Once again this year, Thomas Mills’ very own Men of Movember stepped up and grew moustaches.Movember is not only about growing a moustache. It’s what growing a moustache stands for. It’s about changing our faces (or trying to) to change the face of men’s health, by putting a fun twist on serious issues, to try to encourage conversations about men’s health issues and deal with issues when or if they arise. Using the moustache as a catalyst for conversation, the Thomas Mills Mo Bros hope to bring about change by providing the opportunity for males to learn and talk about their health more openly.

From The Headteacher...In December we were pleased to welcome Dr Tim Coulson, the Regional Commissioner for Education, as Guest of Honour at Awards Evening. In his speech he made reference to our Charter of Values and it was pleasing that he saw these values in action when he visited in November. The twelve values underpin the exceptional ethos which exists at this school and supports the many opportunities that develop our young people. A great example is ‘Leadership and Enterprise’. Our Sixth Form contribute enormously to the wider life of the school as well as develop skills which will last a lifetime. This could be clearly seen at the Christmas Concert when the audience enjoyed some exceptional performances, many of which were led by students. The Young Enterprise Team is currently developing their ingenuity and business skills by marketing personalised photo frames.

ARKWRIGHT SCHOLARSHIP SUCCESS

Philip Hurst

Great leadership is also provided by the School Council representatives who suggest many ideas for their school. A group of Year 11 pupils organised a successful ‘Christmas Jumper Day’’ to fundraise for Save the Children. Our Charity Day on the 13th March provides another opportunity to see the leadership efforts of our pupils as they organise a range of fundraising events. I congratulate all our pupils on their endeavours and I am convinced that the future will be in secure hands when they are at the helm!

Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards EveningIn October the school hosted its annual Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards Evening, at which many pupils were able to receive their certificates and be congratulated on their achievements. It also provided the opportunity to thank the huge number of staff, governors and parents who supported the pupils through their endeavours. The guest speaker was former pupil Natasha Mealing, who now works as senior instructor at the Thorpe Woodlands Activity Centre. She delivered an excellent and heartfelt speech, in which she often referred to the process of undertaking, and eventually overcoming, challenges as an integral part of growing up and adult life – a valuable lesson for all our pupils. Natasha also used examples from her own background of how persistence and self-determination ultimately resulted in great personal achievement, even when she believed success was beyond her capabilities.Special Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards were presented to Joe Poacher (Year 11), Katia Cardin (Year 12) and Madeline Oughton (Year 12) for outstanding commitment, resilience and leadership, both on the expeditions themselves and in the extensive planning and preparation that began weeks before. Huge congratulations go to these three and to all the pupils who have completed their awards in the last year.

We have worked hard over the years to nurture and develop strong engineering and design skills and help develop highly-skilled technical students.

Part of this process has been securing scholarship places through the Arkwright Foundation for our 6th form students. Places are few and far between, but Thomas Mills has built quite a reputation for nurturing talented students in design, technology and engineering, producing several Arkwright scholars over the years.

Only 410 Scholarships were awarded this year, one of which went to Katherine Fernig in Year 12. She will join our two current Year 13 Arkwright Scholars, Abbie Dunford and Andrew Watts.

The scholarships inspire and nurture future leaders in engineering and design by supporting students with their A Level studies and encouraging them to pursue engineering or technical design at university or through a higher-level apprenticeship.

Those who are awarded a scholarship receive the following:• Financial support over 2 years of A level Study (£600 over 2 years)• Free CAD Software• Engineering Experiences, visits and possibly work placements• University taster courses• Discounted membership of some professional institutions,• Mentoring

If you are a pupil in Year 10 or 11 with an interest in Engineering and would like to find out more, speak to Mr Thompson in the Design Technology Department.

