I am grateful that I still get to experience the excitement of winter weather and unexpected snow days with my children who are also in grades 3 and 5. It is an adventure and sometimes an ex- hausting one. Yet, I will remember the wisdom of other parents who often share how much they miss these days of having young children and they counsel me to cherish these moments when I can. I hope you do the same! Lafayette has the honor of presenting the character education word of the month at the School Board Meeting, which is “perseverance”. Did you know that March is a critical month for our students and their progress? Weather permit- ting, we have twenty-two school days to capitalize on for your children’s academ- ic progress. Therefore, we need all of your support to encourage children to at- tend school each day, arrive on time to class, and arrive mentally and physically prepared for productive days through this rigorous instructional month. I realize this is important all year long, but it is certainly worth mentioning for students to reach their maximum potential this month and through the second semester of the school year as we approach our SOL assessments in May. While I hope we will begin to see a change in climate with the arrival of Spring, I have truly appreciated all of the efforts made by teachers, staff, students, and families through the winter months to maintain the momentum of learning. While all grade levels make necessary adjustments to our calendars and difficult decisions about the pace of our instruction, our teachers always do this with grace and professionalism. For that, I am thankful and we will continue to pro- mote a positive climate for learning and for embracing new opportunities and possibilities. Fourth grade has a busy March ahead of them. In Math, we will study capacity, elapsed time, and geometry. In Sci-ence, we will wrap our solar system unit up and start force, motion, and energy unit. In Social Studies, we will learn about the 20th and 21st centuries, with a focus on the events that occurred in Virginia. In Language Arts, we will work on writing reports about Virginia’s regions. In Reading, we will work on cause and effect, and fact and opinion. We are looking forward to the Shamrock Shuffle on March 10. Sign up information will be sent home soon. Thank you for all the ways you support our school!

GRADE 3 It is hard to believe that we have already reached the month of March! We had so many fun school events in Feb-ruary. A big thanks to all the parents and students who attended Family Math and Reading Night at the Bragg Hill Family Life Center; we hope you enjoyed yourselves as much as we did! We also had a fabulous time at our Valen-tine’s Day classroom party and at Jump Rope for Heart. In Math, students will spend the beginning of March finishing up geometry. Next, we will begin a new unit where students will learn how to organize and collect data using different types of graphs and line plots. Towards the end of March, we will begin a unit on probability where we will list all possible out-comes for a given situation. Please continue to work with your children at home to help them master their multiplication facts. Students are responsible for learning the multiplication facts for the numbers 0-12. Students will continue to become wonderful readers while we finish up on our unit on identifying the main idea and supporting details within a fictional text. We will soon begin to use word reference resources, including a thesaurus and identify antonyms and synonyms. In Language Arts, students will work on writing narratives. In Science, we will learn natural cycles. Students will investigate and understand basic patterns and cycles occurring in nature. Key concepts include: 1. Patterns of natural events such as day and night, seasonal changes, simple phases of the moon, and tides 2. Animal life cycles, and 3. Plant life cycles. In Social Studies, students will recognize the importance of government in the community, Virginia, and the United States of America by explaining the purpose of rules and laws, the basic purposes of government are to make laws, carry out laws, and decide if laws have been broken, and that government protects the rights and property of individu-als. We will also touch upon the basic principles that form the foundation of a republican form of government by de-scribing the individual rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness and equality under the law. Students will also describe how people can serve the community, state, and nation.

GRADE 4

GRADE 5 Fifth grade will be busy in March! Students will complete their third quarter nine-weeks test at the end of the month. In Reading, students are focusing on reviewing text structures and comprehension strategies in order to pre-pare for the quarterly assessment. Teachers are working together to develop fun, creative methods in order to review these important concepts. In other reading news, the “50 Book Challenge” is still gong strong. Please continue to en-courage your child to read at home. In Writing, the students are learning how to conduct research using both print and online sources. We are focusing on the topic of Westward Expansion; students will have the opportunity to research related themes such as the Gold Rush, the Oregon Trail, and the explorations of Lewis and Clark. In Science, we are focusing on two new units as well as reviewing for our upcoming SOL test. Our first unit is about the changing of Earth’s surface and includes concepts such as the rock cycle, weathering, and erosion. Our following unit will be on the scientific method. This unit is very important and is often challenging for students; 25% of our SOL test questions are related to this strand. Having your child review on SOL Pass (222.solpass.org) is a great way to help him/her better understand these key concepts. Students are focusing on patterns, functions, and algebra in math class. They also continue to gain additional reinforcement of skills on Cortez (our online math program) each week. We are pushing back our next social studies unit until the fourth marking period to allow for adequate time to assess and reme-

OLWEUS BULLYING PREVENTION PROGRAM

Bullying is when someone repeatedly and on purpose says or does mean or hurtful things to an-other person who has a hard time defending

himself or herself. OUR SCHOOLS ANTI-BULLYING RULES

1. We will not bully others. 2. We will try to help students who are bullied. 3. We will try to include students who are left out. 4. If we know that somebody is being bullied, we will tell an adult at school and an adult at home.

The goals of OBPP are to reduce bullying problems and prevent new bullying problems from happening. The program also works to make relationships better among students. The program is for all students, not just those who are being bullied or who are bully-ing others. Parents and guardians play a key role in this program. It will be very important that you take any bullying seriously and tell our school staff. Bullying should not be seen as “kids being kids” or something that students just need to deal with. Having a safe school experience is something that all students should be able to enjoy.
