Lastseason,TheLewisCountyLadyLionshadarecordof20‐11whichwasaprettydecentseasonfortheLadyLions.SeniorSavannahAnderson,whoaveraged13.5pointspergame,6.5reboundspergame,andwasalsoaJr.Ky/IndianaAll‐Startryout.IfSavannahremainshealthy,shemaypossiblybecometheleadingscorerandre‐bounderatLCHSBasketball.However,Savannahwasn'ttheonlyonemakingtheLadyLionssosuccessfullastseason.SeniorEmilyFrye,the loorgen‐eral,averages14.5pointspergameand6.5assistspergame.SeniorMcKenzieThompson,lastseason'sLadyLionsDefensivePlay‐eroftheyear,generallyguardstheopponentsbestplayer.McKenziebringslotsofenergytothesquad.JuniorJayceyFite,averages10.5pointspergameandhit94threepointersfortheLadyLionslastsea‐sonandwassecondinstatewithmostmakes.FreshmanAbbyPick,whoaverag‐es7.5pointspergame.AbbycameoffthebenchlastseasonandgavetheLadyLionssolidminutes.Rightoffthebenchbeingthe6thor7thmanfortheLadyLions,SophomoreErica,Fryeafterbouncingbackfromabrokenbackher8thgradeseason,performedverywelldownthestretchfromtheLadyLionswithtimelybucketsandsoliddefense.Freshman,AllisonVoyles,comingoffthebenchgrewasplayer,learninghowtodefendherpositionandplayalongsideofthevarsityteam.HeadcoachJayFite's,goalsfortheteam"togrowasateamandtogoundefeatedinthe63rdDistrict,6‐0intheregularseasonandwinanotherDistrictChampionshipTitle,andgivingourselvesachancetogettotheRegionFinalsandtogetovertheAshlandhumporwhoeverelsewouldhappentobeintheway,towintheschool's irstRegionTitle.IaskedCoachFitewhathispredictionsontheseasonwouldbeandhisresponsewas,"reachingthegoalsthatwe'veset,butalotofthingshavetohappen.First,wehavetostayhealthy.Secondly,continuetogetbet‐terandhavealittlebitofluckalongthewayaswell.Ifwehaveallofthosethingsinourfavorwehaveapret‐tygoodchancewecanreachourgoals."Howdoestheteamlook?"We'vehadsomereallygreatpracticesprobablyasgoodasanyofthe iveyearsI'vehad.Ourolderkidsareleadingandouryoungerkidsarebecomingmorecompetitiveandmakingpracticeamuchmorecompetitivesituation.Ithinkthesky'sthelimitwhenthathappensandmakesusdeep‐er,beabletoplaymoreplayers."‐CoachFiteFinallyaskingCoachFitewhothetoughestopponentsarefortheLadyLions."Forthelast3‐4yearsthetopoftheregionhasbeen1.Ashland2.EastCarter3.Boyd4.Lewisand3‐4yearsAshlandhasputusoutoftheRegionalTournamentsoobviouslywehavetosaytheyaresomeonetolookat...AlsotheywereintheStateSemi‐Finalslastseasons,they'rede initelyonourminds.EastCarterwasranked#16inthestatelastyear,althoughwehadachancehereathometobeatthemand2yearspriortothatintheRegionTournament.Eventhoughthosearethemainopponentswedon'toverlookanyone.Sowe'regoingtotakeeverygameseri‐ousandcomeouttowineverygame."