D I D Y O U K N O W ? …recently published statistics from Ofsted and the Department for Education show that the Year 11 pupils of 2014 made stunning progress in their five years at Thomas Mills High School. A Best 8 Value Added score of 1034.7 may not mean very much to many readers, but demon-strates the progress made from the end of Key Stage 2 (Year 6) to the end of Key Stage 4 (Year 11). This score is statistically above progress achieved nationally and places Thomas Mills in the top 7% of the schools in the country. Well done to last year’s Year 11 pupils!

D I D Y O U K N O W ? …Darius Whatling and William Woodruff have been busy creating apps for Apple. Darius became interested in coding and, after downloading the necessary software, he started developing his first game. Darius then decided to become an Apple developer and his game ‘Rocket Burst’ is free to download from the App Store for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. Will, who has been interested in programming for many years, has created an app named ‘Tutorific ‘ which has also been given the green light by Apple and is available to download from the App Store and which is also available for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. Will found that the most challenging part of the process was writing the 135 tutorials and designing individual graphics to suit each one. Congratulations to both boys for their endeavours.

Twickenham TripOn the 22nd November a group of 49 Thomas Mills students ranging from Year 8 to Year 13 departed for Twickenham, the home of English rugby, to watch England play Samoa. Trips like this are always good fun and that is certainly the response I have had from all the people I have asked. The match was a good one with England winning 28-9 and all of the Thomas Mills group were enjoying the game, although some people seemed more interested in the camera man on a Segway!

Alfie Hulbert and Peter Gugenheim, among others, with chants of ‘Segway, Segway give us a wave’ and ‘we love you Segway we do’ were heard throughout the match much to the amusement of people. During half time we were lucky enough to see the England Women’s World Cup winning squad parade the trophy around the pitch. We arrived back at Thomas Mills at about 1 o’clock in the morning having had a great day out.

CHRISTMAS JUMPERS!Staff and students entered into the spirit of National Christmas Jumper Day on December 12th. A wonderful array of the decorative, flamboyant and completely tasteless brightened up a dull Friday in December.

We really enjoyed our trip to London and although the coach journey was long, it was definitely worth it.

Our favourite part of the trip was the tour of Chelsea Football Club's stadium. It was very interesting to discover where Chelsea get their income from and to tour behind the scenes in the changing rooms, get close to the well-kept pitch and tour the stadium. It was a great experience.

The Bank of England was also very interesting with informative displays about the history and development of the bank, including its role today in managing the economy. Our last visit was to the Westfield Shopping Centre to discover how the area around the Olympic Park had been redeveloped and improved for the local community and visitors.

We also saw the main sights in London, like the Shard, the Tower of London, Houses of Parliament and Big Ben. The trip helped us to understand more about how business and finance works in London.

Peru awaits adventurous 6th FormersFollowing the successful expedition to Botswana and Zambia in 2013, eleven 6th formers and two members of staff (Mrs Middleton and Mr Tattoo) will be heading to Peru in the summer holidays for a three week expedition. The party will spend two days acclimatising in the capital, Lima, before an internal flight to Cusco from where the group will spend time in Vilcamayo (The Sacred Valley) undertaking a community project with the indigenous population.

The expedition continues with a five day trek on the Salcantay Trail, culminating with a day at the world heritage site of Machu Pichu, one of the greatest attractions of South America. In addition to personal fundraising, the team has raised additional group funds with regular cake stalls and a spectacular ‘Taste of South America’ evening when the group planned, prepared and served a three course meal to 120 guests. Local businesses and friends kindly provided ‘promises’ for an auction and items for the raffle. A total of £4000 was raised to pay for transport to training events, items of kit that the group will need on expedition, and the coach to Heathrow when they set off in July, as well as money to support the community project.

Training and preparation accelerates after Easter with a camping and walking weekend in the New Forest in preparation for a departure date towards the end of July. Dennis Tattoo, Trip Co-ordinator

At that time the school was very crowded because of the presence of numerous evacuees. There had also been early heavy snow and many children were absent from school with illness. Despite this, the concert went ahead and was a great success. The boy playing Tiny Tim (4th from the left, front row) was one of the evacuee children. Only his surname is recorded, Burns, and the fact that he is an evacuee!

