It was then eleven years since the Institution had begun its experiments with wireless by installing a wireless-telegraphy receiving and transmitting set in the life-boat at Bosslare Harbour, Co. Wexford. That is the only wireless telegraphy set that has been put in a life-lxmt, and it con- tinued in use until June, 1948. Our Oext experiment M r as with radio-tele- phony in 1929, and when that article was written in 1937 we had twenty-six boats with radio-telephony sets for teceiving and sending messages, and three with sets for receiving only. Ten more years have now passed. Much has happened in those ten years; * good deal has been learnt from the experience of the war; many improve- ments have been made in the design and construction of radio apparatus; and many more life-boats have been fitted with radio-telephony; but the- conditions under which wireless works in life-boats, .and the limitations on its use in them, have not greatly altered in the past ten, or indeed in the past twenty years. A Protection Against the Sea Our first and greatest difficulty has always been that wireless apparatus must be very carefully protected from the water, and that a life-boat is a small boat which has to do her work in the worst weather, and has often to travel smothered in the seas, with her decks awash and her cockpits filled. Then there are very serious limita- tions in the size and weight and power of the apparatus that can be used, and the height of the aerial which can be carried on a life-boat. The chief use of wireless in a life-boat is to keep her in touch with the shore when she is at sea. She does it through the shore wireless stations of the General Post Office, and through certain lighthouses, lightvessels and coastguard stations. These stations have not powerful trans- mitters like the B.B.C.; most of them work on a fraction of one kilowatt, where the B.B.C. is working on 50 to 200; their messages have to be picked up on life-boats by aerials which, to be really effective, require much higher masts than any life-boat could carry; and they have to be heard in the midst of the noise of wind and sea and engines. AN article by my predecessor on the useof wireless in lite-boats appeared inthe number of this journal for Decem-ber, 1937. Thatis the only wireless telegraphy set thathas been put in a life-lxmt, and it con-tinued in use until June, 1948. Ten more years have now passed.Much has happened in those ten years;* good deal has been learnt from theexperience of the war; many improve-ments have been made in the designand construction of radio apparatus;and many more life-boats have beenfitted with radio-telephony; but the-conditions under which wireless worksin life-boats, .and the limitations onits use in them, have not greatly alteredin the past ten, or indeed in the pasttwenty years.

A

Protection Against the SeaOur first and greatest difficulty has

always been that wireless apparatusmust be very carefully protected fromthe water, and that a life-boat is a smallboat which has to do her work in theworst weather, and has often to travelsmothered in the seas, with her decksawash and her cockpits filled.

Then there are very serious limita-tions in the size and weight and powerof the apparatus that can be used, andthe height of the aerial which can becarried on a life-boat. The chief useof wireless in a life-boat is to keepher in touch with the shore when she isat sea. She does it through the shorewireless stations of the General PostOffice, and through certain lighthouses,lightvessels and coastguard stations.These stations have not powerful trans-mitters like the B.B.C.; most of themwork on a fraction of one kilowatt,where the B.B.C. is working on 50 to200; their messages have to be pickedup on life-boats by aerials which, to bereally effective, require much highermasts than any life-boat could carry;and they have to be heard in the midstof the noise of wind and sea and engines.Those who, in the silence and comfort

of their own rooms can, through apowerful transmitter of the B.B.C.,hear with ease a programme from theother side of the world, can hardlybegin to understand the difficultieswhich a life-boat mechanic—sitting athis controls above the engine-room in ahowling gale—may have in taking amsssage from a wireless station onlya few miles away.

During the War

That was the state of affairs at thebeginning of the war, in September,1939. Immediately war was declaredall transmitting sets, except in life-boats on the coast of Eire, had to beput out of action and sealed. Life-boats might listen but they must notspeak. Nor would the Governmentallow any more boats to be fitted withwireless. This continued for fourmonths. Then life-boats were allowedagain to send out messages, but theywere warned that they must say nothingwhich could give information to lis-tening German submarines. The Insti-tution was also allowed to equip moreboats, and during the war twelve wereso equipped. The Admiralty also fittedseven of our boats, which had no wire-less, with receivers as used on motorcars, so that the coxswains might bekept in touch with the naval offieers-in-charge on shore. Some of thesereceivers are still in use. The positionat the end of the war was that out ofthe Institution's 151 motor life-boats, •70 had radio-telephony; 57 of the 70had sending and receiving sets; 13 hadreceiving sets only.

Up to this time transmitting setscould be used only in life-boats withcabins, and they had now been installed

.in nearly all the cabin boats. The 13life-boats which had only receivingsets were open boats. We had found itpossible to put the receiving sets in'water-tight cases which could be fixedunder the canopy covering the engine-controls, but it was much harder tomake the transmitting set watertight.It required a case larger than the canopywould take.

A New Specification

The position now was that if we wereto make any further advance, and if we

were to be able to equip every life-boatwith complete radio-telephony, wemust have a watertight receiving set ofa size which could be used in open boats.During 1946 we examined a number ofexisting sets, but found none with thefour essential requirements: that itshould be waterproof: of small size;able to give a sufficient range with thesmall aerial which was all that a life-boat could carry; and simple to workby unskilled operators in any conditionsof weather and noise. So the Institu-tion prepared a specification of itsspecial needs. It wanted a set con-sisting of four small units: a ti-ans-mitter, a receiver, a power pack toconvert the power from the life-boat'selectric battery into the ' differentvoltages needed by the transmitter andreceiver, and a remote control, or ex-tension. The extension must be forboth transmitter and receiver, and thereceiver and the extension must haveloud-speakers built into them. In thecase of cabin life-boats, the transmitterand receiver would, as before, be put inthe cabin, where they would be effect-ively protected from water. In the caseof boats without cabins, they would bein water-tight cases either in one of theend-boxes or under one of the side-benches in the cockpit. The remotecontrol, or extension, would be in theroof of the canopy, where the motormechanic would have it close by hishead as he sat at his engine-controls,and it must be proof against con-tinuous drenching with sea-water.

The Advantage of Crystal*The specification also asked for sets

fitted with crystals to control the wave-lengths. There were to be four, andone of them was to be set to the wave-length of the international distresssignal. They were chosen because acrystal has the advantage of main-taining a constant wave-length. Byturning to it the operator gets at once,without searching, the wave-lengththat he wants.

In the earlier sets the aerial was asingle wire running from a small mizzen-mast to the top-mast, then down to aninsulated lead-in trunk and so to theset in the cabin. The new set was,where possible, to operate with a ver-tical rod aerial, though, in some boats,

the normal aerial between the mastswould still have to be used because ofdifficulties in transmission. The ad-vantage of the rod aerial was that itwould be independent of the mastand its running gear and would notbe affected when—as often must bedone in heavy seas—the mast is loweredbefore the life-boat goes alongside awreck. If it should happen, with thelife-boat plunging alongside a wreck,that the rod aerial had to be temporarily

Ereventing it from spreading, carries itve times further. The loud-hailer is

a megaphone which, with the help ofelectricity, carries it ten times furtherthan the megaphone. A man speakinginto it in his ordinary voice will beheard 500 yards away. Even in thenoise of a gale it enables the coxswainto speak clearly to the men on thewreck and do by word of mouth whatbefore had to be done by flags or asignalling lamp. We now proposed

unshipped, this could be done withoutdilficulty.

The Loud-Hailer

We also proposed to combine withthe new transmitter one of the mostuseful inventions of the war, the loud-hailer. After experiments with variousmakes the Institution had decided toadopt it in all life-boats, and it hadalready been fitted in a number ofthem. Before the war the only meansof increasing the range of the humanvoice was the megaphone which, by

that this loud-hailer should work offthe amplifier of the wireless transmitter,instead of independently.

We sent this specification to severalfirms, and Coastal Radio has designeda set which meets our needs. The firstexperimental set was fitted in theAppledore life-boat in May. 194T.There it was thoroughly tested. Moresets were ordered and now we have fourin life-boats with cabins, and two inopen life-boats. They are all workingsatisfactorily. They are small, lightand very simple to work. It is easy

with them to give and receive messagesup to fifty miles, under almost anycondition, and under favourable con-ditions over much greater distances;and the motor mechanic, simply bymoving a switch, can pass at once fromspeaking through the radio transmitterto the shore to speaking through theloud-hailer to the wreck.

Complete Equipment in Two YearsThe new sets, like nearly all the old,

are not bought by the Institution butare hired from the makers, who under-take to maintain them. Instead, how-ever, of only calling in the firm whenthere is a failure, it has been arrangedfor all sets to be inspected every twomonths.

The present position is that of the154 motor life-boats in the active fleet80 are now equipped with transmittingand receiving sets, and 11 with receiv-ing sets only. In the reserve fleetof 14 boats, two have transmittingand receiving sets. Besides the sixboats in the active fleet which have thenew sets with loud-hailers attached,there are 33 boats which have loud-hailers working independently.

We have now radio equipment whichcan be used in every type of life-boat.New boats will be fitted with it, and theold sets in boats on the coasts will bereplaced with the new as circum-stances allow. We expect to equip thewhole fleet with the new sets in abouttwo vears.