byTuckerBruchAlthoughwelostsixseniorslastyear,I'mcon identthatthisyear'steamcanhaveaprettydecentrecordiftheygiveittheiralleverygameoftheseason.Thisteamhasgreatpotential.Itmightbealittlebitbumpystartingoff,nothavingourstartingseniorpointguardtoleadusintotheseason,butI'msurethatjuniorpointguard,JakeParker,willdoainejobatholdingtheteamtogeth‐er.Iknowsomeofyoumighthavesomedoubtsaboutthisyear'steamnotbeingabletopullthrough,butIhaveexperiencedthisteamplayirsthand,andIhavenodoubtthatifeveryplayergivestheirabsolutebesteffortwhiletheirfeetareonthecourt,wecandoit.Defensively,iftheysticktowhattheyaretoldtodobythecoaches,wecanbeoneofthebestdefensiveteamsinthisdistrict.Thisteamcanplaytogetherbetterthanmostinthisdistrict,andiftheythink,play,andactlikeateam,theycanobtainaprettygoodrecord.Theseyoungmenhavetalent,andtheyneedtobewillingtouseit.ThisteamwillbelookingtoParkerandTrentonWalkertoleadtheteamforthemostpart,butIthinkthatotherswillbesteppinguptheirgametohelprackupthepointsonthescoreboard.Someoftheseseniorshavebeenworkinghardandputtinginalotoftimeandeffortbecausetheywanttogooutwithabang,andIbelievethattheywillshockuswiththeirperformance.Thegoalsfortheteamthisyeararetogetbetterthroughouttheyear,togettotheRegionalsinMorehead,andtowinthreegamesthere.CoachHamptonsaystheteamdoesn'tlookreadytoplayAshlandjustyet,andtheyneedtogetsomepracticesinoverThanksgivingbreak,sothattheywillhopefullybereadytoplaybyDecember2nd.CoachHamptonbelievesthatourtoughestopponentswillbeAshland,ourseasonopeninggame,thedistrictseedgamesagainstGreenup,Raceland,andRussell,becausetherewillbemoreaddedpres‐suretothosegames.TheothertoptoughestopponentshesayswillbeRowanandBoyd.Oneofourkeymatchupsthisyearwillbeonour irstgame.NickMiller,whoplaysforAshland,ispre‐seasonratedasthenumberoneplayerintheregion.AnotherkeymatchupwillbeagainstJairJackson,aGreenupCountyMusketeer.Jairisabigblocker,agreatdefender,andrebounder.ButwearecountingonJa‐cobKieblertohelpneutralizeourheightproblemwithgettingoffensiveanddefensiveboards.OurreturningstartersareJakeParker,TrentonWalker,DevonDuncan,andJordan"Scooby"Davis.Hamp‐tonsaysthattheothers,aswellastheguysmovingupfromJV,needtostepitupandlearnquickly.Thisteamneedsleaders,andIsaacWeddingtonwillbeoneofthem.Eventhoughhewon'tbeonthe loorwiththerestofhisbuddies,hewillbevocallyleadingthemfromthesidelines.SocomedowntoshowthemyoursupportandwishthemgoodluckonDecember2ndfortheir irstgameoftheseasonagainstAshlandonourhomecourt.They'llneedandappreciateallofthesupportyougivethemthroughouttheyear.GOLIONS!!

byJoshuaHeiningerWhenitcomestoasport,howbigofanumberistwo?Youcanindyourselftwopointsaway,twosecondsslow,oreventwopositionsbehind.Saturday,No‐vember1,theCrossCountryteamfoundouttheimportanceofthenumbertwo.GoingintothemeetIwasindividuallyrankednumberfourinourRegion(SincenotpartofafullteamIhadtorunasanindividualparticipant),agoodpositionto indmyselfinconsid‐eringthetop iveindividualrankedrunnersmakeittoState.AswealllinedupinthestartingblockswegotnewsthatTWOteamsdidnotshowup,adevas‐tatingblowtoalmosteveryoneconsideringnowonlythreeteams

hadachancetomakeittoState,notfour.Notonlydidtheseteamsnotshowingupaffecthowmanyteamsadvance,butitaffectedwhoindividuallyadvanced.Extrarunnersgotthrownintotherank‐ingsduetothemishapandmyrankingfelltosixthorseventh.Duringthelast100metersoftheraceIremainedstuckinsev‐enthplace,TWOpositionsbehindwhereIneededtobe.EventhoughItriedtopush,IfellshortoftheTWOrunnerslessthanTWOfeetinfrontofme,crushinganyhopeofadvancingtoStatethefollowingweek.Ontheotherendofthe ieldEighthgraderMichaelWhiteandFreshmanKaitlynDowneycouldbefoundputtingintheirall.Michael,eventhoughrunningstrongallyear,didnotfeelthegreatestgoingintothemeetandwouldwinduprunningatime

