For 4 hours recently, dozens ofhappy HB people brought theirsensitive documents to be

shredded before their eyes at a fabulousnew public event at SummerLane Park.

“It’s a wonderful service and we re-ally appreciate it,” said Rick Blake, whobrought old bills and other financial in-formation to be destroyed at the RealtorBarbara Delgleize-sponsored event.

“As a Realtor, I know that sensitivedocuments need to be shredded and Ithought it would help the community tohave one at the park,” said Delgleize, who’s also Chairperson of the HB Planning Com-mission. Shehired “GoGreen MobileS h r e d d i n g , ”whose trucksallow people towatch a monitorand actually seetheir documentsbeing shredded.

“ Wi t h i n -creased concernover IdentityTheft, this is aterrific idea,” said Bill Gordon, whobrought two boxes full of credit information, tax records, loan docu-ments, cancelled checks and medicalrecords to the truck. Jason Spencer andother shredding company personnel unloaded the documents in bins thatthen made their way up the truck’s railsystem and into the shredder. TheirShredfast System can shred up to 3 tonsor 6,000 pounds of material an hour.

Some people brought CDs, videotapes, film, X-Rays and other items thatalso were shredded by the friendly com-pany (gogreenmobileshredding.com),whose vehicles are the greenest diesel

trucks available. Their shredding system uses the most advanced technol-ogy, reducing the amount of energyconsumed and waste produced. Theshredded paper and plastic are unloadedat a certified recycling paper.

“It’s funny that our society is tryingto go more and more paperless but weseem to end up with more paper thanever before,” said Alice Walker. “Having a Neighborhood Shred is afantastic idea and a great way to eliminate no longer necessary paperdocuments in a secure manner!”

People walking their dogs broughtgrocery bagsfull of stubs ands t a t e m e n t s ;pickup trucksb r o u g h tgarbage cansfull of taxrecords andpeople drivingby the parkrushed home togather andbring items thatneeded to beshredded.

The popular happening was a win, not only for the appreciative participants but also one of the city’sbest non-profits.

Barbara, and her helper, daughterMegan Delgleize, asked donors to makea donation to benefit the Boys and GirlsClub of Huntington Beach. They collected checks and money for the clubto help our local kids. Because of thecontinuous flow of people at the shreddrive, Barbara is considering makingthis an annual event. Of course, relationships with one’s mother iscomplicated and can't be watered down togood or bad or roses or daisies. Pretty muchall mother-child relationships have some con-flict built into them, some more than others.

This was my first Mother's Day without Mom. Iwas with my Mom at our family house for my first20 or so years. Then for me, off to college, the MarineCorps, Marriage and a new life in California. Obviously, any day that holds memories — such as abirthday, holiday or anniversary — can be painful, and can remain painful for years and I am sure it willbe for me. After a 20 year or so hiatus with me visit-ing home (Rhode Island), at least once a year for 20years, then we convinced Mom to come to Hunting-ton Beach to visit. Twenty years later she went backto Rhode Island to live out the remainder of her life.

The best of times, the not so best of times ...but shewas here and here with my children and my childrenwith her. There were precious moments that will lastforever. She was indispensable with the raising of mykids all the way through their respective marriagesand beyond. There was only one Phyllis. My kidsnever knew my Dad. He died when I was 17. But theyknew and loved Mike, my Mom's second husband, second life.

On Mother’s Day, everyone else is focused on theirmothers. So the feeling of missing your mother —and feeling like you are the only one in the worldwithout a mother — can intensify these feelings ofloss. Though Mother’s Day is a "Hallmark Holiday,"it still is powerful. No matter how old you are, losinga parent is a regressive experience that makes peoplefeel young, childlike and vulnerable.

So it’s OK to understand that Mother’s Day isn't always happy. Acknowledge that you are sad andmiss your mother. There’s no need to pretend it is not

a melancholy time for you.Nearly everyone whose motheris absent feels bereft.

My day started out early with a phone call from myson..."Dad, I'm sure you feel bad today..." I did notexpect to start this day that way...it was beautiful. Mydaughter is an outrageously dedicated, hard-workingMother to a 5 years year old and a set of 2 and a halfyear old twins. She has her Mom and her Mother-inlaw. We ended the day with a text message saying shehad a wonderful day...I started my day and ended myday with my children...almost as if it were planned.

