Agnes Sorel, the famous Mistress of the king of France Charles VII (who reigned 1422-1461)
You can ask any kid in France if they know who is Charles VII, they probably don’t. But most will know who is Joan of Arc (who fought the English for that king), and quite a number will have heard about Agnes Sorel, the king’s mistress. What made the eternal glory of Sorel is a painting by Jean Fouquet, representing her as the Madonna with a naked breast, and surrounded by red and blue angels, The painting is known as the Diptyque de Melun. This portrait is at the Museum of arts in Antwerp.
