Dental health plays a vital role inthe overall health and wellness ofyour pet. Dental problems can becaused by numerous other healthproblems.

Your pets' teeth should bechecked by your vet once or twice ayear to ensure a healthy mouth and ahealthy pet. Veterinary dentistry caninclude cleaning, polishing, extractions and repair.

The procedures require sedationand should only be performed by avet. Dental radiographs are anotherimportant part of a thorough oralexam and will be performed at thetime of dental cleaning. Radiographsallow us to evaluate the tooth healthunder the gum line.

There are many signs that canindicate the need for an exam orcleaning. These include bad breath, broken or loose teeth, retained babyteeth, tarter buildup, abnormalchewing or drooling, reducedappetite, pain around the mouth,blood-tinged saliva and swellingaround the mouth.

Periodontal disease is verycommon in cats and dogs. By thetime your pet is three years old, theywill likely have signs of dentaldisease. Early detection andtreatment are critical. Plaque iswhere the disease process begins.Plaque hardens into tarter, whichthen damages the gum line and setsthe stage for infection.

We recommend bi-annual oralexams to ensure your pet maintainstheir best health. February isNational Pet Dental Health Monthand we are offering a free dentalprophylaxis with scaling andradiographs for felines with a fullcomprehensive wellness panel.

Cats that are current on vaccinationsor are made current on vaccinationsduring February are eligible toreceive a free dental cleaning withthe purchase of our in-housewellness panel.

This utilizes samples to give acomprehensive look into your pet'shealth including organ function, urinary health, blood health, parasitestatus and more.

The wellness panel is $275 andincludes a blood cell count, bloodchemistries, electrolytes, thyroidtest, urinalysis and intestinal parasitescreening.

Canines with a scheduled dentalcleaning in February will receive acomplimentary pre-anesthetic bloodchemistry panel.

Page 14 February 1, 2019The LillianAs a child, you threw temper

tantrums to get your own way… notthat it worked. As a newlywed, youhad to learn how to compromiseinstead of fighting for control, inorder to save your marriage andsanity. As a parent, you had to pickand choose your fights to keep yourteenagers under control.

And as empty-nesters, you hadto learn all over again how tocompromise with your spouse…especially when the TV volume isblaring sports 24/7 and they refuse tohand over the remote.

So one would think that livingalone is ideal. Because when you’reliving alone, everything is underyour control, like the Burger Kingslogan - ‘have it your way.’

Well, ‘having it my way’ is notthe way it works in my house.Because I constantly have to fight forcontrol. Noise control that is.

Yes, I realize the racket in myhouse is my fault. I brought it onmyself with all the critters I’verescued and/or collected.

When I walk in the front door,my pack of dogs start jumping andbarkingwith excitement. Some pups

just want a pat on the head or tummyrubs, while the elderly dogs need toget the heck out to go potty. Thenwith all the yipping commotion, theparrots squawk and begin to screech,“Get out, get out.Go outside.Get outnow.”

Consequently, I have to fuss atmy furry or feathered friends byscolding them with “Now hush.”

But at night, if someone growls, barks or the birds start whisperingafter the lights are out, I simply say ina gruff tone, “Knock it off, guys.”However, when the phone rings, or adelivery person arrives, all hell tendsto break loose.

Dogs start howling and the birdsactually will bark - sounding like thedogs. My eardrums vibrate in pain. And thenat thatpoint, I have tohollerat the top of my lungs, “Hey!”

And the house will instantly gosilent, so then can I follow up with a

firm, “Stop it.” And happily, I’mback in control.

Last Sunday, it was a cold butsunny morning. My household wasunbelievably calm. The dogs weresnoozing or licking their paws infront of the fireplace. The parrotswere perched in their favorite spots, cracking peanuts that I’d just handedout.

Frankly, the peace and quiet wassoheavenly, I brokeout in song. “It’sa beautiful morning. Sundaymorning. I think I’ll go outsideawhile and just smile. It’s a beautifulmorning. Sunday morning.”

