ROLL AWAY THE STONE – an event in Princes Street Gardens

I am writing to every congregation to let you know that plans for an exciting celebration during the 2011 General Assembly are gathering pace; plans that can involve every congregation. We’re calling it ROLL AWAY THE STONE.

What’s ROLL AWAY THE STONE all about? On General Assembly Sunday, 22 May 2011 from 1 pm till 6 pm, the Church will take over a large area of Princes Street Gardens in Edinburgh for a time of Celebration, Inspiration and Discovery.

Significance comes from the Cross and resurrection life flows from the Tomb. So our celebration, inspiration and discovery will begin with reflections around a huge cross in the garden area near the Ross Bandstand. Meantime at the Bandstand itself, in the picturesque avenue and fountain areas, and in St Cuthbert’s Church at the west end of the Gardens there will be space for worship, praise and singing; there will be children’s and youth areas, picnic space, places to eat and chat, displays and stalls representing the whole breadth of the Church’s life and witness.

Who should come?Entry to the event will be completely free. Clearly commissioners, delegates and visitors to the General Assembly will be there (there will be no Holyrood Garden Party this year). But there’s also a fantastic opportunity to have lots of people from every congregation across the country; more than that, there’s a chance to interact with the local community and visitors to Edinburgh who are simply walking through this beautiful public space. Imagine Prince’s Street Gardens on 22 May with thousands of people milling around celebrating, being inspired, discovering…

What should we do now?I’ll be in touch again as soon as I have more information to share. For example one of the features will be a massed choir with congregational representation from all over Scotland coming together to sing. So why not begin planning how your congregation would like to be involved in ROLL AWAY THE STONE.

With best wishes

Rev John ChalmersPrincipal Clerk

Bible Search

There are 30 books in the bible in this paragraph. Can you find them?

This is a most remarkable puzzle. It was found by a gentleman in an aeroplane seat pocket, on a flight from Los Angeles to Honolulu, keeping him occupied for hours. He enjoyed it so much he passed it on to some friends. One friend from Illinois worked on this while fishing from his John boat. Another friend studied it while playing

his banjo. Elaine Taylor, a columnist friend, was so intrigued by it she mentioned it in her weekly newspaper column. Another friend judges the job of solving this puzzle so involving, she brews a cup of tea to help her nerves. There will be some names that are really easy to spot. That’s a fact. Some people, however, will soon find themselves in a jam; especially since the book names are not necessarily capitalised. Truthfully, from answers we get, we are forced to admit it usually takes a minister or a scholar to see some of them at the worst. Research has shown that something in our genes is responsible for the difficulty we have in seeing the books in this paragraph. During a recent fund raising event which featured this puzzle, the Alpha Delta Phi lemonade booth set a new record. The local paper, the Chronicle, surveyed over 200 patrons who reported that this puzzle was one of the most difficult they had ever seen. As Daniel Humana humbly puts it, “The books are all right here in plain view hidden from sight.” Those able to find all of them will hear great lamentations from those who have to be shown. One revelation that may help is that books like Timothy and Samuel may occur without their numbers. Also, keep in mind that punctuation and spaces in the middle are normal. A chipper attitude will help you compete really well against those who claim to know the answers. Remember, there is no need for a mad exodus; there really are 30 books of the Bible lurking somewhere in this paragraph waiting to be found. God bless.

Winter Snow

Having just suffered the worst December weather in a 100 years can I just say a big thank you to all those involved in clearing snow at the West Kirk whether it was with a tractor, a JCB or a shovel. Your help was much appreciated.

Stewart MacRae

HM Revenue and Customs received a letter from a man who, after converting to Christianity, was reconsidering his life:

“I am having sleepless nights because of the burden of my past. I am therefore enclosing £100, which I forgot to declare.

PS If I still can’t get to sleep I will send the rest.”

World Day of Prayer - Friday 4 March 2011

Times of services will be advertised later. Hopefully, we will have a service led by the primary schools (in Polbeth Harwood Church) and one in the sheltered housing complex in West Calder as well as the usual evening service in Polbeth Harwood Church.