TWOminutesslower(almosttothesecond)ofhispersonalbest.Kaitlyn, inishedwithagoodtime,butduetotheexperiencedcompetitionshewould inishtheracemid‐pack,unabletoadvancetotheStateMeet.Thehardestpartofthewholeday,though,wasn'tthefallingshortortheroughweathercondi‐tions,itwassayinggoodbye,inmyopinion,tooneofthegreatestcoachesthathaseversteppedfootintothisschool.RobertBar‐ton,coachedhislastmeetforLCHSthatfatefulSaturdayfollow‐ingfouryearsofcoachingbothCrossCountryandTrack.Aftersayinggoodbyetoatearstrickenteamheheadedofftoanewjobwiththepromisethathewouldcomebackeverychancehegotandcheeruson.Soeventhoughhe'sgonefromcoaching,I'mgoingtodedicatethisupcomingtrackseasontohim.Thisnextoneisforyoucoach.

byLexiAdkinsOnNovember7theLewisCountyFFAtraveledtoMoreheadtojoininLivestockJudgingCompetition.Despitethecoldweathertheybundledupandtougheditout.Eachgrouphadtocirculatethepensandjudgeeachanimalgroup,cat‐tle,pigs,andsheep.Eachgroupofanimalsarejudgedonsize,meat,weight,shape,andbreeding.Afterthejudgingcompetitionalltheschoolswhoparticipatedgath‐eredtogetherandsatdownforagoodlunch.Theyconversedandbraggedabouthowwelltheyallthoughttheydid.Attheendofthedaytheyallsaidtheirgoodbyes,wishedeachothergoodluck,andthende‐parted.AgreattripforLewisCountyFFA!

“ThanksgivingattheGilliam's.”Therecouldn'tbeamorechaoticsentence.Childrenrunningaroundeverywhere,peoplepouringinbywhatseemslikethedozens.Evenwithallofthischaosandconstantroarofnoise,Iwouldn'tchangeanyofit.Evencrazierthanallofit,istryingtodescribeittosomeonewhohasneverbeen,usingonlyour5senses.AsIwalktowardsthehomeofmyGrandmaandGrandpaGilliam,Iseemyniecepeekingthroughtheblindstoseewhoiscoming.WhenIwalkthroughthedoorIseemysister‐in‐lawsettingthetablefordin‐ner.Mygrandpaisleanedbackinhisreclinerrelaxing.MyGrandma,mom,andallofmyaunts inishpreparingthefood.Allofthefoodissteaminghotandeveryone'smouthwatersjustlookingatit.The irstthingIfeelistherushofwarmthwhenIopenthedoor.AsIwalktowardsthecoatrackIamhuggedbyaunts,uncles,andallofmycousins.Ihangmyjacketandcontinueintothekitchen.Windrushesbymylegsasthesmallchildrenrunpastmeplaying.Onceweallgatheraroundthetable,wesaygraceandbeginto illourplates.IfeeltheplatequicklyheatupmyhandsasIplacedallofthe" ixings"ontoit.However,themainthingIfeelistheloveandsupportmyfamilyalwaysgivesme.DuringThanksgiving,Ihearlaughterfromallagegroups.Ihearmygrandma'sserenadingvoicetellingthelittlekidstheycanonlyhaveonedesserttheyhavedinner.Theelderssitinthelivingandjokeaboutbeingoldandridiculeeachother.But,aboveall,themostenjoyablesoundthatisheardatmyfamily'sThanksgivingiswhensomeoneyellsfromthekitchen,"Let'seat!"Aswewalktowardsthefood,youcanpracticallysmellhowdeliciousthefoodtastes.Thesavoryscentoftheturkeycombineswiththefruitysmellofthecranberrysaucetomakeanaromathatisextravagant.Eve‐ryone'ssensesareoverwhelmedbythescentofthegreenbeancasse‐role.AsIwalktothedesserttable,Iambombardedwiththescentofpumpkin.Finally,nomatterwhattimeofyearitis,youcanalwayssmellapotofcoffeebrewingattheGilliam's.ThisbringsmetomyfavoritesensationforThanksgiving:taste.AsIpickupmyforkmymouthbeginswatering,whatshouldItasteirst?Itakeabiteofmyfavorite:grandma'sgreenbeancasserole.Itisperfectasusual.Iinishmyplateandmoveontodessert.Thepumpkinpieisoutofthisworld!Mygrandma'scookingisde initelyabigpartinwhyIloveThanksgivingwithmyfamily.Asyoucansee,Thanksgivingwithmyfamilydoesn'tseemdifferentinwriting.Itisn'tuntilyouwalkthroughthedoorscanyoutell,thatweareonegreatbigdysfunctionalfamily.Andforthat,Iamthankful.

