A Word from Our President

Although we had to say goodbye to summer, I'm glad to start the school year to get back to service! I personally can't wait to serve our community alongside with you all. I really am looking forward to this year leading and serving our home club as we have an amazing group of individuals. You all should be proud of your hard work that you put into our community and school! I also am eager to get to know each and every one of you much better and meet new potential members at Club Rush in October!

I joined Key Club in my Freshman year. Ever since, I've been a dedicated and loyal member up till this year. It's a sad feeling to know that this'll be my last year being a Key Clubber but I can't wait to make the best of it. Thank you all for being an amazing club to serve! Let's all work together make this year the best year Pacifica's Key Club has ever had!

Sincerely, Chris Pile Club President

Let’s have a GOLDEN

year, otters!

From the Eyes of an Otter

3 August/September 2013

With the sun beaming down and the temperature rising up to around 90 degrees, many Key Club members still went out to DCM at Downtown Disney. At this DCM, it was a bit special, as it was a combined DCM with Division 4 West. At the meeting, Tommy was announcing the awards for member of the month, club of the month, and officer of the month. To my surprise, my home school Pacifica swept the field and claimed all the

awards. It made me proud of my school, as it was our first award as Club of the Month and member, especially because not many of my school’s members come out to services or DCMs. As always we have our spirit stick cheer battle, once again my school group was small. However that didn’t discouraged my school, we cheered our hearts out even though we had a feeling we weren’t going to get pass the first round. So we made our cheer funny to entertain our fellow Key Club members from the other school. But somehow we made it to the second round and took 2nd place, winning the “you-tried”stick. Even though it was a hot day, I had fun doing the scavenger hunt with D4W with the teams consisted of members from both divisions.

(Top) Brandon Hong talks with our buddy club Los Amigos about what we accomplished together.

Being a new cabinet member of Pacifica High School Key Club, I look forward to serving this term with my fellow otters. One of my goals for our club this year is to get more members into the club and more excited and motivated volunteers at each of our services and DCM’s. Last year we lacked in numbers which made a part of Key Club look very weak and dull, but this year hopefully we will be able to come up with new ideas to attract eager members. People joining the club to me are the most important thing because without club

members there might as well be no club. In addition to more otters, I hope to see Pacifica’s Key Club remains on track to being successful because not too long ago we lost contact with our Kiwani’s and people stopped caring about Key Club. But hopefully our new board members will be enthusiastic and put all their effort into making it a wonderful club again. Only then will Pacifica’s Key Club see a bright future full of members and excitement.

As President of Key Club, I’m proudly looking forward to this year to serve not only my home, school, and community, but to serve you. I take my position with high honor as I get to lead my home club and serve an amazing group of individuals. Working hard to improve our club is an overwhelming job for not only me, but the rest of the cabinet. Considering all the time and effort I put in for the club, everything that I’ve done has been worth it. It is a very heartwarming feeling to know that our members appreciate all our work. I’m just really excited to have so many countless opportunities to volunteer and work together with some of the best individuals I have encountered in my life so far. In the end,

I’m looking forward to this upcoming year to serve alongside my members to make a difference in our home, school, and community, and possibly, the world.

With a new school year come new expectations and goals to work towards. Here at Key, we too have many things we seek to accomplish. Some of our Key Club cabinet members share their own goals for our club.

A GOLDEN Opportunity

District Projects

Just a little bit can go such a long way. Often times we overlook the value of pocket change. “It’s just a few cents,” we think, as we toss our coins off to a side. However, when saving lives, it makes all the difference. Just take Project Eliminate as an example. This October, partnered with UNICEF, Key Club will be collecting loose change in Trick or Treat boxes to go towards eliminating maternal and neonatal tetanus from the world. 33 countries have already been ridded of the disease, and recently Sierra Leone and Gabon have also experienced the elimination of MNT from their countries! However, there are still many countries in need of remedy from this disease.

Don’t Be Afraid of a Little Change!

This is where we, as members of Key Club International, come in. It is part of our duty to aid in ridding these countries in need of such a fatal disease. If we could all participate in trick or treating for UNICEF this Halloween, we make a significant difference in the fight against MNT. Even just a few cents collected can save at least one life. That’s one more person in this world who will be able to live a longer, healthier life. So let’s do our part. Look out for the orange boxes this October and support Project Eliminate!

OC Children’s Book Festival Children and adults alike can enjoy in the annual OC Children’s Book Festival held at Orange Coast College. Into its 10th year now, the festival features many children’s book vendors of all sorts, as well as craft stations, a train ride, and many more! Reading is definitely made fun at this event, and as volunteers we will help set up and work at booths to make the magic happen. Let’s all work hard to bring a smile on those kids’ faces!

Light The Night Walk

The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society arrange this walk to help fundraise for many lifesaving cancer researches, financial aid to help patients pay for medical expenses, and so much more. On average, each participant in the walk raises $220 for the fight against cancer! And with this money, the organization makes cures happen. So as a division, we will participate in the walk and support the cause! One step at a time, we can help fight for a cure together.

If you refer to our calendar on page 9, you can see that this month we will begin to have more services after a break this summer. Some of you may ask though, exactly how are we serving our community? Here’s how:

Marinotter of the Month

Drexler Kim Grade: Junior Member since: Freshman Year Why he’s our Marinotter of the Month: Drexler is always an active member. Even outside of services and meetings, he asks about how Key Club is doing. He is a regular attendee of both services and social events for Key and definitely exemplifies otter spirit while at an event. You can always rely on Drexler to participate. Finally, he’s always reliable when we need something for our club, and a good Marinotter should always be responsible!

Drexler relates his Key Club experience to playing clarinet for our school marching band: “I’ve been playing clarinet for coming to about 7 years now. I’ve had a lot of fun with it and I really do regret the times I decided not to do band like 7th grade and freshman year. It is a really fun experience, like Key Club, where we all come together for a common purpose.”

An-otter Look

Welcome to a new year, otters! I’ve always loved beginnings. For me, it meant opportunity, chances for growth, self-

improvement, and learning. Not learning in an academic sense either, just discovering many aspects about life not considered before.

Ever since I became you Tech Editor, I feel like I have been given so many new beginnings, so many new opportunities to improve upon myself as an officer of a club I so love and am passionate about. This is why I am excited about this new school year. Yes, I do hate waking up early and sitting in class when I can be at home sleeping. Doesn’t’ everybody? But if this is what I need for a chance to improve more, then so be it.

So this year, I hope all of you take this new beginning as an opportunity to become more active contributors to our community. There are so many opportunities to help better the world around us that lie ahead for you to seize. The question is, will you take it? Keep that in mind, everyone, along with everything else that we have to think about during school. Grades, maybe sports, social life…. there is a LOT to keep track of, but always leave room in your mind for thinking about how you can make an impact. Key Club will always be here to help you accomplish that.

Take care, Marinotters, and have a great new schoolyear!
