Songs Of Praise After another August month of

Marquee Markets the parish church

was the venue for the village’s eighth

Songs of Praise, to thank everyone for

their generosity and give thanks for

their success. This year’s very well

attended service, planned by Amy and

Norman Dennison, was themed around

the Church’s Christian year. The

service opened with the music group

playing ‘Come on and Celebrate’, after

which Norman welcomed all to the

service and Amy read the opening

prayer. The nine readings and ten

hymns which followed took the

congregation through the various

celebrations of the year, commencing

with Trinity and ending with

Pentecost. This was an opportunity to

recall and experience a journey

through the Christian year of the

Church in the space of just over one

hour. The readings opened with two

John Betjeman poems - the amusing

‘Diary of a Church mouse’ and the

rather more serious ‘Advent 1955’.

Lesley’s Evans’

reading from the

Queen’s Christmas

broadcast of 2008

a f f o r d e d a n

opportunity for the singing of the carol

‘In the bleak mid winter’ at a time of

year when it is not usually heard.

Readings from scriptures recalled

Epiphany, Ascension, and Pentecost

with contemporary writers being

represented by evangelist Derek Prime

and Anglican minister Susan Sayers.

There were also readings of work by

the late John Meade Faulkner, perhaps

better known as the author of the novel

‘Moonfleet’ and the late Piers

Warburton, one time MP of Mid

Cheshire. Hymns sung included ‘great

is Thy Faithfulness’, ‘Make way, make

way’ and ‘Praise my soul’. Following

the service cream teas were served in

the marquees outside the church.

Creatures great and small It was brilliant sunshine on Sunday

11th September for the ‘Pet Service’

on the field by the Village Hall. A

mixed bunch of pets, pet owners and

children gathered to thank God for

animals of all types, and to worship.

Howard Rowe, one of our Licensed lay

Ministers, led the proceedings, and

told a story from real life about a

missing tortoise, a bin lorry and a

thermal imaging camera! (ask

someone who was there for details).

Then we heard Jesus’ own story of a

lost sheep and the Good Shepherd who

searches out those who get lost and

welcomes them back.

We talked to the pets, the children and

the pet owners, who were very well

behaved (the pets and the children, that

is)! The service ended with chocolate

brownie cake and coffee. What a

marvellous way to spend a bright

Sunday morning!

Harvest Festival gifts for the Winchester Churches

Nightshelter

Following on from last year, we will again be providing paper carrier bags for

your October Harvest gifts. These can be used by individuals or groups. Please

do not feel obliged to fill the bag – just put in the items you would like to give.

Bags will be available for collection from the Parish Church and Methodist

Chapel. It is hoped that bags will also be located at The Crown, Post Office and

Martin’s Stores where single items may be dropped in.

A list will be enclosed in each bag indicating the items (all non-perishable) that

have been requested.

We hope you will be willing to participate in this project and thank you in

advance for your generosity and support.

Royal British Legion Poppy

Appeal 2016 This year has seen many 100th

anniversary services relating to the

First World War, none more

significant that the commemorations

for the start of the Battle of the

Somme. There has been much in the

news and of the television of this awful

battle and the scars are still to be seen

if you visit any of the battle fields

connected with this conflict which

lasted for months. However, there

have been many more conflicts that the

armed services and the auxiliary

services have also been engaged in and

more recently the terrible results of

deaths and injuries in both Iraq and

Afghanistan.

Whatever dangers they faced, these

me n a n d wo me n me t t h e m

unflinchingly, as they always have

done throughout history. The men

who endured the dangers and mud of

the Great War pledged their service to

a grateful nation. The PoWs in WWII

had vowed to fight to protect the

country and its interests. Veterans of

more recent conflicts such as the

Falklands, the Gulf, Bosnia, Iraq and

Afghanistan have

ma d e s i m i l a r

pledges.

The Royal British Legion was born as

a result of the World War I and it is the

Legion’s duty to be there to support

them for as long as it takes in any way

it can. And what of their families? It

is the Service Charities that are

providing and paying for the

accommodation and respite care for

families so that they can be near their

loved ones who are still being treated.

This year’s Annual Poppy Appeal

takes place from Saturday 29th

October to 12th November inclusive.

