As this is the first issue of MOMENTUM, I want to start by saying

THANK YOU—thank you for putting your trust in our platform,

and the many hours of your hard work that have made Uber ev-

erything that it is. 2014 was a monumental year: We expanded

to 210 new cities, averaging a new launch every two days. We

entered many new international markets and now serve 64 per-

cent of the U.S. population. None of it would have been possible

without your partnership. Not a single hour of the day goes by

without us thinking about how we can make partnering with

Uber a better experience for you. We’re tirelessly focused on

making the Uber platform work better for partners.

In fact, that’s what this magazine is all about: We want to

strengthen the community of our driver partners—currently

150,000 people strong—by making sure you are up to date on

new developments within our company and giving you new and

improved methods to connect to us and one another. As we gear

up for another big year of improvements, we look forward to

hearing from you about what more we can do to ensure you

have the most positive experience possible on the road with

our platform.

Thank you for everything you do to make each Uber ride

a success. Thanks to you, we’re now in 275 cities around the

globe, spanning 54 countries and every inhabitable continent—

and with your support, we’re not slowing down any time soon.

Sincerely,

RYAN GRAVES

IN THE DRIVER’S SEAT

HEALTHY TIPS FOR BETTER TRIPSUber spoke with Alexandra Sowa, MD, a doctor in New York City, to get her insights

on potential health issues for Uber partners and ways to keep yourself safe and healthy

SLEEP

It can be tempting

to drive a few extra

hours for more fares,

even if that means

giving up some sleep.

But don’t—it’s unsafe

for you and for others

on the road. Sleep

deprivation can impair

judgment and reaction

time. Sowa says, “In

order for adults to

have optimal energy

every day, you need

seven to nine hours

of sleep. For drivers

especially, this is not a

luxury, it’s a neces-

sity.” And a coffee

break can’t replace

any of those hours

of sleep, Sowa adds.

“Caffeine and other

stimulants don’t over-

come severe sleep

deprivation—it just

doesn’t work.”

BACK/SHOULDER

HEALTH

We know it can be

hard to catch a break

between trips, but

keep in mind that

sitting in the same po-

sition without a break

isn’t good for you

and can cause back,

shoulder, or neck pain.

The good news? It’s

easy to prevent these

problems. Sowa rec-

ommends stretching

frequently, even just

getting out of the car

and walking around

briefly, and that driv-

ers avoid sitting on

wallets or other hard

objects. Sowa also

suggests shopping for

back support pillows

and cushions, partic-

ularly if your car seat

doesn’t provide great

lower back support.

LIFTING

Carrying luggage or

packages for riders is

always a nice gesture

if you are physically

able. Sowa simply

cautions, “Don’t bend

at the waist, always

lift by bending at the

knees.” This can pro-

tect your back from

taking the full weight

of what you’re lifting.

HYDRATION

Drinking water

throughout the day

is always important.

Experts recommend

six to eight glasses

per day. Even if you’re

trying to maximize

driving time, don’t

skimp on drinking wa-

ter because you don’t

want to take time

to find a bathroom.

Among other risks,

Sowa observes, “you

can be prone to kid-

ney stones if you’re

dehydrated.”

CARDIOVASCULAR

HEALTH

Driving is sedentary,

meaning a seated, inac-

tive job. A completely

sedentary lifestyle can

put you at increased

risk for heart disease

and weight gain. But

you don’t have to take

hours out of your day

to exercise to avoid

this. According to

Sowa, “as little as 10

minutes [of aerobic

exercise] a day can

help fight off weight

gain and problems

with your heart.”

Aerobic exercise is

anything from climb-

ing stairs or jogging

to kickboxing or

swimming.

GAINING MOMENTUM An introduction to Uber’s new partner loyalty program

You work hard, and we know it. Whether you’re driving eight

hours per day or eight hours per week, we want to be certain

that your hard work doesn’t go unrecognized—or unrewarded.

