Pastor’s Letter

November 16/17 Dear Parish Family, Sometimes things work out even better than we plan. Last weekend we had a wonderful Veterans Day celebration at our 9:30 Mass. Almost 30 men and women joined us for Mass. They were SHJM parishioners and members of other communities in town who all came together for this celebration. We planned an entrance procession with honor guard and a special blessing and song at the homily. We planned to sing God Bless America at end of Mass but we never actually planned for the Veterans to walk out in procession. But they did and here is where the little miracle took place. As the veterans came to the back of church they walked outside and ended up in a kind of receiving line. Just about every person leaving Mass that day shook hands and said thank you to those in the ad hoc receiving line. It was wonderful to see the smiles on the faces of these men and women as they received a thank you from our parish family. We could not have planned it better if we tried! Some even had tears in their eyes. It is a wonderful thing to be appreciated. It is a wonderful thing to say thanks! As we come near to Thanksgiving, it is good for us to remember that blessings are not things. They are certainly not our possessions; nor is the meaning of life trying to collect them. Blessings are actually something that we give away. The first blessing is described in the Book of Genesis. After each act of creation, God looks at what has been created and sees that it is good. God speaks a word of blessing. God affirms the goodness of what has been created. Another word for blessing is benediction — literally speaking a good word — and it describes someone affirming the goodness that they see. Sometimes we speak this way. We talk about a person asking their parents’ blessing on a marriage or a new direction in life. But far too often we take the power of blessing for granted. We forget the power of praise and affirmation. Last month I read of a survey that asked young people what they like to hear from the “coaches” on the sidelines of their sport fields. The winner: “I love to watch you play!” Nothing about winning. Nothing about skill. Just a simple affirmation — I love to watch you play. Last weekend the veterans received our blessing. They did so at Mass in the prayers that were said over them. But even more so they received it in the warm handshakes and words of gratitude spoken to them after Mass. Thanksgiving is coming. Don’t forget to give someone your blessing! Sincerely yours in Christ,

Rev. Michael A. Vetrano

year?

We are preparing a wonderful Christmas Pageant on Wednesday, December 18th, at 7 PM we even

have live animals coming!

Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving Day Mass Join us Thursday, November 28th, at 10 AM to celebrate Thanksgiving

What could be better than to begin Thanksgiving day with a prayer of thanks to God! It is also a day to be grateful for our community. Just 2 years ago on November 21, 2011, our parish was honored by Pope Benedict as Rockville Centers first Basilica. I invite you to come to this special mass, to bring your family and friends, and to bring a gift for our food pantry. I also invite you to bring something from your table to bless. In this way you can unite your Thanksgiving table with the altar of thanksgiving.

Snowbirds! Please Don’t Forget Us

No doubt this is a great time to get away to warmer places for the winter or even just a few weeks. Please remember that your parish is alive and active all year round, and that these are some of the most expensive months for us! In winter our fuel bills alone are over $5000 a month — that is al-most one whole collection just for heat.

So please don’t forget us when you are gone. Keeping up a weekly pattern of sup-port will keep our parish financially healthy. Enjoy your time away and remember that you can read our weekly bulletin at www.shjmbasilica.org.

BOOK OF REMEMBRANCE

November is the Month of the Holy Souls. Our church has the

custom of giving a place of honor to a book in which parishioners write the

names of their deceased. We recall and pray for our beloved dead, trusting in God's eternal love

and mercy to welcome them into the glory of heaven.

We invite you to share this time of remembrance by writing in the book the names of

those friends and loved ones who have fallen asleep in Christ. The book will be conveniently

located in the church's center aisle.

By María Dolores Martínez from Liturgia y Canción 2010, © 2010, OCP. Sharing the Gospel When others are mean to you, God tells you what to say and what to do to keep safe. God loves you and never leaves you helpless. God gives you many people to love you and care for you. Someone down the street may not invite you to a party, but God never leaves you out. He invites you to spend time with him today and to live with him forever in heaven. Prayer Lord, thank you for my loving family and friends. Something to Draw Draw family and friends at your birthday party with a cake, balloons, and gifts. Mission for the Week I will spend time with God thanking him for loving me.
