TECHNOLOGY AND PRIVACY
With technology advancing more and more
every day, so does the risk of violating
privacy for residents in nursing facilities
across the nation. At the Manning Plaza
we respectfully request that you never use
your camera or cell phone to take pictures
or videos of a resident(s) unless that
resident and/or their responsible party give
consent first. Along with getting consent to
take pictures or videos, consent is also
required prior to posting anything on social
MEDICAID REMINDERS
If you or your loved one is a Medicaid recipient there are certain responsibilities that are
required of you by the Iowa Department of Human Services. They include such things as
filling out a Medicaid Review form each year, providing information and proof when
required, as well as notifying DHS of any changes that may affect eligibility. Specifically, we
would like to remind all of you to contact DHS Centralized Facility Eligibility Unit in Council
Bluffs whenever there is a change in income that would affect the client participation that is
paid to the Plaza each month. Examples would include such things as:
Change in supplement insurance premium
Change in social security benefits
Inheritance or other income changes
The Centralized Office can be reached by calling 877-344-9628 or you may have a specific
case worker that you communicate with. If you have had any correspondence with DHS,
please look at the bottom of the mailing and there should be the name and contact information
for your specific case worker. It is imperative that these changes be made as soon as possible
to maintain Medicaid coverage, and accurate billing to the responsible parties and the State of
Iowa. If you have questions concerning your monthly statement, please feel free to contact
Laurie Bruch at 712-655-8152. If you have questions regarding your Medicaid coverage,
please contact me at 712-655-8158.

media outlets, such as facebook or
snapchat. As you are taking photos/videos,
we also ask that you be mindful of any
residents who might be in the background,
assuring that no one else is in the picture. It
is imperative that we protect our residents,
family and visitors from violating any
privacy rules that could potentially result in
an unfavorable outcome. If you have
additional questions about this requirement
please feel free to ask.

It’s hard to believe, but the holidays will be
upon us soon. As you begin to think about
possible gift ideas, here are a few thoughts and
suggestions that might help. Of course sharing
the gift of time with family and/or friends at
the Plaza is one of the best gifts you can give.
Visits are cherished moments and mean so
much to the residents. If you are uneasy about
visiting a friend or loved one at the Plaza, or
even if you visit frequently, here is a tip to help
the conversations run smoothly and brighten
the day for both of you. Bring something with
you to talk about. The resident will relish and
reflect over old photos, a purse filled with
“stuff”, a gift pertaining to their greatness like
jewelry, fishing lures, perfume, favorite food or
a farmer’s hat.
A few other gift ideas might include stationary,
all occasion greeting cards, stamps and writing
supplies for those who are capable of writing
out cards and letters. You could also include an
address book with the names and addresses of
family and friends. A photo album, digital
picture frame or scrapbook filled with valuable
memories is priceless or a DVD player and
their favorite movie(s). This kind of gift can be
appreciated and enjoyed again and again.
Many residents are on a very fixed income that
limits their ability to enjoy some of life’s little
pleasures. Gift certificates make wonderful
gifts and allow the resident to enjoy special
times without the financial worry. Some
suggestions include gift certificates for the
beauty or barber shop, or how about a gift
certificate to the Snack Bar, Cliff’s or Deb’s
Corner Café if they enjoy the Dutch treat
outings.
SOCIAL SERVICES
Welcome:
Loretta Handlos and Orland Fara,
We hope you enjoy your stay!!
Consider making a gift baskets filled with
useful items the resident would enjoy such as a
magazine subscription, large print books or
word search puzzles, a magnifying glass,
favorite perfume or cologne, non-slip socks, or
hand lotion. If your loved one does not have
any dietary restrictions, include their favorite
foods, candies or home cooked treats.
These are just a few ideas to get everyone
thinking. If you have any questions or would
like additional ideas for a certain resident,
please feel free to contact me. We look forward
to sharing the upcoming holidays with many of
you and remember that our door is always open
and the coffee is always on!

Things to Considered Before Taking Your Loved One Out.
As we approach the holiday season many families are faced with the sometimes difficult question of
whether to bring their loved one home for a visit. Many caregivers would love to bring their elderly
loved one home for a few hours, or even overnight. But when is it a good idea, and when are you better
off just visiting at the nursing home?
Every situation is a little different, so it is important to look at every angle. Do you have adequate
transportation to accommodate a wheelchair or mobility concerns, is your home environment accessible
or are there health concerns including Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia that could influence a
successful visit? These are just a few of the concerns that you need to be aware of including
incontinence care and your ability to comfortably provide this kind of intimate care. If your loved one
has these or other needs that you can’t confidently meet at home, taking them out of the nursing home is
not in their best interest.
Taking a trip outside of the facility can be physically and mentally exhausting for some elderly. It is
important to look at the health of your loved one. There are times when a trip outside of the nursing
home can set a frail elderly person back for days or even weeks. If this is the case with your loved one,
the joy of a family visit can be offset by the serious toll it can take on your loved ones health.
Something else to consider is if your loved one will be devastated when it is time to return to the
nursing home. Every nursing home resident adjusts to their new living situation differently. Some are
very accepting and have no problem understanding their need to be in a nursing home and others never
seem to adjust. In many of these cases there is some form of dementia as well that interferes with their
ability to understand the need to return to the facility. When the trauma of returning to the nursing
home is worse than the pleasure of a home visit, it is best to forgo the visit.
For those residents and families faced with Alzheimer’s or dementia there are many things to consider
before taking your loved one outside the facility. Many times with a change of environment, large
crowds or lots of noise, there will be increased confusion, anxiety and possible agitation with behaviors.
If your loved one has a dementing illness and has adjusted to where they are living, you may want to
consider coming to the nursing home for a visit rather than taking them out of their familiar
surroundings.
We encourage our families to take their loved ones out whenever possible; however it is important to
evaluate each situation before a commitment is made. It is also important to visit with the nurses prior
to any visit to make sure there aren’t any medical concerns, to get a physician’s order for an overnight
stay if necessary, and to allow time to get medication, supplies, etc. ready prior to leaving the facility.
If you feel like it is not in the best interest of your loved one to leave the nursing home, we welcome
families and friends to stop by any time. We do have a large meeting room that is available for families
to check out for larger gatherings, as well as the lobby, dining room and center street lounge for smaller
groups. To check out the meeting room, you can contact me or DeEtte Grabill, Activity Director. If
you have any questions or concerns about an upcoming visit or outing, please feel free to contact me at
712-655-8158 or one of our nurses at 712-655-8125.
