THE LIVERY AND THE CORPORATION OF LONDON

City Apprenticeship
The Court of Aldermen’s rules for the inrolment of Apprentices are promulgated in the “Custom of London
Relating to Apprenticeships in Livery Companies” issued by the Chamberlain’s Court. The Court of
Assistants use these rules to recognize two categories of candidates for apprenticeship:
i. Children of members of the Company without the right of Freedom by Patrimony, who will normally be
accepted for apprenticeship on application to the Court.
ii. The Court may select other candidates for apprenticeship. It is mostly likely that these candidates will be
the recipient of awards and scholarships from the Company, under the age of eighteen, who have
demonstrated that they have strong potential as future Liverymen.
Family Apprenticeship
The City rules state that children of Freemen and Liverymen who, upon reaching the age of twenty-one, will
have the right by Patrimony to the Freedom of a Company and of the City, should not be bound Apprentice.
On 2nd July 2002, the Court adopted a scheme of “Family Apprenticeship” for children of members of the
Company who have the right of entry to the Company by Patrimony in order that they may become better
acquainted with the Company.

CHARITIES
On 5th September 2014, the Charity Commission approved a new Charitable Incorporated
Organisation, The Innholders’ Charitable Foundation, for which the Company, as
represented by its Court of Assistants, is the sole corporate Trustee.
This new charity was set up to mark the 500th anniversary of the granting of the Company’s
first Royal Charter in 1514 and its object reflect those of the Company’s historic
unincorporated charities from which it has been funded, namely:
The Rydon Trust
The Violet Halliwell Charitable Trust
Worshipful Company of Innholders’ General Charity Fund
The Wates Charitable Fund
The William Austin Balls and Florence Balls Scholarship and
S H Bishop Will Trust
Its aims are:
The Young and Furtherance of Education
To advance the education for the public benefit, in such ways as the charity trustee sees fit including
awarding scholarships, bursaries or similar awards to young people, particularly but not exclusively
those from the Greater London area, and pupils attending the schools owned and operated by the
Licensed Trade Charity, and such other schools and educational establishments as the charity trustee
may, from time to time, see fit to support;
The Elderly and their Welfare:
To relieve financial hardship, sickness and poor health amongst elderly persons, particularly but not
exclusively, those formerly employed within the hospitality industry by the provision of grants
and helping in the development of nursing staff employed in the care and nursing of such persons.
General Charitable Purposes:
Such other charitable purposes for the public benefit as are exclusively charitable according to the
laws of England and Wales as the trustee may from time to time determine.
Plans are being considered in the Court for ways by which to acknowledge in the Hall past
donors to the Company and its charities, including those who supported the Quincentennial
Appeal.

In 2011/2012 the Court will meet in the following months for the transaction of the general
business of the Company:
October, November, January, February, April, June, August and October
The Functions to which Liverymen may expect to be invited are decided upon by the Court
each year, but as a general guide, they are likely to be as follows:-
Febuary, 1st Tuesday Court and Guest Dinners
April and Liverymen plus one guest may expect to be
September invited to one of these dinners each year.

March 2nd Friday United Guilds Service in St Paul’s Cathedral
before Good Friday followed by buffet lunch for those attending.
– Liverymen may be invited but only 20 places
are available for the Company in the Cathedral.
May 1st Tuesday A Company function – all Liverymen and
Freemen will be invited.
June 3rd Tuesday Dinner for Livery & Ladies
All Liverymen will be invited except those who
were invited to the CourtBanquet.