Forty-five Hours on the GoodwinsThirty Lives Rescued from an Italian Steamer

AT ten past three on the afternoon ofFriday the 2nd of January, the coast-guard telephoned to me that a vesselappeared to be aground on the GoodwinSands, one and a half miles west-south-west of the East Goodwin Lightvessel.I rang up the coxswain at once and nineminutes later the motor life-boat,Charles Dibdin—Civil Service No. 2,was on her way. The tide was highand the wind was blowing from thesouth-west. It was then not morethan a moderate wind, with, inshore,a moderate sea running. There wasmist and rain. The coxswain took thelife-boat right across the sands whichwere covered with a confused sea. Hesaid that it was like going throughboiling water. It took him just underan hour to reach the vessel, and hefound that she was the Italian steamerSilvia Onorato, bound from the Adri-atic to Rotterdam. She was on theeastern or outer edge of the Good-wins. Heavy seas were breaking rightover her and her bows were swingingabout.

A Critical MomentThe coxswain tried to get alongside,

but a huge sea from astern lifted thelife-boat right above the steamer's deck.

There, riding on the crest of the sea,the life-boatmen looked down on thehatches of the steamer. The cox-swain at once went full speed astern,but it was a fearful moment, for everyman of the crew knew that if thelife-boat struck the gunwhale as thesea fell she would be tipped over andthey would all be flung into the sea.She cleared the gunwale—but only just.Dropping into the trough she actuallygrazed the steamer's side. Then thecoxswain took her round the stern andalong the other side. Here the captainhad lowered a Jacob's ladder, and oneof the life-boatmen. Ginger Thomas,scrambled up it. At the top thecaptain welcomed him with open arms.He was desperately anxious, and eagerfor advice. Thomas took a bearingon the North Foreland, and told himto go full steam ahead with his helmhard to starboard. He hoped in thisway to drive the steamer back over theridge of sand which she had originallycrossed. She did actually move, butwith a force which visibly made hershudder from stem to stern she struckagain, and stopped. She could notmuster enough power to surmount thebank, and there she remained, inthe depression on the sands into

which she first had been driven. Shedrew from 18 to 20 feet of water.The tide was falling and now only14 feet of water covered the sands.

Not only was the tide falling but thewind and sea were increasing. Thomastold the captain that nothing morecould be done until the tide rose; thatin those seas the life-boat could notremain alongside; that it would bewise to let the life-boat take him andhis crew off at once. He refused.Thomas then told him that the life-boat would have to lie off in deeperwater. If, during the night, he wantedhelp he was to fire a rocket and shewould come as quickly as she could.

The First Night's Vigil

The life-boat came alongside closeenough for Thomas to jump and thenwent back across the sands andanchored in deeper water a mile away,with the steamer well in sight. A totof rum was issued. Then the crewsettled down to keep close watch,ready at any moment to go to therescue should the steamer break up.At 1.30 on the Saturday morninganchor was raised and the life-boatwent within hailing distance. It wastoo rough to go alongside, and for thenext five hours she moved round nearthe steamer. The tide had risen butthe steamer had not floated off, andat seven o'clock, when the tide wasfalling again, the coxswain spoke toher captain on the loud hailer, andasked if he and his crew would comeashore. He still refused, and the cox-swain told him that the life-boat mustreturn to her Station to re-fuel, butwould come back to him later andagain stand by.

The life-boat reached Walmer justbefore eight o'clock; the crew wentashore to get into dry clothes and tohave some breakfast; the helpers,many of whom had stood by all night,re-fuelled the boat; and soon afterhalf-past eight she set off for the sandsagain. At 9.30 she was in sight ofthe steamer. She anchored about halfa mile away and once more waited untilthe tide began to flow. A dense fogcame up and at times she could notsee the steamer. So the morningpassed, and early in the afternoon she

weighed anchor and, when the tide hadrisen enough, went alongside. Thecaptain called out that the ship wasall right and that he and his crewwould remain on board. It was thentwo o'clock and tugs had arrived, butthe water was too shallow for them toget near the steamer and too rough forthe life-boat to take wires to them*from her.

The Second Night: Bitter ColdBy this time the fog had cleared,

but the wind was rising, and at highwater the seas were going clean overthe steamer. The coxswain told thecaptain clearly that if he did not comeout of the steamer then the life-boatcould do nothing to help him untilthe following morning. Again he re-fused, and the life-boat continued tomove about on her vigil until six atnight, when once more she anchoredabout a mile away. It was now blow-ing a gale; heavy seas were running;the crew were very cold. So thesecond night passed.

At daybreak on Sunday the life-boatweighed anchor and went across themile of sands through a very confusedsea. Once more the coxswain calledupon the captain to let the life-boattake him and his crew ashore. Againhe refused, and the coxswain told himthat the life-boat could not comewithin reach of him until the afternoon,when the tide was rising again. Shewould go ashore. If the captainwanted her he was to call the NorthForeland Kadio Station. The tidewas now falling and the coxswaintook the life-boat back through thatturbulent, rapidly-shallowing waterover the sands, praying that she wouldnot meet any submerged wreckage orthe flukes of partly sunken anchors.She reached Walmer safely just beforenine o'clock that morning, the Sunday.She was hauled up, put on the turn-table and made ready to launch again.Fresh supplies of rum, biscuits andchocolate were put on board in pre-paration for a third night's vigil, andthe crew went home to get dry clothes,food and rest. They would have toset out again in the middle of the after-noon so as to reach the steamer beforethe light failed.

The Captain Still RefusesAt ten minutes to three the life-boat

was launched again and reached thesteamer at a quarter past four. Thistime the coxswain decided to go onboard her himself and advise the cap-tain to abandon her. There he wasmet by the captain's Alsatian dog.which, he said, gave him a bigger fright

the captain what the Goodwins did toships. He showed him wrecks whichcould be seen along the sands. He toldhim that if he did not come now itmight be impossible to rescue him later.Still the captain refused, and the cox-coxswain said: "All right, then weshall have to go in to anchor andstand by."

than the sight of the steamer's hatcheswhen the life-boat rode on the' sea abovethe deck on the Friday afternoon.But the dog received him as a friendand, right up to the end of the service,when he was handed over to the Dealpolice, "behaved," the coxswain said,"like a perfect gentleman." The cox-swain told the captain of the plight hewas in and advised him to come ashore.This time he hesitated and sent for his'engineer. The engineer said the shipwas still sound. He saw no reasonwhy she should be abandoned. Oncemore the coxswain explained. He told

as before, for the third night of watch-ing, but as she did so she received fromRamsgate a wireless message sent outby Lloyd's Shipping Agents at Dover tothe captain of the steamer. The mes-sage said that a gale from the south-south-west was imminent. It wouldbe blowing with gusts of fifty miles anhour. The coxswain turned the life-boat round at once, went back to thesteamer and gave the captain thismessage through the loud hailer, Atonce he decided to leave his ship, and

the life-boat went alongside. The seaswere heavy; the life-boat was surgingabout; one by one the twenty-eightItalians, two German stowaways andthe Alsatian dog jumped into her. Thecrew were ready to grab them as theyfell. All went well. From the begin-ning to end the Italian crew behaved

coolly, and by twenty minutes past fivethe rescue was complete and the life-boat wirelessed that she was comingashore. She arrived at a quarter pastsix. It was then fifty-one hours sinceshe had first set out. Of those fifty-one hours the life-boat had been forty-five at sea, in weather which all thetime was getting worse, in heavy con-fused seas on the sands, in bitter cold.The engines ran faultlessly all the time.The wireless too worked without fault.

Of the vote of the medal inscribed onvellum and the ordinary scale rewardof £12 15s.;

To C. P. CAVELL, the motor mechanic,the bronze medal for gallantry, with acopy of the vote of the medal inscribedon vellum and, in addition to his full-time pay, a special reward of £10;

Life-boat Days in 1947IN 1947 the Institution held 817 flagdays. The number of people who gave

was 7,545,000, and the sum given was£93,503.

A Naval Officer's Gratitude

AT six o'clock in the morning on the5th of December, 1947, the Bembridgemotor life-boat, Jesse Lumb, went outto the help of a vessel firing signals ofdistress about four miles south-east ofSt. Catherine's Point. A gale wasblowing from the south-south-east. Anhour and three-quarters later the life-boat found H.M. trawler Erraid. Shewas about a mile east of St. Catherine'sPoint, at anchor, in heavy breaking seas,off a dead lee shore. A corvette hadbeen sent out from Portsmouth andwas standing by. The life-boat triedto take a line from the corvette to thetrawler, but it could not be done. Theweather was getting worse very rapidly,and the corvette, for her own safety,had to move out into deeper water.A tug then arrived, and this time thelife-boat was able to get a rope from herto the trawler. But the rope partedand the tug went on, leaving thetrawler to the life-boat's help.

The trawler was now only about half amile from the shore and her anchorswere dragging. The life^boat had to goalongside four times in those heavy seasbefore she was able to take off theeighteen men of the crew, their dog andtheir cat. One of the men fell betweentrawler and life-boat, but he was hauledon board unhurt. It was not untilten minutes past two in the afternoonthat the life-boat returned to Bern-

bridge. She had then been out justover eight hours.

The Commander-in-Chief at Ports-mouth sent his congratulations andthanks to the crew and the captain ofthe trawler wrote: "I don't know howI can thank your wonderful boat'screw. . . . the way they stayed out inthat filthy weather, the way the boatwas handled, the manner in which wewere treated when taken into the boat,was something which I had read aboutbut had never believed until that day."

A New Life-boat Film

THE Institution has had a new filmmade, with dialogue, commentary andmusic, called "Shipshape." It showsthe work of repair and supply for thelife-boat stations which is constantlygoing on at the Institution's Depot,where there are stored, and ready fordespatch, over 30,000 different articlesneeded by life-boats.

