Most years, my wife Kathy and I take

a vacation in early November. It has nothing to

do with hunting season! I think it started back

in the late 90’s when I served on the Board of

Directors of the Lutheran School of Theology at

Chicago. There was always a meeting in No-

vember so we would drive to Chicago and then

following the days of the meeting we would

extend the time with some additional travel.

Most years, pleasant weather has lingered into

November helping to make it a nice time to get

a break before Thanksgiving and the “Holiday

Season” that follows. The one year we didn’t

go anywhere in November was three years ago.

That was the year we got three feet of snow

during the time we normally would have been

gone. For your sake, I think it’s important that

we go so that doesn’t happen again!

I have to confess though that I like

November. I like the cooler days, I find beauty

in the branches of the bare trees; I like the

crisp, sunny days but even more I like the gray,

cloudy days. Maybe having been born in No-

vember I have November in my bones.

To be sure, November is a time of

endings, most notably in the natural world as

the growing season comes to an end and the

cycle of plant life goes dormant until spring. In

church there are also endings to consider. For

one thing, at the end of the month there’s

Christ the King Sunday that marks the end of

the church year. In addition to that, on the first

Sunday of the month, this year on November

5th, there’s another reminder of endings with

the celebration of All Saints’ Day. For many, it’s

one of the more moving moments of the

church year as the names of those who died

during the past year are read, sometimes ac-

companied by the lighting of candles and the

toll of a bell. It does represent a reminder of

endings, but it’s a hopeful reminder as we cele-

brate the communion of saints that includes

the living along with those no longer physically

present.

As a chaplain for UP Home Health

and Hospice, during the year I’m involved with

other events that serve as similar reminders.

Like All Saints Day, such events are important

because death doesn’t end our relationship

with loved ones. They continue to be part of

who we are and it’s helpful to have rituals that

intentionally bring them to mind and honor

their memory. One result might be tears, but

they shouldn’t just be tears of sadness, but

tears of joy and thanksgiving too. At some of

the hospice events, people are invited to share

a memory of their loved one and it never takes

long for the mood to shift as one person’s good

memory triggers that of another. Especially in

community, even as people are at various stag-

es of grief, they know that they’re not alone,

that there is much for which to give thanks.

With our national day of Thanksgiv-

ing having become increasingly co-opted by

commercialism ( i.e., Black Friday which now

starts on Thanksgiving Thursday), it may be that

we come closest to understanding what giving

thanks is about on All Saints’ Sunday. So…give

thanks, and find joy in the beauty of November!

~Pastor Warren Geier

Quilting Group

Toni’s quilters group will continue

making quilts for Lutheran World

Relief and for the Annual

Holiday Bazaar and Quilt sale in

November, however they will be at

Sherry Robinson’s home. Also keep in

mind that the quilters could always use

supplies: cotton or cotton/polyester

sheets that are at least full size, fabric,

and poly-cotton blend thread.

Bulletins for the month of

November are sponsored by Mary Lou

Behrens in honor of Clayton Jr., Deb-

bie, Eric, Bambi & Kim’s birthdays.

Happy Birthday Everyone!

In 2019, Emanuel will celebrate 125

years of ministry! We invite all cur-

rent and former members to be a part

of the celebration.

If you have moved from the area or

are out of touch with Emanuel, please

send us your mailing address via

Facebook or e-mail

([email protected]) so that we can

send more information on what will

happen during our

anniversary year. If your children

were baptized, confirmed or married

at Emanuel, send their addresses, too!

We are now putting together a cook-

book/biography and invite all former

and current members to submit

recipes, a picture, and a short

remembrance of your time at Emanu-

el. Send via e-mail or hard copy to

Emanuel Lutheran Church

P.O, Box 160, Skandia, MI 49885.

Thank you to all who helped

make our pie social a success.

We appreciate your time and

effort making these delicious

pies. We raised $407.50

Please Note:

Pastor Geier will be on vacation from

November 6-17th. He will have Pas-

tors Dave Van Kley and Allan Johnson

providing emergency take his place in

case of pastoral emergencies.

Major changes included

adding Ministry with Sen-

Trunk or Treating

Thank you Jolene, Toni, Sarah, Roger, Freddy, and Fred for all your help with set-

up/clean-up and working at Trunk or Treating. Thanks too to those who came and

hosted a trunk ... Skandia Firemen, Lions Club, Lioness Club, Bergdahls, Kimballs,

Beauchamps, and Kevin Downs. Thank you Thrivent for the grant that helped us

host this event. We sure could not have had this fun-filled event for our communi-

ty youth without all of you! Every year we get more Trunk or Treaters - we had

about 100 children this year. Sure would be nice if we could get more "trunks" to

treat the children next year. You really should think about coming up and setting

up a trunk next year. It is really a lot of fun to see those kids smiling and having fun

-- as you can see from these pictures.

If being outside doesn't do it for you with our UP Halloween weather ... you can

always hand out your treats in the decorated fellowship hall.
