Summary

Basically this book is about a young man named “Emrys” who washes ashore on an island with a woman who claims to be his mother. He has no memory of his past, and a feeling there's something his “mother” is hiding from him. Something about what happened to them before they washed ashore on this island.

This novel is written in first person, “Emrys” tells the whole story from his point of view on things.

Conflicts

• He feels his mother is hiding his past• He wonders about his father• He has these powers he cannot understand

Characters

• Emrys- He learns the hard way, that with great power comes great responsibility. He becomes a hero, and a very responsible and caring person

• Shim-”a little giant”. although he may not be large in size at first, his heart is that of a giant. He risked his life to save Rhia

• Rhia-Born in the druma wood, she is very in tune with nature. She has a great knowledge of the world around her

Literary Devices

• Foreshadowing- his mother says something about his Grandfather also having powers. He will learn of his grandfather, and of his lineage

• Symbolism-He has a pet Merlin which later becomes his name because he can be fierce as well as gentle, can grab hold with all his strength and never let go, can see clearly though not with his eyes, and finely he can fly. Just as his faithful bird could.

Dislikes

• Slow start, kind of boring at first.• Leaves you wondering at the end

Likes

• After you get threw the first few chapters, it’s a good book

• Slowly start to reveal his past• He meets true friends along his journey• Its only the first in the series

Recommendations

I wouldn’t really say this is a book for a specific age group. Its more of a specific kind of reader. A person who like fantasy obviously, but also someone who likes twist’s and turns in books. This book very much reminds me of the Eragon books. So anyone who liked them I think would enjoy this series to.