LexiMakesThanksgivingPlansbyLexiAdkinsThanksgiving;atimeyouspendwithyourfamily,eatamazingfood,andthinkaboutwhatyou'rethankfulfor.Ihavealreadybeenbusyandbustlingaroundtryingtoprepareformyfamily'sThanksgivingfeast.I'vegath‐ereddecorations,sentinvites,wentshopping,plannedmyout it,andwonderedwhatImaybring.Iplanonthisyear'sThanksgivingbeingagreatone.Igettospendtimewithmyfamily,eventhefamilyIrarelygettosee.Igettohavefun,talk,andlaughwithmycousins,aunts,uncles,andgrandparents.Ialreadyknowwewillhavesomeamazingfood,nothingbutthebestcomesfrommygrandmother’skitchen.Everyyear,aftereveryonearrivesandthefoodisdone,wegatheraroundthetabletosayourprayersandblessthefood.Everyonescramblestotheplatesandforkstobe irstinthelonglineofhungryfamily.NoonewantstobelastandmissoutonNannie'schickenanddumplings.Whoever indsthewishboneintheturkeygetstobreakitwithwhoevertheychose.Everyoneinmyfamilydoesn'tjusteat,wedevour.Aftereveryonegoesbacksforseconds,thirds,andsome‐timesfourths,gettingtheirbelliesfull,wesitandtalkandenjoyeachother'scompanymakinggreatmemo‐rieswithoneanother.Picturesaretaken,storiesaretold,andattheendofagreatdaygoodbyesaresaid.IplanonaThanksgivingofspendingitwithmylovingfamilyandfeastingonsomeamazingfood.IhopeeveryoneplansonhavinganamazingThanksgivingaswell!

byJoshuaHeiningerWhenitcomestoThanksgivingmyfamily’snotoneofthosecrazytradition,haveeverystepofthedayplannedout,kindoffamilies.Wekindofdothingslastminute.Soasyoucanguesstherecomesahighlevelofcrazywhenitcomestomyturkeyday.WhenitcametopickingthebestoneIeverhadIcouldn'tthinkofan‐ythingat irst.Thereisoneday,though,thatIdoholdclosesttomyheart,adaywherejustforasecondthecrazybecamecalm.MovinguptoKentuckyafewyearsagoIdon'thavealotofchancestoseemyfamilybackhome,soanytimeIhavewiththemistimeI indmostspecial.Abouttwoyearsagowealldecidedtogettogether,acrazythingconsideringtheRalph/HeiningerfamilyspreadthroughoutthewholeeasternpartoftheUnitedStatesfromNewYorktoFlorida.Headinguptomyaunt'shouse(ourmidwaymeetingplace)Ihadcrazyemotions.ThewholerideIcouldn'tstopthinkingofseeingfamilyforthe irsttimeinforever,butIalsowonderedaboutthosefamilymembersthatIhadthepossibilityofneverseeingagainafterthisday.WhenIgottomyaunt'shouseIspenteverymi‐nuteIcouldcatchingupwithmycousins,eatingasmuchasIcould,andofcourselistenedtoallthecrazysto‐riesmygrandparentscameupwith,notbelievinganyofit,butstillhangingontotheireveryword.ThisdayholdsaplaceasoneofthemostspecialtomethoughbecausejustforasecondIhadallthemostimportantpeopleinmylifewithme.Amomentofnoworriesor ighting,amomentwhereevery"Doyourememberwhen?"turnedintotearsandlaughter.AdaylikethatisoneI'llneverforget,onethatwon'tjustholdaplaceinmyheartasthebestThanksgivingever,butwillalwaysstandasoneofthebestdaysofmylife.