So, it was 8:30 am and I called a lady friend whohad also lost her Mom this year. Fortunately forme...she had no plans so I met her after Church andwe had a two hour lunch...somewhat reminiscing ofour Mom's, our kids and life.

Even as you acknowledge that nothing and nobodycan replace your mother my role as a parent helpedme focus on the joy of having my own children. Celebrating the day was very gratifying.

Had I not reached out and just wandered in my ownself pity...this would have been a very long and unhappy day. Church was a great experience that day.The Priest spend most of his homily talking about hisMom, their universal role, etc. It gave me a meaningfulopportunity to reflect on Phyllis...her 90 years of life, her absolute love for my brother and I and especiallyall the grand kids.

Did sorrow turn into joy...not necessarily...but Imade a giant leap in that direction today...mostly because I did not stay home, did not feel sorry for myself. I was not the victim...Mom was no longerhere in person but her memory was like a room fullof happy people smiling, laughing and enjoying thelife we have.

I have to end with this true 1st Motherless Day's ex-

perience. I woke up that morning...got in the showerand the U-shaped clasp that holds the shower headbroke. Used the commode and I noticed that the sealat the bottom of the toilet was surrounded by water. After lunch with my friend...I was driving along andheard a cracking sound...looked down and the glasslens to my Iphone completely crystallized. ThankGod it all happened in three's or I would still be wor-rying on what Mom was thinking...it made me realizethat it was her first Mother's Day without us as well.

Tips for Mother’s Day ...without mom!

How to use the holiday as a time to heal —

not to grieve especially your first

They say if you email this toten people, you stand a chanceof saving one life. Will you sendthis along?

Blood Clots/Stroke – TheyNow Have a Fourth Indicator,the Tongue

I will continue to talk aboutthis every time it comes around!

STROKE: Remember the 1stThree Letters..... S. T. R.

STROKE IDENTIFICATION:

During a BBQ, a womanstumbled and took a little fall -she assured everyone that she was fine(they offered to call paramedics) ...shesaid she had just tripped over a brickbecause of her new shoes.

They got her cleaned up and got hera new plate of food. While she appeared a bit shaken up, Jane wentabout enjoying herself the rest of the evening.

Jane's husband called later tellingeveryone that his wife had been takento the hospital - (at 6:00 pm Janepassed away.) She had suffered a strokeat the BBQ. Had they known how toidentify the signs of a stroke, perhapsJane would be with us today. Somedon't die. They end up in a helpless, hopeless condition instead.

It only takes a minute to readthis.

A neurologist says that if hecan get to a stroke victimwithin 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of astroke...totally. He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, andthen getting the patient medically cared for within 3hours, which is tough.

RECOGNIZING A STROKE

Thank God for the sense toremember the '3' steps, STR.Read and Learn!

Sometimes symptoms of astroke are difficult to identify.

Unfortunately, the lack of awarenessspells disaster. The stroke victim maysuffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize thesymptoms of a stroke.

Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking threesimple questions:

S *Ask the individual toSMILE.

T *Ask the person toTALK and SPEAK ASIMPLE SENTENCE(Coherently, i.e. It issunny out today.)

R*Ask him or her toRAISE BOTHARMS.

If he or she has trouble with ANYONE of these tasks, call emergencynumber immediately and describe thesymptoms to the dispatcher.

New Sign of a Stroke —

Stick out Your Tongue

NOTE: Another 'sign' of a stroke isthis: Ask the person to 'stick' out histongue. If the tongue is 'crooked', if itgoes to one side or the other that is alsoan indication of a stroke.

A cardiologist says if everyone whogets this e-mail sends it to 10 people;you can bet that at least one life will besaved.

I have done my part. Will you?

Change: a quick look at some core Economic indicators: EE

Page 5: The Local News — May 15, 2011

The Huffington Post's Harry Bradford has money on his mindand lots of it. He says..."No

longer dominated by Americans andEuropeans, the members of the world'sbillionaire club increasingly hail fromaround the globe, first and third worldcountries alike. And while some of themega-rich may spend more time onyachts than in their home countries, even billionaires have a place they callhome. It's just becoming increasinglydifficult to predict where that home is.

