Cover StoryFrom being the industry leaders to

being the first multinational cement company of Pakistan, Lucky Cement

has always worked towards setting an exemplary benchmark.

Our legacy of growth spreads over half a century. Starting from a trading house in Karachi, we have come a long way with an inheritance of growth. Staying true to our core value, we hope that we will continue on this path to success with hard-work and dedication while remaining true to our core values.

Lucky Cement has proven itself to be the market leader not only in terms of its market share but also its grasp upon emerging opportunities through its result oriented approach. Keeping in view the expected growth in cement demand on the back of public and private sector construction projects as well as mega infrastructure development projects primarily driven by China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) initiative, Lucky Cement decided to increase cement production capacity with the installation of a new cement production line at Karachi Plant of 1.25 million tons which will become operational by the end of 2017.

Increasing our footprint in Punjab, Lucky Cement is actively pursuing due diligence for the Plant. The plant will not only focus on addressing the rising housing market but will also cater to the need supplemented by the China Pakistan Economic Corridor.

Further diversifying our business portfolio, we are taking forward the completion of our 660 megawatt Coal Power Plant at Port Qasim. The plant will furnish the energy crisis by injecting low-cost energy into the national grid.

We would also like to delightfully break the news that the joint venture cement plant in Congo is about to commence its commercial operations, adding another feather in our cap.

Karachi PlantQ1. Tell us something about your childhood. What is the

fondest memory of those days?

ANS: Childhood is the best period of life. This period is full of pleasant memories. My childhood is full of pleasant memories as well as naughtiness and stream of love. For the fondest memory of those days I remember that in the summer vacations I went to meet my cousin in Lahore. We went for picnics at different picnic points.

Q2. What made you join Lucky Cement and

what were the circumstances in those days?

ANS: I joined Lucky Cement, Karachi Plant in its Green Field Project in March 2005 as a Junior Engineer (Mechanical). Those were the difficult days of our project as there was no infrastructure present at the site but we did our best as a team and finally commissioned line E & F. During a tenure of 10 years the project team successfully accomplished the major national and international projects in Iraq & now we are busy in the commissioning of NYA Project at DR Congo.

Q3. What are your strengths as a person?

ANS: I am always considerate about having strong work ethics. I am committed to doing whatever it takes to meet my targets.

Q4. Who is your favorite leader/personality?

ANS: My favorite leader is our Prophet (PBUH) who is the greatest leader in the world.

Q5. What is that one thing very few people know about

you?

ANS: I am not open to many people. I’m usually quiet and I don’t really prefer attention.

Q6. What would you do like to do in life in next five

years?

ANS: Obviously I see myself as a more active team member of LCL and with numerous LCL projects in pipe line, I

would like to avail all these opportunities in an industrious manner and develop the best team to make these dreams come true.

Q7. Who is your favorite sports personality/artist?

ANS: Misbah-ul-Haq, the best captain of the Pakistan Test cricket team.

Q8. What piece of advice would you give to your fellow

colleagues ?

ANS: Being an LCL team Member, my advice would be, “Give 100% of yourself for any activity, don't be afraid to disagree(it's how you say it), be a risk taker to make any progressive attempt, admit when you are wrong, be a team player and be positive."

Sustainable development forms a significant part in Lucky Cement’s business strategies and is one of the key factors that have led the company towards progress and growth. Being one of the leading cement manufacturers in Pakistan, we have both, responsibility and opportunity to make contributions in bringing sustainability in the construction industry. With a history of two decades, LCL is not just making quality products but has extensively invested in implementing programs that reduce energy consumption and address issues of environmental degradation. Projects like Waste Heat Recovery (WHR), Tyre Derived Fuel (TDF) and Refused Derived Fuel (RDF) have not only reduced our production costs, but have taken carbon emissions to the minimum level.

The WHR department at Pezu consists of a team of 54 employees that are reporting to the Deputy General Manager, Mr Zafar Iqbal. Lucky Cement, pioneering innovation, reduced its cost by co-generating electricity by the wasted heat, which was previously being fed to the atmosphere. The WHR unit does not need any external fed fuel to operate, but it uses the wasted heat from the system as its fuel. Thus we are saving cost, environment and curtailing our energy needs in a unique way. The design of this plant hinges around the idea of encapsulating all the wasted heat from the production system and using this heat to generate steam from boilers which eventually runs the turbine engines, thus producing electricity. Apart from saving cost it is able to prove our corporate social responsibility by taking our carbon emission to minimum level.