The film opens with the return of alife-boat from service. The rescuedmen, some of them injured, are landed.The life-boat is examined, and her

rudder is found to have been badlydamaged against the wreck.

A telephone message to the Depotasks for a new rudder, and for thereplacement of stores which had beenused, and the film shows a tour of theDepot as the new rudder, and the otherthings required, are collected. They areall ready for despatch within an hour.

The film ends with the life-boat,fitted with her new rudder, going outagain to the rescue. It takes fiveminutes to show.

A Gallant Attempt

ON November 19th, 1947, an easterlygale was blowing at Broadstairs, andabout mid-day three boys, on their wayhome from school, went on the pier towatch the breaking seas. One of themwas seen standing by himself on thesteps at the head of the pier. A fewminutes later a cry was heard and theboy was seen in the water some distanceout. A wave had pulled him off thesteps and washed • him away. Allround the pierhead the seas were veryconfused, coming from all directions,but the boy was making a bravestruggle and could be seen swimmingwell.

The harbour master and two othermen (two of the three were nearlysixty) launched a rowing boat andpulled out, but in those heavy, confusedseas their attempt seemed so hopeless,and so dangerous, that others whowatched them shouted and waved tothem to come back. They had no life-belts.

They got so close to the boy that the

harbour master was actually leaningover to seize his hand when a heavy,and most unlucky, sea struck the boat,carried away one of her oars and droveher back on to the shore.

The three men pushed off again,but this time the boat filled almost atonce with water. They could notmanage her. They returned to theshore. But they refused to be beaten,and they put out again, this time in amotor boat. This too was driven backon to the shore. They put out yetagain and, this time, directed by thepeople on the pier, found the boy, butit was too late. He had been in thewater now for half an hour and he wasdead.

The three men were Mr. A. J. Pay,the harbour master of Broadstairs, Mr.E. J. M. Croom, and Mr. B. C. Wood.In recognition of their gallantry theInstitution has awarded to each ofthem its thanks inscribed on vellum.They also received £5 each from afund in Broadstairs.

Doubled Annuities

LAST year the Institution greatlyincreased the retaining fees paid tothe officers of life-boats. It alsoincreased the payments made to crewsand launchers for exercise launches,and brought in a new scale of rewardsfor services.

These alterations, it was calcu-lated, would add £10,000 a year tothe payments made to coxswains,crews and launchers. As from thebeginning of this year the annuitiespaid to retired officers of life-boatshave been doubled.

The Portrait on the Cover

THE portrait on the cover is of CoxswainJeffrey Wright who, after serving for10 years as bowman of the Fleetwoodlife-boat, was its coxswain from theautumn of 1933 until the end of 1947.He won the silver medal for gallantryduring the war when, on August 5th,1941, the life-boat rescued the crewof the motor schooner Stella Marie ofthe Faroes. The schooner was fast on

a sandbank, the seas pouring over herdeck, her crew clinging exhausted inthe rigging. Coxswain Wright sawthat there was not a moment to be lostand drove the life-boat right againstthe wreck. Her rudder was displacedand two-thirds of his control of herwas gone, but in spite of this he kepther alongside until the crew wererescued, and brought her safely home.

NO PETROLHartlepool, Co. Durham. — At nine

o'clock on the night of the 2nd ofDecember, 1947, the coastguard tele-phoned that a small boat was continu-ously flashing a light about one milenorth-north-east of the lighthouse. Asmall motor fishing boat, the Elmo, wasknown to have been out since eight thatmorning. The motor life-boat ThePrincess Royal, Civil Service No. 7, waslaunched at 9.25 in a light south-westerly wind with a slight sea, andfound the Elmo with no petrol, and hercrew of two suffering from cold andexposure. She towed the Elmo home,arriving at eleven o'clock. A letterof thanks and a donation were receivedfrom the owner of the fishing boat.—Rewards, £0 4*.

NUMBED WITH COLDAberystwyth, Cardiganshire. — At 4.5

in the afternoon of the 3rd of December,1947, the coastguard reported that themotor fishing boat Sea Breeze, of Aber-ayron, was making distress signalsabout a quarter of a mile off Llanon.The motor life-boat Frederick Anguswas launched at 4.30, in a fresh south-easterly breeze, with a moderate sea,and found the Sea Breeze, with herengine broken down, lying at anchorin a very dangerous position near astony beach and Cadwgan reef. Shepassed a tow-line to her, but the twomen of her crew were so cold that theycould not make it fast, so the life-boat's 'bowman went on board to do it forthem, and the life-boat towed the boatinto harbour, arriving back at herstation at 8.35 that evening.—Rewards,£33 19*.

A DANGEROUS HARBOUR BAR

Whitby, Yorkshire.—At about 11.30in the morning of the 4th of December,1947, word was received that localfishing cobles and other boats werecoming in. The tide was ebbing, alight easterly breeze was blowing andthere was a strong swell. As these

conditions made the harbour bar dan-gerous for small boats, the No. 2 pullingand sailing life-boat Robert and EllenRobson was launched at noon, and wasrowed to the harbour entrance. Thereshe met the fishing coble Silver Lineand another fishing boat, the Effort,and escorted them into the harbour.She went out again and stood by theProgress which, with the Fox Glove intow, reached the harbour without help.Then she escorted in the cobles FloralQueen and Good Faith and returned toher station at 1.45.—Rewards, £13.

VELLUM FOR BEMBRIDGE COXSWAIN

Bembridge, Isle of Wight.—On the5th of December, 1947, the motorlife-boat Jessie Lumb rescued eighteenmen from H.M. trawler Erraid, and thecoxswain was awarded the Institution'sthanks on vellum. See page 133.

BRIDLINGTON AND SCARBOROUGH TOTHE HELP OF FISHING BOATS

Bridlington, Yorkshire.—At 2.27 inthe morning of the 5th of December,1947, the coastguard telephoned that avessel to the eastward was makingS.O.S. signals on her syren. The motorlife-boat Tillie Morrison, Sheffield waslaunched at 3.30 in a moderate south-easterly breeze with a moderate sea, butgrounded on a sand bank. She gotoff at 4.20. When she started hersearch she met a fishing boat and to-gether they found the steam drifter JohnWatt, of Fraserburgh, stranded on therocks on the south side of FlimboroughHead. The second coxswarh wentaboard the drifter and the Jife-boat laidout an anchor for her and passed a towrope from her to the fishing boat. .Theweather was getting worse, so the life-boat stood by until the John Watt wasrefloated at 7.30 that morning. Shearrived back at her station at 8 o'clock.—Property Salvage Case.

Bridlington, Yorkshire. — On her re-turn from the service to the John Watt,the life-boat remained in the harbourand was not returned to her house asthe weather was getting worse and therewere fishing boats still at sea.' Atabout 11 o'cldck one was reported in

sight and the Tillie Morrison, Sheffieldleft her moorings. A strong south-easterly gale was now blowing with avery heavy sea. The life-boat met thelocal fishing vessel Irene and escortedher into harbour. Again she remainedthere while inquiries were made abouta second local fishing vessel, the BrighterHope. When it was reported thatshe was not returning, but was runningbefore the gale, and that the Scar-borough life-boat was going out to herhelp the Tillie Morrison, Sheffield, re-turned to her station and was rehousedat 3.20 in the afternoon.—Rewards,£15.

Scarborough, Yorkshire.—At 9.35 inthe morning of the 5th of December,1947, the coastguard reported that fourfishing boats were at sea, a strong south-south-east breeze was blowing, a heavysea running, and the wind and seaincreasing. Some hours later anothermessage said that one of the boats,the Brighter Hope, could be seen mak-ing for the harbour. Its entrance wasdangerous with the heavy seas, andthe motor life-boat Herbert Joy II waslaunched at 1.15 in the afternoon.She escorted in the Brighter Hope,put to sea again, found the Mary Joyabout one and a half miles north ofthe Castle and brought her safely intoharbour. She waited there to bring inthe other boats, as they arrived, but amessage came that they had put intoWhitby, so she returned to her station,arriving at 2.45 that afternoon.—Rewards, £29 8s.

FORT IN DANGER OF COLLAPSING

Margate, Kent.—At 2.33 in the after-noon of the 5th of December, 1947, thecoastguard telephoned that the Com-mander-in-Chief at the Nore had askedthat the life-boat should take off thecrew of four of the Tongue Sands Fort.This fort had been built as part of thedefence against mine-laying aircraftduring the war. A south-south-westgale was blowing, with a rough sea, andit was feared that the fort would col-lapse. The motor life-boat The LordSouthborough—Civil Service No. 1, waslaunched at 2.40. It was only at thethird attempt that she was able to getalongside the fort in the heavy seas.She took off the four men and arrived

BRAZILIAN STEAMER ASHORE

Dover, Kent.—At 3.45 in the morningof the 7th of December, 1947, informa-tion was received from the coastguardat St. Margarets that a vessel wasaground in the bay, and the motorlife-boat J. B. Proudfoot was launchedat 4.20 in a south-easterly breeze witha moderate sea running. She found theS.S. Vitorialoide, of Rio de Janeiro, witha crew of sixty-nine, aground nearLeathercoat Point. Tugs had alsogone out and succeeded in refloatingher. The life-boat stood by until itwas certain that the steamer was notmaking water and then returned to herstation which she reached at half-pasteight that evening.—Rewards, £12 5*.