As usual, the willing volunteers in this

village will be coming around during

this time for the house to house

collection. We ask that you remember

those who suffer as a result of military

service and also the families of those

who have given their lives in the

service of this country and who need

our support.

Annual Remembrance Services This year’s Remembrance Day service will take place on Sunday 13th

November. There will be a short service at the Village War Memorial at

10.50am followed by a United Service in the Parish Church. A collection on

behalf of the Royal British Legion will be taken during the service at the War

Memorial.

There will also be a service on Remembrance Day Friday 11th November at

10.55am at the War Memorial, when the school will be joining with us.

Many of you have been very tolerant

of late delivery or no delivery of your

papers over the last year or more. I am

genuinely sorry for the distress and

disappointment this can and has

caused. I see delivery of papers as part

of a tradition, which allows young

people their first chance to earn their

own money and learn commitment to

work.

As many of you will know, the

suppliers often miss entire bundles of

papers off the delivery van and then

have to come again later in the

morning. That means the delivery

people who have to go to school or

college can only take the papers

already delivered and we then have to

go over the same route again for those

papers that came later. We, of course,

pay the same to the young people even

if papers are missing, as it’s not fair to

punish them for the supplier’s errors.

This summer, we have had three lucky

young people going on summer

holidays with their families. This

meant that there was only one

paperboy left to do all the local

deliveries by himself. This is likely to

be the case every summer with young

people going away during the school

and college holidays. I do enjoy the

occasional walk around our beautiful

village, which is just as well, as I often

deliver papers myself due to the

supplier’s errors, holidays or sickness.

However, Nick will be giving up the

rounds as he is going to University

next month and Heidi is giving up as

she is going to college. They have

been with us for a long time and we

have had the pleasure to watch them

growing up and we wish them the very

best in the future.

Having had to deal with all the

difficulties and the early hours

required to have the rounds ready

every day, we feel that the supplier

issues (which are totally out of our

control) leave us with no other options.

We are extremely sorry to say, after

years of trying to ensure we deliver

newspapers every day of the year, rain

and shine, we have little choice but to

end deliveries in King’s Somborne,

the 3rd September being the last day.

The deliveries to Up Somborne and

Houghton will continue as normal.

We are sorry for the inconvenience

this will cause and hope you

understand the difficult decision we

have had to make. As always, you can

still get your daily paper from the

shop.

Kind regards,

Michelle

Summer may be drawing to a close,

but there’s double reason for music

fans to celebrate in King’s Somborne

as the Somborne Sessions have not

one, but two events in October.

The new season kicks off on Saturday,

1 October with a fabulous duo, Will

McNicol & Luke Selby. Will & Luke

draw on many influences, from

Brazilian sambas through driving

African rhythms, from Celtic folk

melodies to North American foot-

stamping blues numbers. Combining

this worldwide diversity with Will &

Luke’s instrumental virtuosity and

musical understanding has created an

exhilarating live show, full of

surprises, which has gained them more

than a few standing ovations. Will

McNicol was Guitarist Magazine’s

“UK Acoustic Guitarist of the Year” in

2011.

And, on 29th October, pull out your

worst/precious/best-forgotten 1980s

clothes out of

the loft to

welcome the

mighty China

Crisis to the

village. No

strangers to

the Top 40, doubtless you’ll remember

hits such as “Wishful Thinking” and

“Christian” and many more from their

35-year career.

Tickets are on sale now from

www.sombornesessions.co.uk

Will McNicol & Luke Selby £12 ( £14

on the night if still available)

China Crisis £20 (or, if still available,

Parish Council notes September 2016

Mr Dyke (Open Spaces Warden), Dr

Macintosh (Chairman Village Hall

management committee), B/Cllr Ward

and two members of the public

attended the public session of the

meeting held on 5th September 2016.

Dr Macintosh highlighted the urgency

for reaching agreement on the

proposed land transfer from Fields in

Trust to the Parish Council so the

Village Hall could determine the best

way to accommodate the needs of the

Pre-School under new legislation

coming into effect. The Chairman

advised that progress was being made

although no final date for the transfer

could yet be determined.

Dr Macintosh also stressed the on-

going vandalism problems suffered by

t h e H a l l a n d B / C l l r W a r d

recommended contact be made with

the Test Valley Borough Council anti-

social behaviour team. All incidents

of vandalism should also be reported

to the Police on 101 by anyone

concerned as to date there were

insufficient recorded incidents to

justify the presence of a police

officer.

