President Wendy’s Message

Hello everyone

I trust you had a lovely Christmas and New Year and have had some-

time to rest and are now ready and rearing to go.

Theila and I enjoyed the high seas and NZ is picturesque . Unfortu-

nately we both came back with colds as the weather was a little chilly.

Please give this some thought as it is coming to the time of the year

where we need to consider/or would like to be on the board next year

or on one of the various committees. How about putting your hand up

as many hands make light work. If you have any ideas or projects we

could get our teeth into please let the board know.

If you are able to assist with the farmers markets on a Sunday please let

Glen know.

Keep cool and Hydrated.

President Wendy

Dear Glen

Thank you for all you did to make Carols a big success last night! Everything seemed to run

smoothly for which I’m eternally grateful!

In spite of the overcast weather and forecast rain, we estimate there were about 2500 people

attending. The amount of $3933.35 was raised for the nominated charity, Palliative Care ACT.

I’m more than happy with that and I know that the CEO of the organisation, Gayle Sweaney,

was thrilled.

To see photos of the evening, go to http://wvycphotos.phanfare.com. Password: 4yr3y3s0nly

Thanks for all your help and support. It’s been such a pleasure to work with the Canberra Valley

Lions Club for all these years. I can’t begin to tell you how grateful I am for your support.

Please express my thanks to all members.

Have a relaxed, happy Christmas and all the best for 2017 and beyond.

Many thanks! Alpha

CAROLS BY CANDLELIGHT—

GOOD EFFORT on 14th December

Thanks to Thelia, Chin, Kate , Zoe, Hunter and 9 helpers from Palliative care ACT, we had another successful evening of collections at the Carols, Stage 88.

The afternoon was a little damp and more rain threatened the evening which kept numbers down ,the crowd was esti-mated at 2500 attendee's. The rain stayed away until just at the end of proceedings.

It was again a happy crowd willing to donate to the cause and $3993 was raised for Palliative Care ACT who were ab-solutely thrilled with the support and amount raised.

Thanks to President Wendy and Graeme M for their late phone calls offering to cancel prior engagements if I didn't have enough helpers on the night.

Glenn—Coordinator

CATERING RUSH IN NOVEMBER/DECEMBER

30th November and the Ainslie Public School was our first adventure when they had an emergency!!

Wendy, Graham, Tony, Thelia and Gary settled their nerves and ran a very successful sausage sizzle for

the school community.268 sausages netted around $600. They also made a donation of $150 to our club.

Peter, Graham and Tony had looked after the Birthing Mothers Association lunch on

the Friday 2nd December . Numbers down on previous years. $260 receipts—this

money is usually presented to

the committee to help their fund

raising. Then on Saturday 3rd

December Clive, Maria, Roger,

Graham, Tony and Gary headed out to Tuggera-

nong and provided lunch for an Regional Develop-

ment Australia functionwhich was a hot afternoons

work. Surplus was around $350. Thanks for all the

assistance.

CLUB MAKES SPECTACLES DONATION

We were again able to post off some used spectacles

to add to our contribution to this worthwhile project

during December. We received a letter of thanks for

our contribution.

Thank You Kate, Hunter and Family

A great night’s celebrations

Club members had the opportunity to come together for

Christmas Celebrations on Saturday 10th December at the

Jerrabomberra Home of Kate and Hunter. Despite the small

numbers everyone enjoyed a delicious meal prepared by

Hunter and served with the help of family members.

Our menu saw us enjoying

Ham, Tukey and lots of

vegetables followed by

Plum Pudding and Ice

Cream. What more could

one ask for?

Our Lions Puddings were a

bit short on the coins that

we all grew up with.

Members attending each

brought along a child’s gift

which President Wendy

presented to one of the

appeals.

issues. Lion Gary Parker has removed himself from the LYH Board.

Farm Skills program continues to be successful and well supported by local schools.

Lion Lyn and David’s words on Welfare.

Hi all,

Sounds like most of our members are hail and hearty.

Lions Lady Anne Baldwin has turned the corner in her recovery following her heart surgery. We wish

Lions Lady Anne a speedy recovery.

Our club has some gentle men who are Life Members. Lion Leo and Lion Phil have had to make the

decision to forgo our fortnightly meetings. This means we will see them at Lions Celebration evenings.

Their counsel and knowledge will be missed.

DECEMBER MEETING started the month…..

There are a few challenges when the first Tuesday of the month is the first day of the month. The evening

provided the opportunity to acknowledge the contributions of 5 Club Members. Kate Louis—2 years,

Glenn and Tanya Littlejohn—8 years, Laurie McCreath-28 years and Roger Bean 41 years. Discussions

took place regarding the procedures that should be taken when a club member resigns with the main

principal to be taken into account being the matter should be handed to the Membership Committee to

investigate the resignation.

We were advised that Lion Roger Bean had missed being present for

a member draw of $1000. Just the sort of news you need to hear!!

Discussions reagrdig meeting venues was ongoing.

In the Lucky Corner this meeting Thelia Halford had the lucky door

prize, Gary Parker won Joker Poker with a $20 prize and Maria

Caldeira went home happy winning Heads and Tails.