According to this year's annualWealth Report, published by KnightFrank and Citi Private Bank — ScorpioPartnership, a wealth management con-sultancy firm, also contributed — newbillionaires are increasingly likely to

come from emerging economies likeIndia and Russia, the latter of which increased its billionaire count by 30percent last year, according to Forbes. The world's total number of millionaireshas skyrocketed, too, increasing by 22percent from one year prior, when theglobal economy witnessed a drasticdrop in millionaires.

No country's elite, however, havebenefited more from last year's rebounding economy than China's, withthe country's tremendous economicgrowth raising the billionaire count by140 percent. At this rate, many economists expect China — ranked35th in Forbes' billionaires list as recently as 2005 — to soon claim thetitle of most billionaires in the world.

"That growth [in China] may bestrengthened," Scorpio Partnership director Stephen Wall wrote in the re-port, "by the range of wealth sourcesdriving economic growth."

Of all their thriving industries, the Internet technology sector has perhapstreated China's elites the best. And noone better represents that industry thanChina's richest man and Baidu searchengine founder Robin Li. Still, Chinesebillionaires will continue to face stiffcompetition from the U.S. in the future,as Facebook alone represents six ofAmerica's billionaires, including theyoungest billionaire in the world: 26year-old co-founder Dustin Moskovitz.

Stay AwayFrom DownedPower Lines

It’s not uncommon for trees and tree limbs to fall, especially during high winds, rain and other stormy conditions. This can cause power lines to fall as well. If you see a power line on the ground, stay far away and keep others away as well. Do not try to touch or remove it. That power line may still be energized and can be deadly to touch or go near.

Call 9-1-1 and report the situation immediately.

Also keep away from trees that have power lines going through them. When a power line touches a tree, the tree may also become energized.

For more information on electrical safety, visit SCE’s website at www.sce.com.

The organizations and their specialties:

m The Department of State works alongside the districtgovernor in the political advisory of the district. A currentproject is advising the construction of more AfghanistanNational Police posts throughout Garmsir.

m USAID works alongside the businesses in Garmsir, providing mentorship in economic and infrastructural development. Current projects include improvements onlocal irrigation systems and roads. They also provide sup-port in the construction of schools.

m The DFID representative mentors local leaders in gov-ernance, focusing on the health of the population. AlthoughBritish military operations in Garmsir ended in 2009, theUnited Kingdom Government kept a representative inGarmsir for the continuity of the development there.

m The AVIPA works alongside the local farmers to develop cooperatives to build a more effective agriculturaleconomy. Farmers in each main area of the district arementored in the advantages of grouping together to buyseed and other supplies.

The battalion also has aU.S. Army representative, who mentors local judgesand prosecutors in the ruleof law.

All of these organizationswork together to create anautonomous society that isless vulnerable to insurgents.

“We’re not going to behere forever, but we’re notabout to abandon the peopleof Garmsir,” Malkasian

said. “We want the Afghan people to be able to take over. That’s why I’m here, advising the development of the government, so it can better handle all the complex issuesthat happen in Garmisr.”

According to Malkasian, the first community councilwas held in Garmsir in March of 2009. Last year, only 18council members regularly attended. Now, more councilmembers have been elected, and the entire district is represented during community council meetings.

Malkasian also noted security improvements. When hearrived, more than a year and a half ago, he couldn’t go 10kilometers south of Forward Operating Base Delhi withoutrunning the risk of an IED or firefight. Now, he can go tosouthernmost part of the district in relative safety.

“When you’re here, you feel like part of somethinglarger,” Malkasian said. “The accomplishments in the areaare a sign of how civilian and military efforts have complimented each other. It’s been amazing to see how oureffort overall has gone from area security to improvinggovernance. I know it wouldn’t have been possible withoutour organizations and the military working together.” The Most Billionaires

Two sportsleagues – theNFL and MLB –engaged in grand-standing last

week by announcing proposals designed to curryfavor with themedia and fansbut had littlechance of everbecoming reality.

The NFL needsall the favorablepublicity it canget, having takenit on the chin atevery turn in itsongoing labor dispute with theplayers. So theleague announcedthat if the lockoutis lifted, as theplayers contend incourt it should be,it was consideringturning theleague’s drug testing proceduresover to the WorldA n t i - D o p i n gAgency (WADA).