B/Cllr Ward highlighted TVBC’s

willingness to organise computer

training for residents in the Village

Hall. Currently, there were 4 people

interested in this one to one training

opportunity but more names were

needed. Do contact him if you are

interested. He also spoke about the

proposed traffic regulation orders

(TROs) limiting HGV access to certain

narrow roads in the area

and that local farmers

were unhappy at vehicle

size limitations unless

exceptions could be made.

Legal advice was being sought on the

implications of introducing TROs and

their impact on farm vehicles and in

the meantime more discussion would

take place between interested parties.

Installation of the all-weather path

from The Gorrings around the edge of

the 3 Fields to the school and the

Village Hall began on 5th September

2016 and, weather permitting, the

work should be completed by early

October.

A bid had been made on SSE’s

resilience fund for a grant to purchase

an emergency generator, radios and hi-

viz clothing for use in emergencies by

the Parish resilience team. SSE also

has a priority services register on

which you should have your details

recorded so that in the event of a

sustained power cut you receive

priority for connection to an

emergency supply if you are reliant on

dialysis or other life support forms

requiring electricity for power.

Contact SSE if in need or doubt.

Nine volunteers have now come

forward to join the proposed

Community Speedwatch scheme.

There is no maximum limit and some

more names would be good to make

the scheme more effective; no new

speed reduction measures are likely on

either the Winchester Road or the

A3057 at this time so this might be the

only way of the community having an

impact on speeding drivers. You only

need to be available for a few or as

many hours each month as you feel

able to give. Full training is provided.

Please contact the Clerk, if interested.

Irresponsible dog walkers continue to

plague the recreation ground and other

open spaces by not picking up after

their pets. The Test Valley dog

warden has powers to prosecute

offenders but evidence is required for

the prosecution to be successful. He

will be increasing his visits to King’s

Somborne in an attempt to improve the

situation. As part of its awareness

programme, the Parish Council has

installed more reminder notices to pick

up after your pet and will be installing

a poop bag dispenser on the recreation

ground to encourage dog walkers to

pick up and deposit in one of the red or

green waste bins at the 3 Fields site.

Aster Housing has been approached

with a plan to increase the available

parking slots in the area of Scott Close

and their reaction was awaited.

Work continues on the Neighbourhood

Development Plan. A survey has been

completed on those brown field sites

within the Parish with development

potential and a Housing Needs Survey

will be completed shortly. A public

meeting will be called when the draft

plan is available for public comment.

The Parish Council has a dedicated

website, as does Neighbourhood

Watch, and also has Facebook and

Twitter accounts. Much useful local

information can be found on these

websites and by liking our Facebook

page or Twitter account. More people

are wanted to sign up to both Facebook

and Twitter to enable us to continue to

improve upon the spread of

information around the Parish which,

in turn, will help us illustrate to

external organisations whose help we

are seeking, the efforts to which we go

to spread information and seek

opinion.

As always, a full set of minutes can be

found on the Parish Council website

and in both Cross Stores and Martin’s

Corner Shop.

The next meeting of the Parish Council

will be on Monday 3rd October 2016

at 7.00pm in the Epworth Hall. All

Parish Council meetings are open to

the public and we look forward to

seeing you there.

Sad news

Just as we were going to press, it was announced that Philip Ray,

formerly of Old Palace Farm, died in Stevenage Hospital on the 8th

September at the age of 90.

Having suffered defeat by thirteen runs

at the hands of Crawley in the first T20

match of the season, KSCC was up for

a fight in the return match. The

visitors won the toss and put us in.

Quick bowler Van Eden took the

wickets of our first four batsmen for

twelve runs, and the home side was

soon staggering at 27 for 6: some

fight! However, the tide turned with a

crucial partnership between Miles

Gibbons and Phil Pidgeon stopping the

rot, with Miles retiring for 26 and Phil

finishing with 22 not out. Rohit

Sharma hit a crucial 13 at number ten,

for us to reach a total of 115. It has to

be confessed that the visitors were

involuntarily generous, managing to

make ‘extras’ second highest score

with 26. The innings of Crawley bore

a similarity to ours with two visiting

batsman exceeding a sum of 60 runs

between them and their last man being

the only other batsman to make more

than ten runs. Jake Batchelor and Phil

Pidgeon bowled fast and economically,

each taking three wickets to confine

the visitors to a losing total of 108.