President Wendy concluded the meeting with a classic quote: “Watch out for the other idiots on the road”

WE DID JANUARY BACK THE FRONT

We enjoyed a Social Evening at the Southern Cross Yacht Club on Thursday 5th January. Lovely to welcome Leo and Shirley Sutton along with Helen and Phil Dodds. Lions Ladies Sue Heathwood, Jenny Galley, Lois Parker, Elizabeth Marburg, Anne Baldwin and Pauline McCreath enjoyed the evening until the threat of a thunder storm changed peoples plans very quickly. Lion Sam Wong made himself a new best friend on the evening but they did not stay together for very long!! Trenton and Elizabeth did not have

as much luck as Sam making friends.

We held a formal dinner meeting on Thursday 19th January. The opportunity to acknowledge Lions Andy Galley for 2 years in December along with Lion Graeme Morriss for 6 years and Lion Ross Thomas for 35

years saw them each presented with a membership Certificate.

Lion David McKenna gave us an insight into his busy life before he came to Canberra. A separate

summary appears elsewhere.

We were advised the Club Shed needs some work done on it. Lion Tony Marburg is to nominate some dates when we can work on the shed. Lion Peter Heathwood continues to improve the buildings at

Lions Youth Haven. They would welcome some assistance.

An update on our successful Christmas Cakes sales was given with the sale of 1243 cakes. A projected profit of $4600 is anticipated. Lion

Laurie McCreath thanked everyone who supported the project.

The Lucky Corner was Lion Daya for the Lucky Door Prize, Lion

Wendy won $10 from Joker Poker.

Just read that 4,153,237 people got married last year, not to cause any trouble but shouldn't that be an even number? I find it ironic that the colours red, white, and blue stand for freedom until they are flashing be-hind you. A recent study has found that women who carry a little extra weight, live longer than the men who mention it. You know that tingly little feeling you get when you like someone? That's your common sense leaving your body. Did you know that dolphins are so smart that within a few weeks of captivity, they can train people to stand on the very edge of the pool and throw them fish?

Money talks ...but all mine ever says is good-bye.

ABOUT DAVID—A BUSY BOY

FOR A 25 YEAR OLD!! The opportunity presented itself at a January meeting to lean about David McKenna. He was born in Blacktown, New South Wales in 1984.... which makes him 25 this year!!, no matter what the

math says! For those who watched Struggle Street on SBS last year, you could see 4 of my childhood homes on the telly! David lived with my mum and little sister in Bidwill and went to Blackett Primary School, Clare Catholic High School and Loyola College for my senior years. His mum moved to Adelaide when he was in year 10, to take up a job as a special education teacher... to answer any curiosity questions, he didn't know his dad... Moved to Wollongong to live with grandparents in 2009, and joined Wollongong Lions Club a few months later in 2010... During this time there he served and survived two terms as Vice President, Programme Director and Bulle-tin Editor... basically, he was the cruise director for two years... He basically joined because he had also joined Jaycees and thought Lions would also be a great way of meeting some new people around town.... and he wasn't wrong! In 2013 David was nominated as the Wollongong Citizen of the Year for his volunteer work with the Australian Navy Cadets, Jaycees, Lions, JP Association, MindBlank, and a few other charities around town - apparently he did 5,000 hours of volunteer work over three years... Apart from Lions, my biggest community project has been JCI or Jaycees...He had the opportunity to serve as Governance Director and National President... in his year as President he was one of 3 finalists for most efficient National President in the World! He also had the opportunity to go to the UN to provide input to the development of the Sustainable Development Goals... David has a Master of Public Administration from the Institute of Governance and Policy Analysis at the University of Canberra.... a Postgraduate Certificate of Politics and Public Policy from Macquarie University.... and a Graduate Certificate of Laws from the ANU... He also got do some leadership training with the Harvard Business School and the Australian Institute of Company Directors. Work wise, his career began as an Executive Assistant working in a variety of Charities including SDN Children's Services and Care Connect... He had a stint as a debt collector at BayCorp Advantage and American Express... Eventually entered the public service and worked as a Court Officer in the NSW District Court where heard some pretty interesting stories in Criminal Court! Next it was over to Sydney Water as a Co-ordination Officer.... Then he decided to make the move to the APS... Firstly working with the Attorney-General's Department in the Classification Branch. In 2012 he moved to Canberra to take up a job in the Department of Finance, working as an Executive Assistant in the Deregulation Group. After the Abbott government came into power our team was moved over the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet... which was pretty exciting! He helped design the Indigenous Employment Parity Initiative... an employment programme aimed at getting the largest employers in the country to increase their indigenous workforce to 2.5% by 2020... it was a pretty exciting programme. Last year the opportunity to head to Parliament House to be an Adviser to the Assistant Minister for Multicultural Affairs presented itself and later the Minister for International Development and the Pacific. It was pretty exciting to contribute to the Syrian refugee resettlement process, work on judicial appointments, and some other pretty cool secret squirrel stuff! He is now working as the Senior Policy Officer at Carers Australia, which is an interesting position. David transferred to the Lions Club of Canberra Valley in June 2016.