No professionalsports league in this country has handed the reins of drug testing over to WADA, and for good reasons. Drug testing for professional sportsleagues is mostly a sham, designed to keep Congress and the media off their backs. In contrast,WADA takes drug testing seriously, testing in andout of season, frequently and without notice, and requiring athletes to let them know of their exact location months in advance.

There’s no telling how many NFL players usesubstances – including HGH – the league doesn’ttest for, but WADA does. And the WADA penalties

are much more onerous than those agreed to in theNFL Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), beginning with a one year suspension for a first violation under WADA rules, versus four gamesunder the CBA. With WADA in charge of drug testing, the NFL talent level would sink to the

level of the CFL or the UFL.

Neither the owners nor the players wants drug testing, at least not the kind that works. TheNFL’s threat to turn drug testing over to WADA is mere posturing, something the players need not take seriously.

MLB also made headlines by suggesting thatCommissioner Bud Selig wants the authority to impose discipline on players who are involved inalcohol related incidents. Abusing alcohol, then getting behind the wheel of a vehicle and/or engag-ing in violence, is definitely a problem in MLB.

Six MLB players have been cited for driving under the influence since January. But alcoholabuse is also a problem in other sports as well as in society in general.

Unfortunately for Selig, the MLBPA hasn’t decertified and there’sno way the union isgoing to hand overdiscipline authority tothe commissioner. IfSelig attempts to uni-laterally imposesanctions, the unionwill surely file agrievance - andalmost certainly win, creating hard feelings betweenplayers and manage-ment that could adversely impactcurrent negotiationson the next CBA.

WADA in controlof NFL drug testing? Bud Seligthe discipline czarof MLB players?Don’t count on either happeningany time soon. Recent statements

by the NFL and MLB may have played well in thepress, but the bottom line is both leagues weremerely grandstanding.

A1920's instructional onunderground forts got us thinking...is a sub-

ground hang-out even possible?

Nikki Pepper reports..."Overon Wired, one industrious blogger discovered a 1929"Modern Mechanics" featuringsurprisingly detailed images andinstructions on building an underground fort — completewith measurements. This ulti-mate DIY got us thinking: Couldsomeone really pull this off?Consider...

The Underground Fort's

Foundation

Digging the hole is basicallylike digging a foundation for ahouse. Only in this case, the holewill actually be your house. Atarp or water-proof material is

needed for the flooring and plywood is used to support the "walls."

The Underground Fort's Roof

While some fort instructionssay to use plywood for this partof the structure, the fort in this illustration uses tar paper.

The Underground Fort's

Appliances

Candles and lanterns can easilyilluminate your undergroundhang-out. Just be sure to containthe flames. Just think of it asbeing in a tent. The stove situation is a bit more complicated though. Certainlyyou won't be installing a state-of-the-art range and hood. Butyou can contain a brick or stonefire. And— most importantly—make sure to have an exhaust!

The Underground Fort's Safety

Safety is the main issue wethought of when seeing this un-derground habitat. After all, access in through long, narrowtunnels. And depending on theground your working with, hazards could be high. Whilewe're pretty sure a savvy DIYercan make this happen, we're stillrolling out the caution tape. Although, tree forts leave youhanging on a limb, so which ∏option is less risky?

OK, this is all sounding a littleshaky to us. Unless you've got aprofessional willing to help orconsult, we'd advise stickingwith your basement or attic as ahideout — or copy this writer'shusband and take up a new "mancave" apartment!"

California is experienc-ing an increase inmeasles cases, likely

due to international travel orexposure to others who haverecently traveled to Europe,Asia and Africa where thereare outbreaks of this highlycontagious disease.

“California, like the restof the nation and, indeed, the world, is experiencingan increase in measles casesthat is entirely preventablewith immunization,” saidDr. Gilberto Chávez, deputydirector of the Center for Infectious Diseases at theCalifornia Department ofPublic Health. “Anyonewho will be traveling or isexpecting contact with recent international travel-ers should confirm that theirvaccinations are up-to-date.”

Since April, seven newcases of measles were reported in California, bringing thestatewide total to 13 for this year. Lastyear 27 cases of measles were reported. In 2009, only nine cases were reported.Of the cases reported for this year, three were reported in MendocinoCounty and two in Santa Clara County.Single cases have been reported inAlameda, Orange, Sacramento, SanBenito, San Diego, San Mateo,Sonoma and Stanislaus counties.