That’s the thinking behind Momentum Partner Rewards,

Uber’s new partner loyalty program. With business and lifestyle

rewards, plus special status for top-performing partners coming

soon, this program has something for everyone. Even if you’re

partnering with Uber part-time, you stand to benefit. Here are

some of the highlights:

• Personalized Health Insurance Recommendations: We know that

finding affordable, effective health insurance is a top priority for

many partners, so Uber has worked with Stride Health to offer

a customized online tool for all driver partners—at no cost. In 15

minutes or less, you’ll be able to browse side-by-side health plan

comparisons to help you choose the best health care for you and

your family.*

• Reduced Vehicle Expenses: Whether you need new tires, a rou-

tine oil change, or a fresh coat of paint, partners now have a

personal pit crew at over 10,000 locations nationwide, thanks to

Momentum’s exclusive discounts. Savings are up to 15 percent at

major auto maintenance retailers such as AutoZone, Firestone,

Maaco, Meineke, Midas, Jiffy Lube, and Valvoline.

• Personal Rewards for You and Your Family: We’re working with

top wireless carriers AT&T and Verizon to deliver deep discounts

on your cell phone/wireless services. Discounts are from 15–18

percent and also extend to your immediate family.

The most important thing to keep in mind is that this is only

the beginning! We look forward to expanding our offerings to

you on automotive discounts, lifestyle services, and business

enhancements.

Let us know what you’d like to see included in the program by

emailing [email protected].

*Stride Health is currently available to partners in California, Illinois, Florida, New York, Pennsylvania, and Texas. It will expand to all states

where Uber is available throughout 2015.

AUSTIN-BASED FLORENCIO EXPLAINS WHY HE

WAS AN EARLY ADOPTER

Flo was one of the first partners on the platform when

Uber launched in Austin back in March. In addition to

being a husband and proud father of two daughters,

Flo is a high school teacher and wrestling coach. Now,

he also drives for Uber. “I get to be a love counselor,

chauffeur to the celebrities, and tour guide all at the

same time. Once I even drove Travis Kalanick [Uber’s

co-founder and CEO]. I made a wrong turn and Kalanick

caught it right away,” says Flo with a grin.

So, what’s his trick to finding the time to get it all

done? “It’s no problem,” says Flo. “Uber is a flexible way

to earn money. In fact, it’s hard not to earn money on

the platform. Uber is on my terms, and my time is valu-

able. I have small kids, and don’t want to miss time with

them—and I don’t.”

A typical day for Flo: He wakes up and drives from

5:30 a.m. to 7 a.m.—he gets in all of those airport runs—

then has breakfast with his daughters, takes them to

school, and heads to his job as a high school teacher

and wrestling coach. After his girls are in bed for the

night, he’ll drive for a few more hours from about

8:30 p.m. to around 11 p.m. On weekends, he likes to

drive after 10 p.m., when demand spikes. “I’m hooked

on Uber,” says Flo. “I recommend it to all of my fellow

teachers and friends as a solid way to earn money.”

AUSTIN COMES ABOARDTexas’s state capital is one of the fastest-growing cities in the United States.

Now, it’s also a permanent home for Uber—thanks to our policy team and

ordinances passed by the Austin City Council on October 16.

Without a doubt, Uber owes Austin’s success so far to the driver partners

and Austinites who signed petitions, attended City Council meetings, and

made sure their voices were heard. Thanks to all of them, “Silicon Hills” now

joins Silicon Valley (the San Francisco Bay Area), Silicon Alley (New York

City), and Silicon Beach (Los Angeles) as a U.S. city that is innovating not just

in tech but in transportation as well.

Uber worked around the clock to pass regulations so that Austinites could

have the same driving opportunity as other cities. Check out the results for

the month of October:

• Austin partners completed 7x more trips than in previous months.

• Gross fares are up nearly 10x.

• 7x as many new users took an Uber ride in October 2014 (compared to

June 2014.)

Austin is now one of the top 20 cities worldwide for gross bookings.

During the two weeks of Austin City Limits (ACL), Uber partners provided

more than 100,000 trips! Now the Live Music Capital of the World can rock

on. Whether you are driving during ACL or South by Southwest (SXSW)—or

any other time of year—rest assured we’re behind you. We all want to see

driver partners flourish, and this is just the beginning.