The next match was played away

against Michelmersh and Timsbury.

We found it hard going. Phil Pidgeon

took the only three M&T wickets to

fall; two of their batsman retired on

25+ or more, as the rules dictate.

Together with one opener’s score of

20, plus the third highest score of 25

‘extras’, the home team reached a total

of 107. New members David Rudall

and Gary Mugridge scored 17 and 21

n o t o u t ,

respectively, and

Mat t Mar t in

retired on 25 in

the losing total of

94. One M&T bowler took half the

KS wickets with figures of 5 for 7!

The following match was played

against Roke (Manor), where

‘Hawkeye’ was invented. Our bowlers

performed well, but too many

‘extras’ (20) were again leaked. Jake

Batchelor removed both the openers

and Phil Pidgeon took 3 wickets for

14. New member, Chris Webb took a

wicket with the first ball he bowled for

us: is this a club record? The only two

notable innings of the visitors in a total

of 80 were 16 by one opener and 20 by

number four. We reached a winning

total in half the available overs. Miles

Gibbons retired on 25, Matt Martin

scored 23 and Chris Webb and another

new member, Adam King, each scored

12 not out.

We next travelled to Leckford Estate

and batted first. Against what is

always formidable opposit ion,

Leckford’s local rule required that all

players except for the wicket keeper

should bowl only two overs. Our

opener David Rudall was run out on

19; John Fahy and Miles Gibbon each

scored 16, and Matt Martin hit an

excellent 26 before having to retire. It

seemed likely that Leckford would

reach our score of 114 fairly easily;

but, in fact, they took 17 overs so to

do. Only two Leckford wickets fell; to

King’s Somborne

Cricket Club

13

Chris Webb (1 for 4) and Rohit

Sharma (1 for 8). Two new members,

Adam King and his wife Rachel have

joined the club. Rachel is a wicket

keeper and kept well against Leckford.

I believe that this is an historic

development for the club which is

most welcome.

On the third of August, we played

away at Broughton, who batted first.

Our bowling was tight, keeping the

scoring rate down, and with no repeat

of the previous leaking of extras – only

2! One of the opposition retired on 25

and two others scored 15 and 17 in a

total of 82. In reply, Matt Martin

retired on 28, and a few smaller scores

contributed to a winning total in 16

overs.

On 18th August, the Old Men’s

Cricket Club visited our recreation

ground. The anticipated rapid

darkening of the dusk persuaded the

captains to allocate only 16 overs to

each side. Our innings opened by

losing three wickets in the first two

overs. John Fahy made a slow start

with seven singles, but then opened up

with some hefty flows to reach 25 and

retirement. Phil Pidgeon took some

time to accommodate to the pitch, but

then accelerated to 25, followed by

Matt Martin who hit some excellent

clean shots for four before retiring for

the fifth time this season, upon which

achievement he is to be congratulated.

As the innings moved towards its end,

the captain, Ben Sherfield, hammered

the opposition bowling to reach not out

on 22, with the innings closing on 124.

In the innings of the visitors, one of the

openers just missed out on retirement

with 24 and a colleague made 21.

Rohit Sharma picked up two wickets

and Chris Webb took a ‘caught and

bowled’. The visitors’ scoring rate

was insufficient to threaten the home

team, who won by 36 runs.

After facing the distinct possibility

before the season began that we would

not be able to fulfil our fixture

commitments for lack of players, it is

most encouraging that eight new

players have since joined the club,

contributing to a season has been the

most successful for a number of years.

The considerable burden of pitch

preparation and square maintenance

throughout the season has been

shouldered principally by Richard

Harwood, Roger Jackson, Chris Kirby

and Dave Challis, without whose

efforts the club could not operate, and

who deserve the gratitude of all the

other players who benefit from their

hard work.

Dave McLoughlin Memorial

Cup This year the cup was contested as a

one off challenge match between

Somborne and Michelmersh &

Timsbury. After a very hard fought

game M&T came out on top 1-0. We

raised £70 for The Brain Tumour

Charity.

