PROBLEM STATEMENTThailand has been well-known for its craftsmanship since predecessor period. Craftsmanship artists created their pieces of work in different objectives, for royal or local purpose. In the folk crafts, different areas have their own skill and identity in order to create their art-pieces accord-ing to resources they had. Those folk craftsmen were scat-tered entirely seventy-seven provinces all over the country. Their profiles also never been collected into the database. Therefore, the Department of Cultural Promotion under the Ministry of Culture of Thailand is trying to gather those data altogether. So this is my opportunity to make them the interactive website to display this database, acknowl-edge people about thai folk craft and also make an afford for consumers to reach them easily.

PROPOSAL

SCOPEThe project is aim to make the interactive website to let users able to explore Thai folk craftsmanship. Users will learn the fundamental knowledge of each crafts-manship through images and videos. Moreover, users also able to find location of each artists in the country upon their criterions.

USERSTargeted users can be everyone who interesting in thai folk craftsmanship. Both foreigner and thai people are able to view the website as its contents are available in both English and Thai language. Moreover, the web-site will be helpful to whom looking for the location of specific craftsmanship skill.

DELIVERABLESAn interactive website containing contents about thai folk craftsmanship which divided into ten categories. However, in this project, it will show two, or more, categories in complete operation. The content will be bilingual (English and Thai). Also, A blog containing the research for the project and the procedure of the project which will be updated along implementing the project.

OBJECTIVEStudying in the digital media field specialized in Interactive Design, made me engage myself into the usability and user-experience design interface. There are plenty of website in the network which some concerned about this but some did not. Especially website in Thailand, my birthplace, an awareness in user-friendly design is still lack of interest. Thus, in my thesis project, I would like to use thai content to make the interactive website using theory I have learned from the program.

VISION STATEMENTThe main objective in this purposed website is to acknowledge and provide database information of thai folk craftsmanship in interactive way. Users are allowed to explore and access the database of various folk craftsmen upon their interests.

CONTENTThe website mainly contains the database of Thai crafts-manship. The data has been surveyed by Department of Cultural Promotion under the Ministry of Culture, Thailand.The data has been collected in Thai languages, that means in making of English version, the specific vocabularies have to translate and will be further approved by the committee in the hereafter. Somehow, in English version will demon-state all the functions within the sites for thesis project purpose.

The website will contain content according to the data surveyed which classified Thai craftsmanship into nine categories using material criteria as beside.

This sketch also shows how the database will display (fig5), light-box has been use in this case. Somehow, it’s not the answer while there are lots of data to display. The better way to solve this problem is to put it in the page, which will be shown in Visual Comp section.

VISUAL COMPSettling down the visual interface from the third sketch, in the visual comp, there are some twist from the sketch in order to add more usability to the website. Not only how the database result shown, but also some layout in the lookup section.

FILTER ICON

Changing the traditional way of filter seaching by letting these icon act like a checkbox. Users can click the little icon

to fiter the database, add more visual to the search engine.

HOMEPAGE

Once landed the site, users are able to click the menu both picture menu and top navigation. On the top right corner, there are links for change a language and jump over to the database page.

INFORMATION PANEL

This panel will explain useful knowl-edge about that category. Using jQuery, users can slide the panel by the button set on the bottom-right corner. The button ‘Go to database’ will bring user to database section.

DATABASE LOOKUP

In the searching, users are allowed to search with keyword and screen the results with filters, categories and regions.

Database results is another challenge in order to get tids of the table, I came up with the grid layout which has enough space to display example picture of workpiece, create an instant previewing.

DISPLAY DATABASE

The database will be display within the page. The data included pictures and map will be placed in the read-able position. Along with the data shown, the icon of category and region will display as well.

The details field, which can be stretch down, supports a lot of data that we can put them in. This make more sense than using Lightbox as in the sketch.

SUMMARYWithin three months creating this project makes me learn lots of things, for instance, how to deal with database, information architecture, designing skill, and also HTML, CSS, jQuery coding. As my expectation to make the pro-ject as concrete as I can in order to be useful for those who interest in Thai folk craftsmanship in the future.

I tried to define the best way to make users browse the database efficeintly, make it most usability, using visuali-zation as my major in interactive design. Some features in the website still need further maintenance with more advance coding skill. This project is also continuing de-velop into thai language, however, the preview version is now available at : http://www.thaifolkcrafts.com
