God’s grace welcomes you, no matter who you are or where you are from—and so do we. We

believe that Jesus Christ is the true Savior of all people. By his perfect life, innocent death, and

triumphant resurrection he saves all lost sinners even without our help. Jesus Christ makes us

special people, right with God and ready for life! We learn this from the Bible, God’s authentic

message of grace and guidance for us. Whether you are a first time visitor or a returning guest,

we are delighted to share our worship with you. You are always welcome here. If there is

anything we can do to make your visit more comfortable, please let us know. The restrooms

are located down the hall opposite the sanctuary, and there is also a cry room with toys across

from the coat racks. Please worship with us again soon!

Divine Service II

The Day Is Surely Drawing Near Christian Worship 207, stanzas 5 and 6

1 The name of the triune God and the sign of the cross remind worshipers of their baptisms.

2 “The use of the keys is that special power and right which Christ gave to his church on earth: to forgive the sins of penitent sinners” (The Small Catechism, First: What is the use of the keys?). See John 20:21-23.

P: In the name of the Father and of the Son 9 and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen.

Please stand.

P: Dear friends, let us approach God with a true heart and confess our sins, asking him in

the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to forgive us. C: Lord of life, I confess that I am by nature dead in sin. For faithless worrying and selfish pride, For sins of habit and sins of choice, For the evil I have done and the good I have failed to do, You should cast me away from your presence forever. O Lord, I am sorry for my sins. Forgive me, for Jesus’ sake.

P: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. In his great mercy, God made us

alive in Christ even when we were dead in our sins. Hear the word of Christ through his called servant:

I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son 9 and of the Holy

Spirit. C: Amen.

Kyrie

P: In peace, let us pray to the Lord. For the well-being of all people everywhere, that they may receive from you all they

need to sustain body and life, hear our prayer, O Lord. C: Lord, have mercy. P: For the spread of your life-giving gospel throughout the world, that all who are lost in

sin may be brought to faith in you, hear our prayer, O Christ. C: Christ, have mercy. P: For patience and perseverance in this life, that we may not lose the hope of heaven as

we await your return, hear our prayer, O Lord. C: Lord, have mercy. P: Lord of life, live in us that we may live for you. C: Amen.

3 Kyrie is the Greek word for Lord. The expression “Lord, have mercy” is one of the oldest worship responses in the Christian church. See Mark 10:47.

Please be seated.

P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you.

P: Let us pray: Almighty God and Savior, you have set the final day and hour when we shall be

delivered from this world of sin and death. Keep us ever watchful for the coming of your Son that we may sit with him and all your holy ones at the marriage feast in heaven; through your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

4 Christians praise God by proclaiming the great things he has done to accomplish our rescue from sin. “Glory to God in the Highest” has been a Christian song of worship since the fourth century. See Luke 2:14.

5 This greeting has deep roots in Christian worship and marks the beginning of the Word section and the Sacrament section (page 11) of the service.

Gloria in Excelsis

Sung to the tune CW 5, “As Angels Joyed with One Accord.”

1: All glory be to God on high! 2: Our grateful thanks to you we bring, Your name, O Lord, we glorify; For your great glory, heav’nly King, We praise you for your peace and grace, For all, O Father, you have done Your favor toward our fallen race. Through Jesus Christ, your only Son. 3: O Lamb of God, to you we pray. 4: You, Christ, are holy—Lord alone; You take all human sin away. The Father’s glory you made known. Have mercy, Lord; receive our prayer; We by your Spirit sing again: From God’s right hand, your mercy share. “All glory be to God!” Amen.

Daniel 12:1-3

“At that time shall arise Michael, the great prince who has charge of your people. And there shall be a time of trouble, such as never has been since there was a nation till that time. But at that time your people shall be delivered, everyone whose name shall be found written in the book. 2 And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. 3 And those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the sky above; and those who turn many to righteousness, like the stars forever and ever.

Psalm 118:14, 17-24 The Psalm is spoken responsively. The pastor will speak the first line, and the congregation responds with the line(s) in bold print.

14 The Lord is my strength and my song; he has become my salvation. 17 I shall not die, but I shall live,

and recount the deeds of the Lord. 18 The Lord has disciplined me severely,

but he has not given me over to death. 19 Open to me the gates of righteousness,

that I may enter through them and give thanks to the Lord.

20 This is the gate of the Lord; the righteous shall enter through it.

21 I thank you that you have answered me and have become my salvation.

22 The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.

23 This is the Lord’s doing; it is marvelous in our eyes.

24 This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.

1 Thessalonians 4:13-18

13 But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. 14 For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep. 15 For this we declare to you by a word from the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep. 16 For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord. 18 Therefore encourage one another with these words.

(Revelation 7:15a) P: Alleluia. They are before the throne of God and serve him day and night in his temple.

Alleluia. Please stand for the reading of the Gospel.6

Mark 13:24-27 P: The Gospel according to Mark chapter 13. C: Glory be to you, O Lord!

24 “But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, 25 and the stars will be falling from heaven, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken. 26 And then they will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory. 27 And then he will send out the angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of heaven.

P: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise be to you, O Christ!

Please be seated.

6 The congregation stands and speaks words of acclamation out of respect for the words of Christ, our King.

Wake, Awake, for Night Is Flying Christian Worship 206

Psalm 118:14, 17-24

Please stand.

C: We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became fully human.

7 The Hymn of the Day is assigned to this day because of its rich content and connection to the day’s Gospel.

8 Public confession is faith’s response to God’s saving Word. Christians composed the Nicene Creed in the fourth century to defend the Bible’s teachings that both Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit are true God, equal to the Father in one eternal, undivided Trinity.