Andover League 6 a side

Tournament In the usual curtain raiser to the season

Somborne played superbly throughout

the day to see off all other clubs

in the league to retain the cup. In

a particularly sweet conclusion,

we beat Broughton on penalties

in the final.

First League Game -

Broughton 4 KSFC 4 If the previous weekend's 6 a side

battle wasn't enough, the fixtures

threw us together again for the

first league game. This was a

classic and is hopefully a good

sign for an entertaining season

ahead. Somborne went in front

through Mark Tanner, then Broughton

struck back with two quick goals.

Tom Woods squared things just before

half time, the second half was end to

end stuff with Broughton twice going

ahead. Somborne stuck at it with

another from Tanner and got the

equaliser with 3 minutes to go, Dan

Sherfield coolly putting away a penalty

after Josh Barnes caused panic in the

home defence and was brought down.

Somborne and District

Society

The sun shone for our annual summer

picnic on the 9th August which was

held in the lovely garden of Willow

Cottage alongside Chilbolton Common

by kind invitation of Doreen and John

Rowles. Fifty members and invited

guests assembled in the large marquee

to be greeted by a glass of Pimms.

Our hosts had prepared cheeses, roast

beef, roast ham and baked potatoes,

together with John’s superb home-

made breads and jams with honey

from his own hives. Members

provided accompaniments and a fine

selection of desserts. For the first

time, entry tickets included a raffle for

which there were five prizes. My

thanks go to all those who participated,

including those who erected and

dismantled the marquee.

After a gap of several years we have

decided to organise an afternoon

meeting again by special request which

is in addition to our usual monthly

meeting. We meet at 2.30 p.m. on

Wednesday, 12th October in the village

hall when well-known local raconteur

Louis Atkinson will recall his early life

in a small Hampshire village. Louis,

now a gentleman of mature years, has

lived in Weyhill since he was 17. He

became director of the London office

of Christian Dior, the large,

international fashion and fragrance

company which was founded in 1946.

Following early retirement, he

attended an agricultural college and

acquired a large flock of sheep, the

subject of one of his presentations he

gives to raise funds to promote his

charitable work. Light refreshments

will be served and a charge of £2 made

for each member or guest attending.

Our next regular meeting will be held

in the village hall on Wednesday, 26th

October at 8.00 p.m. when Jan Smith

will talk to us about “Vagrants,

Paupers and the Welfare State”. Jan

spoke to us last season when she told

us of the Wessex Film and Sound

Archive and showed historic films of

local interest. She was formerly the

Hampshire Chief Archivist and ran the

Hampshire Records’ Office for eight

years. Be there at 7.30 p.m. for tea/

coffee and a chat with fellow

members.

Operation Christmas Child It’s time to start filling those

shoeboxes again as Samaritan’s

Purse’s Operation Christmas Child

appeal gets underway.

King’s Somborne regularly collects

over 100 boxes full of gifts for

underprivileged children around the

world - this is a wonderful

achievement, and we are so grateful to

all of you who have supported the

appeal in the past. We’d love to collect

even more boxes this year!

OCC’s overseas partners select

children to receive boxes purely on the

basis of need, irrespective of

nationality or religious beliefs, and all

the boxes are given unconditionally,

with no strings attached. I have

witnessed first-hand the impact that

receiving the simple gift of a shoebox

can have, not only on the delighted

child, but also on their family who

realise that even though they may be in

desperate circumstances, someone

somewhere cares about them. Your

one little shoebox can be a powerful

thing!

And working in our local school, I

have also seen the fun that children

here can have in assembling their very

own shoebox for a child in another

country.

Packing a shoe box is simple. All the

instructions are in the leaflet which

will soon be available in the village

shops, churches and school.

As soon as your box is ready, just

bring it to School or Church, or contact

me on 01794 388531.

Many thanks, as ever, for your support,

If you have a medical or other important ap-

pointment, and have no other means of getting

there, phone Sue Jackson on 388 884 and tell her

the time, date and place you need to be.

She will then try to find a volunteer driver from among our 30 or so volunteers

to take you to the appointment, wait until you are ready to leave and bring you

home again. There is a charge to cover petrol costs based on around 40p a

mile, which you pay direct to the driver.

Our drivers lead busy lives, but try to fit in a trip or two each month to provide

this service, and we take around 40 people each month. We would love to

have more volunteers, so do get in touch if you feel you could help out.