Ha, I was cracking myself upbecause I remember the tune buttotally forgot the words, so I just ad-libbed.

Several of thedogs stoppedwhatthey were doing, raised their headsand watched as I twirled around thekitchen waving my arms.

So just to be silly, I sang louder.Until I heard a screeching, “Hey,”which tookmeby surprise, andmademe pause mid-note.

Then simultaneously, Sammyand Sidney, my two umbrellacockatoos, confidently squawked,“Stop it!”

Lillian United Methodist Church isseeking a Part-Time Youth Directorwith a commitment to Christ and

a desire to lead youth from7th– 12th grade in developing a

relationship with Christ.

In the Gospel of John chapter15:9-17, we read these words: “Asthe Father has loved me, so have Ilovedyou.Nowremain inmy love. Ifyou keep my commands, you willremain inmy love, just as I have keptmy Father’s commands and remainin his love. I have told you this so thatmy joy may be in you and that yourjoy may be complete. My commandis this: Love each other as I haveloved you. Greater love has no onethan this: to lay down one’s life forone’s friends. You are my friends ifyou do what I command. I no longercall you servants, because a servantdoes not knowhismaster’s business.Instead, I have called you friends, foreverything that I learned from myFather I have made known to you.You did not choose me, but I choseyou and appointed you so that youmight go and bear fruit--fruit thatwill last--and so that whatever youask in my name the Father will giveyou. This is my command: Loveeach other.”

We are born totally self-centered and totally helpless. Inorder to survive in this world wemustmakeour needs known. If thoseneeds aremet, then wewill probablygrow to love those meeting ourneeds. But is that really love?We saythat children have to be taught tohate, but isn’t that true of love as

well? Think how difficult it is toteach a child to share. Is it reallysomething that happens naturally? Isit something that comes fromwithin?Or is it somethingwe learnasinfants and then as children, first ofall, from our primary caregivers andthen from those around us?

C.S. Lewis, distinguishedbetween “need love” and “gift love.”Need love should be self-evident. Itis the most common kind of love inour world. I love you because youmeet my needs. It might be that myself-esteem is boosted when I amwith you or it might be simply myneed to be loved. Most of us have aneed for companionship. Need loveis always born of emptiness. Theperson characterized by need love isalways grasping to attain from otherthings or values which he or shecovets. Lewis contends that manytimes when we humans say toanother, “I love you,” what we arereallymeaning is, “I needyou, Iwantyou. You have a value that I verymuch desire to make my own, nomatter what the consequencemay beto you.”

Now contrast that with whatLewis calls “gift love.” Instead ofbeing born of emptiness or lack, thisform of loving is born of fullness. The goal of gift love is to enrich andenhance the person whom we loverather than to extract value fromthem. “Gift love moves out to blessand to increase rather than to acquireor to diminish. Gift love is more likea bountiful, artesian well thatcontinues to overflow than a vacuumor a black hole.” Lewis concludesthat iswhatGod’s love is all about. Inother words, God’s love is gift love, not need love. This, of course, is themeaning of agape love.

Arewe capable of agape love -loving as God loves? To a certainextent we are, but this does nothappen naturally for human beings. For us to substitute gift love for needlove, wemust go to the sourceof loveand the source of all love is God.Jesus says in our lesson for today,“As the Father has lovedme, so haveI loved you.” Love, then, doesn’tcome from within - it comes fromabove!

Later, in his first epistle Johnwrites, “Dear friends, let us love oneanother, for love comes from God.”Where does love come from? Itcomes from God. John continues,“Everyone who loves has been bornof God and knows God. Whoeverdoes not love does not know God,because God is love.” So, that is the

answer to the first question: wheredoes love come from? It comes fromGod. Then John adds, “This is howGod showed his love among us: Hesent his one and only Son into theworld that we might live throughhim. This is love: not that we lovedGod, but that he loved us and sent hisSon as an atoning sacrifice for oursins.” (1 John 4:7-11).

