets
slightly warmer, so jeans and colorful blouses are stylish. To go along with this almost- spring look, low heels and flats
work best with this outfit. Makeup and hair is natural, and lightweight scarves are al-ways needed to contribute to this fashion
trend.

Crystals’s Corner:
1) Prime your eyelids with an eyeshadow primer or concealer. This will help secure the shadows so you can slay all day!
2) Apply a warm brown in your crease and blend it upwards to
create a beautiful transition.
3) Now take a darker brown or black, and place that on your outer V. This will create definition in the eyes, and give you a
smokey look.
4) Then apply a glitter shadow of your choice. You will instantly have a glam eye to rock on a date, or a night out with the girls!
5) Lastly, highlight your inner corners and browbone. This will
finish off the eyeshadow.
6) To complete everything, apply mascara, lashes (optional), and eyeliner. You are all done, and it's time to slay the day!

Fun Facts About the Moon by Grace Lobascio The first human being walked on the moon
on 20 July 1969
There are two high tides and two low tides every day on every beach on Earth, due to
the moon's pull
Only 59% of the moon's surface is visible to us here on Earth
Our moon is the 5th largest moon in our solar system
It is 238,855 miles away from the Earth (30 Earths could fit in between)
Long ago the moon had active volcanoes, today they are all dor-mant
China and Vietnam have a festival each year to celebrate the moon
The moon has a thin atmosphere, no protection from the sun’s radiation or from meteoroids
Six American Flags are located on the moon
In 2009, an orbiting spacecraft discovered water molecules!
Sources: information from nasa.gov. The photograph of the moon
was taken by MHCA’s very own Alexis Keiser with her telescope!
In 1940, the Diana Project was the first experiment to successfully bounce radio signals from the moon
“Tigers are some of the most vital and beloved animals
on Earth. With our partners at
WWF, my Foundation has
supported major efforts to double
the number of tigers in the wild. I
am optimistic about what can be
achieved when governments, communities, conserva-
tionists and private foundations like ours come together
to tackle global challenges.”
-Leonardo DiCaprio
Tigers are one of the most majestic and recognizable animals on our planet, but their time here could be cut short. As of April 2016, there are only 3890 tigers left,
with 2226 located in India. The most immediate threat to the lives of tigers is
poaching. Every part of the tiger has relentless demands in the black market, sold to people who wish to use their bodies for folk remedies, traditional medicine, and even
as status symbols in some Asian cultures.

Climate change is also negatively impacting the lives of tigers. In the Sundarbans, a for-ested area on the northern coast of the Indian Ocean, rising sea levels are beginning to wipe out
pieces of this tiger habitat. Human interaction and habitat
loss are yet more issues that are threatening tigers. People continue to build the world up and clear out forests, causing tigers run out of space and
prey. As a result, they must resort to living in human towns and feed off of livestock. Many farmers will then hunt down and kill the tiger in revenge for eating their animals, and then the slain tiger ultimately ends up in
the black market. Smaller habitats then lead to higher risks of inbreeding and poaching.
However, not all hope is lost. You can lend your support through WWF and Leonardo DiCaprio's Save the
Tigers Now Campaign along with purchasing cruelty-free products and products with proceeds that go to helping tigers- or as always, you can create your
own way to show your support!

Saint of the Month
Saint Brigid of Ireland
By Isabel Condon
Born circa 450 A.D, Saint Bridgid seemed called to holiness from a young age. Legend states that she asked God to take away her beauty so that men wouldn’t pursue her, and she could stay pure and pursue a religious vocation. When she received a veil from Saint Mel, this beauty returned. Saint Bridgid founded the first convent in Ireland at Cil-Dara. She established many communities through-out Ireland, and her evangelization helped spread
the Catholic Church in Ireland. She aimed to help the poor, and she was a firm believer in sharing what she had. A friend once gave her a basket of apples as a gift, and Bridgid distributed them amongst the poor. Her response when her friend rebuked her was, “What’s mine is theirs.” She died circa 525 A.D. and was buried in the same tomb as Saint Patrick and Saint Columba. Praying to Saint Bridgid can help us to see the needs of others before ourselves.

Different ends of the earth fighting for the same things. Born from different mothers, but all equally as
strong. Standing strong against common enemies,
building bridges to lead the younger generations. Providing hope for sisters, daughters, mothers, grandmothers, and beyond.
Just because you're trying to tear us down, doesn't mean we’ll stay down.
Our voices will echo through the streets around the world for all to hear.
Our arms outstretched to the sky, calling upon a greater power. We will not be silenced. We will stand strong. We will rise beyond.

Review Corner!
Book Review: The Outsiders by S.E Hinton
Review by Adriana Viviani February is the time we celebrate love. When we think about love and Val-entine's Day, the first thing that pops into most of our heads is who we are dating, or who we want to be dating. Honestly, there is more to love- like
our families, friends, teachers, pets, and more. What I love the most (besides the people in my life) are books, whether they are new or old. I'm going to do a little throwback to a
book I will always love- “The Outsiders” by S.E. Hinton. This book contains all kinds of families, friendships, and relationships. The characters exemplify unconditional love- no matter what happens, everyone always sticks
together. I honestly believe if you read this book (which I recommend you do), you will fall in love with it. Happy
Valentine’s Day to my whole MHCA family!

Album Review: Ego Death by The Internet
Review by Angelica Jacobs
This album...this group... is...just amazing. Syd the Kid's soft voice on top of the different beats in this al-bum just sounds so smooth. Steve Lacy and his bass are one of the greatest things about this album. This
album features Janelle Monàe, Vic Mensa, KAY-TRANADA, and James Fauntleroy who are all also
amazing. This album and group are so underrated it's ridiculous. The Inter-net is not for everybody but even if you're not into funky, soft songs you
should still give Ego Death a chance! You should especially listen to this al-bum if you're feeling nostalgic about Odd Future since its demise about 2 years ago :( DONT MISS OUT ON GOOD MUSIC AND GO LISTEN TO
EGO DEATH NOW!