Somborne Sisterhood WI A brilliant turn out for our September

meeting at the Working Men’s Club,

and it was lovely to welcome two

members from King’s Somborne WI

and two guests who were able to join

in the fun.

Samantha Boot made sure all had

glasses of something to drink before

calling the meeting to order and

making br ie f announcements ,

including volunteers for helping at and

baking for the vintage car event later in

the month and an update on the group

craft entry for the Romsey Show. She

then explained the rules of ‘Death

Ball’ – a game of skill, based on

traditional pub skittles, before the first

ball was thrown.

The evening proved very popular with

everyone giving their best shots (some

better than others!) before a tie was

declared as the

last four could

not be split.

Congratulations therefore to Bronya,

Kelda, Hannah and Annie.

There was much talk of setting up a

regular skittles club which the

Sisterhood will look into, and our team

of five for the Test Valley & Romsey

group WI skittles match in October,

managed to pick itself.

At the end of the evening, Samantha

thanked the staff and patrons of the

Working Men’s Club for making us

feel so welcome, the raffle was drawn

and the meeting closed.

Next meeting – Friday 7th October,

8pm, when we will be back in King’s

Somborne Village Hall for an evening

of Hoola Hoop fitness. Please wear

suitable clothing.

IT in the community Test Valley Borough Council is

working with King’s Somborne Parish

Council to launch a pilot of ‘IT in the

community’ to support residents to

gain online computers skills. This can

range from support using their own

devices (such as laptops, phones and

tablets) to creating new email

accounts.

Following Cllr Tony Ward’s notice in

last month’s Gauntlet we have had a

few people say they are interested but

we know there are many more people

in the community who need this type

of one to one hands on help. The next

stage is to find Community Mentors.

We are looking for Community

Mentors to assist clients at King’s

Somborne Village Hall for a few hours

a month. Appropriate training will be

provided. To date fortnightly sessions

are successfully running in Lockerley

and Nursling & Rownhams.

If you are interested in volunteering

please get in contact with Sarah

Fordham for an informal chat or for

more information.

Women’s Fellowship Women’s Fellowship is an informal meeting for women of all ages

which is held in the Epworth Hall once a month. The dates for the

next few meetings are as follows:-

Friday, 28th October Speaker - TBA

Monday, 28th November Speaker - TBA

Monday, 19th December Favourite carols and Christmas poems

All meetings start at 2.30pm with a hymn and a prayer.

Why not come along and see if it’s for you?

For more details call Marion 388121 or Marilyn 389356

I am pleased to say that the new store

room is almost ready to be occupied

and all that needs to be undertaken is

some electrical work and painting,

once these jobs have been done we

will be able to decide what goes

where! Because we will have more

storage the VHMC have decided to

purchase a further 50 new chairs of the

same type as the last batch which have

proved so successful.

The major item which was discussed

last week at a joint meeting of the

VHMC and the VHDC was the

increased requirements of the pre-

school as a result of the Governent's

plannned changes to Early Years

education. As from next September

children age 2-4 whose parents are

both working will be entitled to 30

hours pre-school education each week.

Much as we support our excellent pre-

school I am afraid that within our

existing building we cannot provide

either the space or time to meet this

entitlement. The pre-school would also

like an area of the hall to be entirely

dedicated to their service. After

considerable discussion the VHMC/

VHDC decided in principle that the

pre-school should have such an area

but that it should be available to other

hirers during school holidays. The fact

the the joint committees have agreed in

principle to this request does not

necessarily mean that it can be

achieved by next September. An

urgent meeting of the VHDC will be

held to consider the short and long

term planning considerations of the

decision but this is a complex problem

and it may not be possible for the

village hall to achieve a satisfactory

solution without help from other

authorities.

Meanwhile we will soldier on!

on sale this year, all done by local

artists.

Thelma Blamey took a lovely

photo of winter foliage, Caroline

Hervey Bathurst has produced a

design titled ‘Victorian Christmas’

in pastels, and Elizabeth St.John

has produced a watercolour

painting titled ‘Snowman King’s

Somborne’.

Each card has the greeting ‘With

best wishes for Christmas and the

New Year’. We are very grateful

to all of them for their generous

contributions.

