LEEA ROADSHOWS

2016 GOLF DAY

AND MORE!

The LEEA administration and executive team have moved to new premises. The new offices are situated in Ramsay Court, which is still in the association’s long-time home in Hinchingbrooke Business Park, Huntingdon

and only a stone’s throw away from the original facility in Osprey Court.

The Osprey Court premises are currently undergoing a significant refit to turn them into a dedicated training centre to provide students with world-class facilities to fulfill LEEA certificates and diploma courses.

Membership and operational matters will be overseen in the new building, with Osprey Court housing all LEEA Academy and training-related activity.

The new postal address is 3 Ramsay Court, Hinchingbrooke Business Park, Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, PE29 6FY, UK.

Work continues on the new online LEEA

Academy courses. Some are already live and initial feedback from students has been excellent. The deadline for the remaining major

courses is rapidly approaching and the team is working hard to complete this stage of the project. This is only the first stage of a major overhaul and development of the training programmes available from the association and we are confident that all members will benefit from the results.

The Dubai office is open and operating well—apart from a few minor teething problems. Kevin Crilly has already started to carry out audits across the region and will be working on a number of projects with key stakeholders. The management and administration teams have moved into our new offices in Huntingdon and work is well advanced on improving the training centre.

Low oil prices continues to impact members around the world. Recent indications are that prices are recovering slightly but it will be a long time before they reach previous levels. On a positive note, I visited PDO in Oman recently and they have two major investments which are going ahead despite the oil price. Let’s hope that other companies take the same positive view and that business activity increases as a result.

Many members in the UK have concerns about the upcoming referendum on UK membership of the European Union.

Whatever the result there should be no change in the relationships between the association and its members around the world. But with the outcome of the vote almost impossible to predict UK members are concerned about the consequences of a possible withdrawal. Having spoken to others in the association sector, some of whom work in Brussels, the effects of a withdrawal could be many and varied depending upon the subsequent negotiations.

One senior figure I spoke to, who is active in Brussels, suggested it could take up to 10 years to negotiate new relationships. Not a good situation for businesses looking for stability. As soon as there is anything concrete to report the association will do its best to advise the membership.

The first roadshow of 2016 took place in Durham and attracted just under 90 attendees. Keep an eye on the website for details of all upcoming events. Plans for LiftEx 2016 in Aberdeen are well advanced. With a full conference programme, networking opportunities and a wide range of exhibitors, this is an event not to be missed. Further details are in this issue of The Lifting Engineer and on the website.

We will be supporting a Ministry of Labour event in Bahrain in April followed immediately by members meetings in Perth and Brisbane. I look forward to seeing members at these upcoming events.

HOT TOPICS LiftEx HEADS TO ABERDEEN

LiftEx, the UK’s only exhibition and industry conference dedicated

to overhead lifting and safe work at height, is heading to Aberdeen.

Now in its 12th year, LiftEx 2016 will take place on Wednesday 23 and Thursday 24 November at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre.

Over 100 trade exhibitors are expected to take part, and the LiftEx Industry Conference will once again bring together an impressive line-up of respected speakers on topics related to safe, legal and efficient overhead lifting.

The popular Innovation Fast Pitch event also returns, giving visitors a quick-fire introduction to the latest technologies and applications in this vital industry sector. In addition to end users and suppliers of lifting equipment, LiftEx will therefore prove invaluable to professionals working in fields such as health and safety, training, plant engineering and maintenance.

“I’m delighted that we are taking LiftEx to Europe’s ‘Energy Capital’ for the first time in its history,” said Geoff Holden, chief executive, LEEA. “The energy, offshore and maritime sectors are all heavily reliant on overhead lifting, and LiftEx 2016 offers the local business community an outstanding opportunity to catch up with recent developments in training, accreditation, legislation, products and services.”

A limited number of sponsorship and exhibiting opportunities are currently available. For more details, contact Leah Phelps on +44 (0)7795 1106 46 or email [email protected].

Call for PapersLEEA has issued a Call for Papers ahead of the LiftEx Conference. Presentations should be non-commercial, technical or advisory and delivered by senior company representatives or lifting

industry authorities. Send prospective presentation summaries to

[email protected].

“The Lifting Engineer is designed to give members an update on industry activities, LEEA activities and areas that would be of technical interest to the membership. Whilst we are happy to identify new innovations and technical advances within the industry, we do not see it as a platform for sales promotion or marketing of product launches. Send stories for consideration to [email protected].” — LEEA

THE LIFTING ENGINEER VOLUME 2 ● ISSUE NUMBER 7 ● MARCH-APRIL 2016

LEEA has announced that its second road-show of 2016 will take place in Telford on

Tuesday 7 June. The ‘Lifting the Load—Out on the Road’ concept will bring seminars, a small exhibition and networking to the Atcham Suite, Telford International Centre, from 10m to 3pm.

Ian Simpson, HM Principal Specialist Inspector of Health & Safety, Mechanical Engineering, at the UK’s Health and Safety Executive (HSE), will deliver a presenta-tion on crane accidents. He will explore accidents by crane type, including overhead travelling cranes, material handling cranes and lifting gantries, before outlining com-mon accidents and sharing a series of case studies.

See how poor slinging, load stability, poor choice or availability of lifting accessories, space issues, long loads, and offset centres of gravity have all had a devastating impact on lifting applications in recent years.

Simpson will follow a paper by LEEA’s Craig Morelli, senior training officer, who will talk about Proficiency Testing. Morelli will cover proficiency testing carried out in 2014 and 2015 for the Quality and Conformity Council of Abu Dhabi. He will demonstrate how the proficiency testing was organised, the equipment included, the outcomes achieved and highlight the benefits this program has for LEEA members.

Each presentation will also include a question and answer session to enable attendees to interact with the presenter and get more details on the subject matter.

The Telford roadshow is free to attend and includes a complementary buffet lunch. Doors open at 10am before presentations begin at 11am.

Twenty spaces are available for LEEA members to bring a roller banner or similar, charged at £200 +VAT. Email [email protected] to book a stand or confirm attendance.

HOIST UK WELCOMES TECHNICAL SALES ENGINEER

Hoist UK has named Colin Jones technical sales engineer. He has been in the lifting

industry for almost 25 years, having started as a lifting equipment engineer before becoming a site supervisor, works manager, and general manager. Jones supports this wealth of experience with formal LEEA qualifications.

Paul Jordan, director, Hoist UK, said: “Having Colin join our team is a major asset for the company, as it is always difficult to employ a technical engineer with a proven track record in the industry. He has a vast knowledge of the lifting equipment sector, and he will be a real advantage to us as the company grows, especially assisting with specialist projects.”

Jones said: “I have known Paul and the team

for many years and I was happy to be given the opportunity to work for such a dynamic and growing company. Their technical approach to project-based work and their depth of product knowledge that allows them to attract such high profile projects excites me. I am really looking forward to the fresh challenge, and particularly working on projects like ISO-rated clean room systems, ATEX applications and to be working more within the entertainment industry.”

Louise Dickson, general manager, said: “We are pleased to welcome Colin to the Hoist UK family; he has got a great personality and will be a real asset on site, advising clients and in the office mentoring some of our other staff that are new to the industry.”