Federal officials report a nationwideincrease in measles cases. Nearly all ofthe affected individuals traveled to Europe, Asia or Africa, or had contactwith international travelers. Currently, outbreaks of measles are occurring inmany European countries, as well asIndia and the Philippines. In France, more than 9,000 measles cases havebeen reported in the last six months, including fatal cases and cases withneurological complications.

“Because measles vaccination usually starts at 12 to 15 months of age, infants 6 months or older traveling internationally may need an early vaccine dose before departure,” addedChávez. “Parents should consult with

their health care provider to ensure infants and children are properly immunized.”

Measles is a highly infectious disease that typically causes a fever, runny nose, cough, sore eyes and a redrash all over the body. A person withmeasles can be contagious for up tofour days before and four days after theonset of rash. Even in previouslyhealthy children, measles can be a serious illness requiring hospitaliza-tion. As many as one out of every 20children with measles gets pneumonia.About one child in every 1,000 whogets measles will develop encephalitis-- an inflammation of the brain that canlead to convulsions, deafness or braindamage. For every 1,000 children whobecome ill with measles, one or twowill die from the disease.

Travelers who develop symptomsof measles should call their healthcare provider before going to ahealthcare facility so that appropriatesteps can be taken to protect otherpatients from measles.

Dear Earth Talk:

How healthy is soy?I heard that, despite its

healthy image, most soy is grown using chemicals likeother crops and is even being genetically modified.

- D. Frinka, Syracuse, NY

Foodproductsmadewithsoyhaveenjoyedgreatpopularity in the U.S. andelsewhereinrecentyears.Twodecadesago,Americansspent$300 million a year on soyfoodproducts;todaywespendover$4billion.Moreandmoreadultsaresubstitutingsoy—agreat source of protein—formeat, while a quarter of allbaby formula contains soyinsteadofmilk.Manyschoollunch programs nationwidehaveaddedsoy-basedveggieburgerstotheirmenus,ashavecountless restaurants, includ-ingdinersandfastfoodchains.

And there are hundreds ofother edible uses of thelegume, whichnowvieswithcornforthetitleofAmerica'smostpopularagriculturalcrop. The U.S. Food and DrugAdministrationpromotestheinclu-sionof soy into other foods to cut downonheartattack risk. Clinical studies have shown that soycan also lower the risk for certain types of breastandprostatecancer.

Buttheremaybeadarksidetosoy’spopularityandabundance.“Manyofsoy’shealthbenefitshavebeen

linkedtoisoflavones—plantcompoundsthatmimicestrogen,”reportsLindseyKonkelinEnvironmentalHealth News. “But animal studies suggest thateatinglargeamountsofthoseestrogeniccompoundsmightreducefertilityinwomen, triggerprematurepuberty and disrupt development of fetuses andchildren.” But before you dump out all your soyfoods, notethattheoperativephrasehereis“large

amounts” which, in laboratoryscience, can mean amountssubstantially above what onewouldconsumeinreallife.

Alsoatissueisthatupwardsof 90 percent of the U.S.soybeancropisgrownusinggenetically modified (GM)seeds sold by Monsanto. These have been engineeredtowithstandrepeateddousingwiththeherbicide, glyphosate(also sold byMonsanto andmarketed as RoundUp).According to the nonprofitNonGMOProject, thisallowssoybeanfarmerstorepeatedlyspray their fields withRoundUp to kill all weeds(and other nearby plant life)exceptforthesoybeanplantstheyaregrowing.

The U.S. government per-mitsthesaleandconsumption

ofGMfoods, butmanyconsumersaren’tsosureit’sOKtoeatthem—givennotonlythegenetictinkeringbutalsotheexposuretosomuchglyphosate.Duetothese concerns, the European Union has had amoratoriumonGMcropsofallkindssince1998.

The fact that genetically modified soy may bepresentinasmuchas70percentofallfoodproductsfoundinU.S.supermarketsmeansthatavastmajorityofAmericansmaybeputtingalotofGMsoyintotheir systems every day.And not just directly viacereals,breadsandpasta:Some98percentoftheU.S.soybean crop is fed to livestock, so consumers ofmeat, eggs and dairy are indirectly ingesting theproductsofscientifictinkeringwithunknownimpli-cationsforhumanhealth.

