Oh I FEE
L so GOO
D! What’s happening KEY CLUBBERS?!
I’m so stoked for the CANADIAN RALLY and I hope you are too!
It’s happening in less than ONE WEEK on Thursday Aug 16th from
10AM-4PM at UBC. I encourage everyone one of you reading to at-
tend. It’s a day filled with awesome forums, food, icebreakers, and
key club fun. To register, fill out pages 5 and 7 completely, bring $7
and hand it in at the door. Turn to page 7 for the rally package link! I
hope to see everyone there! :)
With summer soon coming to an end, it’s time to brace our-
selves for those bittersweet first days of school. AKA time to recruit
those awkward grade 8’s into Key Club and give them some Key
Club L-O-V-E! At the August DCM I will be going over battle plans for
more efficient membership recruitment, so you don’t want to miss
out! The Aug DCM date will be out shortly, sorry for the anticipation!
Just a bit longer! :)
So make the most out of summer 2012 by planning for the Key
Club school year! Don’t forget to soak up some of that lovely sun and
continue to volunteer as always! See you all VERY SOON. NEXT WEEK!
In service and friendship,
Jennifer Zhen

ICON 2012
This years’ International Convention took place
in Orlando Florida from July 4th-7th. It was an eye
-opening experience due to the extremely spirited atmosphere and being able to meet over 1700 Key
Clubbers from Jamaica, Caribbean-Atlantic, Eastern Canada, and all over the world. The first night was
my favourite moment of ICON; it was meet and greet aka pin trading time. There I had the chance to talk
to many Key Clubbers about their favourite service projects and icebreakers in order to implement and
grow our division. From the famous Service Fair to the ‘Whatever Floats Your Boat Workshop’ I always had
a great time both learning and interacting with Key Clubbers and almost didn’t want ICON 2012 to end.
However before we know it, ICON2013 will soon come and guess what?! It will be held in Washington, DC
next year and I can’t wait to see you all there!

Goals for 2012–13: In my final year in Key, I have only one overarching goal
– and it can be summed up in only one word: opportunity. What members
don’t realize is that every single person has the ability to make a differ-
ence. Even just one person’s initiative can spark a flame of generosity and
ingenuity. Therefore, as International Trustee, I look to equip our members
even more accessible means to elevate club leadership, excellence, and
recognition.

#ELIMIN8 In 34 countries around the world, maternal and neona-
tal tetanus (MNT) can quickly turn the joy of childbirth
into tragedy. MNT kills one baby every nine minutes. Its
effects are excruciating — tiny newborns suffer repeat-
ed, painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light
and touch. There is little hope of survival. And tetanus
kills mothers too.
$1.80 WILL SAVE A MOTHER AND HER FUTURE BABIES
Let’s find the cure to children’s Cancer!
PNW’s Officially Supported Project—KCCP What: Kiwanis Children’s Cancer Program When: Now – The Cure Who: Kiwanis, Circle K, Key Club, and YOU! How: Fundraise as much as you can! Educate yourself and others!
KCCP Background The Kiwanis Children’s Cancer Program was first established by Kiwanis District Governor Frank Morehouse in the memory of a 10 year old girl, Penny, who died of brain cancer in 1964. The main goal for KCCP is to raise money for cancer research and this will continue until the cure for Children’s Cancer is found. Last year this was our District Project, however now it is no longer the main dis-trict focus. Instead we are continuing to support this project so together...

Well in the month of July, people have been busy going on vacation and going through summer school, and to be quite
honest, it has been a very slow month. But that does not mean we did not accomplish anything. To start off with, on Cana-
da Day, a group of the Pinetree Key Club members went to the Canada Day festival at Lafarge Lake to help with the Green
Team Ambassadors, which took care of the garbage, recycling, and other things regarding waste. It was not an easy task
but we sure did enjoy our time and the mood of festivities. We have also gone down to the Eagle Ridge Hospital to help
with the car wash they held in order to raise money for the Manor! This was pure volunteer work and we did not profit in
any way except for having fun and cooling down from the sun. Lastly, we again went over to the Eagle Ridge Hospital, but
this time to give them a cheque of around $270. This money was raised by a flower sale held there for mother's day in April,
and the $270 came from the 25% our club raised.

VanTech This month has been a quiet one for Van Tech Key Club. The club held
a picnic at Rupert Park and we also volunteered for the Greater Cana-
dian Food Bank. It wasn't easy work as we literally had to jump into the
card box and rebox carrots! We had lots of fun interacting with mem-
bers and a better understanding in the procedure that takes place be-
fore being handed to those in need. Other members got to repack-
age sanitary pads as well as diapers. Did you know we had to throw
away the top layers of the diapers and sanitary pads if the bag is
opened? It might be contaminated and with the Food Bank, safety is
an important concern. Coming up next month we will be volunteering
for the MS Ride event as well as the JDRF walk! Who says Key Club
ends as school ends?

However, we have another more amazing opportunity that in-
cludes watching a Jason Mraz concert for free!! That would be
volunteering for his concert!! WHOO :) If anyone is interested, the
details are on the Killarney key Club page. We suggest you hurry,
because well, who in Vancouver doesnt want to see Jason Mraz
for free and receive a free t shirt right? :) It will be on Friday, Sep-
tember 21 at Rogers Arena. Good luck everyone.
Pinetree
For the past few months, we've been talking about it- but now we've finally done
it: volunteer at the Kiwanis Summer Tea Party. We've had a wonderful blend of
grade 8s and grade 11s who attended. We served trays of sandwiches, fruits and
little desserts to the elderly and participated in their styles of entertainment. Our
brave bulletin editor was featured on the dance floor-gangnam style- where he
stole the attention of a North Vancouver Kiwanian, Gertie. It was a truly magnifi-
cent experience and every had the utmost fun. Sharen and the club would like
to extend a big and warm thank you to everyone who participated. Our kiwani-
an, Sharen McRae, was so impressed she has invited us all to her board meeting
on August 25 and to the Christmas Tea Party already. :)

BoMS
So what does BoMS stand for? The acronym BoMS stands
for Board of Magical Surprise. This board creates a little
friendly competition between the clubs in the wonderful
division of 13/15/17. As well, prizes are awarded when
clubs have reached a certain # of points!
Clubs can easily earn points through certain tasks such as
handing in monthly reports on time, attending DCMs, etc.
The more active members that are in your club, the more
points you’ll get!
In the end, TWO clubs (1 established club and 1 new club)
that gets the most points will be receiving a magical sur-
prise. GOOD LUCK!