FISHING-BOAT BROKEN DOWN

Filey, Yorkshire.—At 4.36 in the after-noon of the 10th of December, themotor life-boat The Cuttle went outto search for the local motor fishingcoble Edward and Muriel, which wasoverdue. The sea was calm, with alight south-westerly wind, but therewas fog. Off Filey Brigg the life-boatsaw a light and found the coble undersail, with her engine broken down.She towed her into Filey, arriving at6.20.—Rewards, £16 17s.

REFLOATING A TRAWLER

Fraserburgh, Aberdeenshire.—At 6.30in the evening of the 12th of December,1947, the coastguard reported that avessel was aground off the north endof the promenade, but was not making

. signals of distress. A light north-westerly breeze was blowing with aslight swell. The life-boat honorarysecretary, who is also the harbourmaster, put out in a pilot boat and foundthe steam trawler St. Agnes No. 7. ofSouth Shields, with a crew of eleven onboard. He thought it advisable forthe motor life-boat to come to her help,and as soon as he returned the John andCharles Kennedy was launched. It wasthen 7.45 in the evening. The life-boathelped to refloat the trawler and thentowed her into harbour, arriving backat her station at 10.56 that night.—Property Salvage Case.

Ramsgate, Kent.—• At 4.16 in theafternoon of the 14th of December,1947, the coastguard telephoned amessage from the Broadstairs SailingClub that owing to the wind and tideone of their dinghies could not reachBroadstairs. A light northerly breezewas blowing with a rough sea. Asecond message said that the dinghywas in difficulties and at 4.36 the motorlife-boat Prudential was launched. Shefound the sailing dinghy Rover, withone man aboard, between Louisa Gapand Dumpton Gap. Her sail hadcarried away and she was drifting.The life-boat towed her to the harbourand arrived back at her station at5.23. A donation was received fromthe man in the dinghy.—Rewards,£7 13«.

SICK MAN LANDED

Salcombe, South Devon;—At 10.20 onthe night of the 14th of December,1947, the Hope Cove coastguard, tele-phoned that the American steamerThomas W. Owen, of Wilmington, waswaiting ten miles due south of PrawlePoint for a boat to land an injured man.The motor life-boat Samuel and MarieParkhouse was launched at half-pasteleven in a smooth sea with a lightnorth-easterly wind blowing. She tookthe man on board and as she approachedthe shore signalled that a doctor andambulance would be needed. Shearrived back at two in the morning.—Rewards, £11 8s.

COBLE BROKEN DOWN

Amble, Northumberland.—At 1.50 inthe afternoon of the 15th of Decem-ber, 1947, the coastguard reported afishing coble burning flares three milessouth-east of Hauxley Point. Themotor life-boat Frederick and Emmawas launched at 2.10 in a light northerlywind with a moderate swell, found thecoble True Vine with her enginebroken down, and towed her in, arrivingback at 2.40.—Rewards, £8.

ENGLISH AND DANISH FISHING BOATSIN DISTRESS

Runswick, and Whitby, Yorkshire.—Athalf-past one in the afternoon of the17th of December, 1947, informationwas telephoned from Whitby to Runs-

wick that the fishing boat Gem, belong-ing to Whitby, was in distress off Salt-burn and had asked by wireless forimmediate help. The Runswick motorlife-boat Robert Patton—The AlwaysReady was launched at 1.40 in astrong northerly wind with a heavysea, and found the Gem north ofStaithes, leaking badly. The life-boatand another fishing boat escorted theGem southwards, while her crew baledand pumped to keep her afloat.

The Whitby No. 1 motor life-boatMary Ann Hepworth had also beenlaunched at 1.40. After going aboutten miles she met the other boats andtook over the escort from the Runswicklife-boat, and the latter put back toher station, which she reached abouthalf-past four. As the boats ap-proaehed Kettleness they saw distresssignals from another fishing boat aboutthree miles out and leaving the Gem,with her escorting fishing boat, to goon to Whitby, the life-boat went toher help and found the Danish motorfishing boat Tut at anchor. She wasshort of fuel. As the weather wasgetting worse the coxswain advisedthe skipper to make an effort, withsails, and what little fuel he had, toget into Whitby harbour. Anotherfishing boat led the way and the life-boat escorted the Tut into harbour,arriving at five o'clock.—Rewards,Runswick, £19 18*. 6d.; Whitby,£11 17*.

The Humber, Yorkshire.—At about4.45 in the afternoon of the 17th ofDecember, 1947, the Port War SignalStation telephoned that a vessel, threemiles south of Spurn Point, was makingdistress signals, and the motor life-boatCity of Bradford II was launched at4.48 in a strong northerly breeze witha rough sea. She found the Danishfishing vessel Ebor Jewel, bound forGrimsby with a crew of three. Herengines had broken down and she wasin danger of driving ashore. The life-boat towed her to Grimsby and thenreturned to her station, arriving at 8.45in the evening.—Property SalvageCase.

Appledore, Devon. — At 5.30 in theafternoon of the 19th of December, 1947,

the Westward Ho coastguard tele-phoned that a steamer was firing whiterockets half a mile north-west of theBar Buoy and the motor life-boatViolet Armstrong was launched at 5.45in a strong north-westerly breeze witha rough sea. She found the S.S. Fawn,of Ramsey, of one hundred and forty-two tons, laden with grain and boundfor London with a crew of six. Shehad anchored because of trouble withher boiler, but the chain had partedand she had stranded on North Tail.The life-boat took off her crew, and thenstood by. As the tide rose the Fawnrefloated. With some difficulty thelife-boat put her crew on board againand towed her to Appledore, arrivingat 9.30 that night.—Property SalvageCase.

FISHING BOAT TAKEN IN TOWGalway Bay.—At 1.30 in the afternoon

of the 20th of December, 1947, in astrong north-westerly breeze, with arough sea, the motor life-boat K.E.C.F.was returning from Baltimore toValentia after overhaul when she cameup with the motor fishing boat Adven-turer, of Berehaven, flying a distresssignal, about two miles south of DurseyIsland. Her engine had broken downand she was drifting towards the shore.She had six men aboard. The life-boattowed her to Dursey Sound and afterseeing her moored there about 3 o'clock,resumed her journey.—Rewards, £4.

RABBIT-CATCHERS MAROONEDThurso, Caithness-shire.—Shortly after

seven in the evening of the 22ndof December, 1947, information wasreceived from Melness, Sutherlandshire,thirty-five miles to the eastwards, thattwo men were marooned on the RabbitIslands, at-the entrance to the Kyle ofTongue, where they had gone to clearrabbit snares. They had left the main-land at ten in the morning in a rowingboat, but had not taken any food withthem. When they tried to return inthe afternoon a north-westerly galewas blowing, with a very rough sea, andthey had to put back to the islands.It was decided that the motor life-boatH.C.J. should set out in time to reachthe Rabbit Islands at daybreak and atfour in the morning of the 23rd of

December she was launched. Againstthe gale and in continuous rain it tookher longer than had been expected toreach the islands, and it was 11.30 inthe morning when she arrived. Sheembarked the two men, gave them food,and then took them and their boat toMelness. She reached her station againat 3.30 that afternoon.—Rewards,£27 11s.

LANDING INJURED MEN

Clovelly, Devon. — At 9.30 in themorning of Christmas Day, 1947, theHartland Point coastguard reported awireless message from the S.S. Holder-nore, of Hull, that she wanted to landinjured men. With a doctor on boardthe motor life-boat City of Nottinghamwas launched at five minutes to elevenin a moderate westerly wind with amoderate sea. She found the steamerfive miles west of Hartland Point andput the doctor aboard. Two injuredmen were then lifted into the life-boatand she brought them ashore, where anambulance was waiting to take them toBarnstaple Infirmary. The life-boatreached her station again at one o'clock,that afternoon.—Rewards, £21 3*. 6d.

. ANOTHER FISHING BOAT BROKENDOWN

Boulmer, Northumberland. — Aboutnoon on the 26th of December, 1947. afishing boat, three miles to the south-east of Boulmer, was seen to hoist asignal of distress and the motor life-boat Clarissa Langdon was launched at12.15, in a strong west-north-west windwith a rough sea running. She foundthe motor seine-net fishing boat Chil-dren's Friend, of Seahouses, with acrew of four, and her engine brokendown. The life-boat took her in towand made for Seahouses. The motorfishing boat Kindly Light also helpedto tow. They reached Seahouses atthree o'clock and the life-boat gotback again to her station at six thatevening.—Rewards, £20 9s.

TAKING OUT A DOCTORGreat Yarmouth and Gorleston, Norfolk.—

At 9.19 in the morning of the 30th ofDecember, 1947, the Gorleston coast-guard telephoned that a vessel one mile

east-south-east of the coastguard sta-tion had signalled for medical help.With a doctor on board the motor life-boat Louise Stephens was launched at10.4, in a fresh westerly breeze with amoderate sea, and found the S.S.Yewarch, of Glasgow, with one of hercrew ill. The doctor went on board,and after he had treated the man thelife-boat brought him back to Gorleston,arriving at 10.45.—Rewards, £8.

PROPELLER FOULED BY NETSRosslare Harbour, Co. Wexford.—At

7 o'clock on the night of the 31st ofDecember, 1947, flares were seen inSouth Bay, and the motor life-boatMabel Marion Thompson was launchedat 7.20. A strong southerly breeze wasblowing with a choppy sea. She foundthe local motor fishing boat Fly, withher propeller fouled by nets, in tow ofthe motor fishing boat Pride of Rosslare.The skipper of the Pride of Rosslare hadsignalled for help thinking he could notmanage his tow, and the life-boatescorted them to the harbour. Anotherflare was seen and another local motorfishing boat, St. Joseph, which had beensearching for the Fly, was found to bein difficulties. The life-boat escortedher into harbour and arrived back ather station at 8.30.—Partly Perman-ent Paid Crew: Rewards, £2 Us.

