THE MARGIN & THE MARGINAL
MARGIN: the edge, the border, the line that distinguishes the center from the periphery.
The margin is at the edge. It structures space, activities, and the people who participate. In design, the site, the materials, and the program are all im-portant elements of architecture, but where does architecture end? Does it end at the margin? Who and what decide where the margin lies? What about the spaces between the margins? Who is held responsible for the remnants?
MARGINAL: situated at the edge, the periphery.
This thesis explores the beauty of marginal space in the urban environment. Mar-ginal space is on the edge of architecture, between program, without certain-ty, indifferent to the preoccupied urban mind. Without us realizing, our expe-rience is shaped by it. It can be both hidden and revealed, and often wavers in between. It ’s constantly on the verge of change, overlapping narratives, and pre-senting moments of ambiguous function and questionable beauty. This state of obscurity provokes shifting narratives of spatial appropriation and incites curi-osity of ownership and authorship as it questions the limitations of institutions.

THE MARGINAL & APPROPRIATION
The marginal space that accounts for what I call breathing room, accounts for pub-lic and private land that sits in between properties where the sense of ownership is lost, and in some cases causes the space to be under-utilized all together. However, in urban environments these spaces may take on different uses depending on need. The beauty lies in its ability to constantly transform and take on the most appropri-ate shape for the situation. In looking at spatial appropriation as it occured in public and private spaces, some cases allow for appropriation that caters to adjacent pro-grams, as an extension of the margin, while others were programmatically distant.
In my experience walking through my neighborhood, the marginal space I chose as my site exposed itself in the form of an open and visible space near the Ash-by Avenue and Sacramento Street intersection in South Berkeley, loosely for-malized by the boundaries of the public sidewalk and abandoned architecture.
The site is not just a marginal space. It onced serviced cars for the liquor store that occu-pied the building over 50 years ago, it ’s been fenced on all sides, which served as an in-vitation for illegal dumping, and it’s currently the home of an unknown memorial, and by default been subject to neglect. The multi-threaded narratives embedded in the space are ones of abandonment, impudence and disregard, to reclamation and remembrance.

THE MARGINAL SPACE
I viewed this as a site to experiment with improvisation and appropria-tion to bring the marginal space to life. To do this, I was driven by the site’s lay-ered pasts to design an installation that overlaps these narratives by defining the space with objects disregarded from the surrounding neighborhood. By painting and tethering the objects, they are established, and establish the space in a new light with this ambiguous narrative that may read art, or it may read yard sale.

Regardless of the interpretation, the project engages in a collaboration with urban partici-pants that never reaches a state of completion. As the installation itself changes as people regard and disregard it, move, and remove elements of the margin that define the space.
As people moved and removed objects, the string tethering them to the building en-couraged a range of motion and provided a trace of the objects original position.
The objects were painted red to play on two things: the history of the site, which was a part of a community that was subject to redlining, restricting the mobility of blacks to other neighborhoods. And as a graphic color of change in architectural representation.

Each of the objects used for the installation were found on or around the mar-ginal space. Throughout the duration of the project, I documented the location of each found object, including the day and time, and well as drew and measured them. These drawings attempt to tell the story of the objects in relation to the proj-ect regarding their orgin, their role in the project, and the eventual disposal. The condition of the objects ranged from useful to completely unrecognizable. During the installation, the objects remained in whatever state I intially found them in.
