Last Monday afternoon the College community gathered in the area at the front of the Science Wing for a very special tribute to Mons Toms. In his 50 years as a priest Mons has also been a teacher of Chemistry and Physics for many years and he has always held a strong passion for the Sciences. So, when we began thinking about how we might acknowledge Mons Toms’ milestone, it didn’t take long to reach the decision to name St Mary’s College Science Wing in his honour. As the ceremony began, we all gathered around Mons and it became apparent that he was quite overwhelmed by the occasion. He had absolutely no idea that we were about to bestow such an honour on him… and for the very first time he was speechless! The pictures below feature two parts to our presentation. One is the naming on the building and the other is a plaque commemorating his 50 years as a priest and his passion for education. This week the focus for the Confirmation candidates has been the Rite of Enrolment Mass. The Rite of Enrolment Mass was held yesterday and marked a very special occasion when the candidates were presented to the parish community. The Mass brought together the children, their families, their classmates, the staff and members of the parish who all share in their preparation for the sacrament. It is hoped that this liturgy will encourage the candidates to make a commitment to personal prayer, to community prayer by attending Mass, to take seriously all the preparation for Confirmation, at school, in the parish and at home and finally to do their best to be the kind of person that Jesus would want them to be. We also invite their parents and guardians to continue to be a witness to this commitment and to promise to help and encourage their child in their endeavours.

Did you receive your letter explaining the recent uniform change? Briefly, due to safety reasons, the girls’ t-bar shoes are no longer considered safe to wear, especially in some Creative Arts subjects. Please contact the College if you have not received a letter explaining the uniform change. Last week’s Marian also featured an explanation of the change.

PPPParkingarkingarkingarking – An important reminder that all parents and carers need to ensure that all students (Prep – 4) who access the school from the parish car park must do so in the company of an older student and or adult. Big cars don’t always see little kids!! Please note: You may choose to park on the church side which will allow your child to get out of the car and walk into school through the church yard.

Bikes/Scooters/SkateboardsBikes/Scooters/SkateboardsBikes/Scooters/SkateboardsBikes/Scooters/Skateboards – Student who arrive at/leave school by bike, scooter or skateboard must walk to the school exit before riding them. For the safety of all, this rule applies to toddlers and adults too! Bikes and scooters are to be left in the rack near the canteen.

Hooley dooley, what freezing cold mornings! Most of the days have been fresh with a blend of chill and sunshine. The mornings have been a competition at my house of who can guess the right temperature. I am not a very good judge apparently!

The weather provides me with an opportunity to remind parents that winter coats are available from Kerris’ Mensland. I know the children who wear their coat are grateful for the added warmth.

Last Wednesday I had the pleasure of speaking with the many parents who were able to be present at an informal chat about the JP-S & JP-C Morning Reading Program. Since beginning the program this year, the take up we have seen in students’ reading has been impressive. We all know that reading every night can sometimes be a struggle, but with the large number of parents who filter through our rooms in the

mornings, all children are heard reading. This program has several benefits – reading regularly, being heard by various people, building confidence and self-esteem. These are all positive contributors to every student seeing themselves as a reader and a learner, regardless of their ability. Thank you parents. Your contribution will have a long and positive impact on all the students of our classrooms. We have already this term had a large number of children absent with illness. Thank you for texting us or ringing the school to let us know. It is important to recognise if your child is unwell. This can be the difference between one day away and an entire week. In Middle Primary we have continued to discuss and investigate our Inquiry question, ‘What changes our world?’. Students have looked at differences between weathering and erosion and how a rise in temperature could drastically change the way that we live today.

All this investigation about our world will be invaluable on our camp which is creeping closer and closer. Today, parent interest letters went home with each student. If you are interested in coming on the camp to Phillip Island (10th -12th September) please return the parent helper expression of interest by Tuesday the 12th of August.

Our students are getting very excited about the Oz Opera performers visiting next Monday 11th August! The play this year is an interpretation of the fairytale ‘Cinderella’. JP-P & JP-S are thrilled as this is in line with their current Literacy theme of fairytales. Thanks Mrs Hogan for organising the incursion. JP students are busily improving their skills in athletics events. Last week was spent practising relays and this week, while the sun is out, we will be skilling up on hurdles and shot put. Remember our Athletics DayAthletics DayAthletics DayAthletics Day is Thursday 18th SeptemberThursday 18th SeptemberThursday 18th SeptemberThursday 18th September. We look forward to a great crowd to cheer on our athletic marvels!