Tomatoesarefarandawaythemostpopular vegetable grownby homegardeners.Whocan resist thevast

arrayofsizes,shapes,colors,andflavorsofhybridandheirloomtomatovarieties?Plus,there'snothinglikewalkingthroughyourgardenandmunchingonyourownhomegrownfruitsinthemiddleofsummer.

Here's a step-by-step guide to

growing tomatoes.

1.Select the Variety - There arehundreds of hybrid and heirloomtomatovarietiestochoosefrom.Ingeneral, hybrid varieties are more uniform, vigorous, anddiseaseresistant.Theygrowwell almost anywhere in the country.Heirloomvarieties offermore variety offruitshapes,color,andflavor,butsome-timesareonlyregionallyadapted.It'sbesttogrowsomeofeach,tryingnewvarietieseachyeartoseewhichgrowbestinyourclimate. For containers, choose dwarfvarietiesordeterminatevarieties.Indeter-minatevarietieswillgrowuntiltheweather,insects,diseases,oryoustopthem.Theyrequirethemostsupportbutwillproducethemostfruit.Forkids,growcherrytoma-toesforasweetandplentifultreat.

2.StartSeedsEarlyIndoors-Unlessyou'rebuyingtransplantsatthelocalgarden center, you'll need to start yourtomatoseedsindoors6to8weeksbeforethelastfrostdateinyourarea.

3.RaiseandWarmtheSoil-Onallbutsandysoils,create8-to10-inchtallraisedbedstogrowyourtomatoes.Twoweeksbeforetransplantingoutdoors,cover the beds with red plasticmulch. The color red increasestomatoyieldsbyupto20percent.Plusitwarmsthesoil,conservessoilmoisture,andpreventsweedsfrom growing. In extremesouthernareas,usestrawmulchorwhiteplasticinsteadofredplastictokeepthesoilfromoverheating.Ifusingdropirrigationorsoakerhosestowateryourplants,laythesehosesundertheplasticmulchbeforelayingitdown.

4.Plant - Cut holes in the plasticmulchandplanttomatoes2-to3-feet apart in the raised beds. If yourseedlingsaretallandleggy, burythestemtothefirstsetoftrueleaves.Tomatoeshavetheabilitytorootalongthestem;deeplysetplants will be more productive. Incontainers,mix3partspottingsoilwith1part compost and plant one tomato per5-gallonsizedcontainer.

5.Keep 'em Up - Indeterminatetomatoes can grow to be hugeplants.Plantstrellisedoffthegroundaremoreproductiveandhavelessdiseaseandinsectproblemsonthefruitsthanplantsleftto lie on the ground. Use homemade orcommercialtomatocages, ladders, orstakesto train them off the ground. Dwarfvarieties don't need support, but

determinatevarieties dobenefit frombeingtrellised.

6.Fe r t i l -ize,Waterand Weed - Keepplants well watered,especiallywhenfruitisforming.Ifthesoilmoisturefluctuatestoomuch,yourfruitsmaydevelopblossomendrot(therottingofthestemendofthefruit).Ifyouhaven'tusedplasticmulch,considermulchingwithstrawtokeepthesoilevenlymoist.Mulchalsopreventsweedsfromgrowing.Fertilizemonthlywithahandfulofanorganic5-5-5fertilizersprinkledaroundthebaseoftheplantstokeeptheplantsproductive.

7.Control Pests - Watch out for avariety of pests on your tomatoplants. Diseases such as wilt, virus, andblightcanalsocauseproblems.Selectdiseaseresistantvarieties.Resistantvarieties have the letters of the

disease they are resistant to after theirname, such asV and F for resistance toverticilliumandfusariumwilt.

8.Harvest-Themoreyoupick,themore fruits will be produced.Allowthefruitstoripenonthevinetotheirmaturecolorforthebestflavor.Collect mature fruits to can orfreeze, preservingtheflavoroftheharvestintothewinter.Ifyoustillhave many green fruits on yourplantattheendofsummer, pruneoff the top the plant and removenewly forming flowers and smallfruits. This will send more of theplant's energy into maturing the

remainingfruits.Harvestbeforeafrost.