Just before the half term break in October, Thomas Mills pupils marked the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of World War One with an evening of music and poetry readings at St. Michael’s Church. The orchestra performed Butterworth’s ‘The Banks of Green Willow’ with the Mills Singers giving a very moving rendition of ‘For the Fallen’ by Laurence Binyon, set to music by Mark Blatchly. The Head Boy and Head Girl read ‘Counter-Attack’ by Siegfried Sassoon and ‘To his love’ by Ivor Gurney respectively. Alice Christie’s composition, inspired by Owen’s poem ‘Futility’, was poignantly reflective.

Once again the Annual Christmas Concert provided an opportunity for the many skilled school musicians to perform an outstanding variety of music. A number of students directed and rehearsed ensembles this year, including 6th formers Jack Heydon, Steve Cook and Frank Evans who have worked with the Samba Group; Rachel Routledge who organised and rehearsed a Year 7 Chamber Choir and Jordan Wiseman and Shuling Appleby who conducted the 2nd Orchestra and Flute Choir respectively. Mrs Ducker made an impressive debut directing the performances for the Year 7 Choir,

Chamber Choir and Senior Choir

Richard Hanley, Director of Music

Poetry-by-HeartThe school winner of this year's poetry recital competition was Bailey Bendix-Hickman and the runner-up, Simeon Edwards.

Bailey recited ‘There is no God’ by Arthur Hugh Clough and ‘The Eater’ by Glyn Maxwell and Simeon’s chosen poems were ‘The Song of the Smoke’ by W.E.B. DuBois and ‘Wind’ by Ted Hughes.

The judges were once again thoroughly impressed by the standard of our competitors. Both boys will represent the school in the regional finals and we wish them the best of luck.

School Production - Thoroughly Modern Millie

This year’s school production of ‘Thoroughly Modern Millie’ played to packed houses in November. Set in the 1920s, this light-hearted comedy brought out the best in the talented cast. Principals, Maddie Brooks (Millie), Jack Heydon (Jimmy Smith), Molly Constanti (Miss Dorothy), Bailey Bendix-Hickman (Mr Graydon) and Katie Russell (Muzzy van Hossmere) were consummate professionals. Athena Hanson-Aherne (Mrs Meers), Freddy Legg (Ching Ho) and Jake Waddell (Bun Foo) provided many comedy moments. The strong chorus, band and back stage crew all helped to make the show an enjoyable success. This year, for the first time, two Upper 6th students took on the role of Assistant Directors. Jamie Rose and Emile Burgoyne were tireless in their commitment to the production: full of energy and ideas, and able to motivate the cast – next stop Hollywood!

At the start of October, 33 students from Years 10 to 13 visited one of Jaguar UK manufacturing factories in Birmingham. The trip helped to show students interested in design and engineering future career possibilities.

Inspired by their founder Sir William Lyons, for over 90 years Jaguar has pushed the boundaries of what is possible, in terms of design, performance and beauty. Although the company has seen many changes over the decades it is one of the UK’s leading car manufacturers, setting the standard in new technology, manufacturing processes and innovative design.

The students were very lucky to have a tour of the XJ model production line, where they were able to see the building of the cars, beginning with the sub frame. They also saw the purpose built robots which undertake complex jobs, and observed the huge overhead conveyor system which moved cars round the factory.

Mr Thompson did try to negotiate a range of free samples for the school, but even with the offer of free student labour he was unable to secure even one car.