The cards will be available from 31st

October in the Village Shops, also at

some Services and at the Winchester

Combined Charities Christmas Card

Shop in the Tourist Information Office

at The Guildhall, which opens on 27th

October.

Please note that if you buy any parish

cards at the Guildhall, we receive

every penny that you spend. The Shop

is staffed entirely by volunteers

(including us!) and takes no

commission—indeed a group of

volunteers from the village will be

manning the shop on Thursday 1st

December in the morning. The cards

measure approx. 6” x 4 and will cost

£4.00 for a pack of 8 cards and

envelopes.

The good news is that readers of

The Gauntlet will be able to buy

the cards at £4.00 by filling in the

form on the opposite page. We

will even do our best to deliver

your order so you can have all

your cards written before the

King’s Somborne WI The meeting, held on Wednesday 14th

September, which was chaired by our

President Thelma Blamey, opened

with a discussion of the previous two

months' activities. Walks had

continued on a weekly basis, to the

enjoyment of those taking part. It had

been decided to re-convene the Book

Club and to consider ways in which it

might better reflect the preferences of

members - meeting every two months

perhaps, choice of titles to be read, etc.

As usual, we did not hold a monthly

meeting in August, but instead hosted

a fund-raising event on 10th August to

celebrate the Queen's 90th Birthday.

In spite of taking place in the holiday

season, the party was well attended.

The principal beneficiaries of the funds

raised were the W.I.'s Denman College

and BOAZ (a charity which supports

young people with learning difficulties

once they end full-time education). A

smaller contribution was made to the

ACWW, an organisation which helps

women in poorer countries all over the

world to set up local self-help co-

operatives.

T h e

contribution of

our speaker, Mr.

Tim Austin, OBE, which was entitled

“Something for Everyone: Songs and

anecdotes”, did not disappoint.

Accompanying himself on the guitar,

Mr. Austin treated us to many old

favourites from our younger days,

inviting us to sing along (which we

surpr ised ourselves by doing

enthusiastically). The songs, ranged

from Buddy Holly (“Oh, Boy!”),

Tommy Steele (“Singing the Blues”)

and Jim Reeves (“Walk on By”) to

Lonnie Donnegan (“Putting on the

Style”) and “Eidelweiss” from “The

Sound of Music” and he was joined by

one of our members , Sarah

Pennington, for a spirited rendition of

“There's a Hole in my Bucket”. The

songs were interspersed with stories,

jokes and tricks and he finished with

“When the Saints Go Marching In”. A

very enjoyable time was had by all.

Our next meeting will be on

Wednesday, 12th October, at 7.30 p.m.

in the Village Hall. All are welcome.

New Seated Exercise Class –

Promoting wellbeing for the over

60’s

Winchester, September 13 2016 –

Older people encouraged to improve

health and wellbeing through exercise.

The Winchester Live at Home Scheme

(WLAHS), which supports older

people living in their own homes is

setting up a new Seated Exercise Class

in King’s Somborne as part of an

expansion project supported by

Hampshire County Council. The first

class started on Monday 12 th

September, 10.30am – 12noon at

King’s Somborne Village Hall and will

run on a weekly basis.

Claire Morgan, manager of the

WLAHS, said: “We are excited to be

expanding our services to older people

living in King’s Somborne and

Stockbridge. The sessions are designed

to improve the strength, flexibility and

mobility of the participants as well as

promote a general feeling of

wellbeing”.

“Each week there will be an hour of

gentle seated exercise followed by half

an hour for Members to socialise over

tea and coffee”.

The new class is not the only service

being offered in this area – Winchester

Live at Home are also setting up a

befriending scheme for older people in

the area and are looking for new

Volunteers to support this service.

Befriending involves visiting an older

person at home on a regular basis,

perhaps an hour a week for a chat and

a cup of tea. Anyone can be a

Volunteer befriender, the only skills

needed are a caring nature and good

listening skills.

If you are interested in becoming a

Member or a Volunteer please visit

Prayer Meeting We hold our prayer meetings on the first Monday of each month

at 2.15pm. We meet for about an hour at Shappon, Romsey

Road, when we pray for our parish, families, friends and anyone else in need.

If you have any prayer requests there are slips on the table at the back of the

church which you may put into the box provided or alternatively phone me,

Dulcie Witts on 01794 388267.

Our meeting is very informal and we should be pleased to welcome new

members.