ShootingaThreeisEasierbyJayceyFiteMyprompt:What3peopleareyouthemostgratefulfor,inyourlife,andwhy?Well,timetoputawaythecutecostumesthatyouspent$20plusdollarsonandthinkaboutwhenandwheretheThanksgivingdinnerisgoingtobeorbetteryet,thinkaboutwhoboughtyouthosecostumesandtookyoutoallofthosehauntedhouses.I'mbeyondgratefulandblessedforthepeopleGodhasputinmylife.I'mthankfulforsomanypeoplethatIhavenoideahowIwillnarrowitdowntojustthreepeople.Iamthankfulformyparents.TheydosomuchformethatIwillneverbeabletorepaythem.TheymakesureIhaveeverythingIsincerelyneedandhelpmewithanythingIneed.Frompackingmyballbagthenightbeforetowakingmeupinthemorningsforschool.IhavesuchlovingandcaringparentsthatIsometimestakeadvantageof,butIcouldn'taskforbetterparents.AnothergroupthatkeepsmegoingwhenIhaveabaddayorupsetwouldhavetobemybasketballteam.IhaveabsolutelynoideawhatIwoulddowithoutthem,theyallknowhowtomakemelaughandsmilewhenIneeditthemost.Mybasketballteamislikemysecondfamily,wespendeverysingledaytogether.We ightlikesisters,butintheenditalwaysjustbringsuscloser.Ilovethemallsomuchandsothankfulforeachandeveryoneofthem.Finally,IthankGodeverysingledayforthelifethathehasblessedmewithandthepeoplethathavewalkedintomylife.

GratefulbytheNumbersbyKyleJarrellsIamnot,inanyway,ungratefulformylifeoranythingIhave/get.Iappreciatealmosteverythingandeve‐ryonethatsurroundsmeandalloftheamazingopportunitiesthatcomemyway.Thisneededtobeclari iedbeforeIstartthisnarrative.Ihaven'tlostmanypeopleinmylife,buttheoneswhohave‐‐whetheritbeadeath,abrokenfriendship,orwhatevercausespeopletoleave‐‐havereallyimpactedmylifeinamajorway.Thereisoneperson,though,whowasverysigni icanttomylife.Thispersonismygrandmother,PatriciaArmstrong.In2002,onMother'sDay,mygrandmotherfoundoutshehadcancer.Thiswasverydevastatingtomyfamily,obviously.Awhilelaterthecancerwentaway.Sadly,thecancerreturned.Thistimeitwasworse.In2009,shediedfromthecancerspreadingallthroughoutherbody.Ichosemygrandmothertowriteaboutbecauseit'ssomethingthatmostofuscanrelateto.Shewasveryloving,outgoing,andagreatgrandmother.Shewasagreatcook;alwayshavingdinnersforallofthefamilytocometo.ThanksgivingandChristmaswereprobablyherfavoritebecauseshe’djustgoalloutonthecooking.OnChristmas,shecompletelyspoiledeveryonewithpresents.Shealwaysletmeopenavideogamepresentearly,butthatwasonlybecauseIwouldn'tstopbuggingheruntilshesaiditwasok.I'mnotsayingthatInev‐errealizedhowgreatshewas,butit'scertainlyclearertomenow.Aftermygrandmotherdied,herhusband(whowasnotactuallyrelatedtome)didn'tinvitemetoanotherfamilydinner.I,myfather,mymother,andallofmysiblingswerebasicallyrobbedofourrighttovisitmygrandmother'shouse.Ifeltbad,mostlyformymother.InsteadofspendingChristmasatmygrandmother'shouse,my"former‐grandfather"stoppedbymymother'shouselongenoughtodropoffpresentsandbrie lysayhello.Heactuallysaidtomymother,"Itwouldbebestifyoudidn'tcometomyhouseforChristmasbe‐causeitwilltakeawayattentionfrommygranddaughters",whichwerehistwobloodgranddaughters.Lookingbacknow,IwishthatIwouldn'thavetakensomuchforgranted.Iwoulddoanythingtohavemygrandmotherback.AllIcanthinknowisthatsheisinabetterplace;aplacewherecancerceasestoexistanddoesn'truinfamilies;aplacewhereyoudon'ttakethingsorpeopleforgranted.Ofcourse,sinceI'mhuman,Idostilltakethingsforgranted.But,thisissomethingeveryonedoes.Thisissomethingthatwehavetoacceptbecausenoone'sperfect.Ijustknowthatnow,I'msomuchmoregratefulforwhatIhaveandwhatcomesmyway.
