Moving musical moments from the choir are interspersed with monologues by the twelve to underscore the Biblical truths presented by the disciples, to augment their monologues, and to focus on pivotal events in the Biblical story not covered by the drama. As well, the congregation will have the opportunity to celebrate communion at the table with Jesus and the disciples. We hope this Maundy Thursday presentation will become a highly anticipated Holy Week experience each year, not just for Belin Memorial but for the entire community. Opportunities to portray disciples and to work behind the scenes are still available. As always, taking part in any Lenten service only enhances the Resurrection Morn experience. “The Living Last Supper”

Maundy Thursday Musical Drama: March 24, 7 PM

For centuries before Jesus came to earth, each year when the spring harvest began, the Jewish people were instructed to remember the emancipation of Israel from slavery in Egypt by observing Passover. In fact, the instructions for the Passover Feast were given to Moses before the Ten Commandments! It pre-dates all other feasts, and its importance was made clear when Jesus chose to celebrate this feast during His last hours. The Passover Supper is rich with beauty and symbolism. The unleavened bread represents the sinless Savior. When Jesus says to His disciples, “This is my body,” it gives the bread a whole new level of meaning. The blood of the lamb figures heavily into this ceremony as well. In Egypt, the Israelites painted their door posts with the blood of a spotless lamb. When the angel of death saw this, he “passed over” those homes and spared the first-born from the last of the ten plagues - the plague of death. When John refers to Jesus as “...the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world,” it becomes clear that the Israelites had been presenting a picture of Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection for 1,500 years before His birth by celebrating Passover! This Maundy Thursday (March 24th), the Belin Chancel Choir will present The Living Last Supper, a musical drama

that portrays the Last Supper in the Upper Room, which was a celebration of the Passover Feast. It is based on Da Vinci’s famous painting depicting Jesus and the twelve disciples as they were together collectively for the last time before His crucifixion. Moving musical moments from the choir are interspersed with monologues by the twelve to underscore the Biblical truths presented by the disciples, to augment their monologues, and to focus on pivotal events in the Biblical story not covered by the drama. As well, the

congregation will have the opportunity to celebrate communion at the table with Jesus and the disciples. We hope this Maundy Thursday presentation will

become a highly anticipated Holy Week experience each year, not just for Belin Memorial but for the entire community. Opportunities to portray disciples and to work behind the scenes are still available. As always, taking part in any Lenten service only enhances the Resurrection Morn experience. Thoughts from the Garden

of Trees and Vision

- by Henrietta Huff

As I read of the need to remove our beloved oak, which is half of the original “natural frame” for our sanctuary, my thoughts were taken back to a time long ago. It was December 1850 when the Reverend James L. Belin first chose this site, above all the vast acreage that was his, as the site on which he would build a “Missionary Establishment in Waccamaw Neck.” He signed an Article of Agreement with the Trustees of the Methodist Episcopal Church, gave the land, and contracted with Mr. W.L. Dickson “to construct a dwelling house, a kitchen, a barn with two sheds, and a smoke house ... of quality materials...” The sum paid for this work was $1,845, and the keys were to be delivered on October 19, 1851. The house was built just a few yards east of our current sanctuary, close to the water, in a very different looking landscape than we see today. In conversation recently, the live oak tree that is now being removed was estimated to be about 150 years of age.

If that is the case, our live oak tree wouldn’t have been much more than a sapling when the house was built. In our cemetery and along Belin Road, there are 50+ more live oaks. Could they have been planted by the Rev. Belin, or were they just part of the forest through which a trail was forged? One huge oak tree, which is particularly beautiful with branches covered in Resurrection Fern, is located just a few feet from his gravesite. At its base are graves of two toddler cousins. Was it planted to mark their grave? I have many questions but know this, “To everything there is a season…” Just as we are grateful for the beauty of these trees, we can plan a landscape for future generations, a landscape that will reflect the vision of Rev. Belin. He chose this beautiful site to be not only his home but a church home for all who would come to worship in this beautiful place, from different places and backgrounds, but all with a great love of Jesus Christ.

Our Belin Garden passes very close to Rev. Belin’s gravesite. If you would like to visit, we will be happy to guide you. We are in the garden every Wednesday at 9 AM and welcome inquiries as well as volunteers who have an interest in keeping our grounds beautiful.