PRO TIPS FROM A PRO PARTNERSofiane was one of Uber’s first driver partners in San Francisco, our first city. MOMENTUM magazine caught up with him to hear about his platform experiences and why driving with Uber never gets old—not even after 20,000 trips.

be happy about the service—the way they want it, when they

want it. In general, I enjoy seeing this business get to the level

that it’s at now. There has been a lot of hard work put into it—

there is no doubt about that.

M: What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned since partnering

with Uber?

S: Partnering with Uber, I’ve learned how important it is to pay

attention to the behavior of the clients, like when they like to go

certain places or where they love to hang out. If you really focus

on the job, you can pick up on things like when event days are

happening and whether there will be crowds of people at certain

locations, like AT&T Park for a game or a

concert. In San Francisco, there are a lot

of new restaurants and venues opening

all the time, and because the clients are

following that, you have to follow that,

too. From there, you can focus on how to

control your driving strategy in order to

get more business.

M: What tips do you have for drivers who

are just starting to partner with Uber?

S: Learn how to navigate the city—that’s

key for a new partner who is just starting

out. When I started driving in San Fran-

cisco, I didn’t know anything about the

city, but I ended up learning everything

about San Francisco from partnering with

Uber. The key is to put as many hours in

as possible on the road. Do some research on a map, learn the

names of the streets, and then go practice. Get in your car and

go drive. Once you learn the street names, everything gets easi-

er, and you learn the fastest ways to get from one neighborhood

to another. Now, as soon as I have a client and he tells me an

address or a number, I ask for cross streets and I automatically

know where to go and what the fastest way is to get there.

M: What are some of your strategies for providing an excep-

tional experience for those who ride with you?

S: On my end, as a driver, it’s about the simple things: providing

good customer service, being on time, making sure I follow the

right route and don’t get lost, and making good conversation

with the client. Also, with the map and pin drop function, it’s

easy to locate one another and be on time, which is really im-

portant. If it’s an exceptional experience for the client, it ends up

being an exceptional experience for the driver.

MOMENTUM: What were you doing before you started partner-

ing with Uber, and what initially led you to Uber?

Sofiane: I got to the United States from North Africa, and as an

immigrant I was looking for a job on Craigslist right around the

time when Uber started. I actually ended up starting to drive

about two months after Uber started.

Back in North Africa, I was essentially a safety engineer in

the oil industry, making sure workers on oil drilling rigs were

safe, productive, and healthy. When I came here, it was a big

transition for me in terms of the culture. I had to focus on how

to get back to school in order to get my degrees from home to

be recognized. To pay for that, I started driving for Uber, which

paid for my studies and certification pro-

gram. Now, I’m certified to work in the

states in my original job, which is in the

oil industry. At this point, though, I’m not

actually sure if I want to get back to my

industry or keep driving with Uber. I love

my industry, and it’s a passion for me,

but I also love partnering with Uber.

M: During your time partnering with Uber,

what types of vehicles have you driven?

S: In July 2011, I started my own fleet.

At first, I started with one car, and then

because business was going well, I decid-

ed to add another car, another car, and

another car. At my peak, I had five cars

and five drivers. Eventually, I decided to

reduce the fleet and just keep a car for

myself. I have found out that doing that on my own with one

car and having a very constant schedule are worth more to me.

M: What did you learn from managing people in your fleet?

S: Managing people was great. My drivers had no experience

with driving or customer service, so I helped them learn how to

be productive and give the clients a good experience. Because

it’s a software-based concept, I also taught the drivers how to

get around and how to maneuver the Uber app. I even gave my

drivers really basic PowerPoint presentations, which were most-

ly based on how to be strategic to get the most out of their shifts.

M: What do you like about partnering with Uber?

S: I really enjoy the convenience of partnering with Uber, and

the fact that you can choose your own schedule. Beyond that, I

enjoy giving the perfect rides to people, and I like seeing them

with me on the flight and had to stop to ship items on the way.

Mikhayel made several trips to the car carrying my belongings. I

found out as I shipped the stuff that it weighed 300 pounds, which

meant Mikhayel had taken 300 pounds, plus two suitcases, plus

some more stuff in three carry-ons that I was planning on consoli-

dating at LAX.

Finally, we made it to LAX and curbside check in was closed.