Meeting the Vicar As many will know, when families get in contact to arrange a

baptism, wedding or funeral, I usually meet with them either in

their homes or at The Rectory in Stockbridge.

It might be that from time to time some would like to take the opportunity to

see me for other reasons, such as for a brief chat, to check something out or if

they need some help.

With this in mind, I am planning to be in the ‘Parish Room’ (entrance through

the brown left side gate of the ‘New Vicarage’, Romsey Road) on a number

occasions in the next few months. For those unfamiliar with the ‘New

Vicarage’, it is next to Froghole, Please go around the side of the house and

do not ring the bell on the front door as the Vicarage, at present, has tenants.

The date when I will be visiting is:

October Tuesday 25th, 2.00—4.00pm

I look forward to meeting anyone who calls in.

Tiny Tots has now restarted and we

have thoroughly enjoyed welcoming

the children back after the long

summer break. The first session of the

year saw us celebrating the seasons of

the year and the children made a

beautiful painting depicting a tree in

all 4 seasons.

Throughout the rest of the half term we

will be turning our attention to

Harvest. We will be busy thinking

about all the food we have to be

thankful for and have already begun

learning some Harvest themed songs.

The session we are all looking forward

to is 'Bread' when we will have our

ever-popular tasting session!

New faces are always welcome so, if

you would like to join us, please come

down to the church at 2pm for a drink

and biscuit. The session gets under

w a y b y 2 . 1 5 a n d f i n i s h e s

by 3.15pm with songs and music. It’s

an informal group, so if the 2PM start

conflicts with napping schedules, you

are welcome to join us mid session.

TEST VALLEY VILLAGES LECTURE

BROUGHTON VILLAGE HALL

WEDNESDAY 19TH OCTOBER - 8PM

HOW DO YOU THINK?

Following the very well received talk on ‘Who do you think you are?’ last

season Andrew Seber CBE has agreed to return to tackle the subject of ‘How do

you think’ .The human brain and nerves make up an amazing biological

computing and communication system. Molecular biology has led to an

increasing understanding of how the brain works. Over half the drugs made

today ( legal and otherwise ) act on cell membranes and Andrew looks at the

fundamental science behind it all.

Andrew studied at Oxford and York Universities and specialised in cell

membranes. He spent most of his working life in public service education and

on his retirement has been explaining to a wide audience the basis of molecular

biology.

The evening is great value at £4 , to include a glass of wine. Proceeds are

donated to our speakers nominated charities. No charge for full-time students.

All are welcome.

Printed and published by the Parish of Somborne with Ashley, Church of St Peter and St Paul,

King’s Somborne, Hampshire. SO20 6PW

The Vicar has the last word Yes, it’s the vicar writing Last Word for the 3rd month in a row!

In September I reminded us about how the “ordinary” regular things are rolling

again. The Olympics and Paralympics are over, the Football season is underway

and schools are well into the term.

Of course there are always the extra-ordinary life events to celebrate –

New babies, weddings and 25th and 50th anniversaries as well as big birthdays –

18, 21, 50, 60, 80 and more and more 90s and even100s!

But most of the time it’s the ordinary everyday stuff we have to deal with.

“Ordinary Time” is the longest of the church seasons.

It’s been running from mid-May just after Pentecost and carries on until the end

of November when Advent begins. There’s another shorter period of Ordinary

Time between Epiphany and Lent. At least 33 weeks of each year is “ordinary”.

Many of us think a bit about Jesus round Christmas and Easter but we can know

His presence right through the year. Ordinary doesn’t have to be boring and it

doesn’t mean God has gone away. In the Bible there’s a verse that tells us –

Jesus said “I will never leave you or forsake you…” Hebrews 13.5.

If you are feeling alone or need some encouragement try listening to

Premier Christian Radio www.premierchristianradio.com or

UCB (United Christian Broadcasters) www.ucb.co.uk

They are both available on digital radio or you can listen on your computer.

When you hear a good news story – make a note of it.

When you hear a song that lifts your spirit - write down the title and listen out

for it when it’s played again.

Any of this may help on the ordinary, the bad and the good days.

Meanwhile, it’s harvest time - come along and celebrate at the Harvest Supper

and Harvest Service on 8th and 9th October. More details in this magazine.

With my prayers for the whole community

Jonathan