FIVE LIVES LOSTArklow, Co. Wicklow.—At 4.35 in

the morning of the 5th of December,1947, the Coast Life Saving Servicereported a vessel in distress off Bally-money, Co. A moderate south-easterlygale was blowing, with heavy seas.The life-boat found the vessel to bethe motor schooner Isallt, of Dublin,bound for Waterford, but no one wason board. She had struck a sandbank,inside the Glasgoman Bank, and hercrew of seven, one of them a woman,had left in the ship's boat, but the boat

S.S. Lynn Trader went ashore aboutone mile south of Flamborough Headwhile on passage, in ballast, from King'sLynn to Blyth. She carried a crew ofnine. She did not signal for help, butabout eight o'clock next morning shewas reported to the Fla-mborough HeadRoyal Naval Shore Signal Station bythe S.S. Pool Fisher. The signal sta-tion notified the life-boat station andat half past eight the motor life-boatElizabeth and Albina Whitley waslaunched. A fresh south-westerly windwas blowing and the sea was rough.The life-boat ran out a kedge anchorwith a wire rope and then stood by towait for high water, when she hopedthat, by means of the anchored rope,the Lynn Trader would be able to haulherself off. The attempt failed, and,after arranging to return later, the life-boat made for her station which shereached at one o'clock in the afternoon.About seven in the evening the life-boatreturned to the steamer, which againtried, but without success, to haul her-self off. The life-boat then stood byuntil' the tide had ebbed. As thesteamer's crew were then in no danger,she returned to her station, arriving atabout one o'clock in the morning ofthe 5th of January. ON HAISBOROUGH SANDSCromer, Norfolk. —At 7.22 in the

morning of the 4th of January, 1948,the coastguards telephoned informationreceived from the Haisborough Light-vessel that a vessel 011 the North MiddleHaisborough Sands was burning flares,and the Cromer No. 1 motor life-boatHenry Blogg was launched at 7.40. Astrong south-south-west wind was blow-ing, with a moderately rough sea. Thelife-boat reached the position at 9.45and there found the steam trawlerBalmoral, of Grimsby.. She had beenabandoned by her crew. As she wasthen drifting into deep water five ofthe life-boat's crew went aboard her,and the life-boat set out in search of thetrawler's crew. She found them—eleven men—about three miles away ina small ship's boat, took them on board,and, with the ship's boat in tow, re-turned to the Balmoral. By this timeshe had been anchored by the five life-

boatmen. With the exception of oneman, who was ill, her crew went aboard"and, finding her undamaged, made forGrimsby. It was then one o'clock.The life-boat escorted the steamer as.far as Haisborough Lightvessel whichthey reached at half past two, and thenreturned to Cromer, where she arrivedat five o'clock and landed the sick man-

SICK MAN LANDEDMargate, Kent.—At 8.57 on the night

of the 6th of January, 1948, the motorlife-boat Lord Southborough—CivilService No. 1, was launched in a strongsouth-south-west breeze with a roughsea to search for an aeroplane reportedin the sea ten miles to the north-north-east. The life-boat found no trace ofher, but on her way back she was sig-nalled by the motor vessel Fluidity,which had a sick man on board. Thelife-boat brought him and the Fluidity'sskipper ashore, arriving back at herstation at 3.30 the following morning.—-Rewards, £39 Is. 6d.

WEATHER-BOUND IN TORBAYTorbay, Devon.—During the morning

of the 7th of January, 1948, officers oftwo London steamers, Fulham III andFulham VI, weather-bound in Torbaywhile on passage in ballast to Barrv,had come ashore to buy provisions.The wind got up and at two o'clock itwas blowing a gale from the north-north-west, with a .rough sea. Theofficers could not get back to theirsteamers in the ships' boats, and askedfor the help of the life-boat, GeorgeShee. She was launched, towed theboats out to the steamers and returnedto her station at 3.20.—Rewards, £4 8s.

BARGE SINKING IN THE THAMESSouthend-on-Sea, Essex.—At 8 o'clock

on the night of the 7th of January,1948, the coastguard reported that abarge, from which they had rescueda woman, was drifting away fromthe pier and sinking, and her crew oftwo could be heard calling for help. At8.20 the motor life-boat Greater London—Civil Service No. 3 was launched ina fresh westerly gale with a rough sea.She found the barge Thelma, ofRochester, south of the pier, with her

It was too dangerousfor the life-boat to attempt to go along-side in that sea, so the coxswain drove'her bows on to the barge and, withgreat difficulty hauled in the two men,who were exhausted. The life-boatreached her station again at 9 o'clock,but the pier authorities said that thebarge would interfere with berthingarrangements and would damage thepier. They asked if the life-boatwould tow her cle,ar, and at 9.10 sheagain went out, and with great diffi-culty put three life-boatmen on boardthe Thelma. Then a tow rope waspassed to them and the life-boattowed the barge alongside the pier.The three men remained on board herand pumped all night to keep herafloat. Holyhead, Anglesey.—At 9.10 on thenight of the 7th of January, 1948,the coastguard reported that a smallvessel off Salt Island had signalledSOS with a torch, and the motor life-boat A.E.D. was launched at 9.37. Anorth-north-west gale was blowing witha rough sea. The life-boat found theS.S. Eleth, of Liverpool, ashore on SaltPoint and making water. She wasbound from Preston to Rosslare, ladenwith coal, and had a crew of ten. Thelife-boat took them all off and landedthem at Holyhead at 10.10.—Rewards,£5.

PILOT WANTED

Ezmouth, Devon.—About 8.15 on thenight of the 9th of January, 1948, thecoastguard telephoned that a vesselwas burning flares and signalling be-tween two and three miles off Sidmouth,and the motor life-boat CatherineHarriet Eaton was launched at 6.25.A strong west-north-west breeze wasblowing, with a verv rough sea. Thelife-boat found the" S.S. Martha, ofAmsterdam, a collier, bound for Ex-mouth, but she was not in distress.All she wanted was a pilot and the

second coxswain, who was a qualifiedpilot, was put aboard. He broughtthe Martha in and the life-boat returnedto her station, arriving at 9.30.—Rewards, £24 14s.

NO ENGINE, BUT ONE OAR

Flamborough, Yorkshire. — At about4.25 on the afternoon of the 10th ofJanuary, 1948, the Royal Naval ShoreSignal Station telephoned that a fishingcoble appeared to have broken down offFlamborough Head. The motor life-boat Elizabeth and Albina Whitley waslaunched at 4.45 in a fresh south-easterly breeze, with a heavy groundswell, and found the local fishing coblePioneer, with her engine broken downand her crew of three trying to makeheadway with one oar. She towedthem to the North Landing and arrivedback at her station at 5.30.—Rewards,£15 145. 6d.

CAUGHT BY SUDDEN GALESPortpatrick, Wigtownshire. — On the

morning of the 13th of January, 1948,anxiety was felt for the safety ofseveral local fishing boats at sea, for agale was getting up, and at 12.15, whenit was blowing a strong west-south-westgale, with a very rough sea running,the motor life-boat Jeanie Speirs waslaunched. She found the fishing boats,Adoration, Ebenezer and Nellie, escortedthem to the harbour, and arrived backat her station at 1.30.—Rewards, £7.

Flamborough, Yorkshire.—During theafternoon of the 13th of January,1948, the wind increased to a west-north-west gale while several fishingcobles were at sea, and at three o'clockthe motor life-boat Elizabeth and AlbinaWhitley was launched in a very roughsea to escort in the cobles Quest andProsperity. The Quest was only half amile away, and she was soon safe in thehaven, but the 'Prosperity was threemiles north-east of Flamborough Head,and it was half past four before she gothome, attended by the life-boat.—Rewards, £15 4s.

TWO LIFE-BOATS AND A STEAMER TOTHE RESCUE

North Sunderland, and Boulmer, North-umberland.—At 4.36 in the afternoon

of the 17th of January, 1948, theSeahouses coastguard telephoned toNorth Sunderland that the local fishingyawl Marguerite was off CullernosePoint and the weather was gettingworse. The motor life-boat W.R.A.was launched at 5.22 in a very strongsoutherly wind, with a rough sea run-ning. On her way to Cullernose Pointher wireless aerial was washed away,but her motor mechanic was still ableto keep in touch by wireless with theshore. In this way the life-boat heardthat a passing vessel had seen a redflare and had found the Marguerite.But the vessel could not get near enoughand asked for a life-boat's help. Itwas learned later that the two menwho were on board the Marguerite,with their dog, had torn up their shirtsand underclothing, dipped them in oiland set them alight. A rope hadfouled the yawl's propeller, and shewas then half full of water.

Meanwhile, since four in the after-noon, watch had been kept at Boulmer,as a small boat had been seen makingheavy weather and it was learned thatone of the local fishing boats was at sea.At five o'clock came a message fromNorth Sunderland that that life-boatwas launching and the Boulmer motormechanic went on duty to keep intouch by wireless with her. Shortlyafter six o'clock the message was re-ceived at Boulmer from the coast-guard about the red flare and thesteamer, and this message the motormechanic passed on to the North Sun-derland life-boat. Her coxswain re-plied that he could not see the flares,but could see the lights of the vessel,and asked the Boulmer life-boat tolaunch. She put to sea at 6.50, butbefore she arrived the North Sunder-land life-boat had been able to get closeto the Marguerite, and taken her in tow.When this news was received ashore,the Boulmer life-boat was recalled andarrived back at her station at 8.20.The North Sunderland life-boat, withthe Marguerite in tow, reached herstation at 9.20.—Rewards, North Sun-derland, £30 4s. 6d.; Boulmer, £12 Is.