Mikhayel stayed there while I found a cart, and he helped me load

it. I found out that there was 10 minutes until they closed my flight;

I had no time to consolidate my carry-on bags as planned. I took a

giant leap of faith and begged Mikhayel to mail me two of the bags

the next day and gave him money to do so. I had no idea if there

was anything valuable in them or if he would actually send them.

When I got to my mother’s, I fell asleep for 24 hours, and when I

woke up there was a text message from him with a picture of the

package and the tracking number. Less than a week later, my pack-

age came.

I only wish that you could move Mikhayel to Philadelphia. He

represented your company above and beyond. He knew that I could

not give him repeat business as I was moving yet still treated me

like a VIP. He deserves a billboard on Sunset Boulevard.”

SIXTH STAR WINNERS

We know every partner works hard to give clients the five-star experience. Some-

times, partners have an opportunity to do more than that—and occasionally they

become heroes. We hear amazing stories from riders every day, so we launched

the Sixth Star program to honor partners who truly go beyond. Here, grateful riders

share the stories that won these incredible partners their “Sixth Star.”

TOOLS OF THE TRADE

WHAT ARE THE BEST NEW MODELS FOR 2015?

AN EXPERT RECOMMENDS TOYOTA PRIUS AND

CAMRY FOR UBERX PARTNERS

When it comes to the best vehicles for logging long

hours behind the wheel, who better to talk to than a per-

son who knows cars inside and out? We caught up with

Don Davis, director of Toyota Walnut Creek’s AutoCredit

Custom Finance Department, to hear which 2015 mod-

els provide the safety, affordability, dependability, and

comfort you need. Uber is always on the lookout for new

ways to enhance the partner experience and help part-

ners finance new vehicles at better rates.

According to Davis, the Toyota Prius has been a

long-standing favorite of both drivers and riders. It is

a staple of the auto industry for dependability and fuel

efficiency, averaging an estimated 51 miles per gallon.

All three Prius models have back-up cameras and Blue-

tooth hands-free navigation, which facilitates safety for

drivers and passengers. The Prius 2015 has 17-inch al-

loy wheels, premium stitching, and dark chrome accents

to enhance its interior design, as well as a spacious in-

terior, turn signal mirrors, and an illuminated footwell

area. Additional features include a Solar Roof, which

helps keep cabin air temperature close to that of the

outside air, and remote air conditioning you can activate

even before you get in the car. The Prius also employs a

Pre-Collision System, which applies brakes and retracts

the front seatbelts if it detects a frontal collision, and a

Lane Keep Assist, which helps keep the Prius in its lane.

The Toyota Camry has also proven to be a successful

vehicle for uberX partners. Davis notes that the Camry

Hybrid is particularly popular among passengers, thanks

to its comfortable interior and smooth, quiet ride. The

Camry 2015 has a sports mesh front grille, LED head-

lights, 18-inch alloy wheels, and a dual exhaust system

to help you get the most out of your drive. The 2015

model also has a wireless charging system for your mo-

bile devices, as well as a Blind Spot Monitor, which will

help you know when it’s safe to change lanes or back out

of a driveway. The Camry has optimum fuel economy

ratings as well, with the 4-cylinder offering 35 highway

mpg, and the V6 offering 31 highway mpg.

The bottom line: All of these models are recommend-

ed for their affordability, fuel efficiency, safety, and di-

versity in style. If you’re a partner looking for the perfect

car for ridesharing, you’ll find great options at Toyota!

PIT STOPSWhen you’re on the road and you gotta go, you gotta go. Here is some tried-and-true

advice on the best places to find free and clean bathrooms, recommended by your fellow

• In San Diego, CA, Ernesto recommends the gas station in the

East Village at 16th Street and G Street.

PORT-A-POTTIES

• In San Francisco, CA, Denny says that as you get farther

from the Financial District, you’re more likely to find a Port-

a-Potty that’s unlocked and open for use.

SUPERMARKETS

• Costco, Safeway, and other large supermarket chains double

as great pit stops in any city!

If all else fails, try your smartphone: Apps like Sit or Squat, Where to Wee, Toilet Finder, and Bathroom Scout are almost like an

Uber for bathrooms, providing crowd-sourced information to help direct you to the nearest available, clean, public restroom.
