IMR falls in Jujomura Block :

    BISWAs intervention appreciated

    BOOK-POST

    The efforts of

    'BISWA' to bring down the

    infant mortality rate (IMR)

    yields positive results in the

    backward Jujomura block

    of Sambalpur district. Of

course, it is a matter to get

    complacent that the rate of

    infant mortality has been

reduced to a great extent in

    Sambalpur district due to

public awareness, introduction ofJanani Express in the village areas,

    institutional delivery and overall health

care of the maternal mothers. But

Jujomura block set a rec ord with

lowest IMR all over the district.

However, the scenery was not that

as it is now. The IMR of Jujomura

block was 21 in the year 2008. It came

down to 15 in 2009. But it witnessed a

drastic fall in the year 2010 (by June)

and reached only 4 (four). And

needless to say that it became possible

due to intervention of 'BISWA'through the CHIN project in this

    particular block.

After our inter vention, we first

tried to resolve the conflict among the

    community and the service providers

that helped in establishing a trust

    among the service providers and

    community. Our effort got successful

and the common people particularlythe expecting mothers and their in-

laws accepted the guidelines for safe

delivery of babies and their healthy

    nurturing afterwards. Not only IMR,

    there has been remarkable

A Success Story : Hemanta Barik

a Self Sufficient Youth NowMr Hemanta Barik was a mentally

ill person. But initial days were not the

same for him. Rather he was a first

class student throughout his career and

it was quite obvious for him to be

highly ambitious. He wanted to enter into a

    government job. But unfortunately he

failed in +2 examination for which he

was deeply shocked. Matter didn't end

there. His married sister Sujata came

    back from her father-in-law's house

due to the ruthless torture by the in-

laws. That made Hemanta to get

    depressed further. Misfortune never

comes alone. The mother of Hemanta

also breathed her last untimely. By

seeing all these at a very tender age, depression in Hemanta became severe

    and he became mentally ill.

At the age of 25, his father told him

to get married and he obeyed the old

father. After marriage when his wife

came to know about his mental illness

she left him and went back to her

    father's house. Many times Hemanta

accompanied by his father went to his

wife's house to convince her to come

back. But the lady didn't listen, rather

she preferred a second marriage. When Hemanta came to know about

the second marriage of his wife, he

    became violent and aggressive. He

blamed his father for all these and

started beating his father. Soon his

    father also became mentally ill.

One of the field staff of 'BISWA'

came to know about the problem of

this family and tried to intervene.

    'BISWA' staff asked Hemanta, his

sister Sujata and father Mr Laluji Barik

to come to office. They were provided

proper medical treatment by the BNI

staff. After being treated regularly, they

    became completely stable. By seeing

    their improvement, the organization

decided to help Hemanta Barik for

    livelihood support. Availing a loan

    from 'BISWA', Hemanta opened a

saloon in his village. Now he is self-

dependent and capable enough to earn

for the entire family. The family iscapable enough to buy their medicine

    and meet other requirements also.

    Hemanta's father Mr Laluji Barik

is now searching another suitable girl

to get him married again. Now he is

independent enough to take care of

himself as well as his family.

    EditorialNew Years Promise

New Year Day marks the beginning of a year and begins

with joy, merrymaking and amusement. The English New

Year i.e. 1st January has been accepted world over as the

New Year's Day even if different countries and religion

have their own day to begin with. But 1st January is now

widely accepted as the New Year day for majority of the

world population without any regional or religious bias.

For us it is an important day not for the sake of marry-

making or amusement but for setting goals for the future

since we are determined to bring in development for the

lives of the poor and marginalised people of the state as

well as whole of the countr y through our five pillar

    activities.

We have already passed 16 years. Within this short span

of time our achievement is in no way less. Though we

don't want to beat our own drum but this is the reality andsuccess always touches our feet for our sincerity,

determination, hard work and over all time bound action

to achieve any difficult target. The reputation of 'BISWA'

is well appreciated now. And New Year reminds us of the

tasks ahead. Even if we have become successful in every

front, there is no point for self-complacency or over

satisfaction. We all in 'BISWA' family must remember this

    vital point.

We can't live peacefully unless the society around us is

comfortable and happy. We have to look into their

happiness if we want to live happily. That is the very

concept of social science and practically true.Hence, we in 'BISWA', on this New Year's Day, must

take the oath to bring smile to everyone's lip. The Indian

philosophy says - "Nara Seba hin Narayan Seba"- (service

to mankind is service to God). And practically we are

exactly doing the same here and it needs to be further

accelerated. Our New Year promise ought to be dedicated

for the Nara Narayan (Man in the form of God).

