March 2017 1 The Lions Family go the Extra Mile Lions Clubs International District 105EA - News and views including those of District Governor Nigel Folkard Issue 8 March 2017 The Way Ahead for 105 EA The redistricting forms that Lion Clubs completed, and returned by the 31st December 2016, have been analysed. The results are as follows 105 EA had the greatest number of responses forms, returned at 69.8 %. The Lions Clubs in 105 EA voted by nearly 4 to 1 to accept the redistricting proposals of 8 Districts. This would mean that 105 EA would remain intact, and would merge with part of District 105 E, to have a combined membership of 2020. A solid base to continue to grow, so that our District has a sustainable, long term future. This resolution will be on the agenda at MD Convention in Blackpool on the business day the 22nd April 2017, where Lions will have the opportunity, to vote on the long term future of keeping District 105 EA intact. Another resolution which will be on this agenda will be the merging of 105 Districts E and C. If this was voted on and passed, it would mean that these two districts will come out of transition, with more, than 1250 Lion members. But it would leave three 105 Districts in transition - 105 EA, 105 NE and 105 BN with each below 1250 Lion members. If the first resolution is passed e.g. to vote and pass on the 8 Districts, this second resolution of merging E and C will fall, and not be voted on. To book your place on to this MD Convention in Blackpool to vote to keep 105EA intact, please visit the website www.md105convention.uk Marie Curie The Multi District has links with the Marie Curie organization, with many Lions Clubs helping out, on their collection day. A very special day took place in the town of March particularly for its young people, arranged by . This was because twenty one of them were picking up Young Leaders in Service awards.

There is no better way to celebrate the Lions centennial birthday than with a cake!. Club member Lion Mags Horton, unveiled this cake at the

clubs annual cheque presentation evening.Over £7,000 was distributed between 8 charities, the major ones being Clacton’sRNLI station and Tendring Specialist Stroke Services. Donations were also given tothe various stores and local businesses that had assisted the club recently.

Lion Simon Smith from Braintree, M.D SOGB Officer, gave a short talk on his, and theLions 105, involvement with the Special Olympics being held in Sheffield later this year. There will be

21 sports events held at 13 venues over a space of 4 days, with an anticipated 2,500 competitors attendingalong with their support, so there is a great deal of organising to be done.Clacton on Sea Lions handed a cheque for £500 to help with equipment supplies. The club will also havemembers assisting as ‘games makers’.Considered as one of the hardest quiz sheets for several years, based on North American Cities, the winnerswere announced.Despite collecting £2,500 in sales and donations only 33 entries were returned. The winners were all thosewho had entered online, Liz Gibbins from Shipston on Stour, Warwickshire, won £50 with 89 correctanswers. Other winners came from Bushey, Hemel Hempstead and Chesterfield. The money received went to a local charity the Messy Church, a centre for childrenand adults with all forms of disabilities.Clacton on Sea Lions President Liz Godden presented the cheque to Trish Hahn, founder of the Messy Church Centre, who herself has a child with Cerebral Palsey. The money will go to provide much needed equipment, and assist with runningcosts for the Centre. Currently there are only 6 such centres around the country,Trish is opening a 7th in Liverpool later this year.

Trevor Quince was recognised by Lions Clubs International have served the Club for 40 years! 1976 to 2016and beyond! The picture shows him receiving a letter from the International President. He also received a40-year pin which was presented to him by Ian Groome the president of .

As all Lions are committed to helping the local community Trevor hasbeen leading the way for many years. His Health is not what it used tobe but he still plays an active part in March Lions. He is alwaysencouraging members to go that extra mile for the community and isalways first to volunteer where he can. He has brought many people intothe club over the years and would ask anybody reading this to get intouch as Lions has been one of the best things in his life.

The Tendring Peninsula in the north east part of Essex has unfortunately severallocations that are victims to social deprivation. Within this area lies Jaywick, famousfor its image much publicised on Channel 4, to the west of Clacton on Sea.For the past three years, during winter months, the local Citizens Advice Bureauhave opened a pop up shop ‘Winter Warmers’ offering free clothing along with otheradvice to those in need.As part of helping within the Community, , createdanother Club Centennial Project.

Clacton Lions President Liz Godden and her husband Jim, took along to the Centre in Old Road, 25 bagscontaining 300 articles of clothing, especially coats, jumpers, shoes, even toys that had been collected bymembers.Five other bags were taken to the Salvation Army Citadel, where twice a week they hold either a breakfastmorning, or offer hot meals to those who are homeless. Those who required clothing and had ‘slipped thenet’, were given a ticket to redeem necessary items from their supplies at the Salvation Army shop in thetown.1.5 tons of food was collected during the three day December Food Bank collection held at the Tesco storein Clacton. Members of Clacton on Sea Lions had donated over 100 items. It was estimated that 4,500meals could be provided to those in need.Clacton Lions will be collecting again later in the year to assist the Brightlingsea Town Food Bank.
