DEBATINGCongratulations to our Year 10 amp 11 debating teams for their excellent performance last night at the Gold Coast School Debating semi- finals It was quite the achievement to make it this far especially seeing it has been the first time these young people have debated Our Year 10 team have made it through to the grand final to be held in October Thank you to all the staff and parents for supporting our going people with this venture

This semester in the Year 8 amp 9 elective Big Life Fixes students are journeying through the Human Centred Design process They have been tasked with investigating lsquoHow might we overcome roadblocks to learning and connection so that student wellbeing and academic outcomes are improved here at LORDSrsquo As part of this process students participate in an empathy dive to build their understanding of the needs and values of the people they are designing for

Over the last few weeks they have been learning the art of asking lsquothickrsquo questions On Friday 13th August they had the opportunity to ask the questions they had crafted to a panel of staff including Ms Hoff Miss Robbins Miss Krenske Miss Norris Chappy Jez and Mrs Haywood This process gave the students rich data and helped shed light on the potential challenges faced by students in the Senior School at LORDS Staff were impressed by the quality of the questions and the professional manner in which students conducted themselves during the panel interview Students will be using their deeper understanding to narrow down their project space and prepare them for their further consultation with students from the middle school and industry experts in the coming weeks Experiences of this inquiry based nature provide students with another opportunity to develop 21st century skills such as effective communication analytical thinking as well as build their personal and social skills and will empower our students to make a positive difference to their community in the coming months We are excited to see how their projects evolve over the coming months

Junior School MusicYEAR 4 OZHARVESTThis term in Year 4 we have connected with Oz Harvest to run a unit of work exploring food sustainability in Australia As part of this unit of work the students get to explore where their food comes from and develop cooking skills by making recipes with ingredients that are normally thrown away Last week as a part of Science Week they heard from a farmer in Victoria who explained the process that grains go through to produce different foods They have been having SO much fun

PREPS ARE EXPLORING HOME This term our Prep students have been exploring what home means and how it might make us feel if we didnt have a safe home to live in They have listened to stories and reflected on emotions that may be felt by people experiencing homelessness The students developed questions and wonderings that they will explore throughout this unit of work Over the next few weeks the students will have an opportunity to connect with experts in this area and find out more about this important topic