BARGE HELPLESS IN A GALEAppledore, Devon.—Shortly after eight

on the evening of the 17th of January,1948, the barge Mary, belonging to

Appledore, was seen to be burningflares for help west of KeelstoneRocks, Instow, and the motor life-boatViolet Armstrong was launched at 8.20.A strong westerly gale was blowingwith a very rough sea. She found thebarge twenty minutes later and towedher into Appledore at 10.30.—Rewards,£11 Is.

LIFE-BOATMAN OVERBOARDNew Brighton, Cheshire.—At 1.35 in

the morning of the 18th of January,1948, the Formby coastguard tele-phoned that white flares had been seenoff C.2 Red Buoy. The life-boat'screw went out in the boarding boat,but as she came alongside the No. 2motor life-boat Edmund and MaryRobinson at her moorings, one of themen was washed out of her and fellbetween the two boats. He washauled in unconscious, but quicklyrecovered and carried on. The life-boat left her moorings at 2.45. Amoderate west-north-west gale wasblowing and the sea was very rough.The life-boat found the motor vesselGuloy, of Bergen, anchored off C.IRed Buoy. She wanted a pilot, butit was too rough to put anyone onboard her, so the life-boat guided herup the river to the Sloyne, where sheanchored. The life-boat arrived backat her station at 8.15 that evening.—Rewards, £17 5s.

FISHING BOAT ON FIREGourdon, Kincardineshire.—At 5.30 in

the evening of the 18th of January,1948, the coastguard reported distresssignals and at 5.55 the motor life-boatMargaret Dawson was launched. Astrong west-south-west breeze was blow-ing with a choppy sea. The life-boatfound the fishing boat Rosa, bound forMontrose, with a crew of six, two anda half miles east-north-east of Inver-bervie. Her engine-room had caughtfire but the fire had been got undercontrol and a steamer was standing byher. The life-boat towed her to Gour-don, arriving at 7.30.—Rewards, £26.

PROPELLER LOSTWalmer, Kent—During the afternoon

of the 19th of January, 1948, a motorfishing vessel was drifting in the Downs,

DRIFTING FOR TWENTY-SIX HOURSCromarty.—At 1 o'clock in the after-

noon of the 22nd of January, 1948, thecoastguard telephoned a report fromthe keeper of the Tarbert Ness Light-house that a fishing vessel was makingdistress signals four miles north of thelighthouse. The motor life-boat JamesMacFee was launched at 1.20, in amoderate south-easterly breeze with aheavy ground swell. She found thefishing vessel Village Maid with herpropeller fouled, eight miles north ofTarbert Ness. She had been driftingfor twenty-six hours and her crew offive were cold and hungry. The life-boat towed them to PortmahomackHarbour and arrived back at her stationat 7.45 that night.—Rewards, £11 5*.

MORE ENGINES BROKEN DOWNNew Brighton, Cheshire.—At 11.30 on

the night of the 25th of January,1948, the Hoylake coastguard tele-phoned that a fishing vessel was indistress near C.2 A Buoy, half a mile offthe Crosby Lightvessel and at 12.15the No. 2 motor life-boat Edmund andMary Robinson put out. She searchedin a strong south-easterly breeze and achoppy sea, and found the fishing vesselMoa at anchor, leaking, with her enginebroken down and her main boom carriedaway. A pilot boat was standing by.The life-boat rescued the Moo's crewof three, and arrived back at herstation at 3 o'clock. The Moa waslater towed in by a Mersey Docks andHarbour Board boat. — Rewards,£12 2s. 6d.

Rosslare Harbour, Co. Wexford.— Atabout 10.30 on the night of the 26th ofJanuary, 1948, a wireless message wasreceived from the motor vessel Edenvaleof Wexford, that her engine had brokendown, but that she was in no immediate

danger. She gave her position asseventeen miles east-north-east of Tus-kar Rock. At 11.15 the motor life-boat Mabel Marion Thompson waslaunched in a squally south-easterlybreeze and a rough sea, and found theEdenvale twenty-four miles east-north-east of the Tuskar Rock. The S.S.Nugget, of Glasgow, which had also putout, arrived on the scene at the sametime and took the Edenvale in tow.The tow rope parted three times butthe Nugget eventually brought theEdenvale into Dublin, escorted by thelife-boat, which then returned to herstation, arriving at noon on the 27th.—•Partly Permanent Paid Crew: Re-wards, £20 19s.

BRINGING IN A FISHING BOATAldeburgh, Suffolk.—At 12.25 in the

afternoon of the 27th of January, 1948,the coastguard reported that anxietywas felt for the. safety of a local fishingboat which had not been seen since9 o'clock that morning. The wind wasincreasing, and at 12.45 the No. 1motor life-boat Abdy Beauclerk waslaunched in a fresh south-easterlybreeze, with a slight sea. She found thefishing boat, escorted her to the shore,and arrived back at her station at 2.30.—Rewards, £39 15s. 6d.

STEAMER DRIFTINGThe Mumbles, Glamorganshire. —• At

10.40 on the night of the 27th ofJanuary, 1948, the coastguard tele-phoned that the Scarweather Light-ship had reported flares fourteen milesto the southward, and at 11.10 themotor life-boat William Gammon—•Manchester and District XXX waslaunched in a south-easterly breeze anda moderate sea. She found the S.S.Fawn, of Ramsey, six miles south-south-west of the lightship, drifting with herengines broken down. Another vesseltook her in tow and, accompanied bythe life-boat, made for Swansea Bay,where the Fawn anchored. The life-boat then returned to her station,arriving at 3.5 the following morning.—-Rewards, £24 8s.

SHRIMPING BOAT IN DIFFICULTYMargate, Kent.—At about noon on

the 28th of January, 1948, local boat-men reported that the shrimping boat.

The motor life-boat Lord Southborough, Civil ServiceNo. 1 was launched at half past twelvein a west-south-west breeze with amoderate sea, and found the Soniaabout four miles off Birchington, mak-ing slowly for Margate. Her enginehad broken down and had been startedagain, but was not working well. Asshe had no sails, and the wind was offshore, the life-boat escorted her home,arriving at 1.45.—Rewards £10 16s.

ON THE MERSEY REVETMENTNew Brighton, Cheshire.—At 5.25 in

the afternoon of the 28th of January,1948, the coastguard telephoned that avessel was sounding her whistle for help,and the No. 2 life-boat, Edmund andMary Robinson, was launched at 5.42.A east-south-east breeze was blowing,with a choppy sea. The life-boat wentto the Burbo Buoy, in the CrosbyChannel and there found the R.A.S.C.tender Sir Herbert Miles. The tenderwas bringing workmen from Queen'sTorts, anti-aircraft fortifications erectedduring the war, which they weredemolishing. She had run on therevetment in a fog, and had a verydangerous list. The life-boat went.alongside and took off twenty-five men,but the captain said that there were ninemen in a small boat on the other side•of the revetment. They could not beseen in the darkness. ' The life-boatturned on her searchlight, picked up theboat, and called to the men to row upto their side of the revetment. Thelife-boat went along the revetment onthe other side and hauled the men.across it from the boat with ropes.Two of them had their legs injured.The life-boat then put the captain andthe crew of nine on board the MerseyHarbour Dock Board vessel Vigilent.and landed the other twenty-four men.at New Brighton at half past seven.—Rewards, £ll. 55.

ANCHORED TO WRECKAGE ALL NIGHTHowth, Co. Dublin.—At 9 o'clock on

the night of the 29th of January, 1948,it was reported that the local motorfishing boat Striving, with a crew of

four, was overdue. A gale warninghad been received, and at 9.20 themotor life-boat R.P.L. was launched.A moderate south-easterly breeze wasthen blowing, with a moderate sea.The life-boat searched but found nothingand arrived back at her station at twoo'clock the next morning. At 10.15information was received that theStriving had been seen seven milesnorth-east of Howth, and the life-boatagain put out at 11 o'clock. A wholewest-south-west gale was now blowing,with a very rough sea. EIGHT FISHING BOATS BROUGHT IN

Newbiggin, Northumberland.—At halfpast ten in the morning of the 30thof January, 1948, the coastguard gavewarning of an approaching gale. Asseveral fishing boats were at sea thelife-boat's coxswain stood by. At 11.30he reported that the sea had becomedangerous, and at noon the motor life-boat Augustus and Laura was launchedin a heavy south-south-east gale witha rough sea. She found eight localfishing boats one and a half miles fromhome, escorted them all to safety, andreturned to her station at half past three.—Rewards, £28 Qs. '

YET ANOTHER ENGINE FAILSFiley, Yorkshire. — During the late

afternoon of the 30th of January, 1948,anxiety was felt for the safety of thelocal fishing coble Jean and Barbara,which was overdue, with a crew ofthree, and at 5.23 the motor life-boatThe Cuttle was launched. She searchedin a moderate south-westerly breezeand a slight sea and found the cobletwo miles south of Filey Brigg Buoy.Her engine had broken down, but shere-started it and made for harbourescorted by the life-boat. THREE FEET OF WATER IN ENGINE-ROOM

Clacton-on-Sea, Essex.—On the 30thof January, 1948, the crew of three ofthe motor barge Arripay, of London,abandoned her in a rowing boat, duringa south-westerly gale near the SwinBell Buoy, with three feet of water inher engine-room. At 5.40 in the after-noon the coastguard reported red flares,and a few minvites later the motor life-boat Edward Z. Dresden was launched.Helped by her flares the life-boatfound the small boat near the No. 2Wallet Buoy and rescued the threemen. With the men and their boat,she arrived back at Clacton at eighto'clock.—Rewards, £12 10s. Qd.

