Dear LA Women’s Theatre Project Patrons:
Theater was first created by the ancient Greeks and has remained a vital part of our culture, our communities and our lives. It has influenced our ideas, our religion, our society, our politics and our governments. It has survived persecu-tion and irreverence to stand as a vital piece of contemporary culture. It’s more than entertainment; it provides education, a voice and a perspective on so many levels and about so many subjects.
That is why when we acknowledge the statistics of the 21st Century, over 2500 years after the Greeks began their performances in hillside Amphitheatres, and see that only 20% of the professionals working in theater are women, not only do we realize the significant discrepancy in opportunities, but the serious loss and impact on our communities and culture, when so little of the perspec-tives and voices being heard, are female. It is our goal to work not only towards creating greater opportunities for women, but to ensure that women’s voices, perspectives and interests are presented in the performing arts and to our com-munities.
Take a look at what we have going on and then make a choice to be a part of something truly extraordinary.
Thank you for your support.
Best Wishes,Dee Jae Cox & Michele WeissCo-Founders

The Los Angeles Female Playwrights’ Initiative Study on Gender Parity and Theater
In 2010, the Los Angeles Female Playwrights Initiative conducted a study about gender parity and playwriting in Los Angeles, lead by theater artist Ella Martin. Martin, as LA FPI Study Director, coordinated efforts in three areas to acquire data on this subject:
1. by polling Los Angeles female playwrights about their theater production experiences in the past decade (which—to the best of anyone’s knowl-edge—was the first time anyone had attempted to do so);
2. by polling Los Angeles theaters who produce new work; 3. by asking the LA STAGE Alliance to share their data about female play-
wrights and productions of their work in Southern California, from 2002 – 2010.
The results of this trifurcated approach were released in March 2011. From the L.A STAGE Alliance, Martin learned that only one in five plays [20%] were written or co-written by a woman during this time in Southern California. Of the 4,796 productions in the LA STAGE Alliance database, only 993 were fe-male-authored or co-authored from the years of 2002 - 2010. By comparison, it is thought that the U.S. average is around 17% of produced, female-authored shows--although no one knows for sure, as accurate data on this topic has not been compiled on a national basis.
Martin’s two polls, which were completed on a volunteer basis by 84 female playwrights and 20 local theaters on Survey Monkey, also yielded important results. The women dramatists, self-reporting on their playwriting careers from 2000 – 2009, logged a collective total of 1,421 presentations (including produc-tions, readings and workshops) of their plays. Participating playwrights resided in three counties: 76 female playwrights were from Los Angeles County, 6 were from Orange County, and 2 were from Ventura County. In addition to statistics, subjective data in both polls provided glimpses into the L.A. theater commu-nity and artists, with theaters describing their situations as “struggling” and playwrights describing theirs as “challenging.”
Interestingly, these women playwrights had more shows produced outside of Southern California than in it. First, within L.A.: From 2000 to 2009 in Los Angeles, 830 presentations of these playwrights’ plays were made. Of that num-ber 198 (nearly 24%) were self-produced, 68 (8%) were produced by colleges or universities, and 59 (7%) were one-person shows. 505 presentations (nearly 61%) were not one-person shows, self-produced, or produced by colleges or universities, but rather were produced solely by theaters. -16-
Out of town, the playwrights had more results. From 2000 to 2009 outside Los Angeles, 842 presentations of these playwrights’ plays were made. Of that number 31 (3.6%) were self-produced, 121 (14%) were produced by colleges or universities, and 63 (7%) were one-person shows. 627 presentations (74%) were not one-person shows, self-produced, or produced by colleges or universities, but rather were produced by theaters.
The twenty L.A. theaters who responded to Martin’s survey reported data similar to what was found in the LA STAGE Alliance database. These theaters offered approximately 3,712 presentations from 2000 to 2009 (including pro-ductions, readings and workshops). Of those, it is thought that approximately 686 (18.4%) were by women, 2,634 (nearly 71%) were by men, and 9 (less than 1%) were by playwrights of unknown gender. Of the 20 theater companies that reported, the average “age” is close to around 14 years in existence.
A review of the eight L.O.R.T. houses (League of Resident Theaters) in South-ern California showed that twelve of the 53 mainstage contemporary works announced [22.5%] in 2011 were female-authored or co-authored. During the 2010-2011 award cycle, no women playwrights were nominated for the Ova-tion Awards, the Los Angeles Drama Critics’ Circle, GLAAD Awards, Tony Awards or the L.A. Weekly Awards.
The Los Angeles Female Playwrights Initiative hopes that with the release of Martin’s completed Study, there will be new awareness of this issue in the Southern California theater scene, promoting new dialogue about the partici-pation of all female theater artists in L.A.