JP-C and JP-L have started to read and write poems. We are focussing on 'alliteration' where sentences will have a repetition of a sound at the beginning of words. Here are some of our alliteration poems. Blake was beneath the bridge in Ballarat. BlakeBlakeBlakeBlake

Mental Maths in JP-P & JP-S looked a little different today. SP-K and Mrs Evans came with games they had made over the past week to share with the juniors. Each game needed to be explained and had varying levels of difficulty. Positive responses came from all the children involved. Thank you Mrs Evans & SP-K. We look forward to seeing you next term. We thank you for your support with this. Our students are wearing their uniform with greater pride and we continue to encourage you to ensure they are in the correct attire as outlined in their student planner. This includes the correct coloured socks and correct school shoes. Thank you for your support in this matter.

SP Hoop Time Wrap-Up:

On Friday the 18th of July, Senior Primary headed to Seymour Stadium for the Hoop time

event. As we arrived at the stadium all the SP’s were excited and ready to play. The first

game started and every one was pumped up and eager to win. As the day went on we

reached the finals. The Future Stars were playing. It was an exciting game with a double

overtime penalty shootout. The team played exceptionally well with Jackson shooting the

winning goal to make it through to the grand final, where the St Mary’s Meteors broke

through to win the game by 4 points. By Tyler, Ben, Bella and Ally.

There were several workshops offered during the morning by Electronic Engineers from the Department of Electronic Engineering, La Trobe University, Bundoora. The keynote speaker led the students through a series of questions such as ‘Why would I want to be an engineer? ’What is the engineering profession all about?’ ‘What skills or interests do I need for a career in engineering?’ Our students attended and participated in workshops in Crash Testing and Mechatronics led by Automotive Crash Engineers in which they had to assemble cars to be crashed to measure the G Forces. The lower the G Force the safer the car! Don’t panic these cars were matchbox model sizes not the real thing!!!!! The second workshop was focused on Biomedical Engineering with Boimetric measurement of athletes measuring Heart Rate Recovery Times and the students were all wired up to perform some exercises. Student ReviewStudent ReviewStudent ReviewStudent Review On a Wednesday I go to Tafe in Seymour and do a Certificate Two in Hairdressing. We do some theory and a lot of practical work. I have learnt how to blow wave hair using all the brushes, wash hair and consult clients. It is fun but it is a lot of hard work and sometimes stressful. It is worth it if you want to become a hairdresser though. Whitney WrightWhitney WrightWhitney WrightWhitney Wright Hello, I’m Stephanie Elliott. This year I’m studying Allied Health Assistance. This course is held at GO-TAFE Seymour. It is a two year course with the outcome of Certificate II and III in Allied Health Assistance. I catch my normal school bus to school and then walk to GO TAFE. I attend Tafe every second week and work at Barrabill on the alternate Wednesdays. We are required to do a lot of written work including taking lots and lots of notes from slide shows. We study all the systems of the body - a different system every 2nd week. On the practical side of things, we have done many dissections on the system or body part we have studied. I have also learned how to make a bed when someone is in the bed and when it’s empty. I have also learned the correct way to move patients. I am required to do 40 hours of work placement and a full week of placement during the holidays. I plan to continue this course in 2015. We are working hard to build an eSmart community at St Mary’s College. This week in Creative Arts, Years 5 - 7 students studying ICT have looked at the concept of Digital Citizenship. Digital Citizenship is the idea that students have a responsibility when using technology to think ethically and critically around their online presence. All students Year 5 and above at St Mary’s College are expected to have discussed with their parents and signed the ICT ICT ICT ICT Acceptable Use AgreementAcceptable Use AgreementAcceptable Use AgreementAcceptable Use Agreement in their planners. Students are asked to regularly refer to this document that outlines expected behavior when using digital technologies. The Australian and Media Communications Authority also have a website at http://www.cybersmart.gov.au that features a number of eSmart resources which may help parents of younger students to discuss cyber safety in a practical way.

The B4W program got off to a flying start this term with a trip to the Old Melbourne Gaol and the Magistrates Court. Designed to support our studies in Humanities, students participated in a court re-enactment and completed a tour of the Old Melbourne Gaol.

Week three saw our students climb and conquer Mt Piper, near Broadford. Having first been briefed on its geological and Aboriginal history, students enthusiastically embraced the sometimes difficult hike, to reach the summit in record time. Students have also worked on Careers and Year Long Projects. A highlight of Week 2 was the viewing of the ACMI videos made in first semester. We have much more to look forward to this term, including Study Skills, RE and Billycarts in week 4, Survival Skills in the Tallarook Ranges in week 5 and Team Building and Strategic Thinking at Laser Tag in week 7.