TOWING IN A FISHING BOAT

North Sunderland, Northumberland.—•The weather became very bad aboutmid-day on the 31st of January, 1948,while the motor fishing boat JohnWesley was at the Fame Islands, andthe motor life-boat W.R.A. waslaunched at 1.55 in the afternoon. Astrong west-south-west wind was thenblowing, with a rough sea. The life-boat found the fishing boat at 2.15 andtowed her home, arriving at fouro'clock.—Rewards, £26 17*.

Ramsey, Douglas, and Peel, Isle of Man.•—Just before half past five in theevening of the 6th of January, 1948,the coastguard informed the Ramseylife-boat station that the motor vesselTeasel was six miles east of the Point ofAyr, with a dangerous list, in a fullsouth-east gale, with a very heavy searunning and heavy rain squalls. At sixo'clock the Ramsey life-boat LadyHarrison, was launched. She had to gothrough very heavy broken water whencrossing the Bahama Bank and afterrunning for over an hour reached theposition given. There was no sign ofthe Teasel so the coxswain went roundthe Point of Ayr. As soon as he hadturned the point he saw small flashinglights close inshore, and thinking thatthey came from a small boat trying to

land, he stood in to investigate. Thevisibility was very poor, the land verylow-lying and all on board the life-boatkept a sharp look out, but they did notsee the shingle bank until the life-boatwas close to it. It was too late to doanything, and she struck and swung-round. Four of the men jumped outof her and straightened her so that shewould come off stern first. Theyjumped aboard again, but as the boatwas coming off a big sea caught herand washed the coxswain overboard.He was quickly seized by the secondcoxswain and dragged in again, butthe engines had stopped and could notbe restarted. When the boat was-examined later a stone was found to befirmly wedged between the propellershroud and the tunnel, and had to beknocked out with a hammer. Whenher engines stopped, the life-boat waswashed ashore, and the crew could notrefloat her as the tide was ebbing. Itwas then just after eight o'clock. Thelaunching tractor was sent for andhauled her up above high-water mark.Three days later she was relaunched andreturned to her station. There she wasfound to be undamaged. The mys-terious lights which had led the life-boat inshore were thought to be thelights of rabbit-catchers.

As soon as the district officer df coast-guard learned that the life-boat wasashore he telephoned to Douglas andPeel. The Douglas life-boat waslaunched at 9.17 and carried out awide search from the north of the Pointof Ayr to Ballacash Bank, but sawnothing except a salvage tug which wasalso searching. She did not return toher station until noon on the followingday, having then been at sea for fifteenhours. For another two hours thecrew stood by until it was learned thatthe Peel life-boat had returned.

The Peel life-boat was launched at9.45, made for the Point of Ayr, andthen searched widely to the westwardas far as the Irish coast. She found nosign of the Teasel and returned to herstation at 1.45 in the afternoon of thefollowing day. She had then been atsea for sixteen hours.

Bodies and wreckage of the Teaselwere found later, and it is probablethat she capsized, with the loss of allher eight men, shortly aftei she had

life-boat Frederick and Emma waslaunched at half past eleven in the

morning of the 2nd of February, 1948,as two fishing cobles were overdue anda moderate west-south-west gale wasblowing with a very rough sea. Shefound one coble, the Boy Arthur, a milesouth-east of Coquet Island, and theother, the Ocean Vanguard, two milesto the north-east, fighting their way inagainst the gale. She escorted theminto harbour and got back to her stationat 12.45 in the afternoon.-—Rewards,£8.

TAKING FOOD TO A SHIP

Ramsey, Isle of Man.—On the morn-ing of the 5th of February, 1948, theSwedish steamer Noreg, of Gothenburg,bound with ore from Spain to Silloth,was at anchor one and a half mileseast-north-east of Ramsey. She sig-nalled that she was in urgent' need ofstores, and her captain came ashore atdaybreak,. A strong south-south-west•wind got up, with a heavy sea and rain,and the boat could not return. A galewarning had been received, and thecaptain was very anxious to get backto his ship, so at 12.10 in the after-noon the motor life-boat Lady Harrisonwas launched, took the captain and hisstores out to the steamer, and returnedto her station again at 1.35.—Rewards,£16 12s.

RETURNING FROM THEWHELK GROUNDS

Sheringham, Norfolk. —• During themorning of the 6th of February, 1948,as, the weather was getting bad,anxiety was felt for the safety of threelocal fishing boats which were returningfrom the whelk grounds, and just afternoon the motor life-boat ForestersCentenary was launched. A strongwest-north-west breeze was then blow-ing, with a rough sea. She found thethree fishing boats two miles to thewestward, escorted them home, andarrived back at her station at 12.30.—Rewards, £28 3s. 6d.

A FLOODED ENGINE-ROOM

Holy Island, Northumberland. - At11.45 in the morning of the 6th ofFebruary, 1948, the coxswain saw thata fishing coble was in danger of drivingon to the Megstone Rock, and the motorh'fe-boat Gertrude was launched at 12.20.

ENGINE FAILED, SAILS BLOWN AWAY

Ramsgate, Kent. — On the 6th ofFebruary, 1948, the motor barge Glen-Kood, of Rochester, bound for Newportin the Isle of Wight, got into difficultiesoff Dumpton Gap. She was seen bythe North Goodwin Light-vessel, whichsent the information through the coast-guard to the life-boat station at oneo'clock in the afternoon and tenminutes later the motor life-boat Pru-dential was launched. A fresh north-north-westerly gale was blowing, witha rough sea. The life-boat found thebarge with her engine broken down andher sails carried away. She was drift-ing helpless, and was leaking. Shehad a crew of four. With difficulty thelife-boat went alongside, put some ofher own crew on board, and towed thebarge to Ramsgate, arriving at 3.14that afternoon.—Rewards, 13s. 6d.—Property Salvage Case.

A CASE OF MEASLES

Great Yarmouth and Gorleston, Norfolk.—At 12.20 in the morning of the7th of February. 1948, the coast-guard telephoned that H.M.S. Cygnet,bound from the Arctic to Sheerness, wasapproaching and wished to land a sickman to be taken to hospital. Themotor life-boat Louise Stephens witha doctor aboard was launched at halfpast twelve in a moderate west-north-west breeze with a slight sea, met theCygnet one and a half miles out, andbrought ashore the sick man, who hadmeasles. She arrived at 2.30.-—Re-wards, £13 13,s.

SCOTTISH STEAMER ABANDONED

Boulmer, Northumberland. — Shortlyafter six in the evening of the llth ofFebruary, 1948, a vessel stranded onthe rocks at Boulmer Head, one milesouth-east of the life-boat station, andsignalled for help. The motor life-boat

Clarissa Langdon was launched at 7.18in a fresh southerly wind with a choppysea and strongly ebbing tide. Shefound the s.s. Archmor, of Fraserburgh,with a crew of eight aboard, boundladen with coal from Amble to Inver-ness. She was waterlogged and thelife-boat brought her crew ashore,arriving at 8.15 that evening. At thecaptain's request the life-boat went outagain at 2.30 next morning, taking thesteamer's crew with her in the hope thatthe steamer would come off on the earlymorning tide, but they found theengine-room flooded and decided toabandon her. Bringing their kit withthem, they were brought ashore againby the life-boat, arriving at half pastfive. Rewards (for first service only),£12 Is.

MOTOR LAUNCH BROKEN DOWNSelsey, Sussex.—At 10.40 on the night

of the llth of February, 1948, thecoastguard reported distress signalsbetween Bognor and Littlehampton,and the motor life-boat CanadianPacific was launched at 11 o'clock.A moderate soYith-westevVy breeze wasblowing with a swell. The life-boatfound a motor launch, of Littlehamp-ton, and her crew of three signallingwith a hand torch. She was one anda half miles off shore between Middletonand Littlehampton with her enginesbroken down. The life-boat towed herto Littlehampton and arrived backat her station at 6 o'clock the nextmorning.—Rewards, £23 17s. Id.

BROUGHT INTO HARBOUR; SANK

Holyhead, Anglesey.—At 8.10 in themorning of the 14th of February, 1948,the coastguard reported that a vesselhad gone ashore in a thick fog to thesouth-east of the South Stack Light-house, and at 8.32 the motor life-boatA.E.D. was launched. A moderate,but increasing, breeze was blowing fromthe south-west; the sea was rough; andthere were still patches of fog. Thelife-boat found the s.s. Spidola, ofLondon, with a crew of thirty-two.She had got off the rocks, but herbottom had been seriously damagedand she was badly down by the head,with the fore peak and No. 1 holdflooded. Her captain thought she was

in imminent danger of foundering, andat his request the second-coxswainwent aboard. The steamer then madefor Holyhead harbour, escorted by thelife-boat, and reached it safely, butforty minutes later she sank. The life-boat returned to "her station again at12.48 that afternoon.—Property Sal-vage Case.