Before leaving the factory, managers at Jaguar did comment on how impressed they were with the Thomas Mills students. They commented on how pleasant it was to meet such a nice group of poilte, well-presented students who showed a genuine interest. Thomas Mills had been one of the best schools they had worked with!Richard Thompson, Head of Resistant Materials

BOOK GROUPS

Brundibár - Jubilee OperaLast term, Thomas Mills students from Years 7 – 13 performed with Jubilee Opera, a youth opera group, at the Jubilee Hall in Aldeburgh. ‘Brundibar’ is a brief one-act opera filled with sunny music by Czech Jew Hans Krása, performed some 50 times in Theresienstadt concentration camp by Jewish children and filmed for propaganda purposes. The cast and composer subsequently died in Auschwitz.

Jubilee Opera’s version of the opera received a 4* review in The Daily Telegraph which commented that “The children…played their parts with gusto. Julian Edwards as the sick mother’s son and Ashley May as a pompous policeman made a particularly strong impression.” It was a stunning show in every respect and to see that a significant proportion of the extraordinary talent on show came from Thomas Mills was something to be extremely proud of. It was a powerful and moving piece.

BOOK WEEKThis year saw the re-launch of Book Week. Throughout the week a number of events took place with the aim of encouraging and promoting reading across the school. Ex-Thomas Mills student

and author, Kieran Lyne, visited the school to talk about his new novel ‘The Last Confession of Sherlock Holmes’. Assemblies that week began with a Book Week documentary filmed and

edited by a Year 13 student, Will Fletcher, ably assisted by fellow sixth formers Tom Peck and John Constable, and staff from across the curriculum talked about their own books and reading in

assemblies and during lessons.

Suffolk and Norfolk Initial Teacher TrainingTraining new teachers for our local schools is vital for the education of our children – both current and future generations. And that was why school-based Initial Teacher Training was established in the two counties of Norfolk and Suffolk in 1999 – with just a single trainee teacher in that first year.

Since then, Suffolk and Norfolk Initial Teacher Training has grown enormously and now trains some 250 new teachers each year across its family of programmes:

• Suffolk and Norfolk Primary School Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT) with School Direct• Suffolk and Norfolk Secondary SCITT with School Direct• Suffolk and Norfolk Primary and Secondary School Direct Salaried (SDS)• Suffolk and Norfolk Assessment Only Route

Suffolk and Norfolk ITT prides itself in being a high-quality provider of school-based, school-led teacher training which is delivered by some of the top teachers in the region. Thomas Mills High School is a key partner school within the organisation and is involved with hosting trainees, providing training courses and is represented on the governing body. When Ofsted inspected the programmes, they were all judged to be at least Good or Outstanding.

The courses combine practical teaching with academic rigour. All ITT trainees are offered a Postgraduate Certificate in Education together with 60 Master’s Level credits validated jointly by the Universities of East Anglia and Essex.

The quality of training is paramount and this shows in trainee outcomes. Last year, over 61% of trainees across the programmes qualified with a grade of Outstanding – the perfect start to any teaching career. Not only that but 98% of trainees secured teaching posts in schools before completing their training – where nationally the figure is 75% within 6 months of course completion. One of our programmes was even rated ninth in the country in the latest Buckingham University ‘Good Teacher Training Guide’, just behind Oxford University.

Why not consider teaching as a career? If you would like to train with a very successful, high-quality, school-based teacher training provider, why not join us? Thousands of others already have including many ex-Thomas Mills pupils. So whether you are a pupil, parent, Teaching Assistant, or in any other role in the Thomas Mills community, why not get in touch with us?

For further information, go to www.snitt.co.uk or ring 01473 265080

We look forward to welcoming you at Suffolk and Norfolk Initial Teacher Training in the near future.

Geoff Robinson, Suffolk and Norfolk Initial Teacher Training Leader D I D Y O U K N O W ? …The progress of all pupils; boys, girls, disadvantaged pupils, low prior attainers, middle prior attainers and SEN pupils (without Statement), were all significantly above national levels at GCSE in 2014.

Junior Book Group was launched earlier in the year for pupils in Years 7 and 8. The group, run by upper 6th English Literature students, began the year with David Walliams’s, ‘Awful Auntie’. The group meets every three to four weeks for informal discussions on a range of junior fiction.