BISWA Chairman Conferred Doctorate DegreeThe Foreign Policy Research

    Institute of India conferred

    Honoris Causa (Doctorate

Degree) to Mr K C Malick the

    chairman of 'BISWA' for his

    outstanding contribution in social

service and dedication for thecause of the poor and down

    trodden.

    In a colourful function at

    India International Centre New

Delhi Dr K P S Gill conferred the

    Degree to Mr Malick where

Ambas sa dor s and Hi gh

    Commissioners of more than 100

countries , many a dignitaries from all

over the country, the former chief

    minister of Haryana Mr Om

    Prakash Chautala, MP of Odisha

    Dr Prasanna Pattasani were present.

Dr Gill, in high words, praised the

contribution of Mr Malick for the

socio-economic upliftment of thepoor and downtrodden.

The fri ends, wel l-w ish er s,

important citizens of the state and

    the staff of 'BISWA' congratulated

Mr Malick for this achievement. It

needs a mention here that Foreign

    Policy Research Institute of India

    previously conferred this prestigious

degree to the Prime Minister of Nepal.

improvement in the MMR also, admit the health

    department in the district.

A sincere effort by all our st aff engaged in the

project also helped to achieve the result as desired

and they are trying to bring in further development.

The following table shows the infant mortality rate

(IMR) in Sambalpur district for three years and

Jujomura in particular. Needless t o say that t his has

become possible only for the intervention of 'BISWA'

and the sincerity of our staff to the cause.

The ASHA workers also helped in this endeavour.

The situation was not t hat much c onducive in the

beginning. They were reluctant to accept the

suggestion of 'BISWA' staff for this purpose.

But after a series of interactions and training

programmes they were clarified their roles and

responsibility as an ASHA. Training programmes for

the ASHAs enhanced their capacity and motivated

them. These training modules included a series of

participatory dialogue, games, energiser etc. Block

officials like block programme officer (BPO), block

extension educator (BEE), medical officer of

Padibahal Dr. Sanjeev Supkar, lady health visitor

(LHV), maternal & child health (MCH) coordinatoretc were also part of the trainings.

Although some of them were quite aware of their

responsibilities but they were hardly doing any. But

after our intervention they have become very much

active in their work. There had been cases of cer tain

ASHAs who have really brought about a change and

are role model for the others. Initially due to our

    Laxmipriyas Winter Sale Dhamaka

    Winter Sale Dhamaka - a

    marketing event of Laxmipriya

    Micro Enterprises Pvt Ltd was

    conducted successfully on 31st

    December 2010 at 'BISWA' central

    office premises with

    the objective of

    exhibition and sales

    promotion of seasonal

    winter c loth mater ials

    i.e. Blankets, Shawls,

    Sweaters, Jackets and

    Bed covers of better

    quality from the reputed companies

    from Delhi and Ludhiana. 10%

    price discount on original market

value was allowed for the benefit

    and satisfaction of the staff

    customers of 'BISWA' and

    its group of agencies. The

    event was formally

inaugurated by Dr. K CMalick chairman-cum-

    managing director of

    LMPL along with the

    distinguished guests,

    journalists from both print and

    electronics media. More than 500

buyers who are none other than our

staff availed the benefit of the winter

    sale dhamaka and discounted price

offer. The sale on this particular day

    touched Rs.30,000. Mr Ramesh

    Chandra Das Manager LMPL

organized the event. Mr Prahlad Sethy

    intervention many of them thought

'BISWA' to be anti- ASHA. They evenrefused to cooperate and coordinate.

Finally after a lot of dialogue and

    training sessions, they were convinced

that 'BISWA' was not against them,

rather the motto was to serve the

maternal mothers and the new borne

    babies through sincere duties. This

resulted in getting an unexpected result

for Jujomura as seen above from the

    government statistics.

DGM and Mr Malay Kumar Giri GM

and all staff of LMPL facilitated theprocess to satisfy the customers'

demand. Mr Dash the manager of

    LMPL was seen highlighting the

speciality of the winter garments to

promote sale that helped costumers to

amuse along with purchasing. Mr Dash

also showed magic to the customers

    during the winter dhamaka sale.
