Easy way to shoot would be June/July when the Milky Way rises in the East, and will be above the tree when shooting from the shor.



Ideal shot would have been to aim directly West, however this meant deeper water, and colder appendages.



Best option for this night was to have the tree composed at the Northern tip of the Milky Way.



TIME TO GET WET



SETUP 1: TIMELAPSE

Canon 600D running Magic LanternSamyang 14mm 2.8 lensTripodHand warmers

Settings: 20 seconds, 3200 ISO at 2.8, every 25 seconds.

SETUP 2: PANORAMAS AND OTHER SHOTS

Canon 6D running Magic LanternSamyang 24mm 1.4 lensTripodDew heater + battery pack

Waders essential, its going to get cold and slightly damp.

Settings: 20 seconds, 10,000 ISO at 3.5, multiple setups

so enter it manually.

FINE TUNING



Open the TIF file in Photoshop (or similar), crop out the details you dont need.

Keep this unticked



Brightness/Contrast adjustment layer, masked just for the lower third.



Another Brightness/Contrast adjustment layer, masked for the sky.



And one more Brightness/Contrast adjustment layer, for the whole image.



Import PSD file into LR

Fine tune overall image



Graduated filters

Add more magenta to the sky

Lift the shadows more in the foreground



Adjustment Brush edits galactic bulge too bright



Adjustment Brush edits bring out more details