9 The original text here reads “catholic,” a word meaning “universal.” The Church consists of all believers in heaven and on earth, of every time in history.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy Christian9 and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Page 10: The Lord Has Become My Salvation Time 3 - Saint… · We believe in one Lord, Jesus hrist, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true

P: Lord of eternity and King of saints, all the heavens adore you. Saints and angels sing

before you. C: We too join them to praise your majesty. P: You clothe us with garments of splendor. You bless us with grace and mercy in this life

and eternal glory forever. What undeserved love you show us! C: We thank you, Lord, that you have made us your saints. P: Encourage us by your gracious promises. Forgive our failures to live as you desire.

Strengthen the faith of all who are weak and wandering. C: Give us power to live as your faithful people. P: Your saints will triumph forever in new heavens and a new earth. The sound of weeping

and crying will be heard no more. We anticipate with joy an eternity of perfect fellowship with you.

C: Be with us as we work and witness for Christ, so that many more people can join us

before your throne.

Special prayers and intercessions may follow.

P: Hear us, Lord, as we bring you our private petitions.

Silent prayer.

P: Lord of life, the day is coming when you will come down from heaven with the voice of

the archangel and the trumpet call of God. On that glorious day, the saints triumphant will rise in bright array, clothed in your perfect righteousness.

C: Give us strength until that day when we will share fully in the glory of our Lord Jesus

Christ. Amen.

11 Sanctus means “holy.” Used possibly as early as the second century, this canticle was in wide use among Christians in worship by the fourteenth century.

10 The words of the Preface mark the beginning of the Sacrament section of the service and lift the worshipers’ hearts in praise. The opening sentences are among the oldest in the Christian liturgy.

P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Lift up your hearts. C: We lift them up to the Lord. P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C: It is good and right so to do. P: It is truly good and right that we should at all times and in all places give you thanks, O

Lord, holy Father, almighty and everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who will soon come again in glory to deliver us forever from this present evil age. Therefore with all the saints on earth and hosts of heaven, we praise your holy name and join their glorious song:

Sanctus

Sung to the tune of CW 19, “O Lord, How Shall I Meet You.” 1: O holy, holy, holy 2: Hosanna in the highest! Lord God of pow’r and might, How truly blest is he Your glory, earth and heaven Who in God’s name is coming In countless ways recite. To set his people free! Hosanna! Come and save us, He comes to bring salvation Lord God of hosts on high, And with his blood outpoured, And in your grace and mercy Deliver us from bondage— Receive our fervent cry. Hosanna, mighty Lord!

Page 12: The Lord Has Become My Salvation Time 3 - Saint… · We believe in one Lord, Jesus hrist, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true

P: Blessed are you, O Lord of heaven and earth. We praise and thank you for sending your

Son, Jesus Christ, and we remember the great acts of love through which he has ransomed us from sin, death, and the devil’s power.

By his incarnation, he became one with us. By his perfect life, he fulfilled your holy will. By his innocent death, he overcame hell. By his rising from the grave, he opened heaven. Invited by your grace and instructed by your Word, we approach your table with

repentant and joyful hearts. Strengthen us through Christ’s body and blood, and preserve us in the true faith until we feast with him and all his ransomed people in glory everlasting.

C: Amen.

Matthew 6:9-13

C: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

12 Jesus took bread and gave thanks (Matthew 26:26).

13 As he speaks the Words of Institution, the minister both proclaims the words of Jesus to the congregation and sets apart the bread and wine for the Lord’s use. The sign of the cross reminds us of Christ’s death. See Matthew 26:26-28 and 1 Corinthians 11:24,25.

Page 13: The Lord Has Become My Salvation Time 3 - Saint… · We believe in one Lord, Jesus hrist, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true

P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given

thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my 9 body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”

Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you;

this is my 9 blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.”

The peace of the Lord be with you always. C: Amen.

Agnus Dei

14 Jesus is God’s Lamb (Agnus Dei), who was offered as a sacrifice for sin once for all. See John 1:29.

Grace Lutheran Church is a member of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod. Our Church and our Church body practice member communion. Out of respect for our beliefs we please ask that non-members not come forward to receive communion. If you have questions about what Scripture teaches concerning participation in the Lord’s Supper, please speak with the Pastor before or after the service.

Nunc Dimittis

Sung to the tune CW 614, “Sing to the Lord of Harvest.”

Page 15: The Lord Has Become My Salvation Time 3 - Saint… · We believe in one Lord, Jesus hrist, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true

15 The Scriptures teach that the celebration of the Lord’s Supper connects us intimately with Christ and with one another as Christians who are united around a common confession of faith.

16 The Nunc Dimittis (“Now dismiss”) is also known as the “Song of Simeon.” Through God’s Word and Sacrament, we have seen Jesus Christ, and like Simeon we find divine peace and comfort through faith in the Savior. See Luke 2:29-32.

P: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look on you with favor and 9 give you peace. C: Amen. Please be seated.

Jerusalem the Golden Christian Worship 728 The closing hymn is printed on the next page.

17 The blessing of Aaron has been spoken over God’s people for over 3,500 years. The Lord said, “So they will put my name on [them], and I will bless them” (Numbers 6:24-27).

P: We give you thanks, O Lord, for the foretaste of the heavenly banquet that you have

given us to eat and to drink in this sacrament. Through this gift you have fed our faith, nourished our hope, and strengthened our love. By your Spirit help us to live as your holy people until that day when you will receive us as your guests at the wedding supper of the Lamb, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.