Senior Book Group was launched in November for 6th formers. The group is run by the students and the books are selected at random by lucky dip. Our first book, selected by Freddie Gage, was ‘Until Further Notice I am Alive’ by Tom Lubbock, a personal memoir addressing one of the most ancient philosophical questions – how should a man die? The group tries to meet every month for informal discussions, where we talk about the book and decide on the next one.

POETRY COMPETITIONThe first writing competition of the academic year saw students writing poetry inspired by the theme of REMEMBRANCE. We were delighted to receive such a wide range of entries ranging from personal memories to war poems.

Congratulations to our winners: Junior winner was Matilda White (8JMc) Senior winner was Shuling Appleby (13SPe)

Thank you to everyone who entered.

The Unknown - by Matilda White – 8JMc

Here we lie, with crosses overhead,With no one to name us; call us back from the dead,We lived, we fought; we saw many die,Now we lie here, under the dark sky.

We are remembered with poppies of red,All that is left to remember the dead,An inky darkness consumes our souls, Only left – a big dark hole.

Battle cries still ring in our heads,They all live and grow whilst we remain dead,Now, as we lie in this lost war zone,Forever – we remain the unknown.

Old Friend – by Shuling Appleby

Long time, old friend.I never thought I’d see you again. You’re exactly as you used to be – A perfect reflection of my memory. The stories you bring are hard to ignore; They’re new to me but I’ve heard them before.I have sincerely missed your company:Spending time together, just you and me.I long for the next time we meet,Tomorrow, after dark, when I’m asleep. But, until then,So long, old friend.

On Friday 27 September the Year 9 Language Leaders served a French and German breakfast to Year 7s. We seated each form in the canteen and showed them the menus (that the Language Leaders had made). The options were: orange juice, apple juice, pains au chocolat or jam doughnuts. This went down well with the Year 7s. When they had finished there were some doughnuts left over which we ate! By Maisie Sach, Ellie Sawyer, Miriam Kendall, Natalie Cardin, Eily Harmsworth

.....Some of the Language Leaders stayed after school the day before the breakfast to help decorate the canteen with bunting and flags. The following morning we dressed up in French and German outfits and soon the Year 7s were filling the canteen and the noise rose dramatically. There was some confusion when one form group didn’t turn up! The Year 7’s thanked us with a big ‘merci beaucoup’. I really enjoyed it and look forward to the teaching that we will soon do! By Ollie Garvie

The autumn term has been a very busy one for our sports teams with many positive results. One hundred fixtures have been played, of which we won fifty. Additionally, twenty two tournaments have been entered. Six were won and many 2nd and 3rd places achieved.

This shows the great sporting talent we have here at Thomas Mills. The Year 7 teams have made an excellent start with some fabulous wins in netball, hockey, football and rugby.

The Year 8s have also had some great wins already, including a 10-0 win in hockey against Woodbridge. The Year 9 netballers came 1st in the Area Tournament, which led them through to the County Finals where they came 6th.

The Year 9 boys badminton team also came 1st in their tournament, qualifying them for the County Finals in January. We wish them luck. The U14 girls, U16 boys and girls badminton teams all came 2nd in their Area Tournaments as well.

The Year 9 rugby team also deserve a mention as they are going from strength to strength with considerable wins over Alde Valley (64-17) and Bungay (45-7).

In Year 10, the rugby team got off to a great start, coming 1st in the Northern Area Tournament. They went on to come 3rd in the County Finals at Woodbridge in November. A fantastic effort, well done!

The Year 11 teams have had some good wins this season as well as some narrow defeats. The U18 squads have been busy, with the netballers winning every game played, progressing through to the County Finals at Rushmere where they came 4th.

Well done to all students involved. Keep up the good work and hopefully we will be reporting back with some great wins this term too.