DOCTOR URGENTLY NEEDEDYarmouth, Isle of Wight.—At 11.10 in

the morning of the 17th of February,1948, the motor life-boat S.G.E. putout, with a doctor on board, to the s.s.Coral Sea, of New York, bound inballast from Southampton to NewOrleans, U.S.A., which had signalledthat she wanted immediate medicalhelp. A fresh east-south-east wind wasblowing, with a choppy sea. At noonthe life-boat returned with a sick manon board, and he was sent at once tothe Ryde hospital.—Rewards, £7 8*.

ANOTHER CASE OF SICKNESSNew Brighton, Cheshire.—At 3.40 in

the afternoon of the 21st of February,1948, the Mersey Docks and HarbourBoard telephoned that a man, a diverof the Admiralty, working on the dis-mantling of the Queen's Forts, one anda quarter miles off the Bar Lightship,had been summoned to go to Londonas his sister was dangerously ill and thatthe Admiralty asked if the life-boatwould bring him ashore. The No. 2motor life-boat Edmund and MaryRobinson left her moorings at 4.10in a fresh east-north-east breeze witha rough sea, brought ashore both thisman and a sick carpenter, and arrivedback at her station at 8.10 that night.—Rewards, £13 2*. 6s.

WITHOUT ENGINE, SAIL OR OARSDunmore East, Co. Waterford.—

During the afternoon of the 28th ofFebruary, 1948, a fishing boat was re-ported flying distress signals four and ahalf miles to the westward, and themotor life-boat Annie Blanche Smithwas launched at 4.30. A moderateeasterly breeze was blowing, with amoderate sea, and there was a thick fog.The life-boat found the local fishingboat Noamh Seunan with two men onboard, her engine broken down, andneither sails nor oars. She took her

in tow and arrived back at her stationat 5.50.—Rewards, £7.

HARD AGROUNDTroon, Ayrshire. — At 4.15 in the

morning of the 29th of February, 1948,the Kildonan coastguard asked for thelife-boat's help for a vessel ashore onemile east of Pladda, and at five o'clockthe motor life-boat Sir David Richmond,of Glasgow, was launched in a lighteasterly breeze, with a slight sea andfog. She found the motor vessel Spinel,of Glasgow, a coaster of 600 tons loadedwith cement, hard aground on rocksat Dippin Point, Arran. She had acrew of eleven. The master requestedthat the life-boat stand by until highwater. A tug then arrived to refloather, but she was unsuccessful. A secondattempt was made by the tug, butalthough the Spinel worked her enginesshe remained aground. During theoperations, the life-boat put aboard theMarine Superintendent, and later, atthe master's request, landed a stewardfor provisions. The life-boat returnedto the Spinel with stores and after theyand the steward had been disembarked,left for her station, arriving at 8.40that night. A donation was receivedfrom the owners.—Rewards, £29 165.

LIFE-BOAT AGROUND

Aberdeen.—At 8.7 on the night ofthe 5th of February, 1948, the coast-guard telephoned that a vessel wasthought to be ashore two miles south ofthe Belhelvie coastguard station. At8.45 he reported that she was soundingher siren continuously, and at 8.50the No. 1 life-boat, Emma Constance,was launched. A strong southerlybreeze was blowing, with a heavy sea.The life-boat found that the vessel wasthe steam trawler Northman, of Aber-deen. As she approached her sheran aground herself. The trawler wasclose inshore, and her crew of twelve

FOOD TO LIGHTHOUSE BYHELICOPTER

Penlee, Cornwall. — Owing to theprolonged bad weather at the end ofJanuary and the beginning of February,it had been impossible to relieve thekeepers of the Wolf Rock Lighthouse,and the relief was so long overdue thatthey had run very short of food.Trinity House arranged for a heli-copter to fly out to drop food to themon the morning of the 7th February,1948, and as there was a forty mile anhour wind blowing from the south-west, and the sea was rough, the motorlife-boat W and S was launched at 7.35and went out to the lighthouse to standby in case of accident. All went well,the helicopter lowered the food to the

lighthouse, and flew back, and the life-boat returned to her station arrivingat; noon.—Rewards, £17 16s.

The Life-boat Service in 1947IN 1947 life-boats went out to the helpof vessels in distress 587 times andrescued 427 lives. • There were fewerlaunches, and fewer lives rescued,than in 1946, but these two yearsare together the busiest that the Life-boat Service has ever had in time ofpeace. Life-boats went to the help of1,210 vessels and rescued 1,074 lives.

Those 427 lives in 1947 were not res-cued without loss. In April the crewof the life-boat at The Mumbles cap-sized in a hurricane with the loss of thewhole of her crew of eight men.*

During 1947 four life-boatmen wonmedals for gallantry, Coxswain EdwinF. Madron, of Penlee, Cornwall, thesilver medal, and John Drew, the Penleemotor mechanic, Coxswain JohnWaiters, of Fowey, Cornwall, andSecond-coxswain W. S. Jones, of NewBrighton, Cheshire, bronze medals.

The award for the bravest life-boatservice of the year was made to Cox-swain Madron. A bronze medal wasalso awarded, for a shore-boat service,to Mr. Kenneth Macleod, a fishermanof Pooltiel, Isle of Skye.

At the beginning of the year theInstitution substantially increased theannual retaining fees to the officers oflife-boats, and brought in a new scaleof rewards for coxswains and crews.These changes, it was estimated, wouldadd about £10,000 a year to therewards, pensions and other paymentswhich the Institution makes to itscoxswains, crews and launchers, andduring 1947 these pavments werenearly £100,000.

Three new life-boats were completedand sent to their stations, The Mumbles,Tynemouth and Bridlington. The firsttwo boats were of the 46 feet 9 inchesWatson cabin type. The Bridlington

boat is the first 35 feet 6 inches light self-righting type to have two engines andtwin screws. Twelve more motor life-boats were ordered during the year,and at the end of the year there were27 on order.

The active fleet at the end of theyear consisted of lot motor and twopulling and sailing life-boats, and inthe reserve fleet there were 14 motorlife-boats and one pulling and sailinglife-boat.

Captain Howard Rowley, R.N.ALL who were connected with the Life-boat Service twenty years ago will haveheard with regret of the death, on the4th -of April, of Captain HowardFiennes Julius Rowley, C.B.E., R.N.He was in his eightieth year, and it wasnearly eighteen years since he hadretired as Chief Inspector of Life-boats.He came to the Institution in 1902when he retired from the Navy, andserved for five years as a district•inspector. In 1909 he was appointedDeputy Chief Inspector, but on theoutbreak of war in 1914 he was recalledto the Navy. He served as SeniorNaval Officer arid Divisional NavalTransport Officer at Inverness andwas made a C.B.E. He came backto the Institution in 1919 as ChiefInspector.

His 28 years with the Life-boat Servicesaw greater changes in its fleet than had

ever been made before. When hejoined, the whole fleet, except for foursteam life-boats, was dependent onsails and oars. When he became ChiefInspector there were 19 motor life-lx>ats. When he retired there were 88.What had been little more than anexperiment in motor power had become,during his chief inspectorship, a power-ful motor fleet. In those eleven busyyears there were designed and builtthe first cabin life-boat, the first life-boat with twin screws, the first of thelight motor life-boats for launching offthe beach, the first launching tractorand the line-throwing gun. In fact,•Captain Rowley laid in those elevenyears the foundation of the fleet as itis to-day, with its motor life-boatsindependent of sail, and different typesspecially designed to suit all the differ-ing conditions of the coast.

Captain Ernest Swan, R.N.V.R.TILE Committee of Management heardwith very great regret of the suddendeath on April 6th of their colleagueCaptain Ernest William Swan, C.R.E.,V.D., D.L., R.N.V.R. Captain SwanIx-came a member of the Committeein 1939, and brought to the affairs ofthe Life-boat Service a wide experience.He was an associate member of theInstitute of Naval Architects and aFellow of the Royal GeographicalSociety, and had spent the greaterpart of his life in the firm of Sir W. G.Armstrong-Whitworth & Co. He hadjoined it in 1902 as an articled pupil,on leaving Harrow, arid from 1910 to1928 he was outside manager in chargeof the installation of all naval gun-mountings and guns. He joined theTyne Division of the R.N.V.R. in 1906,served in it during the war of 1914-

1918, and was its commanding officerfrom 1929 to 1939. He retired in1939, but rejoined for service on theoutbreak of war in September of thatyear, and served again until November.1945. In 1933 he became A.D.C. toKing George V. Captain Swaivsfamily have been actively associatedwith the work of the Life-boat Servicein Tynemouth for very many years.His father was chairman of the sta-tion; his mother, in memory of herhusband, presented the motor lift--boat Henri/ Frederick Swan, which wasstationed at Tynemouth in 1917 andreplaced by the present life-boat Tyne-sider at the end of last year; andCaptain Swan himself was chairman ofthe station for seventeen years, andhad been a member of the committeefor over thirty years.

FOR LAUNCHING LIFE-BOATS

The R.N.L.I. Roadless Tractor, made by the Roadless Traction Company. It is a 40 h.p.engine, with three speed ahead, and one astern. It can take the boat over all types of beach

The machinery is completely water-tight and the tractor can be submerged up to the topof the air-intake and exhaust pipes, and the driver's neck. This stern view shows thecapstan by which the tractor can, if necessary, haul the life-boat over very difficult ground,while stationary herself. The Institution has 13 of this type of tractor on the coast, and

14 of the earlier types.
