The Lullwood Group is a San Antonio-based artist collective that encourages participation, fosters exploration, and promotes art discovery in many forms.

Beginning July 14, 2012, The Lullwood Group started curating monthly exhibitions at the 107 Gallery, formerly LoneStar Studios, which continues to serve as a pop-up exhibition space in the Lone Star Arts District on Second Saturdays. The collective kicked-off their Corridor Series, which includes artists living and working along I35 and I10 corridors.

The Lullwood Group Quarterly Report documents our curatorial and artistic collaborations. We hope you enjoy our endeavors so far!

Hello.

JulyARTISTSGillian Lambert (Houston, TX) Brittney Meyer (Austin, TX)

Saturday, July 14, 2012

Gillian Lambert and Brittney Meyer were our first featured artists at 107 Gallery. Gillian exhibited a drawing series called Self-Deception. Beautifully drawn, these self-portraits deliberately alter the artist with distortions and physical manipulations challenging notions of beauty. We especially loved her latest work, a self-portrait with chicken feet.

Taking food photography beyond Bon Appetite, Brittney takes edible delights out of this world. Cotton candy float in the sky as popsicles ooze a rainbow of colors across the landscape. We highly recommend the animated .gif of Spam hovering in a tropical sunset with a side of space tacos.

Music for each event is generously organized by James Woodard (Member of the Grasshopper Lies Heavy) and Jeannette Muniz (Good Job Texas Radio Show). Our September musical guests were Marcus Rubio and Matt Thomas who performed “epic, experimental Krautrock”.

The Lullwood Group and 107 gallery are excited to partner with GLI Distributing to offer visitors Lone Star Beer, the “Official Beer of the Lone Star Arts District”. (Shown here with our limited edition Lullwood koozies.)

Saturday, August 11, 2012

Elizabeth McDonald and Seth Orion Schwaiger opened up a studio in San Antonio for a year. Their exhibition at 107 Gallery was a farewell of sorts, as they continue their artistic endeavors overseas. Elizabeth’s paintings combine reality and dreamlike qualities that the artist states comes from “two angles; the concrete and the intuitive.” Seth’s figurative sculptures of wood, metal and wax leave behind traces of his marks along with the history of the natural material. It was a pleasure working with both artists and we hope that our paths will cross again soon.

The Lullwood Group presented Cr(e)ate by the RJP Nomadic Gallery. The RJP Nomadic Gallery continues to highlight functional design aesthetics and arts practice as highly influenced by existing infrastructures through a labor based performance and installation. Repurposing the protective shell of the art crate into fine art object through exhibition offers a metaphorical unpacking of typically formal objects, revealing them as purveyors of history and mystery. Arriving at 6 p.m. on Saturday night, the RJP Nomadic Gallery unloaded a 40’ Ryder truck and began installing crates throughout the night at 107 Gallery. About the RJP Nomadic Gallery: Established in 2007 the RJP Nomadic Gallery developed in Lubbock, TX as a community outreach project utilizing restrictive ingenuity. Most recently the RJP Nomadic Gallery participated in the Texas Biennial 2011 with Unpacking Access, where they revealed the “Gallery Kit 2.0”.

Drawing hundreds of

surprised viewers and posing just as

many questions during the one-night stands,

RJP Nomadic Gallery shines a very real light

on cultural and practical dark matter in a

field that often feels reserved for those of high

financial standing; it was D.I.Y. culture

at its best. Power to the people.

LuminariaARTISTSThe Lullwood Group

May 2012

The collective participated in Luminaria creating a geocache adventure for the event that paid homage to the mascot of HemisFair ‘68, Luther the Dragon, who later became the cult classic character, H.R. PufnStuf.

Geocache players received written clues that lead to coordinates that were hidden throught the park. Once the final set of coordinates were found, players utilized their cell phone gps units to find the final location of the prize within the park. The grand prize for the winner was a one-of-a-kind felted head of H.R. PufnStuf that was created especially for Luminaria by Leticia Rocha-Zivadinovic of Cretur Fetur.