The ultimate personificationof LOVE is Jesus Christ. “This ishowGod showed his love among us:He sent his one and only Son into theworld that we might live throughhim. This is love: not that we lovedGod, but that he loved us and sent hisSon as an atoning sacrifice for oursins.” That is what love looks likeand this love that we receive as a giftis only experienced when we pass iton to others. Jesus said love eachother as I have loved you.

Where does love come from?It comes fromGod alone. What doesit look like? It looks like a manhanging on a cross in our behalf. What does such love require out ofus? It requires us to move beyondneed love to gift love.

To look around at others whoare in need of God’s love and to giveit to them - not asking what they cando for us, but remembering whatChrist has done for us. “This is mycommand,” Jesus said to hisdisciples, and also to us: “Love eachother.”

Science never stands still. Evenafter discoveries are made anddeveloped, perfecting thistechnology is always in motion.

DNA is one of those ever-improving advances in science.Because of this, if you had yourDNAdone on Ancestry or any of the othergenealogical websites and haven’tchecked it in the last six months, youmight want to check it again becausetesting keeps improving, results keepchanging.

Your DNA doesn’t change, butresults become clearer and moredetailed.

Another reason for the update isdue to “markers.”Results onany typeof testing have to have a baseline.DNA is no different. For mostAmericans, the baseline or markerhas to come from a place in Europe,Asia orAfrica since theU.S. is youngand is a melting pot of nationalities.

If there are no “markers” from aspecific area, there isn’t anything tocompare a certain genetic marker inyour DNA to. This is why somepeople think the testing doesn’twork, because their ancestryconnection to a remote tribe inAnywhere, Planet Earth, doesn’tshow up in the test results.

If you study early history, you’dbe amazed at the migration of thetribes of Europe. Dublin, Ireland andNormandy, France, for instance, were originally settled by Vikings, mostly Danes, but also combinationsof Swedes, Norwegians and Danes. They were often called the NorthMen or Norse. Parts of Europe, Asiaand Africa were conquered by theRomans during their reign fromabout 509 BC to 476 AD. And therewere many tribes that moved aroundand settled areas, their names

vanishing into the unknown as theyblended in with other peoples of thearea. Never assume you know yourentire genetic history.

Of course, love has to bementioned in February. Perhaps themost written about subject in historyand too often taken for granted ormisunderstood. Some people think ifyou lovesomeone, youown them.Noyou don’t and jealousy is a heavydestructive burden to carry.

Somepeople think that that zingyspecial feeling you have when youfirst fall for someone represents loveand when that feeling wears off, itmeans you don’t love them anymore.

I imagine a lot of divorces evolvearound that bit of hogwash. Orperhaps it is the fact that after acouple gets married, they start actinglike themselves in front of each otherinstead of the false front. The fantasyends.

There are many reasons whycouples break up and sometimes it isthe right thing to do, especially if it isan abusive relationship. Love needsto be nurtured. A good relationshipmeans a lot of things, but it alwaysincludes compromise on both sides.

Ask anyone who has beenmarried over 50 years and I’ll betthey’ll tell you to say “I love you”every single day, at least once. Neverleave the house or go to bed angry, nothing is worth it.

It is awonderful thing to love andbe loved. Some individuals in thisworld do not know what that feelslike. Sonnets from the Portuguese#43 byElizabethBarrett Browning isa favorite of mine. “How do I lovethee? Let me count the ways….”

Couples who have been marriedfor a long time should know a deepand understanding love. I ran acrossthe following passage from a recentnovel I read and itmade perfect senseto me. Enjoy.

“There’s a beauty, and there’s astrength, you know, that grows onlyin a long walk together in the samedirection.” From "ATangledMercy"by Joy Jordon-Lake.

Until next month….
